Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

Earlier in the week we welcomed our trustees in to the school for an important meeting of the Education and Staffing Committee.  This is a chance for the trustees to look in some detail at various different aspects of our provision, with an emphasis on teaching and learning and the curriculum.  We had reports, both written and verbal, submitted from various members of staff with a wide range of responsibilities in the school, including pre-prep, learning support, RE, co-curricular, Year 7 transfer and the broader area of curriculum management.  These reports are then examined by the trustees and this provoked some interesting and useful discussions in a whole range of areas. We are fortunate to have a strong governing body, both here at Crescent and in the Foundation more broadly.  They play an invaluable role in setting and maintaining the highest possible standards and I see them very much as a 'critical friend'.  They were all very excited about everything they heard and gave us lots of positive and very welcome feedback, as well as ideas for further development.

One important new initiative we talked about was the school's new ethos and aims policy that we have been reviewing and, in particular, the new 'School Promise'.  This is a long-standing tradition in the school that we have been talking about with the children and working on with the School Council. We will have a finished product ready very soon and I intend to launch it to parents and children early next term in assemblies and a parents' meeting.  Keep an eye out for the date in next term's calendar.

Before the trustees came, in assembly, I warned the children to be on best behaviour and if they saw any trustee-type looking people to be extra polite and show them our lovely Crescent manners.  As you would expect, they did exactly that; opening doors, standing aside in the corridor, bidding good afternoon.  Short of bowing down before them or tugging forelocks, I could not have asked for more. They did everything they could to give a good impression so thank you children.

I am particularly looking forward to next Monday's Mastery Day.  There is more information about this in the Courier and it is sure to be a really exciting way to extend the children's learning and encourage the children to go beyond the tried-and-tested.  We are crashing the timetable, mixing up the classes and there will be challenges and puzzles for the children to attack and explore. It sounds like a great way to spend a Monday so be sure to ask your children all about it if you get the chance.

I hope you are all enjoying the ever-expanding Courier and I would encourage you to take the time to have a look at all of the links and articles that are on offer.  They are intended to be of interest but also practical and there is sure to be information in there that you will need to know to help and support your child in school.

Have a great weekend.

Inaugural 'Mastery Day' For Crescent Pupils

Monday 5 February 2018

We will be holding our first ‘Mastery Day’ on Monday 5 February. One of our school targets in the classroom this year is to provide opportunities to demonstrate mastery. All pupils will take part in this theme day in mixed age groups and be presented with tasks, puzzles, projects and conundrums all connected to the theme of ‘Party!’. Children will work together to reach conclusions, answers and solutions through using the skills they have learned so far.

We hope it will be a most enjoyable day for children and a fascinating day for staff to watch the pupils shine and rise to the challenges planned.

We look forward to sharing the results of our day, soon.

Coventry Cathedral Concert - Discovering The Classics

On Saturday 27 January Crescent School Choir returned to Coventry Cathedral to participate in another concert.

Entitled 'Discover the Classics', this concert was designed to give GCSE and A level students the opportunity to hear live performances of some of their set works.

Coventry Cathedral Chorus and the Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra performed works by Britten, Haydn, Handel, Faure, Stravinsky, John Williams and the Beatles.

The children’s choir, made up of pupils from Coventry and Nuneaton as well as from Crescent School, sang an arrangement of Rainbow’s 'Since you’ve been gone' and 'School Song' from Tim Minchin’s 'Matilda'. The concert ended with all the performers and the audience participating in a medley from 'Mary Poppins'.

We were delighted to be asked back and to be a part of this amazing event which gives pupils the opportunity to see and hear an orchestra and choir perform live.  We are so lucky to have such a superb venue almost on our doorstep!

Local History - Class VI Visit St Mark's Churchyard

As part of our local history topic on the Victorians, Class VI went to visit St Mark's Churchyard.

They discovered that there was much to be learnt from the gravestones. They gained information about popular names, the ages people died and tried to work our some of the stories behind the timelines that were evident.

Class VI are now going to compare this with the local census information that we have already studied.

Class I Fire Brigade Visit

On Tuesday this week, Class 1 were visited by Warwickshire Fire Service and took part in an interactive session that was both fun and informative.

The children chose Mrs Emery to be dressed in a fire fighters outfit and the children discussed each item of clothing and how it protects in a fire.  They learnt about safe fires (an adult supervised BBQ) verses unsafe fires, the importance of never playing with matches or lighters and how to 'Stop, Drop and Roll' if your clothes catch fire.

After learning that smoke rises and the safest place to be is on the floor if in a fire, the children took part in some role play, practising being woken by a smoke alarm, crawling quickly out of a building and staying out.

There was much excitement looking at the fire engine and listening to the siren. Lots of questions, lots of life saving learning and lots of fun.

A huge thank you to Warwickshire Fire Service for taking the time to deliver such an important session for the children.

Spotlight On Science

This week we have focused on Science for Classes VI, IV, III and I.  You can read below what they have been learning and view the lovely pictures.  Spotlight on Science for Classes II and V will feature after half term.

Class VI:
Science Club started last week for Class VI. Static electricity was our first topic.

Class IV:
Class IV have been studying sound, how it is made and how it travels. A large variety of instruments have been played to work out how to change volume and pitch.

Class III:
In lessons Class III were looking at Forces - so far we have had lots of fun flying kites, playing with parachutes and making windmills all whilst investigating wind force. Pupils have also designed their own 'Super Hero Cape' to help them fly, applying the knowledge they gained from their investigations on the size and shape of the blade and weights of materials, for how wind force is used most effectively. Creativity, Mastery and Practice Junior Da Vinci's have been earned, great work Year 3.

