Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

By a strange coincidence, my assembly earlier in the week focused on the story of ‘Jesus and the storm’. We talked about how his disciples were rocked around in a boat on the stormy waters, feeling scared and anxious until Jesus finally awoke and asked them to stay quiet and be still. This led to into my promise message of the week which was to be ‘calm and sensible’. This is especially good advice if you find yourself in an argument with a friend that starts to get out of hand. Little did we know at that point that this would prove quite prophetic, given the storms we have had today.

Overnight, we took the decision to keep children away from the outdoor spaces throughout the day to ensure their safety inside the building. We also ended up having our bake sale indoors this morning, which actually worked really well and it is possibly something we can repeat in the future. The children all enjoyed the opportunity to buy a lovely looking cake or sweet and this brightened up a day of indoor break times.

I would also make a special mention today of the history workshop earlier in the week. It was wonderful to see the children in Year 3 and 4 looking so authentic in their costumes and enjoying a day of discovery and fun. Many thanks indeed to Mrs Yates in particular for setting this day up and well done to all of the families for finding such excellent costumes.

I do hope the weather conditions haven't hampered people's travel arrangements today or over the weekend. It would not be a good day to be on a ferry across the English Channel for example (I think they have just cancelled all sailings). Whatever you do have planned for next week I hope it goes well and you can spend some time relaxing with your families.

With my very best wishes for the half term break.

Best wishes

Joe Thackway
Headmaster

Pupils Thoroughly Enjoyed Growth Mindset Day

Last Friday, pupils were off timetable taking part in a carousel of activities for Crescent School’s Growth Mindset Day. Pupils were encouraged to think, approach and participate creatively as they took part in enrichment sessions to develop their skills in different ways.

You can read about some of their challenges and activities below and watch a short video of all the fun here: Growth Mindset Day

In RP they got creative with a range of construction equipment with a challenge to build a shelter for a small Lego figure. The children selected their equipment of choice and set to work, individually, in pairs and in small groups. It gave the children great collaborative opportunities, and it was wonderful to see and hear so many ideas being shared. Some offered suggestions and shared their experiences as they showed us what they'd made.  They tackled challenges such as including a roof, shelter height, size and doorways and adopted a growth mindset as they adapted and amended their work to make improvements to meet the challenge.

Their physical challenge for Growth Mindset Day was to keep running around the playground perimeter and see how many laps they could do. It didn't take long before little legs started to get tired and there were lots of opportunity to talk about strategies to keep going when it got tricky - amongst the children's ideas were slowing down, walking for a while, having a drink, encouraging your friends and walking as a group to make it more fun. Everyone had to find a way that worked for them to complete an extra lap when it got tough. There was lots of talk throughout the day of their colourful brains and not being able to do things yet!

Class 1SS had to build bridges that a toy car could travel across. The creative use of tape, lollipop sticks, card and wood led to the design and build of three original bridges. The children were innovative and solved problems quickly. Great excitement was had at the end of the session as two out of three cars successfully made their journey across! In their physical task, the children were given the same pieces of equipment and had to design their own game and present how to play, how to score points and ultimately, how to win. They continued their creativity in the classroom by being imaginative with a ‘it’s not a cup’ activity. The children crafted things such as a castle, a rocket and even a turkey out of a paper cup! They had to think carefully about their design and how they were going to construct their ideas.

Class 1LS had an extremely enjoyable and productive day. They began by talking about their grey and colourful brains and then embarked on a range of activities which explored their ‘having a try’ and ‘yet’ outlooks. The children had to use only an A4 sized sheet of foil to make a boat for a family of Compare Bears to float in, which didn’t sink! There was lots of experimenting with different shapes and sizes and there was lots of perseverance and resilience shown when some boats sank initially. The children also worked with Mr Stapleton in small teams to solve problems together. They had to move a golf ball using only gutter pipes, to make it roll into a bucket. They also had to find their way successfully across a crocodile infested swamp! Everyone felt a little out of the comfort zone at times, but the children loved every minute and enjoyed the challenges.

Children in Year 2 embraced the activities on Growth Mindset Day and developed their understanding of positive thinking and the impact it can have on their learning and friendships.  Mrs Mercer's assembly story of Walt Disney's knockbacks, resilience and subsequent success inspired them to consider their own strengths and qualities and things to be grateful for.  They loved the working together, including the practical team challenges presented by Mr Stapleton, and understood that they are better together.  We hope that you are beginning to see this growth mindset in their language and attitudes out of school too.

In 3Y the children used a range of resources to help them solve maths problems which had a variety of different answers. They had a think about the positive thoughts that can keep their mind growing and designed colourful brains. They imagined what they would do if we had a Yes Day where the answers to every request and question was YES!

Together, Year 3 and 4 were challenged to put their amazing imaginations to the test by creating fantastic and mythical creatures using advanced photo editing software. They then used their creations to compose a short play using the Puppet Pals app. Both classes had a wonderful time exploring their creative areas of the brain and rising to new challenges.

