2021 Leavers Return For Past Pupil Matches

Crescent School gave a warm welcome to the Leavers of 2021 when they returned to their old primary school to take part in the annual Past Pupil Sports Matches on Thursday 31 March. Many have stayed within the Foundation, and now attend Princethorpe College, but plenty have moved on to other schools.

It was lovely to see all their familiar faces and to welcome them and their parents back into school. It was even better to catch up with their news while enjoying tea and cakes. High on the agenda was a tour of the new Horton Centre, a big change to the school since they left last year. Then it was off to the field and courts respectively, ready to face Crescent’s teams.

The matches were great fun to watch, full of great sporting spirit, and fast paced with plenty of shots at goal. Midway through the netball teams swapped over to ensure everyone had a chance to play. Sport is such a huge part of life here at Crescent, and it was wonderful to see the camaraderie of all the pupils.

This year the results in the Football were 6-3 to Crescent Year 6, with Aryan Satsangi scoring a hat-trick, and in the Netball the Year 7s resoundingly came out on top beating the Year 6s 17-3. What matters most though, is that great fun was had by all.

We always like hearing from past pupils and encourage everyone within the Crescent community to stay in touch with the school. The Foundation has an active alumni community, past parents are welcome to join, as are past pupils once they have finished their secondary education. You can find out more here: https://connect.princethorpe.co.uk/

There is also the Old Crescentians facebook group (again for over 18s) https://www.facebook.com/groups/oldcrescentians/

Junior Schools Cross Country Challenge

This week, Crescent School’s Year 5 and Year 6 pupils took part in a Junior Schools Cross Country Challenge held at Crackley Hall School. They were joined by pupils from Priors Field Primary School and Balsall Common Primary School.

It was a freezing cold and wet day, and the children were all keen to compete and to get warm running the winding course around the school field. They set off with plenty of energy and enthusiasm and demonstrated great determination and perseverance to complete the race.

The Year 5 girls race was the first to get going and it was a closely matched affair. Grace ran well to finish in 3rd place followed over the line by Ellie in 5th. Lara and Bella both finished in the top 10 with Chloe, Poppy and Annalise all running good races.

The Year 5 boys were next, with pupils giving their all and showing a fabulous work ethic and team spirit. Strong competition from Balsall Common and Priors Field meant that Crescent’s first finisher was Sam in 5th place, Charlie and Fin also ran well.

The Year 6 girls showed grit, determination, and maturity. Fantastic running from Evie and Katherine saw them stick with the leaders to come home in 4th and 5th places respectively. Stephanie finished in 10th with Eva 11th and Sophia and Liana following on.

The final race was the Year 6 boys and Crescent’s runners faced a strong Crackley team. They set a fast pace but Kai, Caspar, Faris and Aryan stayed strong and all ran solid races.

The individual races were followed by relays, with teams of four competitors running a shorter course. Crescent’s Year 6 girls, Harriet, Sophie, Katherine and Evie, ran brilliantly to claim a well-deserved 1st place.

There were fantastic performances by all of Crescent's pupils, of which we are very proud, not only whilst running but also for their support of one another cheering and encouraging all the runners along. Well done to all and we hope you have warmed up now!

Curriculum Workshops Share Crescent School’s Strategies For Successful Learning

Crescent School’s Curriculum Workshops have explored how a Growth Mindset can help pupils be successful in their learning. Facilitated by staff over the last two weeks, pupils and parents have enjoyed a range of age-appropriate activities exploring different approaches and strategies for problem solving.

Year 1 parents saw how oral storytelling helps embed speaking and learning objectives in English. Using a range of crafting materials, the children created frames for a favourite story in a collaborative task with their parent. They then uploaded their work to Seesaw, along with their spoken retelling through photos and videos. Parents enjoyed the challenge set by Mrs Symons and Mrs Stapleton, and followed up the activities with great feedback and questions on how we all need to be positive role models in the vocabulary we use when approaching challenging tasks at home, work or school.

