Class 1LS Explore 'Oy' Sounds

This week 1LS have been learning and using the -oy sound in their phonics learning. They have been reading a story about Kit and Sam going on a royal visit to Buckingham Palace. The children worked hard to find -oy words in sentences, and then matched the correct sentences to the pictures to tell the story. They were great at it!

Class 2W are History Detectives

Class 2W have started the year by learning about the heroine, Grace Darling, who bravely rescued a group of shipwrecked people off the north-east coast, near Bamburgh. They have been looking at different pictures, portraits, and images of Grace during the rescue, and asking questions.

  • Was her father with her or was she alone?
  • Did she have one oar or two?
  • Did her father row the boat, or did she?

The children enjoyed re-creating the possibilities and miming the rescue. They are learning how historians must look at different sources of evidence to piece together the events of the past.

We will continue our Grace Darling topic by looking at how word spread of her heroic act, and what it meant to have national fame in 1838.

Well done, 2W!

Class 4M Marvellous Maths

Class 4M have worked hard this week on their numbers, exploring 4-digit numbers and practising adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers mentally. They finished off the week with a session in our ICT room, doing the 'Smack the Shack' game on Abacus to consolidate their learning.

The Abacus platform is fantastic for practising their skills, and as the pictures show, the children really enjoy using it.

Well done, 4M!

Class 6W History

We are studying the Ancient Greeks this term. We asked the question - how can we know so much about the past? By looking at a Myth we realised how much could remain as a clue about the past.  We then looked around the room at individual clues to see if we could work out which were the most reliable.

Class 6W Blue House Playleader Training

Class 6W Blue House pupils had a great day last Friday learning about the art of leadership. Pupils looked at a number of inspirational leaders, analysed the key attributes that strong leaders have and then thought deeply about the characteristics they possess and those they may need to develop further.

We worked on communication skills, both verbal and non verbal, to understand the importance of clear and concise instructions and learned how important it is to plan ahead and be prepared, and to have a Plan B.  Pupils then had a go at leading their peers through a variety of different warm-up activities and fun games before creating their own exercises to explain and lead.

I was extremely impressed with the wonderful ideas the pupils had on how to develop play time and lunchtimes to make them fun on the playground.  St Andrews, it was a pleasure to spend the day with you.
