Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

In today’s Courier you will see a news update on our plans for redeveloping the on-site nursery building. We will be naming the building the Horton Centre, in recognition of the school’s origins at Horton Crescent in the centre of town. I’m delighted that we have now reached a point where planning permission has been granted and we are starting to look at the finer details with our identified building contractors.

I know that parents will be keen to understand the impact of the building work on the school operations. I can assure you that I am equally determined to make sure that this works well for the benefit of everyone. For that reason, we have brought forward the entry date to the building which should allow us to crack on with preliminary work during the last month of the school term. This will be carefully managed with little or no impact on the children’s learning or play.

Obviously, the next big question will be when the project will be finished. Our plan is that the sign off date will be at the end of August, allowing us to enter the building the week before the start of the school year. I would make it clear that if for any reason we are not able to get in at that time, we have clear plans in place to accommodate all of the children within the existing classrooms.

I will be able to give a full update on progress and plans at the Welcome Evening on 1 July, when we will be a month into the project. The opportunities that this new build provides for all the children in the school are enormous, not just in the short term but going forward for years ahead. These are exciting times for the school, there is no doubt about it.

My congratulations to the cross-country team that took part in the races on Wednesday. Lots of the children were a little nervous beforehand but everybody came back thrilled with the experience. I am hoping to get over to Crackley Hall myself next week to accompany the boys’ football team, which I am looking forward to.

April showers seem to have moved forward to May this year and we have had plenty of varying intensity at school in the last week. These looks set to continue over the weekend so I hope you can dodge most of them and enjoy some quality time with your children.

Best wishes

Moving Out Of Lockdown

On Monday this week the government announced the next stage of the route out of lockdown which comes into force on Monday 17 May 2021.

As part of this, schools have been issued with renewed guidance on all aspects of educational provision. In truth, much has not changed and the common sense interpretation of the new document is that we continue much as we have done over the last number of weeks since the return to school in March. For example, the staggered day and zoned play areas will remain in place. We will continue to request that visitors to the school follow our strict covid protocols and that deliveries and drop offs of uniform are left in the boxes outside the front door.

Guidance around wearing masks has not changed for primary schools and staff will continue to wear them in public areas and when moving around classrooms in close proximity to the children. Again, there is no change to the requirements for testing should you or anyone in your household develop symptoms and possibility of groups having to isolate if they if we do encounter a live case is still there. We will continue to advise parents to wear face coverings when coming onto the school grounds, in line with Warwickshire Authority guidance.

One thing we do intend to change is the groupings of children within their bubbles. The bubbles themselves will remain firmly in place and children will be taught by specialists in their home form room. However, we will now allow more collaborative learning where children can work together in pairs and in groups within their class bubble. This is an important part of the way that children learn in primary schools and I'm pleased to say the new guidance allows this to return.

We will continue to watch closely the gradual relaxation of safety rules and we will follow these in school based on our own risk assessment of the children's needs. I cannot thank parents and the wider community enough for all of the support that you have shown for our risk assessment measures during the last year or so. The support that you have all given to the school during this time has been a major factor in us being able to provide a safe working environment for children and staff.

On that note, please note if children have any of the Covid symptoms they must receive a negative result from a PCR test before returning to school. A lateral flow test is not sufficient, due to the variance in reliability of the tests.

Absence Requests For Holiday During Term Time

Parents are discouraged from taking pupils out of school during term-time because of the impact it has on their learning. Should this be unavoidable, permission should always be sought in advance from myself.  I am able to pre-authorise absences on certain grounds such as religious observances and special family occasions.

Please ensure you submit any absence requests in good time, through either My School Portal or via the office email admin@crescentschool.co.uk.

Crescent School To Benefit From Enhanced Facilities From September

Planning permission has been granted for the Crescent School in Bilton, Rugby to transform a building at the heart of its campus.

Work on the 250m2 building, which was previously leased to Pathfinders Nursery, will begin shortly and will be completed before the start of the next academic year.

