Welcome to The Courier, Crescent School's e-newsletter.

Lots of comings and goings this week with Years 3, 4 and 5 taking part in residentials. Well done to everyone who took part, we were impressed with your enthusiasm for all the activities.

Back in school it has been just as busy with plenty going on in lessons and we even found time to celebrate Star Wars day, thanks to Mr Moore.

Do keep an eye on the Events section, for updates for the term ahead and read on to find out what else has been happening in school this week.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

There has been a different feel to the school this week with so many of the children out on residential trips. For those that have stayed here, this has meant for a lovely peaceful few days with a bit more space on the playground and in the changing areas.

We particularly enjoyed our Star Wars day celebrations thanks to master chef Mr. Moore on Wednesday, who brought in his surprisingly large collection of Star Wars figures and displayed them for all the children to see as they were served their specially themed lunch. I think there are pictures of this elsewhere in the Courier this week for you to enjoy.

I have managed myself to get over to Whitemoor Lakes and to the Frank Chapman centre to see the children in action and also keep an eye on the safe running of the two trips. I am delighted to report that both children and staff were very well behaved and were genuinely enjoying the opportunity to be outside, having fun and putting their growth mindset training into practise. We have all missed residential trips and it's that little bit harder going when it's your first time, but hopefully the groundwork that has been laid this year will stand those children in good stead for many trips in the future.

With slightly warmer weather forecast for the weekend my exciting plan is to plant out some of my vegetable seedlings that I have been bringing on. That often results in a hard frost the following week, so I am hoping for better luck this year.

Joe Thackway
Headmaster

Class 6W Helpers For Open Evening

It is great that Class 6W are very proud to be able to tour parents again this term. Mr Webb and I have given them some coaching and they showed great confidence and insight into the school that we all love.

Children will need their sports kits for lessons and for co-curricular on Tuesday as well as their summer uniform and blazer; those of the class who are remining in school will be given a light tea.

If you are returning to school then please come to the front of the school and join Class 6W in the Science room. Parents can collect children at the end of Open Evening about 7pm. Please come to the pupil entrance where Mrs Nelson will see them out to you.

News

May The 4th Be With You And With Your Tummies!

It was May the 4th on Wednesday, also known as Star Wars Day, and the force was certainly with Jedi Master Mr Moore and his team of storm troopers as they created a very special Star Wars themed lunch.

In a galaxy far, far away (the school hall) the children enjoyed Toad In The Wampa Hole served with asteroid potatoes and roasted carrots and peas. Of course, there was also the usual options of Jabba Jacket Potatoes and Palpatine Pasta filled with Sith Salad or CP30 Coleslaw.

Lunchtime was completed with a particularly tasty treat – Mrs Slatcher’s special Wookie Cookies.

Despite being on their residential, Years 3 and 4 didn’t miss out as we saved the display for them all to see, and they got to enjoy their Wookie Cookies yesterday!

Ukraine Collection Thank You

We received a thank you email from Nikoletta Tóth and Attila Mikola who organised the Ukraine collection:

'We have done a brilliant job with this collection for the Ukrainian refugees and the smaller charities helping them. There were things among the donations we could not ship or that were not really needed but as promised we didn't throw away anything.

We managed to send two lorries of supplies to the Maltese Cross in Hungary. They are an equivalent to the Salvation Army and are helping with temporary shelters, food banks, supporting families etc. that took in refugees. Then one lorry went to Moldova containing hygiene products, blankets, sleeping bags, clothes, baby supplies, first aid and medical supplies, medicine etc.

We would like to mention all the heart warming messages that were written and put into the donations. It really showed how much this situation affects everyone and how supporting we all are. I'm sure these messages of support gave strength to those who have read them.

We would like to thank everyone involved. Specially the schools collecting including Crescent School and all the people who donated or helped in any way. What good hearted people are living in our community. Thank you all! On behalf of the ones in need. Let's hope peace will come to them soon.'

It has been wonderful to see the excitement in the children as we have returned to residentials this week. For safeguarding reasons, please could I remind all families NOT to share any photographs from residentials on social media.

Eid Mubarak!

A big thank you to Sophia and Anaya who were keen to share their personal experiences of the important celebration of Eid-al-Fitr this week.

