Crescent’s School Promise Challenges Pupils To Be Good Friends, Good Learners And Good Citizens

On Tuesday 24 April, in front of an audience of parents and invited guests, members of Crescent School’s School Council relaunched the School Promise. Headteacher, Joe Thackway, led pupils in explaining how the Promise had been reviewed and developed and presented the new code of commitments to pupils and parents in an information meeting in the school hall.

The Crescent School has had a School Promise for many years.  The first promise was introduced by former Headteacher, Mr Huw Marshall, back in 2005 and its commitments have been at the core of the Crescent’s ethos ever since.

This year the School Council reviewed the original School Promise in collaboration with pupils and staff.  Every child wrote a promise and the School Council then worked with Mr Thackway, Mrs Stapleton and Mrs Monteith to use the children’s ideas to refresh and revitalise the Promise Statement.

As a school community Crescent School shares certain core values and beliefs. It seeks to foster and develop the qualities of kindness, tolerance and mutual respect in a safe and caring environment where staff and families work together to deliver an inspiring, challenging and varied curriculum.

Comments Joe Thackway, “Our new School Promise builds on the legacy of the original commitment.  It expresses the school community’s shared values and challenges all our pupils to be Good Friends, Good Learners and Good Citizens.  This simple set of guidelines, shared by all pupils and staff, will stand us all in good stead for the future both in school and out.”

All pupils have been presented with a specially designed School Promise card to remind them of the new commitments.

Pay It Forward Day 2018

Today we have considered how we can pass on love and kindness by being part of a worldwide initiative that is know as 'Pay-it-Forward'. The UK is one of 80 countries who, this weekend, will be doing random acts of kindness and encouraging others to do the same. It is inspired by the novel and film 'Pay it Forward' where a young boy comes up with the idea of showing kindness which quickly multiplies.

This morning Mrs Stapleton and Mr Thackway, with the help of some budding Class III actors, demonstrated how simple acts around school, at home and in the community can show appreciation and kindess. The children have explored this idea through their PSHE lessons today and how this fits well within our new School Promise of being a Good Citizen.

They will come home with an ideas checklist and some 'pay-it-forward' cards to encourage their friends and families to do the same.  Please chat with them about their learning and their ideas.

Bwengu Penny Path

There is still plenty of fundraising to do this term with the non-uniform day at half term and sponsor money still rolling in, but we would like to thank you if you cleared out the copper jar or checked down the sofa and helped construct our Penny Path in aid of Class IV Bwengu projects at the end of last term.

All that loose change, old pound coins, euros and cents came to a grand total of £57.47 which is enough to send seven secondary aged children to school for a year. Our Thermometer, outside Class V/Music Room, is on the Bwengu Board to see how we are progressing. We have already smashed our target of £930 for two toilet blocks and twenty bursaries.  We hope to raise enough for a third toilet block.

Competition Winners were:

  • Guess the Teddy Name was Oliver Bell Class VI for 'Cosmo'
  • Alyssa Barnett won 'Guess the Sweets in a Jar' for 147
  • Olivia Monk won the Classes III-VI 'Design an Easter Egg' Competition
  • Ro Somerset won the Classes R-II 'Design an Easter Egg' Competition
  • Joshua Gorbutt won the Easter Egg Hunt Puzzle, correctly guessing 'Mr Thackway' as the anagram!

Thank for all your continued support, it makes such a difference to the children in Malawi.

Jaguar Primary Schools Challenge

This week Mr Thackway and Mrs Byrne visited Princethorpe to find out all about the F1 in Schools -  Jaguar Primary School Challenge.  The STEM competition requires teams to research, design, manufacture, test, promote and race the fastest car possible using standard chassis and engine housing nets with a car body made only from card. It is a technical brief but one that has proven to really engage potential future engineers.

Princethorpe College has hosted a Regional Final for a number of years and is keen for the Crescent School to take part.  Mr Thackway and Mrs Byrne had the chance to talk to the competing teams, to look at the Pit Displays, watch the racing and chat to the children involved.

This year the winners on the day were Crackley Hall and their team the Speed Stingers have qualified for the National Finals which take place at the British Motor Museum in June.

Congratulations Crackley!
