Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

Welcome to this last edition of the Courier for the Spring Term. The weather has provided some great challenges for us during the last three months but we have battled through and managed to enjoy a really rich and varied programme with lots of sport, music, drama and hard work.

I do hope you are all able to spend good quality time with your families during the break and we look forward to welcoming you and the children back for the Summer Term on Wednesday 18 April. I am looking forward to getting my garden back into some kind of shape as well as a few days in the Lake District with my two sons.  My youngest son’s new year challenge was to camp out on a mountain top so that is the plan, weather permitting.

Next term I am particularly looking forward to launching the new School Promise and you will be able to read about an information meeting all about this elsewhere in the Courier, planned for Tuesday 24 April. I hope many of you will be able to come along.

We finished the term this afternoon with a delightful Easter Service courtesy of our Year 5 class and I have copied my final address below for those who were unable to attend.

With my best wishes for a relaxing Easter break.

Easter Service Address

At Easter, we seem to celebrate two different things, don’t we? On the one hand, we learn about the story of Jesus and his torments on the cross. On the other hand, we give each other Easter eggs and exchange cards, perhaps with pictures of fluffy bunnies on.

Does anybody know if there is a connection between these things?

Well I’ve been thinking about this and I think there is a connection. There is a common message hidden beneath the two stories and it is this; Easter is a time of renewal or of rebirth. It is a time for us to remember the message; don’t give up hope, even when things seem difficult.

When Jesus was on the cross, he was being tormented and teased by the guards and the other prisoners. He cried out, didn’t he, ‘My God my God, why have you forsaken me?’ He couldn’t see a way forward and he was doubting that things could ever be right again.

All of his followers at that time, I’m sure, were also full of despair. They felt that Jesus had been defeated and that all the messages of goodness and caring for one another that he had been teaching, would die with him on the cross.

However, of course, two days later Jesus rose again and met his friends and the future seemed different and full of possibilities.

Well, if you get out into the countryside in the woods and fields this holiday you will see a world full of hope for the future. There are lambs in the field, daffodils in the hedgerows, bluebells poking through the forest floor, birds nesting and laying their eggs, frogs and newts laying their spawn in ponds and ditches. In the natural world, although not in modern day farms, chickens start laying their eggs again in the spring, so yes, you might even see some lovely fluffy chicks, although you might need to go to a children’s farm to actually see that. They won’t be made of chocolate, you’ll need to try Sainsbury’s if you want to find one of them. Talking of shops, even B&Q and Ikea are full of families planning how to make their own nests more cosy and comfortable now that the spring is here.

So the message is, although the days can seem cold and dark through the winter, and we have had a few days like that this year, there’s always the prospect of spring ahead. Children, you might have had times this term when perhaps your work seemed hard, or perhaps you’d fallen out with a friend and you looked around and everything seemed to be problematic. Well, the message this Easter is that there is hope, that there is a better time ahead.

We need to keep reminding ourselves of the story of Jesus and the message that it holds. Try to see this Easter message in the world around you as spring finally unfolds itself.

New School Promise Information Evening

Dear Parents

We have been working on a new and exciting version of the school promise and would like to invite you to an information evening after school on Tuesday 24 April in the school hall.  Please come to the hall at the end of the school day and we will aim to start the presentation at 4.00pm.

At the meeting the School Councillors will be telling the story of how we put the new promise together and how it will be used in school in the future. As a school, one of our core aims is to provide a caring and supportive environment that enables the children to achieve their absolute best and the new promise is a really important part of how we want to achieve this.

Early next term all the children will be receiving their own Z-card (style of leaflet) with the new promise on which will include a place for you and your child to sign up to show your commiment. Again, we will tell you more about this on the evening.

Please put the date in your diary and do come along if you can. Your children are welcome to accompany you and it shouldn’t take longer than 30 minutes.

Best wishes

Crescent School To Shadow The Kate Greenaway Medal

This year Crescent School will be joining other schools across the country in shadowing the judging process for the Kate Greenaway Medal.

The shortlists for the 2018 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals, the UK’s oldest book awards for children and young people, were revealed earlier this month.  They celebrate the best in children’s writing and illustration and are unique in being judged by children’s librarians.

Children and young people 'shadow' the judging process for both the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Children's Book Awards; they read, discuss and review the books on each shortlist selected by CILIP's panel of Librarian judges, rating the books and voting on their favourites.

The Foundation's senior school Princethorpe College has shadowed the Carnegie medal for a number of years and found it introduces participating pupils to new books they otherwise might not have read.

This year Crescent School is going to join in.  The school is looking for children from Year 3 and above to join our shadowing panel.  They will need to read, discuss and review the seven shortlisted books.  Children interested in joining in should come along to Library Club.  All the children who get involved will rate the books and vote on their favourites.  It will be interesting to see if we pick the same winner as the actual judges do!

If you would like to find out more, please talk to Ms Lowe or Mrs Calder.

