Welcome to The Courier, Crescent School's electronic newsletter.

The end of the half term is upon us, so it was a non-uniform day at school today with the children raising money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. As an end of half term treat, we welcomed Image Musical Theatre to school to perform The Sword In The Stone and as always the children really enjoyed the production.

Our cover photo is of the U10 Boys Football team who had a great time at Repton’s Football Festival last weekend.

We wish everyone a good half term break and look forward to seeing pupils back at school on Monday 31 October.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

I hope you enjoy this final edition of the Courier for the half term. We have worked hard here at school throughout the last six weeks, with so much going on in the classrooms, on the playing fields and in the music rooms. There are some great sporting exploits to read about elsewhere in the newsletter as well as reports from in and around the classes.

It was lovely to finish today with a colourful non-uniform day raising money for the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, which is such an excellent cause to support. We also had a theatre workshop throughout the day which the children always love and provided a lot of laughs and fun.

We have continued to support Black History Month over the last couple of weeks, with interesting assemblies on the lives of Walter Tull, a black professional footballer and army officer in the First World War, and Kathryn Johnson, a NASA space scientist. Both of these real-life stories provided the children with lots to think about and a sense of wonder and amazement about what humans are capable of achieving despite challenging circumstances.

It has been a busy half term and I’m sure the children are now ready for their break, as I expect the staff are as well. I hope you have something nice planned or, if you aren’t going away, you are able to spend some quality time with the children, which is more important than anything else.

Over the break, we will have some re-surfacing taking place of the paths at the front of the school. I am excited to see what this looks like and it will be something for you all to look out for when you return on 31 October. I look forward to seeing you and the children all again safe and sound on that date and wish you a happy half term holiday.

Important Information

Collection From Co-Curricular Clubs Early

We are having a number of parents asking if they can collect at alternative times to the set end of a co-curricular club. As much as we like to be accommodating I am afraid after half-term we cannot meet these requests due to the logistics of not having staff to safely hand over your child to their adult. Most clubs have one adult running them.

If you wish to remove a child from a club due to this protocol then please let Mrs Tucker know and she will update our records.

Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

Winter Uniform To Be Worn After Half Term

After the half term break all children are expected to be in full winter uniform. Parents can use their discretion as to whether blazers or the school coat are more appropriate for the weather at the time.

When it does get really cold we do need all the children to have their coats in school so we can make a decision on outdoor break times.

The School Shop is closed over half term.  Uniform items can be ordered via the link below and will be delivered to school during the first week back.

Year 6 Half Term Work

As 6W enter the final phase of preparation for Entrance Exams, we are sending home a wallet of work to provide continued support through the holidays.

All instructions and expectations are on instructions from Ms Forth and me in their folder, that they were given on Thursday. It is parental choice whether you would like your child to use the work provided.

We do also believe the children should have a rest over the half-term, as they have been working so hard.

Year 5 Half-Term Reading

Class 5F have been given a book this week to read over half-term. The book is called Goth Girl And The Ghost Of A Mouse by Chris Riddell, we have started it in class but I would like it to be completed over half-term.

Please feel free to share this book as a family, listen to it on an audiobook or discuss it with your child if they are reading it independently. It will need to be completed by the time we return to school as we will be doing some work on it on our return.

Adventure Trail A Swinging Success

Children at Crescent School are now enjoying state-of-the-art play equipment thanks to a donation from the Friends of Crescent (FoC).

The fundraising campaign by the primary school’s parents and teacher association has funded the large majority of the cost, a magnificent sum of nearly £12 000, of the high-quality natural wood adventure trail through a range of initiatives that included clothes sales, quizzes, movie nights, fairs and recycling collections.

The new outdoor play area has been installed on the grass at the back of the playground and provides an exploratory, fun and engaging activity trail that has been designed to engage and challenge the children physically.

Comments, Chair of the FoC, Inez de Koning: “We are delighted to contribute to the wellbeing of the school by providing play equipment that encourages children to be active and creative outdoors.”

Headteacher, Joe Thackway, added: “Many thanks to our parents and to the FoC who worked so hard to provide this wonderful equipment. It will help to develop children’s confidence in movement and support better peer relationships while developing a lifelong passion for physical activity.”

