Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents and Friends of the School

I was delighted to have the opportunity to travel over to Repton with the U10 boys for their football matches earlier in the week. Most of my career I have taught games in different formats and it was great to put the boots on and get back out there on the touchline. On the sporting theme, I should make special mention of the U10 girls football team who triumphed in the ISA Midlands tournament last Friday. They came back clutching their winning trophy with great tales of their exploits. Mr Adkins was similarly delighted with their performance, as well as their exemplary behaviour throughout the day.

During this half term it has been great to see so many trips going out of school for educational visits. This week it was Year 4’s turn, who enjoyed a fascinating visit to Rugby Museum for a Roman workshop. The children get so much out of these trips and it really brings their learning to life.

One other highlight of the week I would like to mention was the Nigeria Day celebrations on Tuesday. We had lots of parents visiting for the assembly with their children dressed in traditional clothes. We heard from the children about the history and traditions of the country. We finished by asking the children who would like to visit Nigeria if they had the chance and every single hand went up. Who knows, one day we might get the opportunity.

My trip to Newcastle University with my son for the open day last week was productive although I can't say I enjoyed the journey very much. It’s a long way to go for the day, but you learn so much by actually setting foot in the building. I know many Year 5 and 6 parents are on a similar track at the moment as they start to visit and develop their thoughts about potential secondary schools.

I hope you all enjoy a restful weekend.

Xmas4schools Christmas Cards

We are purchasing our fundraising Christmas cards from Xmas4schools. Your child should bring home an order card tonight, that has the ordering details on one side and the actual space where the design must be on the other.

Please fill in details and keep to the class name as RP, 1Q, 2E, 2W, 3LS, 3SS, 4C, 5F or 6W. Also, there is a price guide as to what products you will be able to buy when the design is complete.

The design guidelines are:

  • Do not go too near the edge as the printer will cut it off - you must be 1cm away all around
  • Do use felt tip, ink, pencil crayons, gel pens - brighter the better- pale does not show up
  • Do use collage if you want - but well stuck down
  • Do use glitter glue if you want
  • Do not use sprinkle glitter- it falls off!
  • Do not use large areas of metallic finishes - it will not look shiny
  • Do cover up as much of the white space as you can
  • Do make any text big as the process will reduce the size of the design

The design card with details, must be returned as soon as possible. The deadline is Wednesday 18 October 2023. We cannot accept or send any late orders.

FoC will receive a donation for every product ordered, so do get designing! Please note that this is not the Crescent School Christmas card competition, but items just for yourselves.

Please click on the photos in the gallery which provide information.

Pupils Learn About Nigeria

To celebrate Nigerian Independence Day, on Tuesday 3 October pupils at Crescent School took part in a special assembly. Led by pupils and parents of Nigerian heritage, the assembly introduced the school community to the diverse, vibrant and amazing culture of Nigeria.

Year 6, Timi and, Year 5, Toni shared lots of key facts about the geography, wildlife, economy and culture of Nigeria and pupils then watched a video to learn a little about the music, dance and dishes of this giant of Africa. They found out that over 500 different languages are spoken in the country but that in schools in Nigeria, pupils learn in English.

Pupils were introduced to the three main ethnic groups in Nigeria, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo, and were impressed by the colourful and decorative traditional dress worn by each group.

It was fantastic for the children here at Crescent School to gain an insight into the culture of their classmates and we very much appreciate our Nigerian families helping us to have a better understanding of what it means to be from Nigeria.

Around The Classes

Reception Round Up

Some of the things the children have been learning...
In Literacy we have used Peace at Last (Jill Murphy) and It’s ok to be Different (Todd Parr) to explore families. We have written about our favourite parts of the story and completed sequencing activities.

In handwriting we have been learning to form cursive h and  b.

In Maths we have started to explore simple addition up to 5. We have combined sets to make totals of 5, starting to investigate number bonds.

In our PSHE work we have started our ‘Protective Behaviours’ program to teach key messages;
  • We all have the right to feel safe at all times
  • We can talk with someone about anything, no matter what it is
Some of the things the children will be learning next week...
We will be using the well-known tale Little Red Hen as our focus in Literacy. We will be sequencing the story and even making bread.

In handwriting, our next letters will be cursive and k which are the last letter in Harriet’s tall family.

