Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

I hope you are all well and your children have enjoyed another week of working from home.

I know from our recent home survey that many of them are coping very well, but at the same time are missing their friends and are keen to come back as soon as they can. I can assure you that we feel 100% the same as them. We all hope that the return to school can happen as soon as it is safe but have to recognise this will take time.

We have at least enjoyed a little winter sun towards the end of this week to help raise our spirits.

Seeing the children’s work on Seesaw is always a source of joy and to see the sheer range of work and activities going on is truly inspiring.

I am concentrating in my message today on the parental survey we sent round at the beginning of the week regarding the current home learning provision.

Please read the separate article in this section to find out more.

In the meantime, I do hope you all have a relaxing weekend.

With best wishes from everyone here at Crescent School.

Home Learning Survey Feedback

The first thing to note was the very high response rate of 85%, which in itself is very pleasing. We genuinely value the feedback that you give us and the more responses we get, the better the reliability of the results. The questions were broken down into key areas, including pupil engagement, emotional wellbeing, the balance between live lessons and Seesaw as well as the overall workload.

Many of you wrote additional comments which were most helpful. Whilst we won't be able to make individual responses to all of these, please do be assured that they have been read and the messages taken on board.

Independence and engagement

The first question we asked was regarding engagement with learning. Responses indicated that 97% of children are engaging somewhere in the realm of ‘quite well’ to ‘very well’, which is really encouraging. We will use the results and individual comments to communicate directly with those children who did express difficulties in this area.

The responses to the question regarding independence were understandably mixed. We are dealing with primary school age children and the ability to focus independently, as well as access the technology, is of course going to vary for individuals and to some extent also according to their age. The information that we have gathered from your responses will be really helpful for teachers with their planning, knowing that little bit more about the experience of the children at home.

Wellbeing

Again, it was really pleasing to hear that 97% of children are coping either generally well or very well with the emotional demands that lockdown imposes. This is tremendously reassuring. Using the information provided, form teachers and the pastoral team will be able to provide additional support where it is needed.

Teams and Seesaw

This question of the balance of Teams lessons and Seesaw lessons provided some interesting responses. By far the largest proportion of parents (64%) feel that the current balance is the right one for their child. However, we recognise that a significant minority (24%), would like to see more lessons with a Teams element to them. To illustrate the point about the divergence of opinion, 9% of respondents feel there are too many live lessons.

Having taken on the lessons from the first lockdown, my own feeling is that we must strike an age-appropriate balance. Children of primary school age do not benefit from five straight hours of sitting in front of a computer in Teams lessons. It is not healthy for them, it does not reflect a primary age classroom and it is not effective in achieving progression either. Another aspect of live lessons is that they can create problems for families to organise at home and a number of families made this very valid point. This does mean that the quality of the online lessons needs to be of the highest possible standard, as I believe our Seesaw lessons are.

However, I do feel there is a very important role for live lessons to play and we intend to steadily increase the number of live lessons, particularly for children in Key Stage 2 and particularly in the area of pastoral care. This will not enormously upset the current balance but will add additional opportunities for social interaction and enable teachers to keep an eye on all children and ensure that the engagement in the learning is maximised.

Workload

The overwhelming response (85%) to this question was that the current workload for children is about right. Of the parents who felt it wasn't, there was a more or less even split between those who would prefer more (8%) and those who would prefer less (5%).

Overall experience

No respondents felt they were not happy with the provision that we were putting in place, which was very pleasing. 93% described their overall experience as being very good or excellent. This was backed up by very many delightful and very welcome comments from parents, who praised the hard work of the staff and the quality of the lessons that have been provided. One thing I was especially pleased to note was the many positive comments on the quality of the Seesaw lessons. We learned a great deal about what works and what doesn't work during the first lockdown and it is pleasing to note that this has been recognised by parents.

The overriding message was that parents were very happy with what the school is providing. That is tremendously reassuring but we will not take it as a signal to relax or take things for granted. We will continue to review the results over the next week in more detail and I will work with the staff here to ensure that the appropriate action is taken, as we continue to refine and hone home learning for the benefit of all.

Many thanks to everyone who took part.

Good Luck To Year 6 Children

Many of our Year 6 have already sat either the 11+ or other independent school examinations and now the majority are off (virtually) to Princethorpe College tomorrow. Having talked to them, I know they feel prepared and ready to do their best in the Foundation's senior school entrance examination. We wish them good luck, we are all very proud of our pupils' hard work and determination to do their best and of how they have supported each other as they have worked their way through the entrance examination season, made especially unique by doing exams online.