Participatory Theatre Is Always A Hit At Crescent School

Image Musical Theatre visited the Crescent School today, Friday 14 October, to stage a production of The Sword In The Stone for the whole school.  As always, the children got to join in with the super story-telling session and clearly all enjoyed the show.

Image Musical Theatre is a company that perform participatory theatre to primary school audiences.  They believe that bringing a story to life engages children and helps encourage them to read.

The actors, began by selecting children to take part in the show.  They then worked with the audience teaching them a series of songs, hand actions and responses to accompany the tale.

After a short break to allow the players to get into their costumes the production started. It was an excellent performance full of comedy and wit and the children sat focused and fully engaged. The theatre company cleverly brought the classic tale to life and the children really enjoyed singing all the songs.  Well done to Crescent’s budding actors, Feranmi, Jonny, Max, Sarima, Isabella J, Lilah, Leela, Hattie, Oscar and Bryson, who took to the stage eagerly and delivered their lines with aplomb.

It was another great morning of engaging learning and fantastic fun.

Crescent School Comes Third In Year 5 Maths Challenge

On Monday 10 October, Crescent School took part in Princethorpe College’s Year 5 Maths Challenge. The event was run by Douglas Buchanan of DCBEAGLE Challenges, who specialises in organising exciting and innovative maths activities for primary school aged children.

Crescent took two teams of two to compete alongside 36 pairs of enthusiastic and very talented mathematicians from 18 local schools, the pupils took part in a series of puzzles against the clock. In five eight-minute rounds the children tackled Tangram Triangles, Broken Calculators, Domino Jigsaws, Make 24, Card Order and Curly’s Cycling Circuits.

Ably supported and marked by a team of Princethorpe’s Year 10 pupils, the competition stretched and challenged the children with mathematical activities that required both reasoning skills and mathematical knowledge.

The event was huge fun for all who took part and everyone who participated received a certificate and a special Princethorpe cookie.

Crescent School’s best placed team finished in 3rd place overall with the second team finishing 26th. Well done to Shayla, James, Timi and Alex.

Mrs Dowling, who accompanied the children, said, “The children had a great time and really enjoyed putting their maths skills to the test. Well done to them all, there were some very talented mathematicians taking part and they made Crescent School proud.”

Reception Roundup

Some of the things the children have been learning...

We have used stories with repeated text in Literacy. It’s been great to see the children engage and join in to tell the stories. Little Rabbit Foo Foo has been firm favourite and the children recognise the naughty rabbit is not being a good friend or citizen like they are trying to be!

In Maths we have been recognising, continuing, and creating our own simple patterns. We have been developing formation and number recognition, matching numerals to amounts.

‘Protective Behaviours’ has been our focus in Personal, Social and Emotional Development. We have explored that parts of our body are private and talked about personal hugging rules.

Some of the things the children will be learning after half term...

Our topics after half term are Light and Dark and Celebrations. Our first focus text in literacy will be Funnybones, by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. We will be writing speech bubbles and labels. It’s quite possible there will be a couple of Funnybones characters in class to bring our learning to life!

We will be learning about family celebrations such as birthdays, weddings and christenings. We will also be finding out about festivals of light and Christmas of course.

In Maths we will be building greater depth of understanding to numbers to 3 – odds and evens, 1 more, 1 less and simple addition.

In phonics we have been practised single sounds…

c   k   e   u   r   h   b   f

How to help your child at home…
  • Continue to practise dressing/undressing to encourage independence
  • Practise saying the days of the week and link to routines
  • Practise counting to 20 and beyond
  • Practise writing numbers 0-10
  • Practise writing first and last names – try to use the cursive letters we’ve learned this half term
  • Visit the library – share new and familiar stories

What’s coming up/notices/information...

To support our work with our topic ‘Celebrations’ please send in any photos of the children at birthdays, christenings etc. We will be making a class celebrations album.

Soon after half term, we will begin rehearsals for our nativity.  This year we will be joining with Year One children to perform Baarmy Bethlehem. I’m hoping a few Reception children will be keen to take a small speaking part.