Class 4M really enjoyed using their 'colourful brains' last Friday, and they completed a range of activities and challenges. They kicked off the day with the 'Tangram Task'. The children learnt about the ancient mathematical activity, where they are given seven different shapes, all different sizes and colours, and they attempt to create different pictures using all of the shapes. They attempted an apple, a candle, a horse, a turtle, and many more. Some of them were even able to create a square with an arrow inside it, which was a real challenge. We have some wonderful pictures of their creations.

Next, they brainstormed some inspirational words for motivation, all around the Growth Mindset feelings - they came up with, 'I am unique', 'I am brave', 'I meet challenges’, and 'I show resilience', to name but a few. They them made their own 'Fortune Tellers', illustrating them with their positive affirmations.

Lastly, over the weekend, the children completed the 'Imagination Workout' - a creative activity where they had a grid of twelve squares, each with a mark or shape inside. The challenge was to turn these marks into pictures and images as creatively as possible. Mrs Monteith was amazed at the results; the children did a fantastic job, and their images will make an eye-catching display.

Class 5F challenged their creative side by reading a story and changing elements to devise a new story. Some children loved this freedom of imagination whilst others had to dig deeper into their growth mindset and recognise, they did have the creative skills.

Class 6W and 5F were presented with a physical challenge - in groups of six, the teams had to lower a long cane to the ground, using only one finger on each hand of each pupil. The groups found it tough at first as the cane kept rising instead of being lowered. Those teams who were successful believed it was possible, showed great resilience every time it went wrong, tried and tried again and used positive vocal encouragement to each other until they lowered the cane to the ground and successfully completed the challenge.

These classes also met the Compose and Create strands by producing a way of promoting growth mindset to others: we had TV adverts, poems, raps and songs. The children enjoyed working collaboratively, having to agree and direct the group to a finished piece. There were some memorable presentations with some very catchy tunes!

In Music pupils explored the Compose strand by choosing and ordering sounds. They chose from a selection of body sounds, such as clap, stamp, click fingers or slap knees. They then experimented with them, getting faster or slower, louder and quieter, adding an ending and even doing them in reverse order. Pupils discovered that composing music is a lot simpler than they thought and were rather pleased to discover that they can call themselves composers!

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Growth Mindset Day, it really focused their thoughts on how much they can all achieve by thinking positively and creatively.

After School - Booking Information

Dear Parents

We are very happy to see the increased interest in After School Club. We love to see your children, play with them, help them out with their homework and let them build valuable relationships with other children from different year groups.

Recently the interest in After School has been so high that we have had to recruit more people to our team – we have now an amazing team of lovely staff!

To ensure we take the best possible care of our children, we ask you to make sure you book your After School club slot in advance – 10.00am on the day is the deadline for bookings. This is to ensure we have the right level of supervision. It also allows us to let our lovely kitchen staff know how many children we expect to stay for tea so they can make enough food for all of the children.

Recently we have noticed many children have been booked in after that deadline or not booked in at all. This creates a real challenge for us as we have to either tell children they cannot eat tea with everybody else, or we have to split the food between all of the children, which means the portions are significantly smaller. I think you will agree with us that this is not a good solution at all.  As a result of this, starting this half term, if your child is booked into After School later than 10.00am we cannot provide food for them.

Additionally, please make sure your bookings are correct, ensuring the date and type of booking. After School club runs between 3.45pm and 5.45pm, with three options to book:

  • 1st session (with drink and biscuit) 3.45pm- 4.45pm
  • 2nd session (with tea) 4.45pm and 5.45pm
  • Both sessions 3.45pm - 5.45pm

We serve tea around 5pm.  If you need to make changes to your booking on the day please contact the School Office.

We would also like to remind parents that the After School mobile number is for After School pick up use only. Any other queries should be directed to the office in the office working hours (8.15am – 4.15pm).

Thank you.

Miss Wrzesniacka (Miss V)

Around The Classes

Pre-Prep Music

In our music lessons this term classes in PrePrep have been learning a song about Winter, called When the cold wind blows. This song mentions things that happen in Winter, such as bare trees, animals hibernating, birds flying south, snow, short days and long nights. Pupils added actions and worked hard to learn the words from memory.

After all their practising they were very keen to perform it to their friends in the Upper School and, now that we are able to have assemblies together, they gave a fantastic performance on Tuesday.

Florence Nightingale Calls On Year 1

Year 1 took on the roles of nurses and soldiers when they met with the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale, during a special drama workshop with The Freshwater Theatre Company.  The classes are studying Florence in their History lessons and the workshop really helped to bring the topic alive.

Florence visited the school to tell the children all about her life. Starting with her childhood, her governess and her lessons and then onto her travels and her motivation to become a nurse. The children enjoyed engaging with drama activities such as role play and tableaux to explore her life.

Year 1 became nurses and travelled to the old Barrack Hospital in Scutari, her base during the Crimean War.  They then re-enacted life in hospital, improving the conditions by taking on tasks such as cleaning and caring for the soldiers. They also heard about the work of Mary Seacole who set up the British Hospital behind the lines in the war.

Mrs Symons commented, “The children were really impressed with Florence Nightingale, and enjoyed the practical hands-on experience of the session. They discovered lots about her life and her nursing legacy and came back to their classrooms enthused and excited and able to share lots of information.”

