Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

This has been another super busy week here in school with Christmas nativity performances, the Carol Service, and Christmas parties all coming together to give the children many events and occasions to enjoy. To add to the mix there have been fixtures for hockey and football as well as a theatre trip for the Pre-Prep children. We are all looking forward to the weekend for something of a breather and to prepare ourselves for the final shortened week of the term next Monday and Tuesday.

We are delighted to have navigated a full programme of Christmas events this year despite the growing concerns around the Omicron variant. We haven't had any confirmed COVID cases here amongst the pupils this half term, which has played a big part in our ability to run these public gatherings. We will apply the same criteria next term to all of our events as we have done up to this point, keeping a very close eye on transmission rates both within the school community and in the local area.

We have a raft of additional measures we can put in place should circumstances require it and of course we will continue to keep you informed of any key changes we may need to bring in.

We continue to prioritise the academic and social progress of the children and parents in Reception, Years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 will receive their latest reports from the school along with the Courier this evening. I spend quite some time looking through these, giving me a clear idea of the children's progress and their relative strengths and weaknesses. I know we have said this before, but the teachers and staff here deserve enormous credit for maintaining standards over the last two years and making sure that your children receive the education you expect and they deserve.

I advise you to take the time to read the report with your child and talk through with them the targets that are in there, as well as lavishing them with the praise that they all deserve. The perception on the part of the children of a partnership between home and school is absolutely key, and we thank you for your continued support.

Another big success to celebrate last week was the Christmas bazaar, which was very well attended and enjoyed by all. I know we raised a significant amount of money through the return of this annual event so very well done to all involved.

With some milder weather forecast for the weekend I hope you are all able to get out and about with your children this weekend and that it isn’t too dominated by the dreaded Christmas shopping.

Please note that we will only be producing a mini version of the Courier next week with key details regarding the return to school on Wednesday 5 January.

MFL Arrangements

I wrote to you earlier in the term regarding the departure of our present French teacher Madame Tatton. We are now able to announce arrangements for the teaching of modern foreign languages for the remainder of the school year.

We undertook a rigorous recruitment process shortly before the half term break and we have now appointed Mrs Lucy Day to the post. Lucy is a highly experienced and skilful teacher of foreign languages to young people and comes to us with more than 20 years of experience. She has also lived and worked in France.

An additional skill that Lucy brings with her is her ability to teach Spanish. This will continue to play an important part in our language delivery, such that 2/3 of the year will be spent learning French and the remaining third will be devoted to Spanish.

Lucy however is not able to start with us until the summer term. Consequently, we have taken on the services of a modern foreign language specialist teaching agency to provide  teaching through to the summer term in accordance with our current timetable commitments. We do not know the identity of the teacher yet but are assured that he or she will be a primary trained expert who will provide consistent cover for the entirety of the term.

I know you will welcome Lucy onto the school teaching team when she arrives, and we continue to place the teaching of foreign languages very much as one of our key commitments to the children's education.

Crescent School Reception Class Full For September 2022 Entry

The Crescent School has filled all the places in its Reception Class for September 2022 entry in record time. The school, which has recently been rated ‘Excellent’ in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, has seen the demand for Reception places increasing year on year and is now operating a waiting group.

Joe Thackway, Headmaster, explains, “We are only able to offer one class of 20 pupils starting Reception in 2022 and, with a high number of siblings applicants, the class has been filled earlier than ever before. The school’s popularity has been on the increase for a while, and word of our success in keeping children on track and engaged in their lessons and home learning over the course of the pandemic seems to have only escalated interest.”

The school is already taking registrations for places in Reception and Year 3 starting in September 2023 and parents who are interested are encouraged to apply early. Some places are also available in the current Reception and Year 1 classes (Year 1 and 2 for September 2022 entry) as these year groups each have two classes. The next school Open Day is planned for Thursday 20 January and will be by appointment only. For further information please contact the Registrar, Helen Morley, on 01788 523851 or by email at admissions@crescentschool.co.uk.

Reception Nativity - Shine Star Shine

Our youngest children’s nativity took place on Monday 6 December, and we were delighted to welcome an excited audience of parents into school.

This year the children were performing Shine Star Shine, a truly magical retelling of the nativity story.

The big star has to show the way to the stable where a special baby has been born - but he just can't shine. How will the shepherds and kings find their way if they cannot follow the star? Fortunately, all the other stars are on hand, and they lead the big star to the stable where he sees Mary, Joseph and the beautiful baby. He realises that Jesus loves all the stars, angels and people of the world and this love gives the big star the strength to shine again.

