Welcome to The Courier, Crescent School's electronic newsletter.

It was a busy day in school today with the FoC Macmillan Coffee morning, Individual and Sibling photos and then the Year 6 cake sale afterschool and I am sure you won't be surprised to hear there were plenty of smiling faces at breaktime too.

Lots of lovely articles to read this week, the children have been making Periscopes, been history detectives and had lots of sporting success outside of school.

Our cover photo is of the Kindness Heart Wall, you can read about it here.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

I write to you today from sunny Bournemouth, as I have spent the last three days here on the annuaI IAPS conference. This is a great opportunity for me to get a bit of strategic thinking time and keep up to date with all of the latest trends and moves in educational provision. There have been lots of fascinating presentations over the last couple of days that have really made me think about how we teach, how the children learn and how we can continuously seek to improve in both of these important areas.

The conference was started by a now retired head teacher by the name of James Shone. James suffered a brain tumour just as he was taking up his very first post as a head, with a young family in tow. He had to give up his new post and battle through a long and painful rehabilitation, that continues to this day. Alongside his own inspirational story of recovery and resilience, his main focus was on how children perform at their best when they feel enabled and emboldened to take on life’s challenges. His analogy for this was ‘Inflating the balloon of self-belief’. What are the key ingredients for achieving this? James identified four key pillars; a sense of belonging, a growth mindset, recognising where your talents lie and ultimately, in a sense of hope. James now runs a charity called ‘I Can and I Am’, with the aim of inspiring confidence and self-belief in all young people. This is something I think we can all relate to when we think of our own children and how to enable them to achieve their very best.

I have been keeping in touch with everyone at school as best I can, but I will be relying more than usual on this edition of the Courier to keep me fully informed of all of the children’s wonderful exploits in the week gone by.

I look forward to being back in school on Monday and hope that in the meantime you all enjoy your weekends.

As we approach Harvest Festival, we do so with a thankful heart for all that we have.

Once again, we shall be supporting the valuable work of the Rugby Foodbank by asking families to donate non-perishable items to help many who are struggling at this time. Rugby Foodbank has kindly sent us a 'wish list' of items they would welcome for the coming weeks and months ahead to boost their stocks over the winter.:

Foodbank - Harvest Festival Shopping List 2021:

  • Tinned potatoes
  • Tinned meat/pies/hot dogs
  • Tinned fish
  • Tinned/Packet snack meals
  • Packet mashed potato
  • Tinned custard
  • Tinned fruit
  • Coffee
  • Pot noodles
  • Instant noodles
  • Jam
  • Spreads
  • Washing up liquid
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorants
  • Men's toiletries

We are asking that all donations be brought in on Monday 11 October, to the pupil entrance, where representatives of the School Council will receive your donations and bring them into school ready for our Harvest Services that week.

Many thanks in advance for your continued support of this local cause.

Xmas4schools Christmas Cards

Again we are purchasing our fundraising Christmas cards from a Xmas4schools. Please look out for your child bringing home an order card that has the ordering details on one side and the actual space where the design must be on the other.

Please fill in details and keep to the class name as RP, RE, 1LS, 1SS 2W, 3Y, 4M, 5F or 6W. Also, there is a price guide as to what products you will also be able to buy when the design is complete.

The design guidelines are:

  • Do not go too near the edge as the printer will cut it off- you must be 1cm away all around.
  • Do use felt tip, ink, pencil crayons, gel pens - brighter the better- pale does not show up.
  • Do use collage if you want - but well stuck down.
  • Do use glitter glue if you want.
  • Do not use sprinkle glitter- it falls off!
  • Do not use large areas of metallic finishes- it will not look shiny.
  • Do cover up as much of the white space as you can.
  • Do make any text big as the process will reduce the size of the design.

The design card with details, must be returned as soon as possible. The deadline is Tuesday 5 October 2021. We cannot accept or send any late orders after this date.

FoC will receive a donation for every product ordered, so do get designing! Please note that this is not the Crescent School Christmas card competition, but items just for yourselves.

Please click on the photos in the gallery which provide information.

Accelerated Reading Book Suggestions - Year 3 to Year 6

This week suggested author and book titles have appeared on our Accelerated Reader notice board.