Thank you for your support with handwriting at home. There is already significant improvement in pencil grip, control and letter formation.

It was great to see everybody at the parent’s consultation meetings over the last couple of weeks. Thank you for your support so far and for helping the children get off to a great start this year.

Grace Darling Lighthouse - Year 2 History

Both Year 2 classes have loved creating their lighthouse models as part of our learning on Grace Darling. Lots of talk took place about the sea rescue, where the SS Forfarshire would have been shipwrecked and what it would be like to live in rooms with round walls. The children are very excited to take their models home and continue to add detail to them.

A fun way to finish off our first history topic this year.

Have Some Coding Fun With Your Children – Make A Scratch Project Together!

Coding is now a really important and weighty part of the Primary Computing Curriculum, and the main reason for this is that it promotes a wide range of vital and transferrable life skills, such as logic, problem solving and self-regulation. Luckily it is also really hands-on and fun! A great way to get to know a little more about this and exactly what your children are learning could be to create a Scratch project at home with them. If you haven’t heard of Scratch before, it is a free block-based programming website developed by the MIT and aimed specifically at children https://scratch.mit.edu/. It allows you to create a wide range of computer games, quizzes or animations, with the user writing all of the coding themselves!

The website is really straightforward to navigate, has a great parents information section and is 100% safe for children of any age to navigate on their own, although ability-wise it is more appropriate for Key Stage 2 if using independently. You can either explore the millions of games and quizzes that have been created by other users (all carefully vetted and checked) or create your own projects, which is the real fun bit! Now if your children have used it before, they may just be able to take the lead, but if not there are a lot of activity guides and simple tutorials that are easy to follow https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/editor/?tutorial=all.

If you’re looking for somewhere to start, why not have a go at making a Shark Attack game, following the attached guide here. Although it can look a little daunting at first, it’s easy to get the hang of the basic functions and commands. Also it is brilliant for promoting the idea of ‘debugging’; trying things out first, and if they don’t work trying to figure out why!

If you need any help at all or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Also if you have created some amazing Scratch projects with your children, I’d love it if you could share them with us!

U10s Boys Festival Of Football - Repton Prep

The U10s travelled over to Repton Festival of Football on Saturday in very high spirits, and this immediately translated into some superb football on the pitch. The 1st game saw Crescent overcome the home side Repton Lions 2-0, Sam B scoring twice following super link-up play with Timi and Akaal.

The U10s triumphed again in their second match, playing some very accomplished football to beat Fairfield Prep on a truly enormous pitch. The final score was 1-0, although could have been many more with Crescent dominant throughout, Sam B again on the scoresheet, this time Henry the provider. Still recovering from their first two matches, Crescent then came up against a very strong RGS side, and despite a valiant effort lost 3-1. Akaal’s superbly well-worked goal in this game was incidentally the only one RGS conceded over the whole tournament.

Crescent bounced back superbly in their 4th match, beating Repton Tigers 2-0 in a very physical encounter. Sam B and Alex G scored the goals, while Alex and Shiv in defence and Zac in goal were fantastic at the back. Their final game saw Crescent come up against old rivals Crackley with the boys again victorious, Timi scoring with a fantastic strike to take the 1-0 victory. This left Crescent firmly in second place out of the six teams having won four of their five games, their only loss to the unbeaten RGS.

It would be impossible to pick just one player of the tournament due to the level of effort, teamwork and determination shown by every player in the squad:

  • Zac and Alex G who were outstanding in goal,
  • Shiv and Alex T who were calm and composed in defence,
  • Henry, Sam and Akaal who were creative and full of energy in midfield
  • Timi who played his number 9 role to perfection.

Hockey Round Up

U9 Girls Hockey V Twycross House
Crescent started strong driving the ball hard from the start, pushing up into the attacking D, and after several attempts by Roisin and Sophia, Roisin was able to score the first goal with some help from Mya. We continued to attack well, moving the ball well down the wings and crossing in to the D but struggled to find the back of the goal again.