We heard how their families celebrate by wearing new clothes, eating special food and meeting with family and friends to pray and mark the end of the Muslim month of Ramadan. 1SS completed tasks to help broaden their learning and understanding through making crescent moons, writing sentences, completing wordsearches and making cards.

Class 1LS Forest School

We were very lucky to have the glorious weather for our Forest School session again this week. A few tools were introduced to the children this week, as it was their final session and a few of them had a go at making their own jewellery. They had the opportunity to saw a biscuit section off of a log, to then create a hole in it and thread some string. They were introduced to a pruning saw and palm drills and they did a fantastic job.

As well as this, we were very busy building dens, painting logs with wood and looking at the new plants and bugs that have emerged now that Spring has fully sprung.

Attached are some photos from the last two sessions. It was a pleasure to enjoy the past six weeks with 1LS and watch their enthusiasm and love of nature grow.

(We will have a few more sessions as part of their Outdoor Learning after half term.)

Year 1 Mini Brass Taster

Year 1 enjoyed a Mini Brass taster session this morning. It’s always a popular activity and the children had great fun finding out about brass instruments and playing the hose-a-phones!

Mrs Fisher has been running Mini Brass Club for Year 2s for a few years now and it is a great introduction to future musical opportunities in the school. Many of our talented brass players first picked up their instruments in Mini Brass.

Class 1LS English

As part of our learning in English, we have been using the series of Supertato texts. The children have thoroughly enjoyed reading all the different stories about Supertato and his arch nemesis, Evil Pea!

The children will be writing about their own veggie superheroes, so at the beginning of the week, they made them! There were Supercarrots, Superspuds and even a Superpineapple!

They had a great time and making the superheroes and writing amazing descriptions.

Well done!

Whitemoor Lakes Residential

Year 3 and 4 had a wonderful break away at Whitemoor Lakes on Tuesday and Wednesday. We were welcomed by a very friendly staff team who took the children on a tour of the site and showed them their bedrooms. Activities included climbing and archery along with various team building challenges.

The fabulous food kept everyone energised and much fun and laughter was had along the way; especially around the campfire - just ask the children about the moon story! Many of the children wanted to stay longer and move in. It’s clear to see, the whole experience was a fantastic success!

A vimeo of the photos will be sent next week.

Mr Perks is very proud of all his students and looks forward to their very promising Tae Kwon Do journey in the future.

School Promise Rule Of The Week

For a two or three week period this year we will be focusing on one of the sayings in the School Promise. We will talk about this in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.

We continue with the category of Good Friends and focus on the theme of good manners. Simple acts of courtesy and kindness can make such a difference to our quality of life and it is something we value very highly at Crescent, as I know you do at home.

Play Leader Training

Year 6 Yellow House pupils had a great day last Friday learning about the art of leadership. Pupils looked at a number of inspirational leaders, analysed key attributes strong leaders have and then thought deeply about the characteristics they possess and those they may need to develop further.

We played games to develop communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal,  gaining an understanding of the importance of clear, simple and short instructions.  We also had a look at potential risks and how to risk assess before carrying out an activity and the importance of planning and being prepared. Pupils then had a go at leading their peers through a variety of different traditional playground games and sporting activities before planning and leading their own sessions. I was very impressed with the wonderful ideas the pupils expressed on how to develop play time and lunchtimes to be as much fun as possible for all year groups.

Outside School

Emily Enjoys Her Rugby

Emily has been enjoying playing rugby both inside and outside of school. She opted to play Rugby in her Games afternoon and has worked hard on her skills and was a part of the Crescent team that played in the U9s ISA Midlands Tag Rugby tournament at Princethorpe recently.

Before Easter she played in a contact rugby festival in Nuneaton for Old Laurentians and then last weekend Emily headed off for Chichester to take part in her first ever tour. She had an amazing weekend full of tackling, teamwork and camaraderie with her U9 team making it through to the playoff final. Despite a sterling effort they were defeated to finish in a very respectable 2nd place. Emily was lucky enough to be presented with her shield by the Mayor of Chichester.

Well done to Emily it is great to see you having such fun with your sport!

Esme Wins Colouring Competition

Esme visited Draycote Water over the Easter holidays and entered their Easter colouring competition. She was thrilled to receive an email confirming she had won the competition and that she was the recipient of this lovely Easter hamper!

Well done Esme!