With smiles on their faces, the children could be heard telling the big star, "Yes you can!" as they performed their lines confidently. They sang the songs clearly and beautifully, and there certainly were plenty of stars of the future on show!

Well done Reception you all shone so brightly – what a super show!

Key Stage 1 Nativity - A Midwife Crisis

Years 1 and 2 performed their charming nativity, A Midwife Crisis, to a delighted audience of parents on Wednesday 8 December. It was a modern take on the traditional nativity story and told of a very busy midwife and her put-upon donkey Steve.

Determined not to miss an important birth, she rushes out into the night in search of a shiny golden palace fit for a king. Steve doesn’t think he’s ever heard of Bethlehem Palace, but the midwife is in no mood to listen and off they go to look. On reaching Bethlehem, the townspeople, shepherds and kings that they come across have never heard of the palace either and the midwife starts to panic. However, with the help of some angelic angels and a very bright star, the midwife is led to a humble stable to find the very special baby already waiting for her.

It was a fabulous performance from all the children who delivered their lines with panache, danced exuberantly and sang enthusiastically. Headmaster, Joe Thackway, congratulated them all commenting, “Children you were absolutely fantastic.”  He thanked the staff involved in putting together the show and thanked the parents for coming.

Well done children, what a wonderful and uplifting nativity that was.

Princethorpe Chapel Hosts Crescent Carol Concert

The traditional school carol service took place on Thursday 9 December, in the glorious setting of Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Princethorpe College.

Parents were warmly welcomed to a wonderful evening of carols, readings and the re-telling of the Christmas story.

The traditional festive service did not disappoint, the orchestra played superbly and the voices of the choir sang out with much loved music that brought our community together to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas period.

It was a lovely celebration as we come towards the end of the Michaelmas term.

A Huge Thank You For The Year 6 donation

Thank you to our very kind benefactor who has donated a substantial amount of money for an end of term treat, it is extremely kind of you.

As you can understand, I cannot organise it for this term but by the time Year 6 leave we will make sure they have a treat that will be memorable.

Merry Christmas and thank you again for your generosity.

Crescent School Community Foodbank And Salvation Army Donations

Huge thanks to our wonderful Crescent parents and pupils from the Food Bank team who were absolutely thrilled and very grateful for the huge boot-full of treats and goodies donated by the community. They were just starting the hamper bundling so were delighted to have lots of lovely Christmas extras just in time! Our thanks to Mrs Hosegood for doing the delivery.

Then we also had a visit from Major Anne Myers of the Salvation Army to collect the toy donations. She was extremely pleased and explained what a difference it will make to children who have little or nothing to open on Christmas Day. Thanks go to Ms Blair for organising this collection.

Pictured are Iris, Evelyn, Ava, Niamh and Charlotte who were all excellent ‘trainee elf’ helpers.

The Christmas spirit is alive and well in our Crescent community!

Goodbye Ms Hunte

At the end of the term we say goodbye to our After-School Manager Ms Beverley Hunte, who has run our after-school offering here for the last 12 months. Beverley leaves with our thanks and very best wishes following a period of considerable change in the after-school department which has included bubbles, lockdown and a move to a new home in the Horton Centre.

Moving forward, we are fortunate to have a number of excellent practitioners employed in this area of our provision and I am looking to supplement the team further in the new year.

Christmas Jumper Day And Games At Pupil Entrance

Tuesday 14 December 2021

Our Christmas Jumper Day this year will be on Tuesday 14 December 2021. On that day, children should wear normal school uniform, but instead of their green pullover/cardigan, they can wear a Christmas jumper, if they wish.

School Council have also arranged some Chritmas-inspired games to play on the way in to school, and all proceeds will go to our term's charity, Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve.

Please bring in £1 to wear a festive jumper, and games will be 50p a go.

Crescent School Open Day For Prospective Parents

Thursday 20 January 2022 - 10.00am to 3.00pm

Please share news of our next Open Day in January. It is a great opportunity to hear from the Headmaster, Joe Thackway, look around the school and to meet staff and pupils on a normal working day.

The day will give prospective families an insight into life at the Crescent and the firm foundation we give children for their future learning.

The day will be by appointment only and will be split into three sessions. To book your place please click here

For more information please contact the Registrar, Mrs Helen Morley on 01788 523851 or by email admissions@crescentschool.co.uk.

Please note:

We have had very high levels of interest in places for Reception and our Year 3 class for September 2022 entry at the Early Bird Application deadline stage. Many of these applications were from families with siblings already in the school. As a result, we have already allocated all of the available places in these year groups for September 2022. We are now operating waiting groups in these year groups for families who are still interested in a place, should a suitable one become available.

