Inaugural 'Mastery Day' For Crescent Pupils

Monday 5 February 2018

We will be holding our first ‘Mastery Day’ on Monday 5 February. One of our school targets in the classroom this year is to provide opportunities to demonstrate mastery. All pupils will take part in this theme day in mixed age groups and be presented with tasks, puzzles, projects and conundrums all connected to the theme of ‘Party!’. Children will work together to reach conclusions, answers and solutions through using the skills they have learned so far.

We hope it will be a most enjoyable day for children and a fascinating day for staff to watch the pupils shine and rise to the challenges planned.

We look forward to sharing the results of our day, soon.

Coventry Cathedral Concert - Discovering The Classics

On Saturday 27 January Crescent School Choir returned to Coventry Cathedral to participate in another concert.

Entitled 'Discover the Classics', this concert was designed to give GCSE and A level students the opportunity to hear live performances of some of their set works.

Coventry Cathedral Chorus and the Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra performed works by Britten, Haydn, Handel, Faure, Stravinsky, John Williams and the Beatles.

The children’s choir, made up of pupils from Coventry and Nuneaton as well as from Crescent School, sang an arrangement of Rainbow’s 'Since you’ve been gone' and 'School Song' from Tim Minchin’s 'Matilda'. The concert ended with all the performers and the audience participating in a medley from 'Mary Poppins'.

We were delighted to be asked back and to be a part of this amazing event which gives pupils the opportunity to see and hear an orchestra and choir perform live.  We are so lucky to have such a superb venue almost on our doorstep!

Local History - Class VI Visit St Mark's Churchyard

As part of our local history topic on the Victorians, Class VI went to visit St Mark's Churchyard.

They discovered that there was much to be learnt from the gravestones. They gained information about popular names, the ages people died and tried to work our some of the stories behind the timelines that were evident.

Class VI are now going to compare this with the local census information that we have already studied.

Class I Fire Brigade Visit

On Tuesday this week, Class 1 were visited by Warwickshire Fire Service and took part in an interactive session that was both fun and informative.

The children chose Mrs Emery to be dressed in a fire fighters outfit and the children discussed each item of clothing and how it protects in a fire.  They learnt about safe fires (an adult supervised BBQ) verses unsafe fires, the importance of never playing with matches or lighters and how to 'Stop, Drop and Roll' if your clothes catch fire.

After learning that smoke rises and the safest place to be is on the floor if in a fire, the children took part in some role play, practising being woken by a smoke alarm, crawling quickly out of a building and staying out.

There was much excitement looking at the fire engine and listening to the siren. Lots of questions, lots of life saving learning and lots of fun.

A huge thank you to Warwickshire Fire Service for taking the time to deliver such an important session for the children.

Spotlight On Science

This week we have focused on Science for Classes VI, IV, III and I.  You can read below what they have been learning and view the lovely pictures.  Spotlight on Science for Classes II and V will feature after half term.

Class VI:
Science Club started last week for Class VI. Static electricity was our first topic.

Class IV:
Class IV have been studying sound, how it is made and how it travels. A large variety of instruments have been played to work out how to change volume and pitch.

Class III:
In lessons Class III were looking at Forces - so far we have had lots of fun flying kites, playing with parachutes and making windmills all whilst investigating wind force. Pupils have also designed their own 'Super Hero Cape' to help them fly, applying the knowledge they gained from their investigations on the size and shape of the blade and weights of materials, for how wind force is used most effectively. Creativity, Mastery and Practice Junior Da Vinci's have been earned, great work Year 3.

Class I:
The children have been exploring their five senses. Last week we investigated our sense of taste! We had to judge our likes and dislikes from six different foods. We then had to rank them on a scale of sweet to sour. Can you tell from our faces what we were tasting?!

Year 5 And 6 Games Lesson - Creativity Was Not Washed Away By The Rain

Rain did not dampen spirits in Year 5 and 6 Games lesson last week when students where put through their paces in a fitness circuit.

Students learnt how to carry out interval and continuous training and then had a chance to create their own sports specific circuit sessions, justifying how the exercises they had chosen would help improve their fitness for that sport.

All pupils put in fantastic effort and there were lots of Creativity Junior Da Vinci's given out too for the adaptation of some exercises to make them sports specific.  Can you guess the sport they were training for from the pictures?
