Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

I was delighted this week to stage the Crescent’s first ever Inter-House Geography final. It is something I have brought with me from my previous school and Class VI have been great fun to take through the process again this year. It is an opportunity to learn about all of those geographical facts everyone is expected to know but never actually get taught in school, or at university for that matter. Longest rivers, highest mountains, the Dnieper or the Danube, the Baltic or the Black Sea, the Severn or the Trent. I normally find that this sort of thing really appeals to some of the children, and this was certainly the case again his year, but also that everyone benefits their own personal development with an understanding of the world and how things are connected and related.

Starting in September I was in two minds as to whether to continue teaching as it does of course involve a significant commitment with all the planning, marking, assessment and delivery it involves. The great thing of course is that it keeps me in close contact with the children as well helping me better to understand and assess the systems we have in place in the school.

One important landmark this week has been the online assessments that the children have completed. This has run very smoothly thanks to the careful planning of Ms Forth who is the deputy head here, as you know, and she has responsibility for the academic side of what we do. The information that we gather will of course be very useful in assessing children’s progress and helping us understand where each child is, as well as their areas for further improvement. Of course, the exams are only a snapshot and we also look closely at the ongoing assessment of the children’s work in lessons throughout the term, where their knowledge, skills and understanding are assessed against the criteria of the National Curriculum.

This exam fortnight will then feed in to the end of year reports that you will receive in the final week of term. Between now and then, the staff have a tremendous amount of work to do synthesise the data and provide important feedback for you that will help us all plan for the future fulfilment of the children’s academic potential.

One very important aspect of this is managing stress around this kind of formal assessment. There is of course no way of avoiding exams as you pass through the educational system and hopefully having your first experience of this in a friendly, supportive environment is the best preparation for what lies ahead. For Class V, of course, the entrance exam season is not too far away and this fits in well with the careful preparations that we are making for them to go into these fully prepared and ready.

The forecast for the weekend is good. My garden is now fully out of hibernation and I have my beans and courgettes in the ground and getting established. I am also taking part in my local 10km run with my son on Sunday, a family tradition that goes back to the 1980s when my brother and I ran with my dad.

I do hope you are able to spend some quality time enjoying the spring weather with your own wonderful children.

Nigel Lines RIP

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Nigel Lines on Thursday, 10 May 2018. Nigel joined the board of governors of Crescent School in 2000 after he retired from his role as a bank manager. He served as Chairman from 2006 until 2013 and eventually stepped down from the board in July 2015.

When he joined the board he was almost immediately involved in the biggest decision a governing body has to make – the appointment of a new Head. I was very fortunate that the board decided to appoint me so I worked with Nigel for 13 years and came to regard him as a very good friend and a wise counsellor.

Nigel was remarkably well-suited to the role of Chair of Governors because his professional life as a bank manager meant he understood the business side of school very well. Perhaps even more important was his understanding of the educational side of the school through his marriage to Pat who taught in infant schools in Coventry. He also clearly loved and understood children.

In his seven years as Chairman Nigel came into school at least once a week to talk through with me anything and everything that was happening in the school; an invaluable support to me as Headship can be a lonely position.  I was always confident that he was there to offer every support, encouragement and guidance he could whilst also feeling I enjoyed his complete trust. No Head could ask for more of their Chair.

He came in at other times to meet with the bursar to ensure the school was keeping within budget – no easy task during some very difficult financial times – and to keep on top of Health and Safety or general maintenance issues. Although perhaps his favourite job was standing in for Father Christmas at the Christmas Bazaar!

At his last governors’ meeting he very bravely told us that he was stepping down because he had been diagnosed with dementia.  He was succeeded as Chair by his wife, Pat, who equally bravely carried on in the role despite this very difficult and distressing situation. It would be difficult to overstate the debt of gratitude I, and all members of the school community in recent years, owe to Nigel and Pat.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Pat, and her son, daughter-in-law and family, at this sad time.