We are currently operating waiting groups in most other years apart from our current Reception and Year 1 classes (Year 1 and 2 for September 2022 entry) where we do have some places available as these year groups each have two classes.

We are already taking registrations for places in Reception and Year 3 starting September 2023. It would be helpful for us to know as soon as possible if current Crescent families have a child who will be of Reception age in September 2023 and if you are likely to be interested in a place for them.

James And The Giant Peach Theatre Trip

Our James and the Giant Peach show was amazing. They did a great performance and they had a good set. I just think it was awesome.

It started with a boy called James who went to live far away from his old home with some unkind Aunts. Their names were Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. Then, magically, James was taken to a world of enormous insects and they lived inside a giant peach. One day the peach fell into the sea but James had an idea to save them all and he was right.

Year 6 Holiday Reading

Next term our Englsh learning in Class 6W is based around the book Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling, I realise many of the class have read the book but those that haven't will benefit from reading it or listening to it over the holidays in readiness for next term.

They have been given a book to bring home.

Accelerated Reading Quizzing Over The Christmas Holidays

It is so important that all children keep up their reading over the holidays and continue the habit of reading every day.

The last day for quizzing is Tuesday 14 December and it will resume on the first day of term. I do recommend that the children only quiz on one book when they return as it is not a memory test.

School Promise

School Promise Rule Of The Week

For a two or three week period this year we will be focusing on one of the sayings in the new School Promise. We will talk about this in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.

This week we consider the category of Good Learners. The idea behind this week’s promise is resilience and perseverance. This is such a key element of being a good learner. The desire and determination to master new skills can take children such a long way in education.

U9 Hockey - Crescent Crack It At Kingsley

After a fun but long, journey to Warwick, Crescent U9 Girls quickly warmed up and collected themselves together for the start of the game.

Kingsley won the first push back and Crescent got themselves ready and in to position.  Roisin was quick off the whistle and soon closed down the Kingsley pass, taking control of the ball with Sofie moving up the wing for her to pass to.

Crescent continued to dominate the first half of the match with Roisin crossing the ball into Maggie who was ready in the D to score the first goal.

In the second half Crescent went out strong from their push back with Grace holding position up front, Sofie quickly pushing forward to receive the pass, before hitting back into Grace who had moved closer to the D. Grace worked her way past the Kingsley defence to pass to Roisin who was ready to strike to score goal 2.

Further attempts on goal came from Leela, Shayla, Grace, Maisie and Sofie who narrowly hit the ball wide. Alice, Hattie and Emily were able to push forward and blocked any attempt of Kingsley getting into their attacking D with solid tackles.

Final score 2-0 Crescent

  • Player Of The Match – Sofie
  • Most Determined Player – Shayla

U10 And U11 Girl's Hockey v Kingsley

The U10A and U11A Girls hockey teams braved the cold winds to take on Kingsley School at Rugby College on Wednesday.

U11A Report

The U11's got off to a fantastic start closing the ball down and gaining possession quickly from a Kingsley push back to make a fantastic attacking drive towards the D which was soon converted in to our first goal. Great teamwork between Katherine, Eva, Sophia, Rosina and Stephanie saw Crescent dominate the ball with Chloe and Charlotte being able to push forward in defence and press the ball to ensure it stayed in the Crescent half.

The half time score was 4-1. The second half was no different with Crescent using the width to make use of space down the wing for some cracking crosses into the D for Rosina on Stephanie to capitalise on. Sophie did a cracking job in goal, kicking away and clearing any shots that did make it in to the D in the second half. Final score was 8-1 with goals from Stephanie, Rosina, Katherine and Eva.

Player Of The Match was awarded by Kingsley to Eva and Most Determined Player to Charlotte, whose composure and timing in defence was faultless.

A great game with fantastic teamwork and sporting values showed by all.

Mrs McCollin
Head of PE and Games

U10A Report

The girls made an impressive start, winning the ball quickly and Ellie glided into the D unchallenged, clinically slotting the ball away within a minute of the starting whistle. Another goal followed rapidly afterwards. The midfield of Bella, Ellie, Esme and Mya proved tough for Kingsley to break through, and their speed of attack and tenacity led to more goals from Crescent before half time. Grace M sneaking in front of the keeper to connect with a cross from Ellie being one of the many highlights. The defensive work of Zara and Chloe had more work to do in the second half, both making some great tackles and clearing the ball well. It was clear that the girls had listened during the team talk and were linking up brilliantly, with confident passes and more accurate shots on target. A special mention must go to Ava who donned the goalie kit and never looked like it was her first match in goal, confidently attacking any ball that came her way. Ellie scored 8 goals, Grace M, 2 and Esme 1.

