Welcome to The Courier, Crescent School's electronic newsletter.

It was lovely to welcome the children back into school after their half term break.

It’s been a busy week, so do have a read of our Around The Classes section to find out what the children have been up to.

Don’t forget it is our 75th Anniversary Summer Fete this weekend. We are looking forward to seeing everyone there, and also to welcoming lots of Old Crescentians back to their old school.

Do keep an eye on the Calendar and Events sections, for updates for the term ahead.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents and Friends

The temperatures have risen gradually during the week and promise to do so again over the weekend. This might bring some storms with it apparently and we are crossing fingers fairly tightly that this won't affect tomorrow’s summer fete. The show must go on of course, and I very much hope to see many of you and your children there for some fun tomorrow afternoon. Alongside the fete we are running an event for Old Crescentians to mark the 75th anniversary of the school, which will run inside the building, with the fete itself out on the field.

With this in mind, I would remind parents that children attending tomorrow need to be fully in the care of their families and they won't be allowed in the building, other than for the use of the toilet facilities.

Many thanks to everyone for their contributions to various stalls and prize draws, which have been coming in over the last two weeks, and special thanks to the FoC committee and helpers for all of their hard work setting this up.

Earlier this week we had a real highlight of the term with the Upper School sports day taking place over at Princethorpe College. The weather was pretty chilly but the children managed to generate lots of warmth with the way they competed, as well as the way they looked after each other. It was a really great event with so much endeavour and hard work on show, coupled with genuine sportsmanship and mutual care. I know those of you who came will have been really impressed with both these aspects of the day. Well done to Blue House for their overall win but, more than that, well done to everyone for taking part in such a good spirit.

Practising for the Reception and Pre-Prep sports days is well underway, as are the rehearsals for the drama productions, which are now just around the corner. With the stage sets and costumes taking shape in the rehearsals in the hall, these look like they will be a real treat.

I hope you have a really good weekend, when it comes, and once again I look forward to seeing you tomorrow from 12pm onwards at the school fete.

Crescent Says Farewell To Dinner Lady Mrs Green

Staff and pupils at Crescent School said a fond farewell to one of their long-serving dinner ladies today. Mrs Trudy Green has worked at the school for 24 years and will be sadly missed by all the staff, and especially by the children.

After serving up thousands of school dinners, Mrs Green is moving on and she was given a special send-off in assembly this morning when Esme and Charlie presented her with flowers and a thank you card from all the children. Mrs Green also received a thank you gift from Ms Forth on behalf of the staff and a very special hand made cake from the catering team.

Mrs Green said the school had been a huge part of her life since she started back in 1999 and that she would miss the Crescent very much. Over the years she has enjoyed helping the school celebrate many jubilees and she has always loved working as part of such a great catering team.

Joe Thackway, Headmaster, said, “Mrs Green has been a wonderful member of our school community feeding generations of children who have passed through the school. She has always had such a sunny disposition; she loves the children, and they all love her.”

Goodbye and good luck Mrs Green!

Crescent’s Sports Day Was A Super Record-Breaking Success

Crescent School’s Key Stage 2 Sports Day took place on Tuesday 6 June on Princethorpe College’s playing fields. The day dawned dry but cold and the chilly wind kept everyone on the toes. Sports Day is always super fun for everyone at school and race after race, event after event our young athletes didn’t disappoint, as they leapt, threw and sprinted to make this year’s Sports Day another super record-breaking success.

Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6 competed separately in sprints, a middle distance 600m run, the Long Jump, High Jump, a Throwing Challenge and the House Relay Race. All the events were hotly contested and as always there were some smashing new school records.

They included:

Years 3/4 Boys 600m - Thomas (3S) – 2.14.56 minutes
Years 5/6 Boys 600m - Sam B (5F) - 2.13.49 minutes
Years 5/6 Girls 150m - Ellie (6W) - 23.71 seconds
Years 5/6 Boys 150m - Edward G-H (5F) - 25.19 seconds

At Crescent, Sports Day isn’t just about the competition, it is also all about the participation. On the day every child took part and, most importantly, every child had fun. As is always the case the children’s behaviour was impeccable, they offered support and encouragement to each other and congratulated and commiserated with good heart. True Olympic spirit on show all round.

