Securing place value to 100 then extending above is a key element of maths understanding in Year 1. We have been counting up the days since we started way back in September, each day discussing the number of tens and the number of ones.
Reaching 100 where we open up a whole new place value column is a big achievement which required celebration in style. The children decorated biscuits and made 100 day hats in the morning.
In the afternoon the party began with educational pass the parcel (each layer may have contained a sweet but also contained a maths problem to solve). The prize at the end was 18 Freddo bars. The maths was simple – 18 chocolate bars divided by 18 children and the children showed their ever building teamwork skills by agreeing that sharing would be best. Maths continued looking at pairs and tally charts playing ‘ladders’ and speed was of the essence playing duck, duck, goose. Both noise and fun were high but party food at the end of the day was a brief moment of quiet reprise. Here’s to the next 100!
Class 1E children are examining the onset of Spring in their Science lessons. This week we investigated early blooming flowers, asking ourselves why they were out so early, and especially focusing on Bilton's lovely daffodils and crocuses. We looked closely at the range of colours and sizes.
Class 2W have been learning about the Amazon rain forest in geography and are now enjoying and working hard each week in art designing and making different animals. This week it was piranha from the Amazon river.
3S have enjoyed working collaboratively in designing and making their own tasty bread rolls with their own choice of flavours. From learning about the ingredients and equipment to use, to investigating the processes and method, they were very happy with what they produced!
5F has enjoyed improving their weighing skills in maths this week. With little input, they had to decide what intervals all the different weighing scales measured in and record weights of classroom objects in grams and kilograms.
5F have explored a variety of adapted versions of Macbeth, to enable them to enjoy the story, gain knowledge of language and ideas for stories. They were then given an open learning task to show their understanding of Macbeth. Some of their ideas were: a diary of the witches, modern adaptations, there was a version in scratch and a poster. Hopefully this will inspire them to enjoy Shakespeare further as they grow up.
Last week Classes 6Y and 6W spent their DT lessons researching, tasting, designing and making their own Cornish pasties or Samosas.
It's not often that I teach PE but I had the pleasure of working with 6Y on the key ball skills of catching, throwing and stopping. After practising the initial skills they then used their Higher Order Thinking experitse to create a way of practising their ball skills, it was great to see them doing constant evaluations and adaptions to make the drill better.
For a two or three week period this year we will be focusing on one of the sayings in the new School Promise. We will talk about this in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.
This week’s promise is in the category of Good Learners.
The school council chose this one in the category of Good Learners as all children know that they learn best when they are focused in class and there is a determined, hardworking atmosphere.
