Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

Lots of parents have been into school this week for parent consultations, which have gone really well, with more to come next week. Thanks to staff and parents for your constructive approach to these meetings and which I hope provide reassurance and confidence for you as parents about your child and their life in school.

I have been away for the second part of the week at the annual head teachers’ conference in Edinburgh. This is always a great opportunity to keep up to date with new ideas and initiatives across the education sector and hopefully bring back plenty of positive initiatives for us to focus on at school. The theme this year has been ‘enlightened education’ and I have enjoyed sessions on a wide range of subjects including diversity and inclusivity, the rights of the child and a nice one about the benefits of a growth mindset from Marc Randolph, the founder of the Netflix organisation. His experience and insight fitted in so well with the work we have done on this here at Crescent.

As always we look forward to another busy and productive week in school next week with the prospect of half term holidays now not too far away. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy a restful weekend with your families.

Joe Thackway
Headmaster

Olive's Street Food Was A Tasty Treat

We were all very excited about Olive Catering’s ‘Street Kerb’ tasting event today and the children couldn’t wait either. The Latin American menu had our mouths watering and it certainly lived up to our expectations.

Parents had the chance to enjoy the flavours at Open Corridors too! When did school dinners get so exciting?

Many thanks to Olive Catering for organising the Street Food taster today - we can't wait to see what you come up with next.

2022 Leavers Return For Past Pupil Sports Matches

Crescent School gave a fantastic warm welcome to the Leavers of 2022, on Wednesday 5 October, when they returned to their old primary school to take part in the annual Past Pupil Sports Matches.

It was lovely to see all their familiar faces and to welcome the new Year 7s and their parents back into school.  After a quick catch up, coffee and cake, Assistant Head and Year 6 teacher, Mrs Webb, took the pupils and their parents on a tour. We had plenty of great feedback with pupils and parents commenting, 'It is just like coming home', 'It is lovely and familiar' and 'The children have been so excited to return, it is all they have been talking about'. What was really lovely was that when the Year 7s visited their old classroom, they found their desks and sat in them and as if they had never gone.

Then the boys and girls headed out onto the field and courts, ready to face Crescent’s teams. The matches were great fun to watch, fast paced with plenty of shots at goal.  Midway through the teams swapped over to ensure everyone had a chance to play. Sport is such a huge part of life here at Crescent, and it was wonderful to see the camaraderie of all the pupils.

This year the results in the Football were 6-1 to past pupils and in the Netball the Year 7s also came out on top beating the Crescent team 9-3. Both were fantastic matches played with great spirit. Thank you to everyone for coming along.

We always like hearing from past pupils and encourage everyone within the Crescent community to stay in touch with the school. The Foundation has an active alumni community, past parents are welcome to join, as are past pupils once they have finished their secondary education. You can find out more here:

There is also the Old Crescentians facebook group (again for over 18s)

Xmas4schools Christmas Cards - Reminder

We are purchasing our fundraising Christmas cards from Xmas4schools. Please look out for your child bringing home an order card that has the ordering details on one side and the actual space where the design must be on the other.

Please fill in details and keep to the class name as RP, 1Q, 1S, 2E, 2W, 3S, 4C, 5F or 6W. Also, there is a price guide as to what products you will be able to buy when the design is complete.

The design guidelines are:

  • Do not go too near the edge as the printer will cut it off- you must be 1cm away all around.
  • Do use felt tip, ink, pencil crayons, gel pens - brighter the better- pale does not show up.
  • Do use collage if you want - but well stuck down.
  • Do use glitter glue if you want.
  • Do not use sprinkle glitter- it falls off!
  • Do not use large areas of metallic finishes - it will not look shiny.
  • Do cover up as much of the white space as you can.
  • Do make any text big as the process will reduce the size of the design.

The design card with details, must be returned as soon as possible. The deadline is Thursday 13 October 2022. We cannot accept or send any late orders.

FoC will receive a donation for every product ordered, so do get designing! Please note that this is not the Crescent School Christmas card competition, but items just for yourselves.

Please click on the photos in the gallery which provide information.

Digital Citizenship

Making Mobile Phones Safer For Children

There is no escaping the importance of mobile ‘smart’ phones in today’s society… whether it be for messaging, video and regular calling, taking photos and videos, banking, gaming, or ordering yourself a pizza! It would probably also not surprise you to know that most children in the UK regularly have access to a smartphone, either a parents’ or siblings' device, or more commonly their own. A survey last year even found that a massive 53% of children aged 7 have their own mobile, jumping sharply to 90% by the age of 11.