Class I:
The children have been exploring their five senses. Last week we investigated our sense of taste! We had to judge our likes and dislikes from six different foods. We then had to rank them on a scale of sweet to sour. Can you tell from our faces what we were tasting?!

Year 5 And 6 Games Lesson - Creativity Was Not Washed Away By The Rain

Rain did not dampen spirits in Year 5 and 6 Games lesson last week when students where put through their paces in a fitness circuit.

Students learnt how to carry out interval and continuous training and then had a chance to create their own sports specific circuit sessions, justifying how the exercises they had chosen would help improve their fitness for that sport.

All pupils put in fantastic effort and there were lots of Creativity Junior Da Vinci's given out too for the adaptation of some exercises to make them sports specific.  Can you guess the sport they were training for from the pictures?

Netball Coach Visits Crescent School

Year 3 and 4 girls were put through their paces on Tuesday lunch time when Carol Lewington, Level 2 netball coach of Rugby High 5 Netball Club (part of the LMR Ladies club) came in to run our session.

Carol focused on defensive drills and tactics looking at their positioning and peripheral vision.  Carol was very impressed by the attitudes and ability of the girls and would welcome any of our girls to join her session on a Monday night at Harris School Sports Centre 6.00-7.00pm.  All girls in Classes III, IV, V and VI have been involved in netball within their games sessions and this would be a fantastic arena for them to continue their love of netball outside of school.

There is also an exciting opportunities for students to sign up and get involved with the Wasps Netball team with their Masterclasses which are running over February half term, please see the flyer below for more information.

We are also getting very excited about our up and coming trip to go and support the Wasps Netball team in the Vitality League in their home fixture against the Celtic Dragons on Sunday 18 March. If you have not filled in and returned your consent slip and would like to go then please make sure this is with Mrs McCollin by Tuesday 6 February. Additional copy of letter below.

Netball Report - Years 5 And 6 Fast And Furious Netball

Crescent U11 'A' netball team travelled away to St Marie's for a netball fixture on Wednesday 31 January.

The girls were able to put in to practice their knowledge of the rules with fast back line and side line plays and quick breaks from penalty passes.  Girls showed strong spirits and great team work, communicating fantastically on court and starting to read how and where each other would move. This resulted in a 3-0 victory with goals scored by Robyn Shaw and Amelie Edge.

Coaches player of the game went to the Captain Clara Woolf.

Well played everyone.

Hockey Match Report - U9 'A' And 'B' v Bilton Grange and Stamford (a)

The progress of the under 9 boys has been impressive over the year so far.  On the back of their tournament win, the 'A' team stroked the ball around with confidence and, at times, it was unbelievable.  They struggled to break down a dogged Bilton Grange defence but Isaac Nelson swept in when he showed good movement in the D.

Crescent then conceded a rare goal but the fact that they were trying but failed a complex switch around the back meant that everyone applauded the idea.  Archie Dowling, as he has done, popped up in the right place at the right time to give Crescent the win. Again, Crescent had to break down the tight defence of Stamford but, again, did so with creativity and they deservedly won the mini tournament.

The 'B' team were just as impressive with James Wright showing his usual energy and resulted in a goal despite him being in defence!  A lot of the boys who had not played much hockey before are now showing super skills for their age.

Crescent overcame Bilton Grange. Against Stamford, they went down 2-0 quickly in the match. They did not recover from that but played much better in the second half.

Head of PE and Games

Hockey Match Report - U11 A And B v Bilton Grange (a)

The under 11s played all four of Bilton Grange’s teams.  The 'A' team played Bilton Grange’s 'B' team first and, although the hosts showed impressive skills, the power of Crescent was too much.   Matthew Browne’s goal was the pick with a rocket from a tight angle.

Against the 'A' team, Crescent were certainly competitive but struggled to hold onto the ball and were a little unstable defensively.

They went 2-0 down quickly but pulled it back with more assertive play to 2-2.  Bilton Grange then got a run of goals to win it 5-2.

Crescent’s 'B' team drew 2-2 with the Bilton Grange 'D' team and Vignesh Sadasivan got his first goal for the school.  Against the Bilton Grange 'C' team, they came off second best.

Naming A Puppy

The children seem very engaged in the naming of the puppy and there have already been a huge amount of entries into the box.

Children have until Friday 9 February to fill in a slip with their name, class and to choose a suitable name for our puppy.

It needs to be a name that is not too close to a command (e.g. Faye would not be suitable as it's too close to stay), preferably be two syllables long and a universal name if possible so it can be either a boy or girls dog name.

The slips and box to enter will be on the FoC table along with stickers for every entry submitted.

The top 3 names will be chosen to submit with our entry and update the children on the names chosen.

Movie Night - Beethoven

Friday 9 February 2018 - 5.00pm to 6.30pm

We will be holding our first Movie Night of 2018 in aid of our "Name a Puppy" charity.  All the proceeds from this evening will go towards this and hopefully we will reach and exceed our total of £1500 required.

We have opted for a doggy-themed movie and have chosen to show Beethoven.  This will be on Friday 9 February in the school hall from 5.00pm and should finish at 6.30pm. Please drop children off via the front entrance and pick them up via the usual side entrance.

It's only £5 per child and £3 for Reception children as they need to be accompanied by an adult and this includes the movie plus snacks and a drink.

Please put your child(s) name down on the list on the FoC noticeboard and you can either pay on the night or put £5 in an envelope marked "Movie Night" with your child's name on it into the green FoC box.

If you would like your child to go into after-school until the movie night starts please put their name down on the after-school sheet and tick for your child to receive tea and we'll make sure that all children receive their tea before the movie starts.