The children in Year 2 loved sharing an in school session with their parents and Mr Webb and Mrs McCollin. After agreeing what fixed and growth mindsets look like, they took on a challenge to build a high tower from marshmallow and spaghetti. Despite encountering difficulties and problems, children and parents were able to reset, to think differently, try alternative approaches and encourage one another to remain positive.

Year 3 were pleased to be able to welcome their parents into school for a taster of life in the classroom. Their workshop had a cross-curricular focus on English, ICT and Growth Mindset, led by Mr Adkins and Mrs Yates, with the pupils working with their parents to devise and plan an imaginative and unique story using a story mountain framework. The teams then used the amazing Puppet Pals app on the iPads to turn their story plan into a short drama piece, some involving pirates, monsters, aliens… and even Mahatma Ghandi being eaten by a dragon! It was a great opportunity to share their learning strategies first hand with their adults.

Mrs Monteith and Mrs Johnson led a workshop with Year 4 and their parents on 'Growth Mindset' and the difference it can make to their learning and their lives. They began by standing in a circle creating 'pathways' with a ball of wool to show how the connections in a brain works; then they took part in 'Brain Art' where the children and parents drew dots and pathways to create unique designs and shared them with each other. Lastly, they took part in a challenge to build a free-standing tower made from index cards and 10 sticky dots. It was a hotly contested battle.

A full hall of Year 5 and 6 parents and children were encouraged to look for connection through collaboration through closed and open-ended activities beginning with a mathematical, logical slant from Ms Forth. Parents were introduced to the vocabulary used in school to encourage a growth mindset and pupils and parents then encouraged to evaluate numbers, find a rule that they followed and then create rules with a set of random objects that showed logic. Children produced patterns of height, weight, translucency and order of rotation to name a few. Mrs Webb then continued sharing how staff provide opportunities to use higher order skills such as analysis, evaluation and creativity to consider who you would plant ideas into the mind of and what would those ideas be. Their suggestions for planting ideas to tackle climate change and bring about peace into the minds of world leaders were extremely humbling to hear. Collaboration and discussion were strongly encouraged as such a valuable learning tool throughout the session.

Head of Curriculum, Deputy Head, Bryony Forth, said, “We hope the Curriculum Workshops have helped parents understand the techniques and strategies that we use in school today. We work hard to create a positive, ‘can do’ learning environment in school to enable pupils to achieve. Developing skills in resilience and perseverance and an ability to thrive on challenges are essential. A huge thank you to all of the parents who came in to join us!”

Au Revoir To Madame Rochard

Today in our assembly we said our farewells and au revoirs to Madame Rochard, who has stood in and taught French to the children over the last term.  I know that the children have really enjoyed her lessons and getting to know her hand puppet assistant, Nuu-Nuu.  Madame always made the lessons interesting and entertaining with lots of songs and interaction, helping the children to learn and make progress.

We wish her every success in her future endeavours.

Year 5 Easter Read

Year 5 have received a class reader to enjoy over the Easter holidays, Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo.  If they have already read this book then please encourage them to read another book by the same author.

I am happy for pupils to share the book with you, listen to it or read it themselves. They will all need to have completed reading their book by the start of the Trinity term so that we can work from it together.

Assistant Head

Welcome To Mrs Day

As we say goodbye to Madame Rochard, we also welcome our new, and permanent, modern foreign languages teacher Mrs Lucy Day. Lucy comes to us with a wealth of experience teaching foreign languages, most recently at Bilton School and before that at Princethorpe College. Lucy was our successful candidate following a rigorous recruitment process back in November but has been unable to start here due to her commitments at Bilton.

We all look forward to welcoming Lucy from the beginning of next term when she will be delivering lessons in French and Spanish to all of the children in the school, from Reception through to Year 6.

Absence Requests For Holiday During Term Time Reminder

Parents are discouraged from taking pupils out of school during term-time because of the impact it has on their learning. Should this be unavoidable, permission should always be sought in advance from myself. I am able to pre-authorise absences on certain grounds such as religious observances and special family occasions.

Please ensure you submit any absence requests in good time, through either My School Portal or via the office email admin@crescentschool.co.uk.