In Maths we will begin to compare numbers, identifying the biggest and smallest in a set. We will be counting on and back from given numbers and continuing with simple addition.

In phonics we have been practising single sounds…

c   k   e   u   r   h   b   f

How to help your child at home…
  • Practise counting to 20 and beyond
  • Practise writing numbers 0-10
  • Explore ways to make 5
  • Practise writing first and last names – try to use cursive letters that have been introduced
  • Share new and familiar rhymes/stories
  • Encourage the children to dress/undress independently and pack their own school bag
What’s coming up/notices/information...
Children only need either their blazer or coat in school, not both.

Thank you for your support with cursive letters at home. We are aware some of the children are finding this difficult but it does get easier. If it helps please feel free to write a few letters for the children to trace. They have previously been introduced to the focus letter in class so should just need a little further practise to reinforce formation.

Class 1Q Music

Children in 1Q learned a song from Jack and the Beanstalk that had clapping actions. They had to clap twice in the rests – the spaces between notes – while they were singing the chorus of the song. They managed to clap, sing and keep to the beat at all the same time!

Class 2W PE

Children in 2W work as hard in PE as they do in the classroom. They understand the benefits of getting their heart beat and breathing working harder through active warm ups and then moved on to precision aiming to score points as they aimed beanbags at hoops of differing distances. The variety of strategies used were fascinating!

Class 2E RE

In RE we learned about the Jewish Celebration of Sukkot and talked about how Jewish people build a Sukkah in their gardens and stay in it for two days as part of their celebrations.

The children were tasked with building their own Sukkah in groups following the rules of three walls and a roof made of natural materials found outside. Fabulous creativity was on show.

Class 2E Maths

Anyone seen a right angle? Our maths detective skills have been put to the test this week in a hunt for right angles. We took our right angle finders and set off to track them down. Turns out they are everywhere!

We created a venn diagram to asses the properties of different shapes - identify how many corners each shape had and how many of those were right angles.

Class 1Q Round Up

This week in Maths, we have been learning about 2D shapes and sorting them into Venn diagrams. We practiced doing this physically before completing similar tasks in our work books.

We were creative in Art this week, as we incorporated our humanities topic 'houses' into our art lesson. The children had lots of fun choosing their own materials to create their unique houses.

In writing, we have wrote our very own books based off the story Knuffle Bunny and are looking forward to sharing it with our families.

U10s Girls ISA Midlands Football Tournament

The Crescent U10 girls side made their coaches, parents and whole school extremely proud last Friday with a simply phenomenal series of performances from the whole squad to lift the ISA Midlands trophy as outright champions. Crescent got their two toughest matches of the day out of the way early, with two hard fought draws against strong Twycross and Crackley sides. From there the girls were really able to show both their class and determination, winning their other eight games in true style, all without conceding a single goal! This gave them the superb record of being unbeaten on the day, winning 8 games out of 10, drawing 2, scoring 35 goals and letting in only 1... a true champion level performance.

Special mentions really must go to the entire team, with Roisin, Amber, Sophia and Evelyn all scoring valuable goals, Ava and Isabella industrious in midfield, Seren and Esme simply unbeatable in defence, and MingYi incredible in goal.

U11 And U10 Football v Repton

U11A Boys vs Repton U11A
It's an old adage in sport that the better the opposition the better you play, and this could not have been more the case for the U11 A team's encounter with a very strong Repton side.

Although eventually coming out on the wrong side of a 6-3 scoreline, Crescent played thoroughly fantastic, exciting and mature football throughout. In a truly end-to-end game, with just as many chances at either end, superb team goals from Timi, Sam B and Zac saw Crescent fight back again and again, but unfortunately they just couldn't match Repton's clinical finishing in front of goal.

Joint players of the match were Sam B and Timi for their excellent strength and battling in all over the pitch.

Mr Adkins
Teacher of Boys Games

U11B Boys vs Repton U11B
The U10 Bs romped to a 12-0 victory in their game against Repton's second team. The key to the success was passing and movement and the quality of play was exceptional. They showed good grace in victory as well, without over celebrating, and returned the warm welcome that we enjoyed. The sausage and chips at the end went down a treat to round off a very satisfactory afternoon.
