U11 Interhouse Netball Tournament

Wednesday 21 March saw the U11 Girls' netball season close with the annual Interhouse Competition. The netball season has unfortunately been hampered with lots of cancelled games due to poor weather conditions however the Crescent girls turned out with a smile and lots of style for their Interhouse Competition.

The competition started off with a shooting contest in which every pupil was given the opportunity to score, selecting tactically which cone they wanted to shoot from. There was only one player from each house that was able to maximise points for their team in this shoot out, Ella Knight for St George, Cara Ridd for St David and Rebecca Monteith for St Andrew, however Rebecca’s shot was further away from the net and scored the most points taking her house in to the lead.

On to the netball games, the first game up was St George V St David and this was a well fought game with some lovely passing from both sides seeing the ball move quickly from end to end. However, it was St David who were able to make the most of their shooting opportunities and took the win. Final score: 3-1 to St David.

The second game was St George V St Andrew and it quickly saw St Andrew take the helm with some hot shooting from Rebecca Monteith. Rebecca commanded the circle rarely missing a shot - she had clearly taken inspiration from watching the Wasps Goal Shooter, George Fisher, the Sunday before! St George fought bravely and solid play in centre court from Mia Webb and Lucy Hardy enabled them to get into their attacking circle on several occasions, however, St Andrew’s proved themselves too strong for them this time. Final score: 11-1 to St Andrew.

The third and final game between St David and St Andrew was going to be crucial with both teams having won one game. It was a tightly-contested game with strong centre court play from both teams moving the ball quickly to their attacking circle. It went down to the final minute with St David scoring an equalising goal to draw to match, meaning that the tournament would be won on goals scored putting St Andrew into pole position. Final score: 4-4.

  • 1st Place – St Andrew
  • 2nd Place – St David
  • 3rd Place – St George

Player of the Tournament went to Rebecca Monteith.

Well done girls, some fantastic play seen across the teams.

ISA U11 Midlands Rugby Tournament

Crescent took part in their first contact rugby tournament on Friday 23 March at the ISA U11 Midlands Rugby Tournament at Princethorpe College. Looking to grow the sport in school, the children have been working hard all year to develop their skills ahead of the tournament.

In the first match, Crescent had lots of the ball but were slow to the breakdown and being turned over cost them tries. In the second match, they supported each other much better and made use of strategic kicks. They scored a couple of tries but unfortunately were beaten.

In the last match in the group, they were pitted against the strongest team. Having started to work better as a team, the Crescent boys took an early lead and were very unlucky not to get a second try (although credit must be given for a great last gasp tackle). Crescent’s strong runners caused problems but some missed tackles meant that the opposition got back into the game and eventually won.

Based on their group rankings, Crescent went on to play two further matches against the teams who had finished in a similar position to theirs in other groups. Unfortunately, illnesses and injuries meant that some of the stronger players in the team were not able to contribute. A 5-4 loss was the closest Crescent came to victory but the day a great learning curve for the boys and a pleasant experience as they enjoyed playing rugby with their school mates.
