Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

The last weeks and days before Christmas are some of the busiest in the school calendar.  As you know, the snowbomb that hit the region on Sunday meant we had to close the school on Monday. That in itself might sound relatively straightforward but for us here it has meant rearranging different events and timings to squeeze in all of the rehearsals, performances, Christmas lunches, theatre trips, festive assemblies that we had planned.

Of course, for you as families the closure also meant your plans and arrangements needed last minute changes and I appreciate this is not always easy to do.  The decision making process is never particularly easy as well with competing demands, although the overriding consideration is of course safety.  Thankfully, we are now back to normal and personally I would prefer no more snow days for another 5 (10?) years or so!

Just quickly looking back to last Friday I would like to say how impressed I was with the school Christmas bazaar.  Lots of hard work went into making this evening go so well and for all the fun the children had but the impact on teaching and learning in the school was minimal.  For me, that is what is known as a win-win!  Enormous thanks are due to the FoC team for this and I have heard that we raised lots of money and I am sure you will be hearing more of that from the committee in the FoC section of this newlsetter.

I am sure the children will all have their highlights for the last week but for me it has to be watching the two nativity performances to parents on Wednesday and Friday.  Our Estates team made the hall look very atmospheric with the clever lighting arrangements and our staff did a great a job preparing the children for their parts.  In the end though it was the children who really shone through with their enthusiasm and confidence and it was great to feel the buzz of excitement and appreciation from all of the parents and families who attended.

This will be our last full Courier of the term, although we will be putting a shortened version out next week with some of the last minute news and awards that came too late for today's edition.  In the meantime I wish you all lots of happy Christmas shopping (I have still got so much to do I am starting to quietly panic) and very best wishes for the holiday season that is now not too far away.

Class VI Venture To See The Jungle Book

Class VI went to see The Jungle Book live at Royal and Derngate Theatre, Northampton last Friday. A big thank you goes to Class VI pupil Matthew Browne who has very kindly provided a review for this week's Courier:

"The play started with a thrill, an exuberant jump, a little scene of a little cabin song.

After that the young child left the home into the forest the songs came loud and clear from all of the singers and the clever idea of using crutches as the front two legs for the wolves.

All the music was great from the singers to the musicians playing in the background (some of them, which is amazing, also were the actors performing at the same time.)

The set could turn giving a literal 360 degree view of the set and the actors.  One thing that was so good was the originality of it with no original songs.

All of the characters were fantastic, Baloo especially who gave a jolly feel to the play which made it even better, so that is why it was such an amazing performance."

Under 10 and U11 Girls' Hockey Battle Bravely Against Bilton Grange

Our U10 and U11 hockey teams travelled to Bilton Grange on Wednesday 6 December.

It was exciting end-to-end hockey played on both pitches, with the girls growing in confidence as the game went on.  The U11s worked extremely hard, with defensive players coming out early for tackles and midfield players reading the game well to make some impressive interceptions and take advantage with fast breaks.  Unfortunately, despite the fantastic crosses in to the D, these were not converted and the girls lost a well-fought match.

Final Score: 0-4
U11 Player of the Game – Olivia Sarkies

On the U10 pitch, our players showed great teamwork with some great saves from Cara Ridd and not to mention our strong defence.  The midfield players were distributing the ball well but again, unfortunately, could not convert the chances into goals.

Final Score: 0-3
U10 Player of the Game – Lucy Hardy

Well done to all Year 5 and 6 girls.

U9 A and B Boys’ Hockey v Solihull (H)

The Under 9 boys have shown exciting skills and some fantastic improvement over the term.  They suspected that Solihull would provide a stern test and so it proved.

The 'A' team struggled to get their passing going but did show some high level individual skills.  They also tried to play at a quick pace so that they got into good habits, Matthew Thomas did this well. Marco Rodriguez Hernandez tried to get Crescent going by spreading passes but the final ball let the hosts down.

Good defending kept Solihull at bay but they were dominating the play.  Eventually, Crescent won a short corner and taker Matthew Thomas scored after it was returned to him.  The pressure from the visitors told though, and, despite debutant goalkeeper Josh Gorbutt’s best efforts, they scored three good goals. A 3-1 loss but the potential is promising.

The 'B' team showed their improvement in skills as they played some very impressive hockey.  Connor Kennedy was low in the tackle and the hosts dominated the early stages.  Euan Nelson tried to spread the play and James Wright showed his usual energy.  Tom Ferguson scored but Solihull cancelled out the goal and it finished 1-1.

Well done to both teams.

Some Of The Lovely Things The Children Have Been Learning This Half Term!

This half term we've been busy learning about 2D shapes.  We have practised recognising and naming them and talked about their features. We used shapes to create Super Shape pictures.

We have been learning all about ‘light and dark’ and finding out about different sources of light. We have used some Funnybones stories to inspire our learning.

We have also been learning about the Christmas story as we prepared for A Miracle in Town, our Nativity.

How You Can Help Your Child At Home

  • Practise writing first and last names in cursive letters.
  • Visit the library. Share lots of stories encouraging the children to read words they recognise and try sounding out words they don’t know.
  • Write thank you letters for Christmas presents.
  • Go on a "number hunt" around the house. See if the children can say the numbers they see.

Reception Class Reminders

Please remember to sign your child’s reading record each evening so we know they have read.

Don’t forget to let us know if someone else is collecting your child at the end of the day.

Please make sure all uniform is named.

Fortnightly Newsletter

From next term, we will be providing parents with a fortnightly 'Reception Roundup'. It will let you know what we have been learning about, where our learning is taking us next, and suggestions for helping at home.

This will be a great way to keep you informed about what we are doing in class and will feature in this Reception Roundup section of the Courier.