The building will be known as the Horton Centre, reflecting the school’s origins on Rugby’s Horton Crescent.

Comments Joe Thackway, Headmaster, "Our vision for the Crescent is for it to be a small but perfect preparatory school. Part of our development strategy over the last few years has been to upgrade and update our facilities. This has been constrained by our site and the desire to maintain the outdoor space we have for sport and recreation."

"We now find ourselves in the unique position of being able to significantly enhance our facilities for the benefit of the whole school community. The Horton Centre will house a classroom for our Year 2 children, a flexible space for the Performing Arts and our Before and After School wrap around care will benefit from a new home."

Having negotiated earlier access to the building, work is expected to commence in June and the site will be sectioned off securely and kept separate from the working school areas.

The approved plans now include two new sets of double doors straight out on to the playground which will especially benefit children attending After School providing them with the opportunity for outside play. The new Year 2 classroom will also have its own dedicated outside space, while Years 3 and 4 will gain a dedicated break out space. The finish will be similar to the recent refurbishment of the library and the top of the Green Mile.

The Crescent is a thriving 4 to 11 co-educational independent day school, which forms part of the Princethorpe Foundation. The school has an Open Evening planned for Thursday 27 May, where, by appointment, visitors will be able to tour the school in a socially distanced way and speak to members of staff.

Happy Eid

In assembly this morning we wished ‘Eid Mubarrak’ to all Muslims around the world who are celebrating this weekend as Ramadan comes to an end. We heard readings from children in Year 6 about the history and traditions of the festival, and in particular the focus on charity and considering the needs of others.

If you have been celebrating this week, everyone at Crescent wishes you a wonderful Eid.

Upper School Art Appointment

Mr Webb and I have been lucky enough to interview and observe art teachers over the past week as Miss Plenderleith returns to Princethorpe College to teach full time. We were inundated with applications from many impressive candidates who wanted to work at Crescent.

We are pleased to announce that after much deliberation over a final three, Mrs Amanda Thackway has been appointed for the role. Mrs Thackway, wife of Mr Thackway, comes with glowing references, personal artistic talent, and a wealth of experience in both independent and state schools. We felt that she would push forward art in school and the children who were lucky enough to be her class on the day said, 'She taught us all the skills we need to know as we haven't used this technique before.'

Mrs Thackway will join the Crescent staff from September.

Warwickshire Safeguarding Board - Stranger Awareness

We have been asked by Warwickshire Safeguarding Board to make parents aware of the following incident:

Stranger Danger Incident on 7 May 2021

A student from Rugby School has reported the following:

At 4.30pm on 7 May, a Year 9 boy was walking to a lesson along the Hillmorton Road.

A male driver in a white car, not sure of the make, had his window open and asked the boy whether he would like some sweets and held up the bag. He persisted in asking a couple of times and asked him to get into the car.

The boy went into the nearest building and reported to a member of staff.

This matter has been reported to the police.

As a result of this the Warwickshire Safeguarding Board have provided the folliwng advice:

As promoted by Warwickshire Safeguarding Board’s Taking Care Scheme please do not teach blanket ‘stranger danger’ messages to children. The reason for this is that sometimes a stranger is the only person who can help us and is a far safer option than not talking to anyone. e.g. a child lost in a shop is far safer to tell a stranger they are lost than to wander off looking for the person they have separated from. We may choose to discuss the likely ‘safest’ strangers in such scenarios such as a mother with a pram or small children or someone who works in the shop.

However, we do need to clarify the stranger issue as plainly there are situations we may want to warn children about for their own safety e.g.

  • not to get in a car with anyone (NOT just someone they don’t know) unless their parent/guardian knows who/where/when etc and has given permission
  • not leaving school with someone other than who they were expecting unless their parent/guardian knows who/ where/when etc and has given permission and they have checked with a school staff member. Sometimes a password system is used so that children are only released into the care of an adult who can give the correct password – this is usually changed as soon as it has been used once
  • not to walk off with anyone (NOT just someone they don’t know) unless their parent/guardian knows who/where/when etc and has given permission
  • If someone tries to grab them it is ok to break all the rules of politeness to others e.g. scream, kick, punch, bite…etc. Whatever they need to do to draw attention to themselves and alert others to the fact they are in danger.