The children said "Florence Nightingale came to Crescent this week to tell Year 1 children all about her life.  We found out that she lived in Victorian times, she really wanted to be a nurse and she was excellent at cleaning hospitals. We loved it when some of us got to be nurses and bandage the injured soldiers".

WW2 Day

A flurry of evacuees arrived in school on Monday morning, all set for a morning of activities to bring to life the Second World War. The children looked every inch the part with their gas mask boxes and name labels.

We were joined virtually by George the WW2 ARP warden. He regaled us with details of life on the home front during the war and was able to show the children the different types of gas masks that were used. He went into detail about the types of bombs which were used and even had some fragments to show us. We discussed rationing and the children had great fun making their own WW2 carrot cookies which would have been made from the weekly rations. They tasted delicious!

The children really enjoyed being evacuees for the day but were very glad to be returning to their own homes at the end of the day.

Thank you to all of the parents for their excellent costumes and support of the day.

Year 4 WW2 History Project

Year 4 really embraced their World War Two homework project. The work they produced showed a range of historical skills including research and interviewing of people who experienced WW2 firsthand.

Many of the children were able to find out and present information about people in their own families who had been involved in the war and enjoyed sharing these stories with the class.

The creativity and level of detail in the projects shows the effort the children have put into their work and it makes a great display in school. Thanks to all the children and families for their efforts.

I think they will agree it was extremely interesting and linked together much of what we had been learning on our walks around Bilton.

Many thanks to the staff at the County Records Office.

School Promise

School Promise Rule Of The Week

For a two or three week period this year we will be focusing on one of the sayings in the School Promise. We will talk about this in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.

This week we are looking at the idea of being a calm and sensible pupil. The school council chose this one in the category of Good Learners as all children know that they learn best when they are focused in class and there is a determined, hardworking atmosphere.

Crescent School Podcast - Episode 3

Here is the latest episode of the school podcast, this one edited and produced entirely by Ro Somerset. It’s a little rough around the edges with some obvious areas for improvement (particularly the camera work!) but he has still done a really fantastic job, so please tell him well done when you see him!

We’ve had to delay the long awaited ‘teacher’s pets’ feature until next week due to Charlotte being off, so there’s still time if you want to get in on that one!

Stephanie, Katherine And Caspar Swim At Warwickshire Gala

Congratulations to Year 6 pupils, Stephanie, Katherine and Caspar who all gained qualifying times to swim at the Warwickshire Swimming Gala. The event took place over the last couple of weekends at the Alan Higgs Centre in Coventry. Stephanie swam in the 50m Freestyle, the 100m Freestyle and the 200m Freestyle, Katherine swam in the 50m Freestyle and the 50m Backstroke and Caspar swam in the 50m Freestyle.

It’s a fantastic achievement for these talented young swimmers, reached by determination, dedication, lots of hard work and time spent training.

We are very proud of them, well done to them all.

U9 Boys' Hockey Vs Crackley

On Thursday, storm Dudley could not blow away the U9 boys' excitement as they prepared for their final hockey match of this half term against Crackley Hall.

The A-team flew around the pitch like tornados, tackling strongly and confidently, preventing Crackley from leaving their half of the pitch, but they were unable to capitalize on this possession.

Their excellent play made the team talk a breeze with just a few pointers needed to improve. Eager to score the boys attacked swiftly and fantastic link up play between Oliver, Sam B and Alex T lead to a strong ball into the circle which was pounced on by Timi for the first goal.

The second came from quick reactions from Sam and lovely positioning from Shiv for a classy goal blasted into the net from the top of the circle. More goals followed as the pressure mounted with Remi, Edward G-H, Alex G and Albert preventing Crackley from making progress into Crescent's half.

A very impressive team performance with a final score of 5-0, with goals from Timi (x3), Sam B and Shiv.

Cross Country Round Up

Crescent 'sCross-Country team has been out in force competing in the first two Rugby and District races at Binley Woods School and Hart Field. A mixture of terrain; woodland, water and muddy slopes to contend with and strong winds have added to the excitement and challenge.

All pupils have done exceptionally well in a large field of over 100 runners in each race, with Evie finishing 5th and 7th in the two races and top 20 finishes from Katherine, Grace C and Ellie in this weeks race. Sophie, Eva, Sophia, Lara, Liana, Chloe, Harriet  and Stephanie all showed gusty and determined performances.

First boy home has been Sam M in each race, with Kai and Ro pushing each other and Caspar, Faris, Sachin and Aryan working well together and Charlie and Finlay putting in gritty performances

Well done to all involved. The final Rugby and District race is Wednesday 2 March at the Revel School.

COVID-19

Hoodies/Tracksuit Tops In School Reminder

One of our measures for controlling the coronavirus spread is keeping classrooms and corridors well ventilated with windows open where possible.  As a result, the children might well find the school colder than they are used to. For that reason, we would encourage all children to have additional layers available in school.

School fleeces, hoodies and tracksuit tops are ideal for the job whilst also looking smart.