In the 2nd third unfortunately Roisin suffered a head injury and had to be taken off the pitch for assessment whilst the rest of the team continued to attack. MingYi and Sophia continued to work hard in midfield and Sophie covered well in defence with Nora with Toni leading the attack up front but unfortunately we lost some of our shape allowing Tywcross to capitalise and score 2 goals. Entering the final 1/3rd Twycross kindly offered a spare player to even up the numbers. The girls continued to work hard running their socks off and gaining most of the possession but unfortunately we could not find that equalising or winning goal.

Great determination and grit shown by all players. Player of the game awarded to MingYi.

U9A vs King Henry's
A great game was played between two evenly matched teams. However strong tackling and movement from Crescent's midfield went unrewarded as the girls couldn't quite find the goal they were looking for. A goal mouth scramble resulted in a goal for King Henry's just before half time. The second half was similar with the girls working hard to move the ball in to spaces and connect some passes. A well worked free hit from King Henry's saw the ball travel to an unmarked player who was clinical in scoring their second goal. All the girls worked hard and should be very pleased with their effort especially Sophia who had an outstanding game.

U11 A V King Henry's
The team have made fantastic progress this term and have really gelled as a squad. The girls put up an impressive performance of hockey led superbly by captain Ellie in the middle of field and by Ava in the defensive D, who was always talking to her players when Henry’s attacked. Lots of short corner practice, with Ellie injecting the ball hard to Bella who would lay it off to Grace or back to Ellie to have a go for goal.  A great match well done girls Final result 3-0 win.  Player of the Game was awarded to Esme.

Well played all.

Mrs McCollin
Head of PE and Games

U8 Hockey V King Henry’s U9B Team
Our U8 girls put up a fantastic display of attacking hockey against King Henry’s on Tuesday night up at Rugby College.  We went out with determination, gaining possession quickly from a King Henry’s push back.  Amber, Evelyn and Esme dominated the game in midfield reading the ball well to make quick interceptions from any King Henry’s free hits to drive the ball quickly forward with Evelyn scoring the first goal, with Charlotte in support in the D.

The 2nd half started well with Aria, Ella and Nimeeta pressing the ball hard in defence, going to meet the player and putting in strong block tackles to gain possession and stop the attack.  Strong attacking play from Amber, Esme and Evelyn again with Lilah helping in attack saw Crescent find the back of the goal three more times, but unfortunately none of the balls were touched inside our attacking D so could not be counted, a learning experience for all.

A very good performance by all players.  Final Score 1-0 Win.  Player of the game to Amber.

U11B vs King Henry's
An excited squad arrived in Coventry raring to go, Tegan was especially happy to be putting on the goalie kit for her first match. Crescent had a dominant first half, with the outstanding work rate ensuring that the ball rarely left Crescent's attacking half. Capitalising on this pressure Lara carefully slotted the ball into the goal. In the second half Crescent had lots more of the play but were unable to score any more goals. Erin was voted player of the match.

A big thank you to Saira and Grace M who kindly volunteered to play for the opposition for a half each. I could see real improvement this term, well done.

Football Round Up

Twycross House U9’s ‘A’   0  -   2   Crescent U9’s ‘A’
Crescent continued their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable win away at Twycross. Quickly out of the blocks, Zac and Henry combined well to send Akaal through to the goal, who finished with deadly precision. Playing on a pitch that was much smaller than usual led to a very congested game, but Crescent were able to double their lead just before the break, Zac heading into the net from a powerful Maxi throw into the box. The second half saw multiple chances at both ends, but super defensive work from Sam, Lewis, Aryaan and Ed denied the Twycross attacks, leaving the final score at 2-0. Maxi was voted player of the match by the opposition for his strong tackling and long-range throws.

Twycross House U9’s ‘B’   2  -   6   Crescent U9’s ‘B’
Crescent B really impressed in their second game of the season, wasting no time in taking the lead against Twycross, Matthew firing in from close range. The visitors were then able to dominate throughout, Max, Shaylan and Herbie working superbly together to give Crescent the majority of the possession and territory. Captain Matthew continued to be deadly in front of goal, scoring a further five goals to complete a magnificent double hat-trick, and despite Twycross grabbing two goals back in reply, the defence stayed solid to ensure a fantastic 6-2 win. Player of the match was deservedly Matthew, with Max a very close second.