Please reinforce these safety messages to the children regularly without giving them the idea that ALL strangers are ‘bad’.

We would reiterate to keep younger siblings closely by your side at drop off and pick up.

Yellow House Play Leader Training

A fabulous sunny day for the Yellow House Play Leader training last Friday enabled students to show off their creative talents and organisational skills at their best. Pupils looked at the qualities and attributes required to be a good leader, analysed their own current strengths and the areas they wanted to develop and improve.

They worked on improving these skills throughout the day, as pupils had the opportunity to create and run their own games, explaining the aims and rules to their peers. Pupils worked extremely hard and showed fantastic teamwork, co-operation and organisational skills.

Well done Yellow House. We are looking forward to seeing you put your new skills to good use.

Royal Mail Competition

We will be running a competition organised by the Royal Mail over the next couple of weeks before half term.

In the competition pupils have the chance to design a stamp honouring 'Heroes' from times during the pandemic. As well as have the winning entries made into actual stamps, entrants and schools can win cash prizes.

Teachers will go through the rules of the competition with the children in class but they may bring their designs home for completion.

An overview of the rules plus terms and conditions can be found here; we will be entering the 4–11 year old section.

All entries must be in school on Tuesday 26 May in order to be posted for the Friday deadline.

Good Luck to everyone.

Mental Health Awareness Week

In Monday's assembly we recognised that it this week was Mental Health Awareness Week and that the focus this year is how we connect with nature. This was linked to our School Promise theme of being a 'Good Learner' as 'we listen and don't interrupt' and the importance of good listening.

We reflected that we just don't listen with our ears but the whole of our body! We have been practising whole body listening this week and the importance of taking time to listen to the sounds around us and connecting with the sounds of nature. The following link has some easy ways to connect with nature both indoors and out.

Co-Curricular Outdoor Learning

The children in Outdoor Learning club were very industrious today, building a hotel complex for bugs. It comprises of buildings, path and flower gardens. It already has its few residents: a tiger slug, a few woodlice and… a fairy!

Esme found a fairy door and the fairy house also has a window. We were so excited! The children left a welcome present of a small flower on the fairy’s doorstep and we cannot wait to return next week and make friends with the fairy.

School Promise

School Promise Rule Of The Week

This week’s promise is in the category of Good Learners and focuses on the theme of listening.

This is such a key attribute for learning. A pupil who really listens actively, takes on advice and feedback and takes action on what they have heard, genuinely does demonstrate the learner profile that makes such a difference in the classroom.

‘We listen and don’t interrupt’

It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages from our School Promise.

Digital Citizenship

The Importance Of Typing

When we think of essential life skills for our children, typing isn’t necessarily something that is at the front of our minds…but that really shouldn’t be the case, as learning to touch type is one of the most valuable skills that a child can learn. It not only helps them with their school work, which will become vital when moving up to Secondary school, but can also set them up with an advantage in later life when it comes to exploring job opportunities.

Many jobs now require quick typing skills, but with advances in technology that’s set to become even more important. It is great for reluctant writers, and good for improving spelling and concentration There are also physical and health considerations, as learning to touch type correctly at a young age can help improve posture, reduce time spent at the keyboard, and reduce the risks of RSI.

On top of this, Primary age is actually the best time to learn basic typing skills, and can be made incredibly fun! There are a whole host of programs, schemes and packages out there to help children learn to type, both free and paid for, but at Crescent we use a fantastic website called https://www.typing.com/ that really does do it all! The brilliant thing about typing.com is that as well as a host of fun games to practice speed and accuracy, it also has a real focus on getting the basics right, such as finger position and posture, through really easy to follow videos. All pupils already have their own log-ins that they can use, will be familiar with the site, and it can be accessed anywhere through a web browser, so using it to enhance those skills at home is very straightforward!

