Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

We enjoyed a lovely final two days of the term here in school, with lots of celebration events including the Spring Concert on Monday and Tuesday's Easter Service. I hope this sent all of the children home with a spring in their step looking forward to a long awaited and well-deserved holiday.

For me, I am looking forward to a few days on a remote Scottish island with my wife to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. When I tell people this they often say ask me ‘What is there to do there?’ The answer is very little, other than walks and time to read and contemplate, which is exactly why we chose it. Having said that, a week of rain and mist might be in store, after which I might not be quite so sure that it is the perfect mini break after all. We will see.

If you have something planned with your family, I hope it goes well and in any event I hope you get to spend some quality time with your children and to find space to relax and time to wind down. I look forward to seeing the children all again back safe and sound on Monday 25 April at the beginning of what promises to be an exciting summer term.

Best wishes

Joe Thackway

Outdoor Learning In The Summer Term

Next term we are looking forward to the commencement of our outdoor learning programme for all of the children across the school from Years 1 to 6. As we announced at the beginning of the school year this will replace swimming for the final term and will take place each week and in the same slot on the timetable.

Outdoor learning will consist of a combination of forest school activities as well as orienteering, team building and leadership skills training. This is a structured and fully planned series of activities that will develop in the children collaborative work skills and enhance their growth mindset in problem solving situations. It will also give them the opportunity to learn and work outdoors during the warmer period of the year.

We will be guided by the John Muir Programme of Outdoor Learning to build a cross curricular programme which encourages children to learn new skills, to take care and pride in their school and local community, whilst developing problem solving, teamwork and critical thinking skills.  Progressive learning experiences will motivate children to become successful learners and to develop as healthy, confident, logical, problem solvers as well as responsible and reflective citizens.

Pre-Prep will be looking at developing their outdoor learning areas, Year 3 and 4 developing the Forest School area and Year 5 and 6 developing school grounds with sensory garden and planting trees as well as moving into the local community of Bilton.

The teachers running this programme will be Mrs McCollin, Mr Adkins and Miss Humphries. There will also be teaching assistants working with the groups. Miss Humphreys has recently completed her fully accredited forest school training course and is excited about delivering these sessions to the children in our recently extended Jubilee Wood.

What to wear:

On those days, please send your child to school in their normal school uniform. They should bring with them their PE kit, including tracksuit bottoms or black leggings and a long sleeved top. Planting activities we have planned should not require heavy digging so trainers will be fine as footwear.

Super Spring Concert Showcases The Talent Of Crescent's Musicians

Crescent School's much anticipated Spring Concert took place on Monday 4 April with the school hall packed with parents eager to be entertained by an afternoon of fine music and song. They were not disappointed!

The school orchestra opened the concert performing two pieces confidently, Can You Feel The Love from The Lion King and Fidgety Feet by Larocca and Shields, the impact of their recent orchestra workshop was clear to see.  Then came the first of the instrumental solos with Katherine on treble recorder, her Largo by Vivaldi was finger perfect.

Wacky Music were up next with the toe-tapping piece Easter Samba arranged by peripatetic teacher, Di Fisher. Hot on their heels was Alex Barnett who skilfully played Trumpet Tune by Clarke. The audience were impressed by Brass Group’s lively Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious by Rogers and Hammerstein and the Sherman brothers respectively.

Another solo followed with Rory enthusiastically playing Hedwig’s Theme by Williams on cornet. Then Flute Group played the traditional Country Gardens delightfully and Stephanie stayed on stage to perform Dance of the Mirlitons by Tchaikovsky beautifully.

Year 3 enchanted all with their Dotty Waltz by Watts on recorder before Alice and Charlie performed Justin Bieber’s Love Yourself in a super duet on guitar. The talented Faris rounded off the instrumental solos superbly playing Opening Night Jazz by Mier on piano.

The concert concluded with a super performance by the Choir.  Pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 sang four pieces. They belted out the challenging The Call by Spektor, the uplifting What A Wonderful World by Weiss and Thiele, the lovely Touch The Sky by Mandel and as a finale A Little Can Change Our World by Lawrence.

Our enormous thanks and congratulations go to all Crescent School's accomplished performers who took to the stage in front of their proud parents, and of course to all their teachers and Director of Music, Julie Barnes who have helped them achieve so much.

Trinity Term Uniform Requirements

Summer uniform is to be worn after the Easter break.

Girls

  • Grey blazer
  • Green and white striped dress
  • Green school cardigan
  • White knee-high socks
  • Green school sun hat/cap

Boys

  • Grey blazer
  • White short-sleeved shirt with collar and tie
  • Green school pullover
  • Grey short trousers or long grey trousers
  • Grey knee length socks
  • Green school sun hat/cap

Blazers should be worn to and from school. Children normally remove them once they are in the playground in the morning. On the days children wear PE kit to school they should have their Crescent tracksuit top on. Children are able to wear the blazer with their cricket whites if they wish to.

Children often grow quickly so it's good to regularly check and replace any damaged, missing or ill-fitting items.

We would ask you to check:

  • Uniform is labelled with the child's name not initials. We have a lot of uniform in lost property which is not labelled so we are unable to return it. If it is not reunited with its owner it is put into the pre-loved uniform stock
  • Your child is wearing their own uniform as coats/jumpers/cardigans/blazers etc sometimes get mixed up
  • Dress/skirt length should be on or below the knee
  • Children have the correct PE kit for their year
  • Shoes are black school shoes
  • Hair should be tied back

A list of items stocked in school can be found under Housekeeping.

Please note:

We have had very high levels of interest in places for Reception and our Year 3 class for September 2022 entry at the Early Bird Application deadline stage. As a result, we have already allocated all of the available places in these year groups for September 2022. We are now operating waiting groups in these year groups for families who are still interested in a place, should a suitable one become available.

We are currently operating waiting groups in most other years apart from our current Reception and Year 1 classes (Year 1 and 2 for September 2022 entry) where we do have some places available as these year groups each have two classes.

We are already taking registrations for places in Reception and Year 3 starting in September 2023. It would be helpful for us to know as soon as possible if current Crescent families have a child who will be of Reception age in September 2023 and if you are likely to be interested in a place for them.

Class 3Y Pen Licence

It is always an exciting time for the children when they gain their pen licence, enabling them to make the move from writing in pencil to pen.

For this rite of passage, the children have to show that they can write neatly and consistently in cursive, joined handwriting in all of their work, not just handwriting tasks.

The following children have shown pride in the presentation of all of their learning tasks and have been awarded a Pen Licence and their first handwriting pen:

  • Toni
  • Maxi
  • Samuel

Well done!