At the end of a very busy morning, Mr Thackway was delighted to announce the House results and to present the trophies. It was a very close affair with just one point in it in the end. Many congratulations to the blues this year!

Years 3 and 4 Overall - St Andrew’s House
Years 5 and 6 Overall - St Andrew’s House
Key Stage 2 Overall – St Andrew’s House

A big thank you to all of the staff involved in organising and running the event, both from the Crescent and from the Princethorpe Foundation.

We hope you all enjoy the photos.

Sports Day Record Breakers

This morning in assembly Mr Thackway congratulated all the children in the Upper School on their great sportsmanship on Tuesday at Sports Day. Everyone applauded St Andrew’s for winning the House Sports Cups this year and pupils also gave a big cheer to Thomas, Sam, Ellie and Edward who all set new school records in the following events. A huge well done to them all!

Years 3/4 Boys 600m - Thomas (3S) – 2.14.56 minutes

Years 5/6 Boys 600m - Sam B (5F) - 2.13.49 minutes

Years 5/6 Girls 150m - Ellie (6W) - 23.71 seconds

Years 5/6 Boys 150m - Edward G-H (5F) - 25.19 seconds

Year 6 Slapton 2023

Most of 6W joined Mr Adkins and me on the adventure of a lifetime down at Slapton Ley Field Centre in Devon at the end of May. They all came home with many memories to share, tired from the long days and amazing walks and activities and an appreciation of home. They were all stars, each one facing different challenges of homesickness, big hills, food, sharing rooms, insects and wild wees - but they did it and should be proud.

Young Artists’ Summer Show

In March this year, I submitted some children’s artwork for the Young Artists’ Summer Show. It was a very competitive competition with over 21,000 submissions. The judges were completely blown away by all the entries. They said they loved every artwork that was submitted and making the final selection was incredibly hard. Unfortunately, none of our children’s work was selected but the judges thanked the children for sharing their creativity with them and hoped they would have another go next year.

During Friday’s assembly, the children received certificates from the Royal Academy for taking part and had the chance to show their wonderful artwork to the rest of the school.  See next week's Courier for photos of the art work.

Class 5F Geometry

This week 5F have been applying their geometry skills to 2D nets in the hope they can be folded and stuck accurately to make a perfect 3D shape. Some children followed a ready made net, some copied a net, and some created their own from scratch with a piece of card, a ruler and a protractor. Pupils produced tetrahedrons, pyramids, prisms, octahedrons and one stella octangula!

All took a lot of concentration!

Co-Curricular Make And Do

The sun is out and we thought we would make some stained glass window crafts. We used tissue paper in various colours to make our designs and we carefully laid them on a laminating sheet. There were many colours used by the girls, and designs included a ladybird and dragon. When we were happy with our craft, Mrs Olner carefully put our sheets through the laminator.  We have a lovely piece of art to put on our windows and hopefully we will have some sun to shine through them.

Dear Parents

This year we are excited to be hosting the summer fete on Saturday 10 June from 12pm -2.30pm to coincide with the School's 75th anniversary celebrations.

As the event is on a Saturday we have designed it to suit the whole family, so in addition to the usual stalls and inflatables there will be a licensed bar, hot food and ice creams.

Entry is free of charge, but if the children would like to play the games on the stalls they will require a game card which is £5. Cards with five stamps or more can be handed in to receive a prize. Game cards are available through Classlist. If you are not on Classlist please use the following link https://app.classlist.com/events/#/events/view/986071211

Raffle tickets can be purchased either through Classlist or on the day itself.

As always we would love your support to help make the event a success so if you can spare 30-45 minutes to help run a stall at the event we would be eternally grateful!

Many thanks to all those who have donated, we have some lovely bundle prizes for you to win!

Finally, this year the profits of our teddy bear stall will go to Pawprints Dog Rescue - which the school is supporting this term.