Josh Earns The Award For Swimmer With Most Promise

Crescent School’s Year 4 pupil, Josh Gorbutt swam superbly at the recent Year 3/4 Rugby Primary Schools Swimming Gala winning the Year 4 Boys 25m Breaststroke and earning himself the Gala Award for the swimmer who shows the most promise.

The gala took place on Wednesday 21 March at The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Centre, Rugby.  For a number of children, especially the younger ones, this was their very first competition and the size of the venue and the crowd were more than a little overwhelming but they stayed focused and harnessed their nerves to all swim superbly.

Josh was not the only Crescent success story at the gala as the school claimed three Town titles.  George Crowfoot won the Year 3 25m Breaststroke race and Rania Akbik, Sienna Moran and Issy Thompson won the Year 4 Girls Freestyle Relay (3 x 25m).

A number of Crescent School’s pupils were also in the placings with:

  • Hattie Sarkies - 2nd place - Year 3 25m Breaststroke
  • Amy Robinson - 3rd place - Year 3 25m Backstroke
  • Henry Corbin - 3rd place - Year 4 25m Backstroke
  • Henry Corbin, Connor Kennedy and Josh Gorbutt - Year 4 Boys Freestyle Relays - 3rd Place
  • Eve Ferguson - 4th place - Year 3 25m Freestyle
  • Connor Kennedy - 4th place - Year 4 25m Freestyle
  • Issy Thompson - 4th place - Year 4 25m Freestyle

Head of Girls Games, Rachel McCollin, commented, “What a fantastic effort from all of Crescent’s swimmers, they swam superbly and conducted themselves excellently.  This is a fabulous set of results for the school.”

Just to let you know that we will be having a meeting on Thursday 19 April at 7.00pm in the School Hall, regarding our trip to Slapton Ley Field Centre in May.  The meeting will go over the finer details of what the children need, our expectations, what they will experience and will be an opportunity for you to ask questions.

U11 Interhouse Netball Tournament

Wednesday 21 March saw the U11 Girls' netball season close with the annual Interhouse Competition. The netball season has unfortunately been hampered with lots of cancelled games due to poor weather conditions however the Crescent girls turned out with a smile and lots of style for their Interhouse Competition.

The competition started off with a shooting contest in which every pupil was given the opportunity to score, selecting tactically which cone they wanted to shoot from. There was only one player from each house that was able to maximise points for their team in this shoot out, Ella Knight for St George, Cara Ridd for St David and Rebecca Monteith for St Andrew, however Rebecca’s shot was further away from the net and scored the most points taking her house in to the lead.

On to the netball games, the first game up was St George V St David and this was a well fought game with some lovely passing from both sides seeing the ball move quickly from end to end. However, it was St David who were able to make the most of their shooting opportunities and took the win. Final score: 3-1 to St David.

The second game was St George V St Andrew and it quickly saw St Andrew take the helm with some hot shooting from Rebecca Monteith. Rebecca commanded the circle rarely missing a shot - she had clearly taken inspiration from watching the Wasps Goal Shooter, George Fisher, the Sunday before! St George fought bravely and solid play in centre court from Mia Webb and Lucy Hardy enabled them to get into their attacking circle on several occasions, however, St Andrew’s proved themselves too strong for them this time. Final score: 11-1 to St Andrew.

The third and final game between St David and St Andrew was going to be crucial with both teams having won one game. It was a tightly-contested game with strong centre court play from both teams moving the ball quickly to their attacking circle. It went down to the final minute with St David scoring an equalising goal to draw to match, meaning that the tournament would be won on goals scored putting St Andrew into pole position. Final score: 4-4.

  • 1st Place – St Andrew
  • 2nd Place – St David
  • 3rd Place – St George

Player of the Tournament went to Rebecca Monteith.

Well done girls, some fantastic play seen across the teams.

ISA U11 Midlands Rugby Tournament

Crescent took part in their first contact rugby tournament on Friday 23 March at the ISA U11 Midlands Rugby Tournament at Princethorpe College. Looking to grow the sport in school, the children have been working hard all year to develop their skills ahead of the tournament.

In the first match, Crescent had lots of the ball but were slow to the breakdown and being turned over cost them tries. In the second match, they supported each other much better and made use of strategic kicks. They scored a couple of tries but unfortunately were beaten.

In the last match in the group, they were pitted against the strongest team. Having started to work better as a team, the Crescent boys took an early lead and were very unlucky not to get a second try (although credit must be given for a great last gasp tackle). Crescent’s strong runners caused problems but some missed tackles meant that the opposition got back into the game and eventually won.

Based on their group rankings, Crescent went on to play two further matches against the teams who had finished in a similar position to theirs in other groups. Unfortunately, illnesses and injuries meant that some of the stronger players in the team were not able to contribute. A 5-4 loss was the closest Crescent came to victory but the day a great learning curve for the boys and a pleasant experience as they enjoyed playing rugby with their school mates.

Crescent School's Hockey success continued over the weekend when some of our U10 girls and boys qualified for the Midlands Finals as members of the Rugby and East Warwickshire Hockey County squad.