Please do encourage your children to have a go at home! Like when learning most things, little and often is the best way to go, and you would amazed at just how quickly speed and accuracy with increase. Parents feel free to have a go too as it’s free, you will just need to create your own account!

Happy typing.

U9 And U8 Netball Reports

It was fantastic to be able to welcome Crackley Hall to the school site last week for our first fixture of this academic year.   The excitement from all was palpable and thankfully the sun was shining adding to the wonderful warm atmosphere.

U9A

The U9As played a fast and furious game, with end to end play in all four quarters.  All girls displayed fantastic footwork, strong communication skills and competitive spirit.  Solid defence from Zara and Ava made it hard for Crackley to get the ball in to their shooters in the first half of the game with both players reading the game well and making fabulous interceptions.  Tegan and Mya showed great supportive play and good spatial awareness positioning themselves well to help Ellie and Bella moved the ball swiftly up court to Grace and Esme in our attacking circle.

Crackley came out strong after half time with a couple of positional changes and moved the ball well in to their shooting circle scoring two goals in the 3rd quarter.  Crescent girls responded well, keeping their calm and responded well to the challenge, making great interceptions and moving the ball fluidly giving Grace and Esme lots of opportunities which came to fruition in the final quarter. A very evenly matched game displaying lots of promise for the future.  Final score 2-1 Crackley.

U9B

The U9Bs rose to the occasion and thrived under the competition, dodging in to space to receive well timed and executed passes. Grace controlled the pace of the game well from centre with Chloe and Annalese giving good options to help move the ball through to Erin and Saira in attack.  A fabulous goal from Saira took Crescent in to the lead in the first quarter.  Lara and Libby worked hard in defence, always fighting for the ball and marking their opponents well to intercept and clear the ball out of the defensive circle quickly.  Despite their best effort Crackley scored to even up the 1st quarter.  Crescent continued with their grit and determination in the 2nd quarter and lovely movement from Erin saw the ball passed in to Saira to score the 2nd goal.  A few changes at half time saw Zahra come in to defence holding the circle well stopping all attempts in to the Crackley Goal Shooter. With Poppy and Lara supporting, Zahra was able to swiftly move the ball back up to our attacking half and in to the circle for Chloe and Erin to have a go. The game ended in a 2-2 draw.

U8

The U8 girls were both nervous and excited at the prospect of their first ever netball match. Leela, match Captain, had a master plan so all was well!! In the weeks leading up to the game the girls had worked incredibly hard, learning their positions and the rules of the game.

The Crackley girls started strong and managed to get through our tenacious defence in the first half to score six goals. Crackley’s goal shooter looking very experienced.  Roisin, Leela and Alice continued to work tirelessly to try and stop the attack with excellent defensive work marking the Crackley players. Hattie moved well on the turn overs and helped to get the ball moving with some quick passing down the middle.

In the second half the Crescent girls started to find their rhythm and managed to produce some excellent passing play, Shayla and Emily linking together very well, showing some great movement into space. Sofie used her agility to block Crackley and passed some excellent balls to Maisie who worked the attacking circle well.  Grace and Maisie then went on the attack, and found themselves in great positions, with some excellent shots on goal. Moving into defence, Maggie took to the change of role superbly and helped to slow down the Crackley attack with some fabulous interceptions.

The girls were shattered at the end, and it was a testament to the effort they put into the game. They held their positions on the pitch, their footwork greatly improved and they created more and more space as the game progressed. The girls worked hard, supported their team mates and showed great spirit.

Player Of The Game

U9A 1-2 loss – Player of the Game  - Ellie - Coaches Player – Zara

U9B  2-2 draw – Player of the Game – Lara - Coaches Player - Grace

U8 0-9 loss - Player of the Game - Maggie  – Coaches Players – Roisin & Maisie

All of the girls worked incredibly hard and showed fantastic sportsmanship and drive.  We are incredibly proud of all the girls, the support they showed for each other and the spirit they displayed in the game, truly displaying the Crescent School values.

