Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

I hope you have all enjoyed productive weeks at work and at home. That has very much been the case here at school, with plenty of hard work and focus as the children navigate their way through the long term, always seeking to improve and develop and take pride in their progress. I have struggled personally with a rotten cough (not COVID, but not nice), but I am thankfully, I think, on the road to recovery.

Many thanks to all those parents who have written in expressing congratulations following our ISI report. I don’t intend to keep referring back to this constantly, it can never be a reason for complacency, but it is lovely to get such supportive messages. We are already hard at work planning for the terms and years ahead, just as you would expect us to do. The co-curricular clubs list will be with you very soon and work on next term’s calendar is already well advanced. At the same time, plenty of hard work is going into writing reports and assessments for the children, which will be available to R-Y5 parents before the end of this term.

The eco-theme of recent assemblies continued on Tuesday, when the Green Club told us all about their carbon footprints and gave us lots of good ideas on how to save energy in the home and in school. Many thanks to Mrs Johnson for organising this informative assembly and it’s all part of a learning process for us and the children.

I asked the children this morning if they had remembered to turn electrical items off during the week and a sea of hands went up immediately. We did warn them not to turn off switches without asking, of course, we don't want your fridge at home to die suddenly or important Zoom meetings to be rudely interrupted. I myself made the pledge to make sure my computer is turned off each night when I leave my office, having learnt from the children that this will save enough CO2 to fill a double decker bus from being released into the atmosphere over the period of a year.

Have a great weekend.

Year 6 Enjoy Foundation Music Workshop

On Tuesday 16 November, Year 6 visited Crackley Hall School for a fantastic, full day of uplifting and inspiring music. The pupils from both schools worked together under the guidance of Directors of Music, Susan Olden and Julie Barnes, rehearsing, performing, and improvising a mix of vocal and orchestra pieces.

Mrs Olden and Mrs Barnes both agreed that the joint musical initiative had been another very successful day, remarking that, “It is so good to work together, everyone really enjoys themselves, it’s always one of the highlights of the term.”

In the morning, pupils worked on vocal pieces that included the traditional Monday’s Child, that they enjoyed singing alongside professional singing teacher, soprano, Shoshana Stokes. They also had great fun singing Abba’s upbeat Money Money Money with its catchy refrain.

In the afternoon, the pupils worked with their instruments, improvising to Hans Zimmer’s Earth, working together to develop their own stirring and emotive piece. The two orchestras co-operating and complementing each other to deliver an electrifying performance.

Julie Barnes, Director of Music at the Crescent School, continued, “Both schools have such a strong musical tradition, and the children really rise to the occasion, it is great to go over and work together.”

Susan Olden, Director of Music at Crackley Hall, added, “There is real talent within our schools and our music workshops always inspire our pupils.”

The Junior Schools Music Workshops are just one of the many performance opportunities that pupils at the schools take part in.

Old Crescentians Enjoy Tour Of New Horton Centre

It was a real pleasure to welcome back a group of Old Crescentians to the Crescent on Friday 12 November to tour the latest addition to the school’s facilities, the new Horton Centre.

This was the first opportunity for OCs to visit the school since the start of the pandemic and was much appreciated by all.

The group of mainly former staff enjoyed some welcome refreshments with current staff before taking in the new facilities. What was once the old nursery building now includes a new teaching room, break out learning spaces, dedicated Music and Drama rooms and space for the school’s After Care Club. Linked by a new corridor, the fully refurbished block makes a perfect addition to the school’s growing needs.

Following their visit to the Horton Centre the group were keen to take a look around the rest of the site. There was plenty of reminiscing, catching up and admiration for the recent developments at the school, including the news of its recent ‘Excellent in all areas’ ISI Inspection.

Present were former Headmaster, Huw Marshall and his wife Magda who had travelled up from Wales, former teachers Anne Boys, Sandra Clayton, Patricia Davis, Clare Gove, Susan Haynes, former nursery manager, Carolyn McGrellis and former parent, Sarah Channing,

Comments, Joe Thackway, Headmaster, “It was great to get the OCs seal of approval on all that has been happening at the Crescent over the past year or so.  We hope they enjoyed their visit and we very much look forward to our next OCs event.”

The Magician's Elephant 5F and 6W

What a treat we had last week. We have not been to the theatre as a school for two years, so we were so lucky to be able to see the new production of The Magician's Elephant at the RSC. The children were all very excited and immaculately behaved.

Please take the time to read the children's reviews as they will give you an insight into our wonderful theatre visit.

Nativity Performance For Reception

Monday 6 December 2021 - 9.30am to 10.05am

Parents and Grandparents are invited to our Reception Classes Nativity performance of Shine Star Shine.