Now with most technology, these devices are not only a lot of fun, they can be extremely helpful, particularly in terms of maintaining near constant contact with your loved ones and being able to track their location at the touch of a button. They do however need to be carefully set up to ensure maximum protection for the younger user. This includes setting up content restrictions, web and search filters and carefully monitoring and limiting what apps can be downloaded.

The website Internet Matters really is the most amazing and useful place on the internet to find advice about setting parental controls. Just click on the link then scroll down to select from a range of devices, broadband providers, search engines and apps, all of which guide you to set up your online world to be the safest place possible.

I also have attached two very handy guides, one for iPhones and the other for Android devices which are a great place to start, but if you have any further questions on how to make phones as safe they can possibly be, including using tracking apps like Life360, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Hockey Round Up

U11A Girls v Bilton Grange
Fantastic form from all of the players at Wednesday's match against Bilton Grange, all girls applied learning from last week's lesson and followed advice given. Tackles were low and hard, balls were distributed wide, space was utilised well driving the ball into the channels and staying strong on the ball. An absolutely wonderful match to watch, fast and furious end to end play with so much determination and grit. The game could have gone either way with Crescent unfortunately coming off 2-1 down, but truly a wonderful performance by the whole team, the best game of Crescent hockey I have watched.

Player of the game was awarded to Goal Keeper Ava.

Mrs McCollin

Girls Hockey U11B V Bilton Grange
Wednesday’s match was a massive improvement to previous games.  All of the girls tried their best and worked really hard.  In the first half Tegan dribbled the ball all the way in to our attacking D and passed the ball to Erin who scored.  There was some really good defence, solid tackles and pressing of the ball stopping the BG from scoring from Annlaise, Saira, Zahra and Libby and hard work in midfield from Poppy, Grace and Tegan.

In the 2nd half Ava made a great save kicking the ball out to Lara who made a fantastic attack dribbling the ball in to the D to score the 2nd goal, with assistance from Erin.

Player of the game was given to Grace M, however everyone played amazingly well.  Final score 2-0 Win.

Written by Lara and Annalise

U10 Girls v Bilton Grange
All the U10 girls were lucky enough to get the opportunity for another hockey fixture, this time at Bilton Grange. They came up against a well practiced and skilful side who took the lead after five minutes. The girls rallied hard and kept fighting taking on board tips for game play especially improving their use of the whole pitch. Despite a number of chances Crescent weren't able to beat the Bilton Grange goalie and a few more goals were scored against us. Emily was named player of the match by the opposition for her excellent, low tackles.

Well done all, it was a tough match,  but I was hugely impressed with the continued effort right to the final whistle and the girls all left the pitch smiling and happy that they had tried so hard.

U11’s Girls Midlands ISA Football Tournament

The U11 Crescent Girls side travelled over to Dixie Grammar last Friday for the Midlands ISA, and were simply fantastic from the first kick to the last, playing with confidence, determination and pride.

The girls began their campaign with a very hard-fought victory over Foundation rivals Crackley, a 2-1 win sealed with well taken goals from Roisin and Grace. The second game saw them come up against a very strong, physical Dixie team. Crescent were able to take a 2-0 lead in the first half with possibly the two goals of the tournament from Grace, with Annalise and Lara providing the support. Dixie were not going down without a fight on their home turf however, scoring 2 late goals to draw the game. Crescent really found their confidence and their shooting boots in the 3rd game with a resounding 10-0 victory over Ruckleigh, four more goals from Grace and an incredible double hat-trick from the unstoppable Roisin powering them through. Going into the final group game, Crescent knew that a win in the last group game would be enough for a spot in the final, and after scoring straight from kick-off against Highclare, this was never in doubt. Five goals from Grace, three from Roisin, two from Esme, two from Ava and a final from Lara ensured not only a 13-0 win, but a chance to lift the trophy against the unbeaten Edenhurst in the final!

Inspired by their excellent goal-scoring, Crescent were straight out of the blocks, pressing high up the pitch and not allowing their opposition to settle. This pressure immediately started to pay off, Roisin scoring twice to make it 2-0 at the half. The second half was much the same story, Grace scoring twice and Roisin scoring twice more to leave the final score 6-0 and Crescent Midlands ISA Champions!

Special mentions must go to all 10 players who played their parts perfectly as a team throughout. Ellie, Ava, Zara and Chloe strong and collected at the back, Annalise, Esme, Bella and Lara diligent and determined in midfield and finally Grace and Roisin deadly in front of goal, between them scoring an incredible 28 goals between them in just 5 games!
