Welcome to The Courier, Crescent School's e-newsletter. We hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and are feeling ready for the term ahead.

We have had a busy first week with plenty of learning and co-curricular fun and even a school council trip to the Houses of Parliament. The children have settled back into their school routines quickly.

Do keep an eye on the Events section, as we have lots planned for the term ahead and read on to find out what else has been happening in school this week.

Foundation Principal's Message

Foundation Principal's Message

As we start the Trinity Term, I wanted to follow up on previous communications with you where we have shared the Foundation Strategic Plan and Environmental Sustainability Plan.

We have had great feedback on these plans, and I want to thank all the parents who have taken the time to write to us.

In the parent feedback we have also had a number of queries about the current political climate and potential changes which may affect the independent schools’ sector in the future, and what our plans are in the light of any changes.

To address this area, we are holding an Online Parents’ Forum which has been calendared for Monday 13 May at 7.00pm. This event is aimed at all Foundation parents across our schools and will specifically cover potential changes, some of which have been highlighted and discussed in the media, including the possible introduction of VAT on school fees.

During this live online forum there will be the opportunity to raise questions. We will send all parents an email with a link to the Online Parent Forum, but in the meantime, if there are any specific questions you would like addressing, please send them in using this short form.

On a related note, a number of parents have asked about our Fees in Advance Scheme, and for those whom this may be of interest to, we have put information on our website, which can be found here.

Many thanks in advance for all your help and support and let’s hope that the weather perks up soon!

Best wishes

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents and Friends of the School

I hope that you and your children have enjoyed a happy return to school this week. We have managed to dodge the hailstones and rain showers, interspersed with some lovely sunny spells, to navigate the week and enjoy a smooth start to the summer term.

It was lovely on Tuesday to welcome back some of our past pupils who came along for the annual Year 7 versus Year 6 football and netball matches. The original date, back in the autumn term, was postponed but that only meant they had all grown that little bit taller and matured that little bit more. They were very excited to see their old school and it's always great to welcome back old boys and girls.

A personal highlight was a trip with the School Councillors and Year 6 to London to visit the Houses of Parliament. This isn't a trip we have run before and it was quite difficult to get places, with lots of schools competing for the available slots. It is a case of ‘fastest finger first’ when the new times are made available.

It was fascinating to see the workings of the two chambers and one thing that stood out for me was just how small the House of Commons is. I was imagining all of the great historic events that had taken place in there, and it all seemed so intimate and not very grand, in reality. The distance between Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer during their weekly sparring bout is probably less than three metres. I did wonder if this provided a conducive environment for a calm and logical exchange of views, but perhaps that’s a discussion for another day.

I know it must be the summer term when I see children arriving in cricket gear for their lessons. We have our first fixtures planned for next week, and with trips, discos and charity events planned as well, next week promises to be all-action.

In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy a restful weekend.

Year 5 Brain Training

Dear Year 5 Parents

As you will no doubt be aware, the local authority 11+ exams for entry into Year 7 in 2025 are scheduled to take place in September 2024, most likely on the second weekend of September. Registration for the exam will open on 7 May 2024.

With this in mind, we would like to invite this year’s Year 5 children in for two days of Pre-Season Brain Training Sessions on Thursday 29 August and Friday 30 August 2024. These will run from 9.00am until 12.45pm each day.

The children will spend each morning with their familiar Crescent teachers, including Ms Forth, Mrs Webb, Ms Clark and Mr Adkins, getting them back into gear and ready for their exams. Each day there will be taught sessions focusing on the four strands of the 11+; verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, Maths and English comprehension. Needless to say, these skills will also be useful for their Princethorpe exams on Saturday 11 November, as well as any other independent school exams they may be entered for.

Children will be expected to arrive in school smartly dressed with a mid-morning snack. They do not need to wear school uniform.

These sessions will be in addition to the revision packs that we send home at the end of the Summer Term. I am pleased to say that there will be no charge for attendance.

