Reception Round Up - 30 April 2021
Class 1S have been discovering how to draw their self-portraits by using mirrors, practising the location and size of their features, and finally sketching and colouring their own artwork.
Kiran, Isabella and Thomas developed their skills well and we’re sure you agree, their likeness to their portraits are very lifelike!
They all received JdVs in mastery for their excellent work.
This week in Craft Club we were reaching for the stars! We designed, made, and decorated rockets using envelopes. We then made the most of the lunch time sunshine and tested our rockets using a straw as the launch pad!
The distance travelled wouldn't quite have made it to the moon, but as you can see from the smiling faces, we had lots of fun trying!
In English, Class 3Y have been studying information texts using the Guinness World Records and The World's Laziest Duck and other records. For the homework, the children attempted records suggested on the GWR Kids website. These included how many socks you could put on one foot in 30 secs, the number of teddies caught whilst blindfolded and fastest time to stack 20 LEGO bricks in a right-angle tower.
Our 3Y Record Holders in these categories were:
Most socks on one foot:
Most teddies caught:
Fastest time to stack 20 LEGO bricks in a right-angle tower
The children were also inspired to come up with their own record-breaking ideas. See next week's Courier for more Crescent Records!
Class 4M started their new English topic last week - Fairy Tales. They considered what the traditional elements of a fairy tale are and studied three very different versions of The Princess and the Pea. The authors had 'innovated' the story in exciting ways, but the plot and characters were the same.
The children then looked at how to break the story down into its relevant stages, to lead the reader through the tale in creative ways. They each selected their favourite fairy tale and created a story map, using banners, speech bubbles, arrows, and colourful illustrations to bring their tale to life. The results are fantastic, and they are all up on the wall in our classroom. Some examples are here; well done 4M!
A new Year 4 Club caused great excitement this week as 13 pupils met the challenge of producing their first notes on a Pbone.
The children arrived ready to learn in true Crescent style and the hall was quickly filled with giggles and music.
Pbone Club is a first for the school and most importantly, promises to be great fun!
Class 5F has been learning about how plants reproduce using vocabulary such as pollination, fertilization, germination as well as naming the parts of the flower using words like stigma, style, ovary, anther, and filament. On Monday they all dissected a lily, displayed it on A3 paper and labelled all the different parts.
Stories often start with plans and can be broken down into key points of a story map. 6W were walking through their story map using Seesaw to record their work so they could share it with me and the class, this led to further work the next day where they recorded an oral version of their story. Their focus and application to the task really impressed me.
Tuesday of this week saw this the final of this year’s Inter-House Geography competition. The children in Year 6 have been working hard in class learning the major cities, rivers, mountain, seas, oceans and channels of the UK and Europe. The children then took part in a class quiz to decide who goes through to represent the houses in the final. Well done to all of those children have got through.

It was a very close fought event this year, with the lead changing hands a number of times as the rounds developed. In the end however St David’s came out as clear winners and received the congratulations of the rest of the class as well as the Year 5 children who came to watch and offer their support.
