Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

I expect you, like me, spent time on Monday watching the magnificent but sombre events marking the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. This will be a landmark moment in the children's lives as they look back on a number of historical events in very recent times. Our own memory wall for the Queen’s life has taken shape nicely in the corridor, with lots of beautiful comments and reflections shared by the children.

These events meant for a four-day school week which kicked off with a really interesting assembly from Mr Webb concerning our plans to refresh and renew the School Promise over the next term. All the children will be involved, brainstorming their thoughts about what makes a good friend, a good learner and a good citizen and sharing these ideas in form times and school council meetings. I very much look forward to the children’s input and this will be shared with all the parents fully as the term goes on.

There has been plenty of sport to enjoy over the last three weeks and we were able to say at the end of last week that all the children in the upper school had taken part in a competitive fixture representing the school. It is one of the beauties of a small school that sport is accessible to everybody and that is most certainly the case here. Win, lose or draw, there is so much to be learned and gained from collective endeavour, be it good manners, sportsmanship or camaraderie. With the School Promise in mind, sport has an enormous part to play in enriching the children’s education in the broadest sense.

I wish you all a peaceful weekend with your families.

Important Information

School Crossing Patrol Update

I know several parents have been asking about Chris our School Crossing Patrol, I have received the update below.

Whilst Chris isn't here please do take care crossing the road and remember you can park in Church Walk Car Park and walk up to school. Please see here for information.

Good Morning Claire,

Thank you for your email and for taking my call a few moments ago.

I’m afraid that Chris is still absent and we do not have a specific return date at this time.

We unfortunately do not have any relief patrols in Warwickshire for his site.

I’ve spoken with my colleagues in the Road Safety Education Team and they would be more than happy to offer the following video resource about safe crossing of roads. It is aimed at Year 3 but is appropriate for all year groups to alleviate concerns during Chris’ absence.

Safe Road Crossing

If you need anything else in the mean time do not hesitate to get in contact.

Warm Regards,

Crescent Caught On Camera

Crescent School pupils and staff showed their best sides off to good effect earlier this week when professional photographer Marcus Perkins travelled up from London to spend the day at school on a photo shoot for our Marketing Team.

Marcus' busy schedule saw him focus his lens on pupils from Reception to Year 6 taking part in a range of activities from music clubs and lessons, and Geography and French lessons, to the friendship benches and the new adventure trail.

Thanks to everyone for their patience and co-operation; children you were all stars! We look forward to seeing the fruits of Marcus' labours in the next week or so and to seeing the pictures featured on the school website and in our marketing materials.

Wellbeing Chit Chat Tuesdays

We have held this new Wellbeing drop-in opportunity, on Tuesday lunchtimes for the past two weeks and we have been thrilled at the number of children wanting to drop by. Some have come on their own or with friends, and have engaged in sharing their news, their thoughts or to find some quiet time to draw, colour or read. We look forward to welcoming more children as we work hard in managing numbers and capacity within the common room.

Class 1S Phonics

The children have settled really well into the new routines of Year 1, and they have also been enjoying using different ways to discover and remember our new phonic sounds. We are learning the alternative spellings to the phonemes we have learnt in Reception - and although a little confusing at times, we are having a lot of fun in the learning process!

Class 4C Geography

4C Geographers have combined their map reading skills with historical evidence analysis this week. They have searched OS maps for place names of settlements of all sizes to work out which people name them in which era. Children realised that many Celtic names have died out or been changed as they are so old, Anglo-Saxons are mainly in the south and Vikings in the north of England. Rugby is in the middle and is a Viking name. The -by means farmstead.

Digital Citizenship

E-Safety - Roblox

Depending on the age of your child and their online habits, you may already be very familiar with the game ‘Roblox’. For those of you who aren’t, it is an online gaming platform that offers the user the chance to create and play a whole range of different games, many of which are designed by other such users. It can be an incredibly fun game, a super introduction to designing computer games and also a nice way for children to dip their toes into the world of online gaming… but it does need some careful setting up and monitoring to keep it safe and secure!

Roblox is a game with a bit of a bad reputation for various reasons, although the makers have done a lot recently to try to put this right. The main problem is that a lot of it can involve chatting online to other players, which obviously instantly starts alarm bells ringing. It does however have some pretty decent privacy and parental controls settings that help to alleviate this fear. Despite being completely free to play it can also be a little pushy with additional online purchases and without the correct filters does have some questionable content in some of the games.

I would recommend firstly making sure that the age restrictions are set to below 12 years of age, as this automatically filters a lot of the chat. At first I would also recommend enabling Account Restrictions, as this stops all chat functions (or limits to friends only if you choose that option) and limits the in-games they can play to ones that have been carefully approved by the creators. You can then use a Parent-PIN to lock the account so your child can’t make any changes without permission. There are then a number of ways of checking exactly what they have been on by essentially looking at their history, which cannot be deleted. Sorry if that all sounds a little complicated, it does take a little while to get the settings the way you want them, but it is all explained best on their website here:

Roblox Settings

There is also a very handy concise guide attached just here. If you have any questions about Roblox, or any other E-Safety concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Hockey Round Up

Great opening matches against Crackley Hall:

U11A 2-0 loss
Great movement in the middle of the pitch, and in getting the ball in to the attacking circle but the team struggled to make any count. Fabulous defence from Zara and valiant effort from Ava in goal.