Please indicate if you would like to sign up by following this link by Friday 3 May 2024.

Absence Requests For Holiday During Term Time Reminder

Parents are discouraged from taking pupils out of school during term-time because of the impact it has on their learning. Should this be unavoidable, permission should always be sought in advance from the headteacher. I am only able to pre-authorise absences on certain grounds such as religious observances and special family occasions.

Please ensure you submit any absence requests in good time, through My School Portal.

Reading For Pleasure Over Easter - Reminder

Final call for any last entries by Monday 22 April 2024 at 9am.

We know we have very keen readers at Crescent School and it would be lovely to gather some pictures of your child(ren) enjoying their books over the Easter break, whether on holiday, travelling, in a cosy corner, cuddled up with family or wherever you find them.

Please email your pictures to me at sarahweb@crescentschool.co.uk and hopefully we can make a great display of them all.

Happy Reading!

Uniform Standards Trinity Term Reminder

We thought it would be useful to have some photos of the correct uniform for this term.

Please note the following:

Girl's Summer Uniform

  • Dress length should be on or below the knee
  • White socks to be worn, not grey socks/tights or ankle socks
  • Blazers and jumpers
  • Black school shoes

Boy's Summer Uniform

  • Grey shorts or long grey trousers
  • Grey knee high socks
  • Blazers and jumpers
  • Black school shoes

Summer PE and Games Kit

  • Crescent sports polo shirt
  • Black short
  • Black skort
  • White short sports socks
  • Sports trainers
  • Tracksuit

  • Your child is wearing their own uniform as coats/jumpers/blazers etc sometimes get mixed up
  • Hair should be tied back
A list of items stocked in school can be found under Housekeeping.

Thank you

Trinity Term House Competition - Growing Together

The theme is 'Growing Together'. This house competition will run across the whole Trinity Term. Children can grow anything - cress head, wildflower patch, sunflowers, vegetables, flowers etc. They may not all have bloomed by the end of term but it would be lovely to see photos of the children caring for their plants and watching them grow. They can send in photos as and when suits. The deadline for photos is 21 June 2024.

Happy growing!

Year 2 History - Moon Buggy Project

Our topic in history this term is ‘Explorers’ and we start with Neil Armstrong and the moon landing. I would like the children to design and make their own moon buggies from junk modelling. So much of teaching is structured, which is important, but it’s also important to allow the children the time, space (no pun intended) and creativity to develop a whole different skill set based on trial and error and just having a go. So, this will be an unstructured activity resulting in 40 totally unique moon buggies across the year group.

We will work on them from wc 13 May. Please can you talk to your child about what sorts of junk they might like to use and start collecting over the next month. We will provide glue, cellotape, coloured paper, paint etc but think about boxes, yoghurt pots, egg cartons, toilet rolls, foil for reflection, something for wheels etc.

Closer to the time, please send things in in a named bag. It is important that the children design and plan this themselves so please let them lead with what items they want to collect / use.

Thank you in advance

Year 6 Secondary Destinations And Scholarship Success

Congratulations to all our Year 6 pupils who, back in March, had their secondary school places confirmed. Once again pupils will be moving on to a range of outstanding local independent and state schools.

Nine of the 23-strong class will be moving to the Foundation’s senior school, Princethorpe College, while five children have chosen the local grammar schools. We also have pupils going to a number of other independent schools. We are especially delighted that 12 of our Year 6 pupils have been awarded scholarships this year, including all-rounder, academic, art, sports, music and drama awards.

Sarah Webb, Assistant Head and Year 6 Teacher, said, “It’s lovely to see the children enjoying such success. Our aim is always to do our best to help our pupils reach the destination secondary school of their choice and we are particularly pleased with the range of scholarship offers this group has received. It’s an excellent outcome and everyone here is thrilled for them.”

Congratulations to all the children on their achievements – Crescent School is really proud of you all.

