Headmaster's Message
Mr Thackway's weekly letter.
Dear Parents and Friends of the School
It may be a little late to wish you all a happy new year, but as this is my first newsletter of 2025 I'll take the opportunity to do exactly that. I hope, like me, you enjoyed a restful holiday. Some of you may be chuckling at that point, as I know from experience that ‘restful’ is perhaps not the word that first comes to mind when reflecting on family Christmases. For me, my children are a little bit older, and it was me and Mandy waiting downstairs for them to emerge on Christmas morning rather than the other way round. We also no longer have to rush up and down the motorways to see different grandparents, so life has got that little bit easier on that front.
Returning to school is often a great cure for the excitement and indulgences of Christmas, and I hope that the children have embraced it all this week. They always come back with smiles and stories to tell, and I can genuinely say they have settled in really quickly to their old school routines at the beginning of another term.
As always at the beginning of the year, we look forward with optimism to what lies ahead, and there's plenty coming up centred around the school for us all to look forward to. One thing we will all have to adapt to is the new version of the school calendar. As you know, we now no longer have the hard copy, pocket sized calendar but instead the online interactive version. Hopefully you'll find this convenient and you can access it on your phone as we do with so many other things in modern day life. How did we get along before they arrived? Lots of scrumpled up letters at the bottom of school bags is certainly one clear recollection of mine.
Before you look more closely at the articles in this week’s Courier I would point you towards one in particular regarding how we are charging for school lunches this term. This question has been raised following the introduction of VAT on school fees, which doesn't apply to school dinners. This actually results in a small win for you as parents, so hopefully you will welcome the news in the article that you can link to from the home page of this newsletter.
In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy a, dare I say it, restful weekend. Let's hope that this cold snap doesn't end up with a heavy snowfall at exactly the wrong moment and that we can enjoy some winter sunshine for a few more days.

Lent And Trinity Term Fees Clarification Over Lunch Charges
Lunch charge clarification.
We have had a number of queries from parents relating to the lunch charges on the Lent and Trinity Term Fees communication, which was sent out just before Christmas.
You may have noticed that lunches, which have been included in the fees for some years, are now itemised separately, this is because they are exempt from VAT. Lunches are still compulsory, however we realised that by splitting the cost out, the overall combined cost to parents of fees including VAT plus lunches would be reduced and therefore lower than we originally indicated back in August. We hope this clarifies the matter and comes as good news.

Mrs Barnes Announces Her Retirement
Mrs Barnes is retiring,
Mrs Barnes has been the Director of Music here at Crescent School for the last 27 years. This is an astonishing length of service that Julie can be enormously proud of. When the time comes, she can look back on so many years of lessons, concerts and performances with enormous pride and satisfaction.
Not only that she can start to tally up the number of children that she has influenced and set off on their musical journeys. Without any shadow of a doubt, many of these will have developed their first love of music here at Crescent and gone on to make it a true lifetime treasure.
But don't worry, Julie isn't leaving us until the end of the summer term, when we will be able to give her a proper send off. Before then, we will be recruiting for Julie’s replacement and adverts are about to go out on the Foundation website and other outlets in the next few days.
I will keep parents fully informed of our progress with finding a replacement for Julie and hope to be in a position to announce the new incumbent before the end of this term.

Behaviour Agreement Update
An update from Mr Webb.
Dear Parents
Children in school have been responding positively to our new behaviour agreement which was shared with you all last term and has focused on any low level behaviours in and around school. Alongside this, as promised, we have been reviewing fair and consistent sanctions for this which both encourage positive behaviour alongside deterring any negative.
As such, in Pre Prep there will be an increase in language used with the child around green (good) and red (not so good) choices. This will result in a whole class Friday afternoon reward time if the greens outweigh reds or reach a certain total!
If an individual child isn't responding to this we will work together with parents to support.
In upper school, we will continue with our chance to change system where children will always receive clear warning if their behaviour is not in line with any aspect of our agreement. If this then continues a record of it will be kept internally. In line with the school working in partnership with families, we will inform/meet with parents if patterns emerge to agree ways forward.
Of course, any higher level behaviour concerns will continue to be dealt with in line with policy.
With best wishes
Mr Webb

