Welcome to The Courier, Crescent School's electronic newsletter.

This week we have details of the Past Pupil matches, we welcomed back 2019 Year 6 Leavers to play against the current Year 6 children.

It's always lovely when children come through the School Office and this week we had the delight of two Reception children popping up to collect some card in their dressing up clothes! As you can see from the photo it brightened up our day.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

I write to you this week from my hotel room in London where I am attending this year’s conference of the IAPS. This is an association of prep school heads and is an excellent opportunity to hear speakers and take part in workshops on a wide range of issues affecting education in general and independent schools in particular. Whilst I never like to be away from work for long periods I do find the conferences very useful and I come back with lots of ideas to help me build on our improvement plans for Crescent. We will look at issues such as maths mastery, the future of IT teaching, the changing nature of the inspection regime and the unpredictable and volatile political climate of our age. The conference centre is located within a stone’s throw of Westminster Abbey and the House of Commons and you can imagine the sense of history in the making all around us.

On my return I look forward to hearing about the past pupils’ match on Thursday this week as well as today’s coffee morning. I’m sure they will have gone well in my absence and thank you to the staff and FOC for their efforts in arranging these two important events.

Next week we look forward to our first open day of the year for prospective parents and the open corridor event that follows. This latter event is a chance for you to come in and see the new corridor development and the refurbished IT suite as well as examples of all the children’s hard work so far this term. I do hope you are able to come along.

Have a great weekend everybody

2019 Leavers Return For Past Pupil Sports Challenge

Crescent School gave a fantastic warm welcome to the Leavers of 2019, on Thursday 26 September, when they returned to their old primary school to take part in the annual Past Pupil Sports Matches.

It was lovely to see all their familiar faces and to welcome the new Year 7s and their parents back into school.  After a quick catch up, coffee and cake, and despite a worrying downpour at 4.00pm, 15 minutes later the boys and girls were out in the sunshine, on the field and courts respectively, ready to face Crescent’s teams.

The matches were great fun to watch, fast paced with plenty of shots at goal.  Midway through the teams swapped over to ensure everyone had a chance to play.

Sport is such a huge part of life here at Crescent, and it was wonderful to see the camaraderie of all the pupils, the netball girls even included all the young spectators in their match huddle.

This year the results in the Football were 5-2 to past pupils and in the Netball the Year 7s also came out on top beating the Crescent Blue team 4-0 and just being held to a draw by the Green team 4-4.  What matters most though is that great fun was had by all.

School Promise Rule Of The Week

For a two or three week period this year we will be focusing on one of the sayings in the new School Promise. We will talk about this in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.

This week we feature Good Learners and a good motto for our Year 6 children as they approach their entrance exams:

‘We work hard and try our best'

Current Expectations For Uniform

In the first half of the Autumn Term children should come to school in summer uniform together with their school blazers whilst the temperatures are still reasonably mild.  Parents can use their discretion to send children in winter unfirom if the weather turns cooler or if it is raining.

After the half term break all children are expected to be in full winter uniform.  Parents can again then use their discretion as to whether blazers or the school coat are more appropriate for the weather at the time.

When it is cold we do need the children to have their coats in school so we can make a decision on outdoor break times that applies to all children.

Thank you for your cooperation with these guidelines.

Incorrect Sports Kit

We remind parents that children need to have the correct kit for PE, games and swimming. Please check the information book here to ensure that your child has the correct sports kit.

Jewellery And Watches In School

Following on from genuine feedback, we have been very happy to reconsider our stance on the wearing of watches in school.

Whilst respecting cost, we do want to allow children to embrace appropriate modern technology.  As such we will welcome modern style watches as long as they don't have any communication capability.  We would recommend that this isn't appropriate for children in Pre-Prep.

Please do have your own family conversations as to priorities and suitability for your own Year 3 and above child.

Class 1E Art

We have been creating a large scale piece of art in the style of Artist Piet Mondrian - big, bright and bold. His work is famous for its vertical and horizontal, black lines filled with bright, primary colours – red, blue and yellow. The children learned how use colour, shape and space to create a unique group piece of art.

We then moved onto creating a large class work of art with every child deciding where their pieces should go. We were all very pleased with the result.

Class 1E Geography Mini Field Trip

This week we brought the children’s learning about house styles to life by going on a mini field trip around school identifying different styles of house.

The children found detached, semi-detached, terraced houses and bungalows in the local area and really enjoyed drawing them and noting down the differences and similarities.

Class 2W Measure Right Angles

Class 2W children were thrilled to discover that they had their own portable right angle measurers in Maths this week.  Nothing around us remained untested!

Class 3S Geography

In Geography, Class 3S have been exploring how we can access information to find out something about anywhere in the world without even leaving the classroom. Excellent timing with the arrival of our brand new set of iPads to school allowed the children to read news headlines and then find out the '5 Day Weather Forecast' for Rugby. We found that 'Climate Change' is big news all over the world and it is going to be pretty wet and breezy this week.

Year 6 Historical Fiction

Year 6 have all been studying historical fiction this term, our focus has been World War 1, studying War Game by Michael Foreman and War Horse by Michael Morpurgo to name a few. From this we revised expanded noun phrases, expanded noun clauses and adverbials.

This week has culminated in a piece of open learning where the children were asked to produce a piece of writing about World War 1 in the genre of their choice. The children have met the challenge well and their work will be on show for Open Corridors.

Football Roundup

U11 v St. Marie’s

If anyone watched the England v Kosovo match, this was very similar. Crescent took the lead and looked devastating on the counter-attack. However, mistakes at the back allowed St. Marie’s to score. In the end, despite having fewer chances and despite Crescent playing some very attractive football, St. Marie’s came out on top

U11 Football Tournament

This is the first of a number of tournaments up until Christmas. Crescent will have played all of the local opposition after that. In the first three matches, Crescent were outstanding. They showed so much energy to win the ball back and continued to pass with creativity and accuracy. They learned from their previous match and were more clinical in finishing and playing out from the back. So far, Crescent are three wins from three.

U10 Princethorpe Tournament

The boys were fantastic in the tournament, winning their first game comfortably and then leading a strong opposition 3-0. Unfortunately, this was pulled back to 3-3. Crescent were then unfortunate to play against an under 11 team and just lost out 1-0, hitting the post in the last few minutes. When the groups crossed over, Crescent had another tough match against The Revel but came out on the right side of a 1-0 score line this time.

U11 v Cawston Grange

Crescent started well on a bobbly pitch and were unlucky not to take the lead after a couple of two touch passing moves finished with a test for the goalkeeper. Crescent then struggled to get out from the back and needed Isaac to bail them out at times. 0-0 at half-time. In the second half, both teams picked up their play in an exciting game. Cawston were fortunate with an own goal and then scored a good second. Tom halved the deficit as Crescent upped the pressure and threw more boys forward. Cawston took advantage of the spaces at the back to make it 3-1. Another friendly where Crescent showed a great potential and learned a lot.

FoC - Update on Cressie The Guide Dog We Named

This week I received an update on our Guide dog puppy, Crescent or Cressie as she's now known.  We raised money to name Cressie back in 2017/18.

Cressie is doing extremely well in her training and indeed her picture made it onto the Guide Dog facebook page this week whilst she was out and about training in Leamington Spa.

She's definitely grown up from the little puppy that came to visit us almost 18 months ago.
