Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

I hope you all enjoyed your half term break and were able to spend some quality time with your children. It has been great to see them all coming back to school this week refreshed and ready for school and for learning.

Before half term I mentioned in the newsletter that we were having a visit from Serena Alexander, who is an educational consultant dealing specifically with independent school inspections. She spent part of Tuesday and all of Wednesday with us and looked at all areas of the school including academic achievement and personal development. It was good to hear so much positive feedback from a genuine expert and she also gave us some key areas to work on and develop. She was immensely impressed in particular with the pupils’ personal and social development that she observed. In the pupil interviews, one of the children described the school as being like a second family, where they felt at home and valued. This was a phrase that really resonated and encapsulated what we are trying to achieve. We all know just how important that sense of belonging is if we are to be successful and thrive, be it at school or in life in general.

Outside of the classroom, the highlight of the week has to be the success of the U11 Hockey team in the ISA Midlands tournament at Nottingham Hockey Centre. Not only did they manage to win the tournament, they did not concede a single goal in any of their matches. ‘How are we so good?’ I asked the children when they got back. None of them knew so I suppose it must just be down to the tried and trusted recipe of talent, practice and good coaching. Well done to all of children and staff involved.

The autumn combination of grey skies and falling temperatures is now in full swing but we have not let that dampen our spirits here. It might be a good weekend to go out on a family walk in the countryside to see the changing seasons. Whatever you do, I hope you all enjoy a restful family weekend.

U11 Mixed Hockey Team Crowned ISA Midlands Champions

Crescent’s U11 Hockey team were crowned the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Midlands Champions this week after an amazing performance in a thrilling competition at the Nottingham Hockey Centre.

The seven-a-side tournament took place on Wednesday 6 November with 10 teams from across the region taking part.

In the first-round group stage Crescent started well and confidently dispatched three teams with good wins against Salterford House School 3-0, Twycross House School 8-0 and Dixie Grammar School 4-0.  With excellent passing and accurate shooting skills the team deserved to qualify for the second stage.

In the afternoon they faced a further four matches in a round robin competition against the top five teams from the first round qualifier. Crescent comfortably won all their matches without conceding a single goal to finish the tournament in first place.  The beat Stafford Prep School 1-0, Birchfield School 2-0, Old Vicarage School 2-0 and then Dixie Grammar School again 6-0.

Teaching Assistant, Sally Dowling, was delighted commenting, “It was a great day, the team were amazing, they played a super game, kept hold of the ball, passed confidently and were just on fire. We are incredibly proud of them all.”

Playing for Crescent were George Bell (Captain), Archie Dowling, Eve Ferguson, Josh Gorbutt (Goal Keeper), Harriett Gray, Sienna Moran (Goal Keeper), Amy Robinson, Mathew Thomas and Noah Windley.

Good Luck to Year 6 Children

Many of our Year 6 have already sat either the 11+ or other independent school examinations and now the majority are off to Princethorpe College tomorrow. Having talked to them, I know they feel prepared and ready to do their best in the Foundation's senior school entrance examination. We wish them good luck, we are all very proud of our pupils' hard work and determination to do their best and of how they have supported each other as they have worked their way through the entrance examination season.

We have our fingers crossed for you all!

Bad Weather Procedure

It is the school’s policy to remain open during periods of bad weather where reasonably possible. However, there may be occasions where opening the school may not be possible for health and safety reasons, or indeed when travel to school for pupils and staff may be especially dangerous.

If we do decide to close the school due to bad weather overnight, we would inform parents in the following ways:

  • The school website will be updated with details of the closure. This is likely to be the first thing we are able to do as it does not require a member of staff to be in school
  • All parents will be informed by text message and email

If we need to close the school during the normal day we will follow the same procedure as outlined above. Members of staff will of course stay with any uncollected children in this event until their parents or guardians are able to come and collect. If this does occur, parents should please come to the front of the school and report to reception.

School Promise Rule Of The Week

Over the course of the school year we will, in turn, focus on one of the elements of the School Promise. We will talk about it in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss it with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.

This week we continue with the category of Good Citizens.

We are studying The Tiger Child by Joanna Troughton, the children have loved researching these amazing creatures and have appreciated their beauty by completing a project of their choice:

For example, some children have made

  • A picture, painting or collage
  • A fact file: poster or PowerPoint
  • A model making activity: clay or other medium
  • A cake or even biscuits!

We have created a fantastic display which you will be able to see at the next Open Corridors!

Class 1E Measurement In Maths

How big is a squid’s eye? How small is a dwarf goby? How long is an anteater's tongue?

Class 1E discovered answers to lots of these questions about the size of some of the largest and smallest animals in the world as part of an introduction to measuring using centimetres and metres.

Great investigation skills, comparative discussion and understanding of the importance of accuracy when measuring.

In case you are interested, the answers are:

  • Squid eye = 30cm
  • Dwarf goby = 1 cm
  • Anteater's tongue = 60cm

Class 2W Science – Material Choices

This week in Science Class 2W have been investigating different materials to find out which would be best for making a tent.  They looked at creating and building structures which would be strong, flexible, secure and stopping the tent from falling over or blowing away.  They also looked at which materials would be strong, waterproof and flexible for the cover so that they would have a safe and secure shelter where they would stay warm and dry.

Class 5F Egyptian Homework Projects

For their history homework last half term, Class 5F worked on an Egyptian project of their choice. This open learning activity really allows the children's creativity to flow and lets them explore aspects of the topic which they are particularly interested in. There were some wonderful creations which the children enjoyed sharing with their class mates.