2023 Leavers Return For Past Pupil Matches

Crescent School gave a warm welcome to the Leavers of 2023 when they returned to their old primary school to take part in the annual Past Pupil Sports Matches on Tuesday 16 April. Many have stayed within the Foundation, and now attend Princethorpe College, but a number have moved on to other schools.

It was lovely to see all their familiar faces and to welcome them and their parents back into school. It was even better to catch up with their news while enjoying tea and cakes. First on the agenda was a tour of the school and then it was off to the field and courts respectively, ready to face Crescent’s teams.

The matches were great fun to watch, full of great sporting spirit, and fast paced with plenty of shots on goal. Midway through the netball teams swapped over to ensure everyone had a chance to play. Sport is such a huge part of life here at Crescent, and it was wonderful to see the camaraderie of all the pupils.

This year the results in the Football were 4-3 to Crescent Year 6, with a super performance from everyone, including Sam and Roisin who filled in as honorary 7s. Then in the Netball the Year 7s resoundingly came out on top beating the Year 6s 11-2 with fantastic shooting from Mya and Grace from last year's National Final team. What matters most though, is that great fun was had by all.

We always like hearing from past pupils and encourage everyone within the Crescent community to stay in touch with the school. The Foundation has an active alumni community, past parents are welcome to join, as are past pupils once they have finished their secondary education. You can find out more here: https://connect.princethorpe.co.uk/

Crescent Community Takes On The Great Birmingham Run

Mr Thackway, Mrs Yates and her son, former Crescent Head Boy, Joe, along with a number of parents from the wider Crescent community, will be joining Tina and Chris Williams on Sunday 5 May when they take on the Great Birmingham Run.

They will be running in memory of Barnaby and are raising money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity’s Neuro-Oncology Research Fund. The fund supports the research imaging in which Birmingham Children’s Hospital is a world leader. This includes studies on Medulloblastoma, including developing new tests for more rapid diagnosis and subtyping that will aid the earlier diagnosis of the condition.

Pupils Achieve 100% Success In Latest Music Examinations

Crescent School has just received the results of the latest set of The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations and is pleased to announce that pupils have achieved a 100% pass rate.

Director of Music, Julie Barnes, is delighted and said, “Congratulations to all the children who took music exams last term. They were all amazing and their success in their examinations is a testament to their hard work.”

17 children sat the exams, from Prep Test up to Grade 5, on the Piano, Trumpet, Recorder, Cornet, Violin, Guitar, Baritone and in Singing. Ten children were awarded a Merit and special mention should go to Edward M and Matthew who have both now reached Grade 5 standard on the Baritone and Descant Recorder respectively.

Mrs Barnes continued, “Thank you for all the support parents gave at home encouraging the children to keep on practising.”

A huge well done to all the children involved!

New Pollinator Beds

Mrs O'Connell and Mrs Beecham along with Grace and Patrick have been very busy filling and planting a new pollinator bed. Mr Knowles constructed the bed and the parents have planted a lovely array of seeds and plants to grow which should attract bees and butterflies and other insects. The Green Team on a Tuesday lunch will be watering and caring for the bed.

Mrs Beecham has sent in some lovely photos of Grace and Patrick helping.

The Foundation's Philanthropic Activities

Did you know?

We are constantly seeking ways to make a meaningful impact - not just within the walls of our classrooms but beyond. It is with great pride that we share an often-overlooked aspect of our institution: our status as a registered charity (1087124). This designation is not just a bureaucratic label; it is a gateway to extensive philanthropic opportunities that cater to the diverse interests and passions of our community.

The Princethorpe Foundation and our schools are uniquely positioned to act as a conduit for charitable efforts across a spectrum of causes. Whether it's advancing educational opportunities, preserving cultural heritage, promoting religious understanding, or supporting environmental stewardship, the possibilities are as vast as the imagination and goodwill of our community members.

