Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

Happy new year to everybody and welcome to our first newsletter of a new decade. It has been great this week seeing the children cheerfully coming back to school and enjoying meeting up with their friends. It has made for a nice quiet start to the new year with everyone finding their feet and getting back into their term time routines.

In my first assembly this week I focused on the idea of making a new style of resolution. Rather than repeating the usual ones about eating more healthily and doing more exercise, I asked the children to think about their learning habits. These can make a genuine impact on pupil achievement. In particular I talked about the ability to listen to advice and be willing to make mistakes and reflect honestly on them. This seems like quite a simple thing, but it can have such an enormous impact on the ability to learn and progress. As teachers, we all know of children who find it hard to keep an open mind and as a result close themselves off to opportunities for self-improvement. We probably all know adults like that as well. It is a theme I will be talking much more about as the year develops.

Next week we look forward to the LAMDA showcase events for the upper school children. These are something we have brought in in recent years and they provide an excellent chance for the children to practise their public speaking skills in a supportive environment before their exams the following week. I hope to see many of you there.

In the meantime, have a great weekend.

Joe Thackway
Headmaster

School Promise Rule Of The Week

For a two or three week period this year we will be focusing on one of the sayings in the new School Promise. We will talk about this in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.

This week we consider the category of Good Citizens.

Cyber-crime – please be vigilant

Parents are asked to be vigilant when reading emails relating to the payment of school fees and any other items to the Foundation.

Please note:

  • invoices are only available through the on-line parent fee portal;
  • our bank account details will NOT change during the academic year 2019-20;
  • if you receive an email purporting to amend our bank details, do not make any payment and please contact us by telephone immediately to clarify;
  • we do not email details of unsolicited discounts for payment of funds.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or my colleagues in the Bursary if you are have any doubts about the correct details or indeed if anything appears suspicious.

Around The Classes

Class 1E English

Class 1E have come back to school having had lots of fun over Christmas and perhaps staying up a little later at night. In English we have been writing excuses to our parents as to why we should be allowed to stay up late using the word ‘because’ to explain our ideas and extend our sentences. There have been some fantastic excuses from the children.

Class 2W Maths

Children in Class 2W were challenged to play a dice game which demonstrated their understanding of place value.  They rolled a dice to create a 3 digit number: explaining what each part of the number represented.  They described how many hundreds, tens and units it had as well as explaining the highest and lowest total numbers that could be achieved.  Some children extended this further by deciding which digit to select for each roll.

Class 3S Maths

3S have been learning how to measure objects to the nearest centimetre and the relationship between cm and mm. We then investigated measuring with a tape measure by estimating the lengths of our forearms and feet. After our predictions, we discovered that most people's forearm and foot measurements are very close - maybe even identical!  Try it at home!

We then discussed which prayer cards demonstrated the character of God by devising a ‘Diamond 9’ pattern.

Year 6 Local History

This term Year 6 will be studying our local area during the Victorian era (1837-1901). If you have an hour to spare over the this half term I would really recommend a visit to Rugby library. Upstairs is the local history department where you can look at ‘Rugby Almanac’ and ‘Kelly’s Directory’. These contain all sorts of fascinating information from our area. I’d recommend looking up the area where you live and see how much it has changed.

Unfortunately we are unable to remove these books from the library to gain their full effect but we will be looking at some extracts during our lessons.

Bayleaf Cookery Co-Curricular Club

In cookery this week the children made raisin and oat cookies.  The classroom was filled with a sweet cinnamon smell and everyone got on mixing, creaming and making the dough. The children worked together with the older ones helping their younger peers.  We are hoping to have a very tasty term and hope you enjoy the food they made.