Final result was 11-1. Bella was awarded Player Of The Match by the opposition. A brilliant team effort and a very impressive score line.

Well done all.

Football Round Up

Wednesday 1 December 2021:
Crescent U10s 5 - 0 Crackley U10s
U10A Football team braved the cold wind and rain at Crackley Hall on for a 5-0 victory.

All of the team played fantastically getting fully involved, pressing the ball and attacking well. Great teamwork, fancy footwork, accurate passing, meeting the ball and reading the game well.  Great effort by all involved.

Player of Match awarded to Sam M by Crackley Hall.

Wednesday 8 December 2021:
Crescent U10s  2  -  4  Crackley U10s
Crescent U10s were very unlucky to come out on the wrong side of an end-to-end, exciting game that was far closer than the score line suggests. Crackley took the lead early through a well worked corner, but Crescent hit back on the attack immediately, Grace coming very close a couple of times before Fin found the net with an excellent finish. Crackley scored again just before the break, leaving it 2-1 at the change of ends. Once again Crescent fought hard for the equaliser, this time Sam finishing off a fantastic solo effort. Crackley made it 3-2 shortly after with a good team goal, and this time Crescent couldn’t find a goal in reply, despite hitting the side netting twice. In the dying seconds Crescent were caught out at the back trying to push forwards, Crackley netting again to leave it 4 – 2 to the away side.

Man of the match went to Charlie Millward for a fantastic display in goal.

Crescent U11s  0  -  2   Crackley U11s
Crescent were soundly beaten by a strong Crackley side this week and came out determined to make amends in the home leg. They certainly started the stronger side, completely dominating the first half, but unfortunately just unable to find the back of the net, both Aryan and Kai coming extremely close. Crackley had a reshuffle at half-time and were able to bag a goal against the run of play, somehow finding a way through the rock-solid Crescent defence. Crescent then missed several key chances for an equaliser, including a strong penalty shout, before Crackley sealed victory with the final kick of the game, a great save from Ro in goal unluckily falling straight to the Crackley striker.

Man of the match goes to James Ashton for a superb defensive display at the back.

"Fred has recently been diagnosed with autism and ADHD.  I was telling him about a child in a local children’s home (where a lady in our village works), who has the same diagnosis and also loves Lego, just like Fred!  Fred learnt that this little boy didn't have any Lego of his own, so Fred decided to give him two Lego sets, a box of K’Nex and a pile of Lego magazines of his own. Fred loves Lego more than anything so we were very proud of him in choosing to give some of his own away.

We delivered them to the lady who works at the children’s home and she was over the moon with Fred’s kindness. She said it will make a really big difference to this child to have some of his own toys."

Well done Fred that is very kind.

Test To Release For Foundation Siblings

Dear Crescent Parents

Over the course of this term, we have had four positive COVID-19 cases here at school. The situation at Princethorpe College is also serious with a number of positive cases being reported since the beginning of term.

Following a visit to Princethorpe College from PHE advisers, we been asked to introduce a ‘test to release’ recommendation for siblings across the three Foundation schools. This is designed to manage the number of Covid cases and hopefully reduce new cases.

Effectively, this means that if someone in a household tests positive, this would require siblings and other relations to take a PCR test and only return to school when they have received a negative PCR result. For example, if a child in Year 7 at Princethorpe tests positive and has a sibling in Crescent Year 4, the Year 4 child would need to take a PCR test and receive a negative result before returning to school. Similarly, if a child in Crescent Year 3 were to test positive and had a sibling in Year 8, the Year 8 pupil would need to take the test.

In the meantime, the most important thing I can ask you to do is to is to continue to monitor your children for Covid symptoms. Do not send children into school when they are unwell or exhibit any of the signs of Covid. If they do develop symptoms, please book them a PCR test.

Please be assured that we will do our utmost to keep day to day school life, both in and out of the classroom, as normal as possible for our pupils.

Hoodies/Tracksuit Tops In School Reminder

One of our measures for controlling the coronavirus spread is keeping classrooms and corridors well ventilated with windows open where possible.  As a result, the children might well find the school colder than they are used to, particularly as we head into winter. For that reason, we would encourage all children to have additional layers available in school.

School fleeces, hoodies and tracksuit tops are ideal for the job whilst also looking smart.

COVID Management Update

We continue to monitor the number of COVID cases in the school and in the local area closely. We have different options open to us to reduce contact, both in school and for external events, should cases increase rapidly.

Currently, case numbers in the school are very low and we haven't had any positive test results this half term, but we will continue to communicate clearly with parents and children if our risk assessment changes.
