Pupils Learn About Nigeria

To celebrate Nigerian Independence Day, on Tuesday 3 October pupils at Crescent School took part in a special assembly. Led by pupils and parents of Nigerian heritage, the assembly introduced the school community to the diverse, vibrant and amazing culture of Nigeria.

Year 6, Timi and, Year 5, Toni shared lots of key facts about the geography, wildlife, economy and culture of Nigeria and pupils then watched a video to learn a little about the music, dance and dishes of this giant of Africa. They found out that over 500 different languages are spoken in the country but that in schools in Nigeria, pupils learn in English.

Pupils were introduced to the three main ethnic groups in Nigeria, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo, and were impressed by the colourful and decorative traditional dress worn by each group.

It was fantastic for the children here at Crescent School to gain an insight into the culture of their classmates and we very much appreciate our Nigerian families helping us to have a better understanding of what it means to be from Nigeria.