A lot of hard work has gone into the rehearsals so far, learning the songs, memorising lines, sorting out costumes, scenery and planning the production, and what a spectacle it is all going to be.

Before the performance the staff and children will be busy getting things ready in the hall and I would ask parents to please wait in the Library where there will be tea, coffee and some light refreshments served.

Due to the current situation, we are able to offer each family two tickets for the performance. The performance will be filmed and a link to the recording will be circulated after.

A link will be sent out next week to book your tickets via My School Portal.

Class 4M's Super Similes!

This week we have been looking at imagery in poetry and the techniques which poets use to bring their words to life. A brilliant way of doing this is by using similes, and everyone in the class created one of their own to contribute to a class simile poem.

There were some fabulous examples, and they now have pride of place on our classroom wall.

Well done, 4M!

Green Club Switch Off Fortnight

The Green Club launched the 'Switch off Fortnight' campaign in assembly this Tuesday.

This is a national campaign, with over 1000 schools taking part, to try to reduce the use of electricity to save energy and help to stop climate change.

In the next two weeks they want to encourage the children to save electricity in school and at home.

Green Club are not asking everyone to ‘never turn the lights on’ or ‘to be in the dark all the time’ or ‘to have cold showers’ but they are asking pupils to think how they can personally save electricity.

School Promise

School Promise Rule Of The Week

For a two or three week period this year we will be focusing on one of the sayings in the new School Promise. We will talk about this in assembly and in form period.

This week we are back to the category of Good Friends and the idea of forgiveness and working things out. We all know that children don’t always get things right in their friendships and this can end up in upset and worry. Being able to say ‘sorry’ and ‘that’s okay’ can make all the difference.

Please support this message at home with your children.

‘We forgive each other and work things out together’

E-Safety - Call of Duty

I am sure at some point you will have heard of Call of Duty (or CoD as it is often referred to) and with a brand new game due out in time for Christmas, it is undeniably one of the most successful gaming franchises of all time, especially with children.

It does however have a strict PEGI 18+ age restriction, and for some very good reasons! The most obvious of these is the huge amount of very realistic violence and gore in the game, which really cannot be emphasised enough, is not for the faint-hearted! The game also contains a number of very adult and disturbing themes, such as terrorism, torture and the use of chemical weapons to name but a few. The online multiplayer mode has also come under a lot of flack in the past for its use of foul language and ‘bullying’ of other players by strangers. Click here to read a detailed PDF guide that outlines all of this in further detail… but the bottom line is that this really is NOT A GAME FOR CHILDREN and should not be played under any circumstances until they are adults in their own right.

Another risk to watch out for is children’s exposure to the game through watching older siblings play, or more commonly by watching the millions upon millions of videos of others playing the game on Youtube. As I am sure you already do, please keep a careful look out for any videos being viewed on video sharing sites, as ‘computer game violence’ and ‘cartoon violence’ can often sneak through age filters.

If you have any further questions, about this or any other e-safety aspects, please do not hesitate to contact me.

A huge well done to green-fingered Grace – you are excellent inspiration for us all!

COVID-19

Test To Release For Foundation Siblings

Dear Crescent Parents

Over the course of this term, we have had four positive COVID-19 cases here at school. The situation at Princethorpe College is also serious with a number of positive cases being reported since the beginning of term.

Following a visit to Princethorpe College from PHE advisers, we been asked to introduce a ‘test to release’ recommendation for siblings across the three Foundation schools. This is designed to manage the number of Covid cases and hopefully reduce new cases.

Effectively, this means that if someone in a household tests positive, this would require siblings and other relations to take a PCR test and only return to school when they have received a negative PCR result. For example, if a child in Year 7 at Princethorpe tests positive and has a sibling in Crescent Year 4, the Year 4 child would need to take a PCR test and receive a negative result before returning to school. Similarly, if a child in Crescent Year 3 were to test positive and had a sibling in Year 8, the Year 8 pupil would need to take the test.

In the meantime, the most important thing I can ask you to do is to is to continue to monitor your children for Covid symptoms. Do not send children into school when they are unwell or exhibit any of the signs of Covid. If they do develop symptoms, please book them a PCR test.

Please be assured that we will do our utmost to keep day to day school life, both in and out of the classroom, as normal as possible for our pupils.

Hoodies/Tracksuit Tops In School Reminder

One of our measures for controlling the coronavirus spread is keeping classrooms and corridors well ventilated with windows open where possible.  As a result, the children might well find the school colder than they are used to, particularly as we head into winter. For that reason, we would encourage all children to have additional layers available in school.

School fleeces, hoodies and tracksuit tops are ideal for the job whilst also looking smart.

Joe Thackway
Headmaster