Crescent Junior da Vinci Student Badge Of Honour

Pupils at the Crescent School have wholeheartedly embraced the Junior da Vinci programme.  Over the school year they have worked hard to achieve creativity, practice and mastery in their different school subjects.  When they have received all three awards in an individual subject they are named as a Junior da Vinci student and a postcard is sent home to celebrate their achievement.  The school also enjoys celebrating their success in assembly and in The Courier.

This week Mr Thackway began awarding Junior da Vinci badges of honour.  From now a badge will be presented to the children when they achieve their first Junior da Vinci student award.  With its distinctive, three ring design the badge will be a fitting permanent record which can be worn proudly on their blazer lapels.

All the children who have already achieved Junior da Vinci student status will be presented with the badge.

A number of pupils have already achieved a Junior da Vinci award in more than one subject.  So competition for the Crescent School shield, which will be awarded to the boy and girl in the school who achieves the most number of complete awards, is really hotting up.

Senior Teacher, Ms Lowe, commented, "The school is delighted with the success of the da Vinci programme.  The children have enjoyed the challenges it presents and our new badges of honour are a deserving extra recognition of their achievement. I know there will be plenty more awarded over the remaining weeks of the school year.”

Inter-House Geography Final

On Tuesday this week the school enjoyed Crescent’s first ever house Geography final. The children in Class VI have been working hard all term learning about the mountains, seas, rivers and countries of the world and the highest scorers in the class quiz got to represent their house in the final. It was a close fought affair with the three houses neck and neck throughout.

Not many Class VI children around the country can locate St George’s Channel or the River Elbe on a map or name the capital of Ecuador, but ours did with some ease.

We finally had to go to a tie breaker to find a winner. Red house prevailed, accurately naming Ottawa as the capital of Canada, to win the brand new trophy.

Congratulations to all those who took part; and good luck to the Class V when your turn comes around next year.

Foundation Pupils Help Rugby And East Warwickshire Hockey To National Success

Class VI pupils Oliver Bell and Chris Gibson were part of Rugby and East Warwickshire Hockey Club’s Boys’ U12 Team that won the national title in the In2Hockey National Championships on Saturday 12 May.

Playing at the Nottingham Hockey Centre, the REW Team cemented their place as the best U12 club hockey team in the country. The boys played superbly to win 1-0 vs Old Loughtonions, 4-1 vs Harrogate, 3-2 vs Guildford and 2-1 vs Clifton Robinsons.  They faced a very capable team from Surbiton in a hard fought, nail-biting final, in a match that ended in an incredibly tense 2-2 tie.  The game went to penalty flicks, which REW then won 5-4. Chris as the goalkeeper saved the penalty flick that delivered the national title!

The trophy is now going on a tour of the boys’ schools and we look forward to seeing the silverware at Crescent soon.

Two other members of the REW Hockey Club U12 Team currently attend the Foundation senior school Princethorpe College. James Robinson and Will Antrobus are both in Year 7.  Another member of the team Edward Thomas is an Old Crescentian.

The Foundation saw success in the REW U12 Girls' team too, they performed nearly as well, coming a very respectable ninth in the country!  Several of the girls in the team also hail from Princethorpe including Jess Evans, Sophie Gray, Tilly Houghton and Alice Whittaker.

Getting to the Nationals was a great achievement in itself, what a brilliant day for so many pupils in the Foundation!

Class VI Leavers Hoodies

Class VI received their Leavers Hoodies in Assembly this morning.  They will all look smart in Slapton next week wearing them!

Thank you to the Friends of Crescent for this wonderful gift to remember their days at Crescent School.

Sudden Impulse Theatre Production Of The Comedy Of Errors By William Shakespeare

Friday 8 and Saturday 9 June 2018

The Sudden Impulse Theatre Company is returning to Princethorpe College in June for two outdoor performances of William Shakespeare's play, The Comedy of Errors.