Creative Writing Competition
Details of a creative writing competition.
Time to Write 2025 is a creative writing competition run by ISEB and IAPS, open to all schools, with four categories across different age groups, and prizes for both the winning writers and their schools. The competition is now open and will close on 2 February 2025.
The winning writers in each category will see themselves in print, as each will have their story turned into an illustrated book! Prizes will also be awarded to the winning writers’ schools. Further prizes will be on offer for the runners up in each category.
Entries must be typed and cannot be entered if they are hand-written. The writer's name and the name of the writer's school should not be included within the story nor in the title of the story. Entries must not contain any additional embellishments such as drawings or diagrams. All entries must be in English.
Entries are submitted by school, so should be sent by email in a Word document to Ms Clark (emmaclark@crescentschool.co.uk) by Friday 31 January at the latest. I may not pick up entries sent over the weekend of 1 and 2 February, so it's important to meet that deadline.
See this Time-to-Write-2025-Poster-x-Schools document and the Time to Write website for more information, including this year's writing prompt.

Sad News Of Passing Of Former Headteacher
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Christine Barrett, former headteacher at Crescent School.
Mrs Barrett joined the Crescent School back in September 1965 when the school was based at its original Horton Crescent site. At that time there were approximately 60 pupils in the school, in five classes, and she began her career at Crescent teaching the middle class, Class III. In 1971 she took over as headteacher and she then led the school through its move to its current site, on Bawnmore Road in Bilton, in 1988, and on until her retirement, in July 1992.
Mrs Barrett was a much loved and respected headteacher and her philosophy and determination to educate were instrumental in building the school we have today. Back in 1985 she wrote in a school report, “With a school such as the Crescent it is very hard to fit all we would like to do into the school day, even with lunchtimes and after school sessions. We do our best and try to give the children not only a sound academic base but as many opportunities and responsibilities in other fields as we can. We also need to prepare our older pupils for life in the inevitably larger secondary schools and it is good to see the leavers when they visit us and hear of them tackling their new school lives with confidence and enjoyment.” It is interesting to note that much the same could be said of Crescent School today nearly 40 years later, which is testament to the strong foundations laid by Mrs Barrett.
Mrs Barrett visited the school back in September 2018 when the school marked its 70th anniversary and she is pictured in the first photograph then with the current headmaster, Joe Thackway, to her left and former headmaster, Huw Marshall, to her right.
The school will be celebrating the life of Mrs Barrett and her contributions to the school in its Founder's Day service next week on Wednesday 12 January.
Mrs Barrett’s funeral service is expected to be held later this month, and details will be shared once they have been confirmed.
Our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers go to Christine’s family and friends.

Pre-Prep Reading Certificates
Reading Certificates for Pre-Prep.
A really important part of life in Pre-Prep is building a love of reading. We are developing the children's phonics skills, reading fluency, expression, style and comprehension. Each week we select two readers from each class who have stood out to us as demonstrating one or more of these skills or who have made really great progress over the previous few weeks. It's a lovely way for the children to know that we recognise and celebrate their success.

