Welcome to The Courier, Crescent School's electronic newsletter.

What a sunny week it has been this week.  It's been lovely to see the children enjoying lessons outside and having fun in the sunshine at break time.

Again, it has been another busy week in School and we have lots of interesting articles to read.  Please do read the uniform update article.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

We have all enjoyed a hard-working week here at school, blessed with plenty of sunshine and warm weather. Let’s hope that continues for the Year 6 children on the trip to Devon next week, although my experience is that adults worry more about the weather than the children do. They have been very excited about this trip during the week and they received their hoodies in assembly today, giving them a real sense of togetherness and a common purpose. Many thanks to the FoC who provide the funding for the hoodies and taking care of all the ordering as well.

On the theme of FoC, it was great to see so many parents, staff and children at the charity walk last Sunday at Draycote Water. The theme of the sponsored walk coincided nicely with national mental health week as we raised money for our charity of the term, Place2B.

As you know, we are currently taking part in The Carnegie Mental Health Award for Schools which involves a thorough self-assessment and developing a self-improvement plan. As part of this process we are currently looking at the appointment of a school lead on wellbeing and pastoral care, more news of which I will be able to bring you later in the term.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Joe Thackway

School Promise Rule Of The Week

For a two or three week period this year we will be focusing on one of the sayings in the new School Promise. We will talk about this in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.

This week’s promise is in the category of Good Learners and focuses on the theme of listening. This is such a key attribute for learning. A pupil who really listens actively, takes on advice and feedback and takes action on what they have heard, genuinely does demonstrate the learner profile that makes such a difference in the classroom.

‘We listen and don’t interrupt’

News

PSHE Focus

To raise awareness of national Mental Health Awareness Week, it was good to share with the children more about our chosen charity for this term – Place2be. We watched the beginning of a BBC Lifeline Programme on what the charity stands for, how they help children and families in schools and how we can recognise our worries and fears and know that there are people on their network to listen.

As parents, if you would like to find out more and hear about their work please visit place2be (not suitable for young children).

We have been also raising the awareness in our classrooms – Class III practise the mindfulness programme ‘Peace out’ once a week and the children reflected on how it makes them feel.

Uniform Check Request

Children often grow quickly and the summer term is a good time to replace any damaged, missing or ill-fitting items.  A full list of uniform requirements can be found in the parent information booklet.

Please can you check:

  • Uniform is labelled with the child's name not initials. We have a lot of uniform in lost property which is not labelled so we are unable to return
  • Your child is wearing their own uniform as Jumpers/Cardigans/Blazers etc sometimes get mixed up
  • Summer dress length should be on or below the knee and shorts to the knee
  • Gym shorts remain in school for PE lessons

Sun Hats - please ensure your child has a sun hat/boater in school now the weather is warmer.

New School Tracksuit - This will be a compulsory item from the beginning of the next academic year, 2019-2020 for all children in Year 3 to Year 6. All pupils represent the school on a regular basis and having the same tracksuit will help to build a sense of belonging to the team. They will also get plenty of use on games afternoons and at sports events

School Bags - All children will need to have the Crescent School bag from the beginning of next academic year 2019-20

Uniform order forms are available from the school office by contacting Mrs Browne (Foundation Shop Manager):

Non-Uniform And Wear A Hat Day

On Friday 24 May we will have a non-uniform day in aid of our term’s charity, Place2Be. The children can come in their own clothes and are invited to wear a hat to acknowledge and celebrate the great work that this charity does for children’s mental health.

So get looking for your baseball caps, flat caps, bobble hats and straw boaters! Please bring in £1 on that day and all proceeds will go to Place2Be.  There will also be additional fundraising games by the pupil entrance on that Friday so you may want to send some extra money in with your child.  These games will cost 50p or £1 to enter.

Many thanks

Around The Classes

Class I Visit BEC Church

Following on from our visit from Pastor Alan, the children went on a trip to visit him at Bilton Evangelical Church. Having studied traditional Christian churches, the children were able to compare BEC which is a modern, less traditional church and analyse the similarities and differences.

The children had a tour of the church and then we visited the coffee shop. Great questions were asked by the children such as, ‘Why is the coffee shop called Mosaic?’ and ‘Why does a church need a coffee shop?’ A wonderful opportunity to bring their learning to life and build a wider picture of the role of faith in the community. Class 1 were beautifully behaved and a real credit to themselves, their parents and the school.

Co-Curricular Pre-Prep Philosophy Club

This week in philosophy club we were recognising that we do not all see things in the same way. We had pictures to look at but we all saw something different in them. It is important to consider other peoples' views as well as convincing others of our own.

Crescent School Pupils’ Success In Midlands In2Hockey Tournament

On Sunday 5 May Rugby and East Warwickshire Hockey Club's U10 girls and boys travelled to Nottingham to play in the Midland Regional Finals for the England Hockey In2Hockey tournament. Both teams were representing Warwickshire having finished in the top two of a previous competition. Of the 20 girls and boys representing the club 13 were from Crescent School!

The boys had the perfect morning winning all of their group games scoring 12 goals and conceding none and so proceeded confidently into the knock out stages.  They then went on to beat Sutton Coldfield (3-0) and Repton (2-0) before defeating Belper 2-0 in the final. Therefore the boys are the 2019 Midlands U10 Champions. They fully deserved their success and should be very proud of their achievements this season. Well done to Matthew, Sam, Noah, Marco, George, Archie and Joshua.

The girls were very competitive and showed great determination and team work. Leading their group at the half way stage, they unfortunately lost two games by just one goal which dropped them to fifth in the group. Final result, ninth best team in the Midlands. Good effort by all and they had a thoroughly good time! Well done to Amelie, Harriett, Amy, Eve and Sienna. They should be very proud!