Believed to be one of Shakespeare's earlier written plays; The Comedy of Errors is a true farce ahead of its time. The story involves two sets of twins, separated at birth, being thrown together in a tale of mistaken identity.

The performances are open to the public and will take place on the Sixth Form Lawn as follows:

Friday 8 June - 6.30pm to 10.00pm

Saturday 9 June - 3.30pm to 7.00pm

A wonderful opportunity to bring a picnic, settle down in your camping chair and enjoy some perfect summer entertainment.

Tickets are available from www.suddenimpulse.co.uk priced at £12 adults or £10 for concessions.

70th Anniversary Celebrations

Saturday 29 September 2018

This year the Crescent School celebrates 70 years since it was formally founded back in 1948.  70th anniversary celebrations are planned for the Michaelmas Term when the school will also officially mark 30 years at its current site.  On Saturday 29 September the school will open its doors and welcome pupils past and present back into school to celebrate its double anniversary.  It will be a fantastic opportunity for people to come and see their old school and to catch up with old friends.  There will be tours, displays, activities, the school choir will sing, the Bilton Silver Band will play and there will be refreshments available.

Do put the date in your diary and do encourage any Old Crescentians you know to get back in touch with the school and to come and join in the celebrations.

The school has created a Facebook Group the Old Crescentians which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/oldcrescentians/
to help connect past pupils.

It has been a wonderful 70 years for the Crescent School.

U9 Rounders' v King Henry's - A Game Of Two Halves

On Tuesday 15 May the U9 'A' and 'B' Rounders team travelled to King Henry VIII playing fields. Thankfully the sun was shining and it was a glorious evening for the fixture.

The U9 'A' team lost the toss and were put in to bat first. There was some great hitting but with solid fielding skills from King Henry's and a little indecision from ourselves on our running, we were unable to score any full rounders and managed a first half total of 3.  Crescent fielded the first innings well, with consistent bowling from Amelie Frere, confident play from backstop, Phoebe Causer, to Sienna Moran on 2nd base and good movement on the pitch from the rest of the team keeping King Henry’s score to 3 ½ rounders.

The 2nd innings however was unfortunately a different story, Crescent played it safe in their batting, missing a number of chances to score half rounders, whilst King Henry's went all out to ensure they scored as many as possible. Their new batting confidence caused Crescent to make a number of forced errors allowing King Henry’s to score 8 rounders in their 2nd innings.

Final score – Crescent 4 King Henry’s 12

Again the U9 'B' team lost the toss and went in to bat first. Batting was good with some solid hitting from all girls with Eve Ferguson impressing the opposition to score 2 rounders. Players had taken on board the feedback from the Bilton Grange game and communication between batters was much stronger stopping anyone from being run out. Fielding in the first innings was tight with some solid catching from Harriett Grey taking out one of Henry’s best batters. First innings score Crescent 2½ King Henry's 4½ .

Batting stayed consistently strong in our 2nd innings with half rounders from Eve Fergusson, Emme Edge, Amy Robinson and Jessica Sarkies scoring 3 rounders in the 2nd innings. Unfortunately, like the 'A' team, a loss of focus and concentration in fielding caused a number of mis-fields and inaccurate throws allowing King Henry’s to notch up 9½ rounders in the 2nd innings.

Final score, Crescent 5½ King Henry’s 14.

Although the score line was not in our favour there was plenty of fantastic play from all of the girls and some great learning experiences for us to take forward and develop before our next game against Crackley Hall next week.

Players player 'A' Team – Arabella Drinkwater
Players player 'B' Team – Freya Somerset

Fantastic effort and attitude by all of the girls supporting and encouraging each other throughout the whole game.

U11 Girls' Rounders v Crackley School And Ratcliffe College

All of the Class V and VI girls travelled to Crackley Hall on Wednesday 9 May to play their first rounders fixtures of the year against Crackley Hall and Ratcliffe College.