We have our fingers crossed for you all!

Accelerated Reading Book Finder

We are so lucky that we can support reading whilst the children are learning from home. Each week the staff in Years 3-6 will monitor who is reading, so we can praise and encourage the children in their reading journey. If you need to check if a book is on the accelerated reading system then please use this link, it will also let you search for books at a certain book level.

We very much hope it will be able to take place then.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing Message

Each week I will be sharing chosen resources and activities to support emotional wellbeing during this time of lockdown and home learning. As a source, I will be choosing my favourite finds from the following website:

https://www.elsa-support.co.uk/

ELSA stands for Emotional Literacy Support Assistant, but alongside training opportunities for school staff, they also provide resources for families to download to help with managing feelings, emotions and behaviours. As well as their website, you can follow them on social media and subscribe to new resources being created each week.

This week I am sharing the AFFIRMATION FORTUNE TELLER!  We all love making fortune tellers – even from as young as Year 1! They can be a great resource for learning across the curriculum. This fortune teller is for affirmations. So the child picks one of the characteristics and spells it out by moving the fortune teller. They then pick a number and move the fortune teller that number of times and then they pick another number and look to see what the affirmation says.

We all need to hear positive comments to boost our general wellbeing and self belief. Follow the link here if you would like to download and make one for yourselves.

Stay safe and be kind to yourselves and others.

Acts Of Kindness

The Courier often, rightly, reflects excellent learning that has taken place during the week but as we proceed through the upcoming weeks of lockdown, we'd love to dedicate a section to small acts of kindness which Crescent children and families have committed to, to simply and safely enhance the lives of someone else.

Please do send examples/pictures to alanwebb@crescentschool.co.uk for inclusion next week and onwards.

With all best wishes.

Grace's Act Of Kindness

We were impressed to hear that Year 3 pupil Grace and her Mum have been writing letters and postcards for an initiative called Postcards Of Kindness.

The project involves writing to residents of care homes to combat loneliness and isolation. The postcards help remind the residents that there is always someone thinking of them.

Grace’s Mum said, “We would truly love for other school families to be involved. The residents love to receive letters, postcards or drawings and care homes from all over the country are involved. You are free to write to any that have chosen to be included. The idea is to combat loneliness and isolation and to remind the residents that people care about their wellbeing - even if they have never met them.”

If you would like to find out more about the initiative then follow the link here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PostcardsOfKindness

Assistant Head, Alan Webb, commented, “What a wonderful project, and such a kind and thoughtful thing for Grace to do.”

Seesaw Home Learning Tips For Families

Although we have all been using Seesaw for what seems like forever now, I'm sure that every now and again it still throws up something that stumps us! In that light I just wanted to take the opportunity to steer you towards a couple of helpful guides for navigating Seesaw as a family member/home schooling wizard. Seesaw itself offers plenty of help in that respect, all of which can be found from clicking on the relevant links from this page

Interhouse Weekly Challenge - Week 2

The Red Team take first place again in this week's inter-house challenge, with Yellow house in 2nd and Blue in 3rd.

This week's challenges are

For an extra bonus point why not get other members of your family involved.

I will add my entry in to this week's competition so you can see if you can beat me.

Reception French

Now that they can name the characters in La chasse à l’ours, the children watched Madame Tatton read the first few pages in the book, they stopped at the long wavy grass, in French we say 'une prairie'. The children then made their own 'prairie' and used their puppets form the previous week to re-enact the page from Michael Rosen’s book.

Class 1S St Kevin

Class 1S have continued to think about the story of St Kevin, following Mr Thackway’s assembly last week. We listened to the story of him again and how he chose to do the right thing so that the black bird could continue building her nest and hatching her babies.

Their task this week was to recreate the picture of St Kevin using toys, Lego, playdough, cardboard tubes, figures or even themselves. The children thought about the small narrow den and made space for Kevin's arms to poke through and the bird and it's nest in one hand.

Mr Thackway and I really enjoyed seeing what was created!

Class 6W Are Bakers

One of the many things that we talk about over our lunch together in Class 6W is baking, many of us are keen bakers, the class even bought me a great apron for Christmas.

Many of us find baking is a great way to relax and practise mindfulness, so I suggested that the class could share something they cooked independently this week if they wished.

I have been so very impressed with the variety and quality of their cooking, there have been cakes (even one with a model of me on!), chicken dishes, pasta dishes, breakfasts and many more.

These are great life skills for the children, I know I always loved cooking with my children and they are great at cooking for themselves, now they are grown up.
