Year 5 Brain Training

Dear Year 5 Parents

As you will no doubt be aware, the local authority 11+ exams for entry into Year 7 in 2025 are scheduled to take place in September 2024, most likely on the second weekend of September. Registration for the exam will open on 7 May 2024.

With this in mind, we would like to invite this year’s Year 5 children in for two days of Pre-Season Brain Training Sessions on Thursday 29 August and Friday 30 August 2024. These will run from 9.00am until 12.45pm each day.

The children will spend each morning with their familiar Crescent teachers, including Ms Forth, Mrs Webb, Ms Clark and Mr Adkins, getting them back into gear and ready for their exams. Each day there will be taught sessions focusing on the four strands of the 11+; verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, Maths and English comprehension. Needless to say, these skills will also be useful for their Princethorpe exams on Saturday 11 November, as well as any other independent school exams they may be entered for.

Children will be expected to arrive in school smartly dressed with a mid-morning snack. They do not need to wear school uniform.

These sessions will be in addition to the revision packs that we send home at the end of the Summer Term. I am pleased to say that there will be no charge for attendance.

Please indicate if you would like to sign up by following this link by Friday 3 May 2024.

Absence Requests For Holiday During Term Time Reminder

Parents are discouraged from taking pupils out of school during term-time because of the impact it has on their learning. Should this be unavoidable, permission should always be sought in advance from the headteacher. I am only able to pre-authorise absences on certain grounds such as religious observances and special family occasions.

Please ensure you submit any absence requests in good time, through My School Portal.

Reading For Pleasure Over Easter - Reminder

Final call for any last entries by Monday 22 April 2024 at 9am.

We know we have very keen readers at Crescent School and it would be lovely to gather some pictures of your child(ren) enjoying their books over the Easter break, whether on holiday, travelling, in a cosy corner, cuddled up with family or wherever you find them.

Please email your pictures to me at sarahweb@crescentschool.co.uk and hopefully we can make a great display of them all.

Happy Reading!

Uniform Standards Trinity Term Reminder

We thought it would be useful to have some photos of the correct uniform for this term.

Please note the following:

Girl's Summer Uniform

  • Dress length should be on or below the knee
  • White socks to be worn, not grey socks/tights or ankle socks
  • Blazers and jumpers
  • Black school shoes

Boy's Summer Uniform

  • Grey shorts or long grey trousers
  • Grey knee high socks
  • Blazers and jumpers
  • Black school shoes

Summer PE and Games Kit

  • Crescent sports polo shirt
  • Black short
  • Black skort
  • White short sports socks
  • Sports trainers
  • Tracksuit
  • Crescent School sun hat/cap
  • Cricket Whites can be worn

We would ask you to check:

  • Uniform is labelled with the child's name not initials. We do get a lot of uniform in lost property which is not labelled so we are unable to return it. If it is not reunited with its owner it is put into the pre-loved uniform stock
  • Your child is wearing their own uniform as coats/jumpers/blazers etc sometimes get mixed up
  • Hair should be tied back
A list of items stocked in school can be found under Housekeeping.

Thank you

Trinity Term House Competition - Growing Together

The theme is 'Growing Together'. This house competition will run across the whole Trinity Term. Children can grow anything - cress head, wildflower patch, sunflowers, vegetables, flowers etc. They may not all have bloomed by the end of term but it would be lovely to see photos of the children caring for their plants and watching them grow. They can send in photos as and when suits. The deadline for photos is 21 June 2024.

Happy growing!

Year 2 History - Moon Buggy Project

Our topic in history this term is ‘Explorers’ and we start with Neil Armstrong and the moon landing. I would like the children to design and make their own moon buggies from junk modelling. So much of teaching is structured, which is important, but it’s also important to allow the children the time, space (no pun intended) and creativity to develop a whole different skill set based on trial and error and just having a go. So, this will be an unstructured activity resulting in 40 totally unique moon buggies across the year group.

We will work on them from wc 13 May. Please can you talk to your child about what sorts of junk they might like to use and start collecting over the next month. We will provide glue, cellotape, coloured paper, paint etc but think about boxes, yoghurt pots, egg cartons, toilet rolls, foil for reflection, something for wheels etc.

Closer to the time, please send things in in a named bag. It is important that the children design and plan this themselves so please let them lead with what items they want to collect / use.

Thank you in advance