U11 'A' v Crackley Hall

The U11 'A' team won the toss against Crackley and put them in to bat first. Fantastic consistent bowling from Clara Woolf ensured Crackley had to work hard to earn their rounders. Georgia Dowling did a sterling job as backstop catching a player out behind and quickly fielding any backward hits to Rebecca Monteith’s safe hands on 2nd base to stop half rounders. With quick thinking and accurate fielding Crescent managed to get 7 out of the 9 batters out.

In bat we couldn’t quite find the gaps, but solid hitting allowed a number of half rounders to be scored by Cara Ridd, Amelie Edge, Mia Webb, Clara Woolf and Lucy Hardy.

Final Score: Crackley Hall 4 Crescent 4

U11 'A' v Ratcliffe

Ratcliffe won the toss putting us in to bat first. Having warmed up our batting arm against Crackley we made some great connections with the ball, unfortunately again not into the gaps with both Georgia Dowling and Robyn Shaw being caught out on their first hit. Ratcliffe were solid with their fielding making quick decisions and accurate throws to keep our score to 4. Clara Woolf bowled consistently again, however Ratcliffe had a number of big hitters who were able to take their total to 12 rounders.

Final score Crescent 4 Ratcliffe 12

U11 'B' v Crackley Hall

The U11 'B' Team also won the toss putting Crackley Hall in to bat first. Crescent took a little while to settle into play with nerves getting the better of them at the start. After a couple of changes of position in the field Crescent sharpened up their fielding skills getting the ball quickly to 2nd and 4th base.

Final Score Crackley 8 Crescent 4½

U11 'B' v Ratcliffe

Ratcliffe won the toss to put us in to bat first, having warmed up against Crackley we made some consistently good hits to score a number of half rounders from Sophie Causer, Arabella Dughmosh, Lily Emery and Maya Patel with Olivia Monk scoring a full rounder.

Ratcliffe again had some big hitters who tested our throwing arms making it hard to field the ball to 4th base quickly.

Final score – Crescent 4½ Ratcliffe 11½

Player of the game 'A' Team - Mia Webb
Player of the game 'B' Team - Lily Emery

A great team effort from all girls who displayed a fantastic attitude and team spirit throughout the games.

Well done to all.

Mrs McCollin
Head of Girls' Games

Tennis Round Up

Crescent had a challenging competition at Rugby School where they saw the level that some players reach where tennis is their main sport.

Crescent competed really well considering that the children play a much broader range of sports at school. In the end, they won the French Open which was a runners-up competition. Well done to Samuel Lau, Chris Gibson, Georgia Dowling and Matthew Browne.

The under 9s played in the local competition that Crescent won last year. They played some fantastic tennis and only lost out to eventual winners Dunchurch, who were an outstanding team. Nevertheless, three of the four matches went down to tie-breakers and it could have gone either way. Super tennis from George Bell, Tumi Oredope, Archie Dowling and Amelie Frere.

The under 11s compete next week. The Crescent intra-school competition is in full swing and we are approaching the semi-final stage. Oliver Bell, though unseeded, has moved through the rounds unchallenged and his brother George looked good before being knocked out by Daniel Pinks. Fifi Lloyd made the round of 16 and gave Ethan Capelett a tough match. Sixth seed Capelett is now in the quarters against Chris Gibson. The top seeds will have played today at the time of printing.

Cricket Round Up

The under 9s have played two matches so far. One against Warwick and one against Crackley Hall.

Warwick was a tough match and Crescent struggled with wides as well as striking boundaries. They lost in both the 'A' and 'B' teams.

Against Crackley, Crescent were much better with keeping extras down and scoring more frequently. George Bell and Josh Gorbutt have been the pick of the bowlers over the two matches in the 'A' team and Marco Rodriguez Hernandez the pick of the batters. Idan Dar has impressed with his fielding and bowling in the 'B' team. Crescent won both matches against Crackley.

Captains Bell and Henry Corbin have shown great maturity and organisational skills for their young age which has been a joy to see.