U11B 2-1 loss
Great play by all, getting fully involved, solid defence from Annalise and Great distribution of the ball by Grace M.

U10 - won 5-2
Three goals from Roisin Banks - who was rewarded for battling hard and never giving up. Great team performance with real improvement seen during the match. A great start to the season.

U9 won 6-0
A fabulous team performance with every team member working incredibly hard. They soon learnt that moving the ball in to space opened up opportunities to score and took full advantage. Highlights were Nora’s confident defence and tackling, Maya moving the ball into space and Roisin’s four goals. It was a real pleasure to watch them grow as a team.

U8 - 2-1 loss
Excellent development throughout the game with some fantastic passes and drives forward from Evelyn, Amber and Ellie. All of the girls got really stuck in for their first opportunity in Year 3 to represent their school, and what a great job they did.

Football Round Up

Crescent U11s 3 – 5  Crackley U11s

Crescent got their season underway against a very strong Crackley side, and despite the final result, played some truly amazing football. The home side took a very early lead due to a defensive mix-up, but Crescent rallied immediately, super link up play from Finlay and Grace setting Sam through on goal who finished coolly. From that point on the game was real end-to-end stuff, Crackley making it 2-1 before Sam again levelled from the penalty spot after some smart play from Bryson. A freak refereeing decision allowed Crackley to grab a third just before halftime, much to the travelling crowd’s anguish!

Crescent battled on after the break, Charlie pulling off some super saves in goal, and after hitting the woodwork a couple of times, Sam completed his hat-trick with a smart finish to level things up. Crackley however, benefitting from fresh legs once more pulled away, leaving the final score at 5-3.

Player of the Match justifiably went to Grace for her superb passing and attacking play, but could just as easily have gone to Charlie in goal, Yash and Harry for their solid defence, Lara for her ferocious tackling, or of course Sam for his excellent captaincy and accomplished finishing.

Crescent U10s B 0 – 1  Crackley U10s B

Crescent were very unlucky to finish runners up in a very close game to start their season. Sam O and Ollie both proved to be giants in defense, with strong, determined tackling cutting out the majority of Crackley’s attacks. The home side did however manage to grab what would prove be a decisive lead just for the half, despite an excellent initial save from James in goal. Crescent didn’t let their heads drop however, Edward F, Remi and Harry linking really well to create a number of chances on goal. Despite their unquestionable grit and tenacity, they just couldn’t find the breakthrough, the game finishing 1-0.
Player of the match went to Sam O for his fantastic energy and resolve.

Crescent U10As 4 – 3 Crackley U10As
A Crescent goal from Timi within the first minute prompted Crackley defence to jump into action and kick-started what turned out to be a very close game. Over the next twenty minutes, our boys made several attempts at goal, but Crackley’s goalie was on great form. A half-time chat saw the boys back on with the motivation to make the most of their opportunities to score. Timi was first to net the ball in the second half, followed by Alex G and Timi again. Several great saves were made by our goalies of the second half, Ed and Shiv, and the game ended with Crescent celebrating their 4-3 win.
Player of the match was Timi.

Crescent U9s A 2 – 2  Crackley U9s A
The Under 9s first game of the season ended in a well deserved draw between two very evenly matched sides. Crackley took the lead through a dipping long range strike, before sustained pressure saw Henry M volley in from a corner to level things. In the second half Crescent were able to take the lead for the first time through Zac’s swerving shot from the edge of the box. Akaal twice went close to putting the game to bed, but a defensive mix-up allowed Crackley to equalise with only seconds to go.
Joint players of the match were Zac and Henry, looking very strong in both attack and defense.

Crescent U9s B 0 - 0  Crackley U9s B
Although unable to come away with a win, the U9 Bs made a great start to their season, playing with fantastic enthusiasm, perseverance and teamwork. The midfield combined superbly throughout to put constant pressure on the Crackley goal, but despite having endless shots on target, could not find the breakthrough, in no small part due to the small goals they were playing with. The game finished 0-0, but with Crescent very much on top throughout.
Player of the match went to Max T.

Crescent U8s 5 - 0 Crackley U8s
Crescent U8s 8 - 0 Crackley U8s
The Crackley boys worked hard to defend against a strong Crescent offensive line, but excellent teamwork across the pitch saw Kian and Tomisin sinking 5 goals by the final whistle of the first game. Despite their enthusiasm and best efforts, Crackley weren’t able to break through Crescent defence to score a goal. In the second game, a reshuffle saw some of our defenders moving up front and Tomisin, Kian and Alfie scored 8 goals between them, bringing the final score of the second game to 8 – 0.
Player of the match Alfie.

Huge thanks to everyone for bringing in your donations.  The pile on the front lawn this morning was enormous! A great effort, and an excellent way to recycle unwanted clothing and textiles all while supporting the school.

150kgs were donated (50kg more than last time) which raised a fantastic £60 for FoC funds.