A Platform for Diverse Philanthropic Activities

Every contribution we receive can be directed towards initiatives that resonate deeply with donors’ values. This model of giving ensures that our community can support a broad array of projects, making philanthropy highly personal and immediately impactful. Here are just a few ways that donations are helping:

  • Access to Education: Our bursaries are directly impacting the lives of young people and their families, who excel academically, but could otherwise not afford a Princethorpe Education.
  • Cultural Preservation: Support to maintain and celebrate our historic priory buildings.
  • Sports and the Arts: Activities that nurture pupils' physical and creative growth and the facilities they use.
  • Agricultural Education: Initiatives that promote farming practices and enhance pupils' understanding of agriculture’s critical role in our ecosystem and economy.

These examples only scratch the surface of what we can achieve together. Our charitable framework allows us to funnel support where it is most needed or most desired, turning the generous contributions of today into the lasting benefits of tomorrow.

Engage, Contribute, and Impact

We invite every member of our community to engage with us in this journey of philanthropy. Think about what causes you are passionate about. How can your contributions, big or small, play a role in advancing these causes? We are here to facilitate this process, to make sure that your giving is as rewarding as it is effective.

If you have ideas, projects, or specific causes you would like to support, please reach out. We are eager to discuss how we can work together to harness the power of our community for the greater good. Your involvement is crucial to our success and vital in shaping the philanthropic landscape of our community.

Through your support, we can continue to expand the boundaries of what we can achieve as a collective. Let’s continue to inspire change and make a significant impact on the world around us. Together, we can build a legacy of community, care, and change that will resonate for generations to come.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our collective future. Let us harness our efforts to not only educate but to enrich our world in myriad ways.

For more information or to make a donation, please contact Steve Kowal, our Development Director at makingadifference@princethorpe.co.uk

Together, we can do so much. Let's make it possible.

School Defibrillator Now Publicly Available

We are delighted to share the news that thanks to the generosity of the OurJay Foundation who kindly donated the cabinet, Crescent School now has a publicly accessible defibrillator mounted outside the front of the school. That means our school defibrillator is now available outside of school hours for the local Bilton community to use. Please do share this news with your friends and neighbours in Bilton.

We are also pleased to share that the school has chosen the Our Jay Foundation as the charity we will fundraise for in the 2024 Michaelmas Term. We are proud to support the amazing work of this local Rugby charity.

Around The Classes

Reception Round Up

Some of the things the children have been learning...

We have used Goldilocks and The Three Bears to introduce our new topic – Once Upon a Time. We have written personal responses to the story and compared size. We have started to classify materials and consider how they are used in the classroom.

We have been looking at teen numbers as a ten plus some more to reinforce place value. We have used a 100 square in our challenges and been learning to count in tens.

We have been thinking about our best friends and the things we enjoy doing together.

Some of the things the children will be learning in the weeks to come...

The next traditional tales we will be using as focus texts are Little Red Riding Hood, and The Gingerbread Man. We will be considering alternative characters and endings and decorating a gingerbread man.

In phonics we have revisited phase 3 sounds;

ai        igh       ee        oa

How to help your child...

  • Share different versions of traditional tales - ask the children to try and read a page or two and identify familiar words.
  • Revise the value of ‘teen’ numbers as a ten and some more.
  • Practise reading bigger numbers in the environment.
  • Count in tens to 100.
  • Talk about the materials that are used in our homes and their simple properties.

What’s going on next half term/ notices/information...

Children will soon be enjoying their snack outdoors at playtime. With this in mind, please consider snack size as there will be limited time.

Class 1Q Round Up

In Year 1 this week, we have started a new topic on Superheroes. Firstly, we drew our own superheroes and wrote a caption underneath. Then, we made our own class superhero book whereby each of us created our own superheroes and wrote sentences to describe them.

In History this week, we introduced our new topic ‘Castles’. We explored and labelled the features of a castle.