Foundation Junior Cross Country Challenge

Staff and pupils were excited to travel to our first away fixture in over a year when Crescent's Year 5 and Year 6 boys and girls raced against Crackley's Junior 5 and 6 pupils in our first ever Inter-Foundation cross-country race.

There were a few nerves, but all pupils were very keen to compete, and enjoyed the winding 1600m course around the school field with plenty of energy and enthusiasm. After lots of hard work on pace running and target setting in home learning and then when we returned to school in March, pupils knew what they had to do, and they all set off showing great determination and perseverance. For each race the first six athletes counted for the team score.

The Year 5 girls' race was the first to get going with Evie taking the lead and controlling the race from the outset, she set a great pace which she was able to sustain, and it all came down to the final sprint between her and Crackley's leading pupil, unfortunately in this instance Evie couldn't hold her off but finished gallantly in 2nd place. Crescent girls came in thick and fast with six finishing in the top 10 places to secure the team win for Crescent; Eva 5th, Katherine 6th, Stephanie 7th, Charlotte 8th and Liana 9th.

The Year 5 boys were next to go, strong competition between Crackley boys saw a fast pace set but Crescent boys did not let this fluster them and stop them from running their race, solid performances from all boys saw Kai in 6th and Ro in 10th with all pupils working hard and pushing themselves through their comfort barrier to produce their best performance.

Year 6 girls showed fantastic grit, determination, and maturity, again knowing their bodies and their pace and not being put off by some speedy starters from Crackley. Fantastic running from Amy saw her come home in 2nd place, Hattie 4th, Emme 5th, Asha 6th, Sahana 7th and Amelia 10th securing the Crescent team win.

The final race was Year 6 boys which again did not disappoint with all students giving their all and showing fabulous work ethic and team spirit, knowing that every score counted. Athletics captain Josh was the first Crescent pupil home in 2nd place with George R in 6th, Isaac 12th, Hany 13th, Ollie 18th and Jay 19th.

It was a fantastic performance by all of Crescent's pupils and their efforts made us all proud not only whilst running but also in the energy and compassion they showed in their support of one another cheering and encouraging each other along. Thank you and well done all.

Bag2school Collection

We have arranged for Bag2school (www.bag2school.com) to do a school collection on Tuesday 22 June 2021.

Bag2school is a fundraising scheme which collects unwanted textiles and sells them to importers and textile manufacturers in many countries of Eastern and Western Europe, Africa and Asia - all of benefit to the circular economy.

This is an excellent way to get rid of all the unwanted clothing etc you have been collecting during lockdowns!  After collecting the items they will weigh them and present FoC with a cheque.

A list of the items they will collect can be found here.

Weather permitting, the playground will be open to drive your vehicle in and unload any clothing bags from 3pm - 5pm on Monday 21 June.

Covid Symptoms Guidance And School Process

Children or adults with symptoms must not enter school. Parents must check for symptoms each day before bringing their child into school.

The main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are:

  • a high temperature – please, if you have not already done so, source a thermometer to check temperatures at home
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Any children or adult who develops symptoms will need to leave the building as soon as possible and be tested for Covid-19.

Details on testing can be obtained at www gov uk/get-coronavirus-test or call the Test and Trace Helpdesk on 119.

Hand held thermometers will be used to check the temperature of any individual feeling unwell. Children who develop symptoms during the school day will be taken to the Meeting Room and their parents called to come and collect the child, as well as any siblings of the child.

Other members of the household should self-isolate for 10 days from when the symptomatic person first had symptoms, or until a negative test result is returned.

In the event of a positive test result the full protocols of test and trace will be followed www.gov.uk/guidance/nhs-test-and-trace-how-it-works#

Children returning from restricted areas outside UK must self-isolate as advised by the government guidance before returning to school.