Phonics
In this first week back to school, we have been re-visiting some of the trickier digraphs (two letters which combine to make a single sound) and re-familiarising ourselves with the high frequency words we have covered so far. We have placed particular focus on the trickier high frequency words which involve our much-loved Monster Phonics characters:
Today we started an informal ‘check-point’ of the children’s phonics knowledge to date and will continue this at the start of next week also. As always, these mini-assessments are always completed one to one and in a relaxed environment. It is a great opportunity for the children to showcase their fabulous phonics knowledge as they have worked so hard!
Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
In our PSED sessions this week we have looked at the ‘Zones of Regulation’. There are four different areas as follows:
Blue – tired, bored, sick, sad
Green – happy, ok, focussed, calm
Red – annoyed, cross, scared, angry
Yellow – surprised, confused, worried, silly
The children have found it very helpful to check in with their feelings at different points in the day to develop their confidence in being able to identify and label their emotions. We will also begin to look at a few strategies the children can use when experiencing particular emotions. We have continued our theme of ‘celebrating differences’ through the class shared reading of This is Me! by George Webster and we have discussed the importance of inclusion using the story The Smeds and the Smoos by Julia Donaldson to support this.
Handwriting
This week we have continued with Rupert the Sheep’s short and straight letter family with the cursive formation of ‘m’. We have also learnt the number formation for 9, using the following rhyme to help us:
“A circle and then a line, that’s the way to make a nine!”
When we do independent writing in class, the children are encouraged to write the cursive formation of all the letters we have covered so far which are: l, t, h, b, k, f, o, a, d, g, q, c, s, i, n and m. We will be looking at the letters ‘r’ and ‘u’ next week.
With the excitement of snow this week, the children enjoyed using their subitising skills to ‘roll a snowman’ in which they needed to role certain numbers on their dice to add detail to their snowman drawing such as a hat, scarf, nose and so on. Linked to this, the children really enjoyed the class story of The Snow Thief by Alice Hemming about a curious squirrel who has never seen snow before.
Expressive Arts
The class have been getting creative with making ‘cold’ art compositions and paper snowflakes for our class display. This fits in really well with our ‘Hot and Cold’ topic this half term in which the children will explore hot and cold climates, arctic animals, weather types and the seasons. The children are already having lots of fun enjoying our class ‘ice cottage’, the (fluffy!) snowballs, penguin hats and themed cuddly toys.
Reminder
Thank you to all those that have returned PE bags and Forest School clothing (puddle suits, waterproof gloves and wellington boots). Please can you ensure these are in school on Monday as the children have both Forest School and PE that day.
It has been wonderful to have the children back in school and to hear all their exciting news from over the Christmas holiday. Wishing you all a very happy new year.

Year 1 Topic 'Nocturnal Animals'
Year 1 have started a new topic on Nocturnal Animals this week.
Year 1 have been very excited to get back into the swing of learning after a restful period. We have been engaging in lots of fun learning activities this week. In writing, we began our new topic on ‘Nocturnal Animals’. We read a poem called The Moon by Robert Louis Stevenson which mentioned lots of nocturnal animals. We then used non-fiction books to find out which animals are nocturnal and which animals are diurnal.
We linked our writing topic to our Art lesson this week where we drew our own barn owls. We really enjoyed perfecting the finer details on the feathers. We then coloured in our barn owls to make them come to life.

Year 2 have been understanding similes this week.
Children in 2E made their writing more interesting and varied this week by using similes. They came up with some fabulous ideas: as light as the wind, as plump as a turkey, as bright as the sun…
We challenged ourselves further by seeing if we could write some simile descriptions of someone we know. The guesses were interesting!

Children explore hygiene using glitter.
Year 2 have been exploring how hygiene is important to humans in their Science lessons. Pupils used glitter to show how germs transfer from one person to another. The children then investigated which was the best way to wash the glitter off. They found out that soap and water and rubbing your hands for 20 to 30 seconds was the best way to remove the glitter germs.

Digital Citizenship – YouTube
Youtube guidance/information.
Youtube is by far the most famous video-sharing social media platform, and one of the most popular websites/apps in the world. It has a vast range of content, from music, to sports, to gaming, to news, to pointless celebrities… and is a great space for creating content as well as just watching it. It is also a one stop shop for learning how to do pretty much anything, from wiring a plug to making cake pops and is hugely entertaining for literally all interests and all age-ranges. While it is not quite as dangerous as the much maligned TikTok, it does come with a large number of potentially very serious pitfalls for young viewers, including inappropriate content, interacting with strangers and possible scams. Please take a look at this guide for the best way to allow your child to use Youtube as safely as possible.
If you have any further questions, about this or anything else computing related, please do get in touch!