This week in phonics, we have been looking at the suffix -ed and understanding that we use -ed words in past tense.

This half term in RE, we will be looking at different saints, understanding how they were special and what we can learn from them. This week, we explored St. David.

Class 2E reading

As we become independent readers, it is a lovely feeling to be totally absorbed in a book. Reading to an adult has so many benefits but the ability to relax and enjoy reading yourself sets the children up for a life-long hobby that can bring so much pleasure. The children have loved doing this this week and looking around a silent classroom with every child reading to themselves and engaged with their book was amazing.

Class 2E Maths

We have had a week of measurement in Maths with a focus on measurement tools, reading scales and remembering units of measurement. We used rulers and re-capped cm/m for height and length, looked at how hot/cold things were in degrees Celsius using thermometers, played with water to learn about the capacity of different containers in ml/litres and discovered the mass of different items in g/kg. Lots of practical, hands on learning – who knew you could measure in so many different ways!

Children in 2W have been working on their bounce passes. We worked out that bouncing near to our partner meant they bent down low to catch it, while a bounce nearer to ourselves was a high catch. This improved our reactions, our agility and our readiness for team sports from Year 3 onwards!

Houses Of Parliament Tour

On Wednesday 17 April, school councillors from Years 4, 5 and 6 and the rest of Year 6 met outside school at 6am to take a coach to London. When we got there, we split into two groups and our tour guides took us around the Palace of Westminster - also known as the Houses of Parliament. I found this very interesting as we got to go through the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Once we finished the tour, we did a workshop including doing a quiz and a pretend debate about banning homework, before meeting the MP for Rugby, Mark Pawsey.  – Alex T

The Palace of Westminster is where the UK Parliament meet. The UK Parliament is made up of three parts: The House of Lords, The House of Commons and the Monarch. In Parliament, new laws are debated, discussed and made. Once a year the Monarch will come into Parliament to do the state opening and once a week, the Prime Minister will come in to answer questions about how he is going to improve the UK. – Alice

First, we visited the House of Commons which is a chamber where they debate about important topics and laws. We all thought it was very exciting to be in that chamber as most of us had seen it on TV before. Here the members of Parliament can challenge the government and give their opinions. There is an MP for every area of the UK and in total there are 650 MPs in the House of Commons. – Shayla

It was very exciting to visit the House of Commons because we could see where the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, does his speeches. There was a grand chair at the end for the Speaker. We learnt that the Speaker would shout ‘Order!’ if there was too much talking. Then we visited the House of Lords which is where ‘life peers’ come together to discuss and agree on new laws. They’re called ‘life peers’ because they are given a membership for life and they are usually chosen for their knowledge and experience. Overall, we really enjoyed our visit to the Houses of Parliament. – Maisie

Big Plastic Count

A BIG THANK YOU to the forty-five families that took part in The Big Plastic Count last month.

Greenpeace and Everyday Plastic launched an investigation to understand the scale of the plastic use in the UK. We have participated in their 2024 Big Plastic Count. Please see here for the overall results for our school. The families counted the different types of plastics at home for a period of seven days and recorded if they binned them or recycled them.

Our results are being included as a national picture of how much plastic is actually recycled and trying to change the mindset on how we manage plastic in the UK including exporting it to other countries.

Thank you

Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship – Everything You Need To Know About Snapchat

Snapchat is an incredibly popular messaging app, often even favoured over WhatsApp by the current teen generation. It's perfectly free and a great way for older children to stay in touch with friends, share pictures and videos with them, as well as access a huge host of very fun photo filters. Similarly to most social media however it doesn't come without its potential pitfalls, including sharing your location, unwanted 'friend' requests from strangers and accessing inappropriate content. Luckily it does also have some pretty great safety features, so with a some careful set up and well prepared users, can be safely enjoyed by pupils as they move into Year 7 and beyond.

Please take a look at this informative guide, and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Also if you have any suggestions for what you would like future guides to be on, please let me know!