If you struggle knowing what to read next feel free to help yourself.

These lists are designed to help you to recognise different authors who’s works you might want to explore.

All children at Crescent are encouraged to read a little every day, to try new authors alongside reading some classics and to experiment with different genres.

These lists are by no means exhaustive, always feel free to ask your friends or our Librarians for recommendations too!

Kindles Or Other E-Readers In School

Kindles or other e-readers are allowed in school from Year 3 for the children to read from. It is important that reading is as accessible as possible for children and often books are cheaper online. The children really only need to be reading one book rather than having a school book and a home book, one book can do both jobs and will save on confusion for the child.

If you decide that your child can bring their Kindle or other e-reader in, then it is to be used for reading ONLY. There will be no internet access. If a child is found using it inappropriately then parents will be informed. The Kindle will be the child's responsibility and any breakages are not our responsibility.

Please be reassured there are more than enough books in school for your child to enjoy and there is no necessity for your child to have a Kindle or e-reader, it is just a different way to access books if you wish to.

Harvest Service

Tuesday 12 October and Wednesday 13 October 2021

This year we are very excited to be holding two Harvest Festivals, one for Pre-Prep on Wednesday 13 October and one for Upper School (Year 3-6) on Tuesday 12 October - this is slightly different to what was in the calendar. These will both start at 9am but you will be welcome after drop off for a light refreshment before the service in the library.

I am afraid we are asking that only one adult per child attends due to safety and space in the hall. We will also request that your wear a mask when in the hall during the service and when not eating or drinking.

The service will be less than an hour and will be a mixture of songs, readings, music and prayers to celebrate the Harvest.

Please note that all events are subject to change, we risk assess all events and activities in line with Covid risks and numbers. We will communicate with parents as soon as any decisions have been made.

Kindness Heart

Every child in school has had the chance to colour in a heart and contribute to what they think kindness is. The first line of our School Promise is that 'We are kind to each other', and as you can see, they have come up with so many ideas of showing kindness to our friends and in our school community.

Around The Classes

Class 1LS Explore 'Oy' Sounds

This week 1LS have been learning and using the -oy sound in their phonics learning. They have been reading a story about Kit and Sam going on a royal visit to Buckingham Palace. The children worked hard to find -oy words in sentences, and then matched the correct sentences to the pictures to tell the story. They were great at it!

Class 2W are History Detectives

Class 2W have started the year by learning about the heroine, Grace Darling, who bravely rescued a group of shipwrecked people off the north-east coast, near Bamburgh. They have been looking at different pictures, portraits, and images of Grace during the rescue, and asking questions.

  • Was her father with her or was she alone?
  • Did she have one oar or two?
  • Did her father row the boat, or did she?

The children enjoyed re-creating the possibilities and miming the rescue. They are learning how historians must look at different sources of evidence to piece together the events of the past.

We will continue our Grace Darling topic by looking at how word spread of her heroic act, and what it meant to have national fame in 1838.

Well done, 2W!

Class 4M Marvellous Maths

Class 4M have worked hard this week on their numbers, exploring 4-digit numbers and practising adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers mentally. They finished off the week with a session in our ICT room, doing the 'Smack the Shack' game on Abacus to consolidate their learning.

The Abacus platform is fantastic for practising their skills, and as the pictures show, the children really enjoy using it.

Well done, 4M!

Class 6W History

We are studying the Ancient Greeks this term. We asked the question - how can we know so much about the past? By looking at a Myth we realised how much could remain as a clue about the past.  We then looked around the room at individual clues to see if we could work out which were the most reliable.

Class 6W Blue House Playleader Training

Class 6W Blue House pupils had a great day last Friday learning about the art of leadership. Pupils looked at a number of inspirational leaders, analysed the key attributes that strong leaders have and then thought deeply about the characteristics they possess and those they may need to develop further.

We worked on communication skills, both verbal and non verbal, to understand the importance of clear and concise instructions and learned how important it is to plan ahead and be prepared, and to have a Plan B.  Pupils then had a go at leading their peers through a variety of different warm-up activities and fun games before creating their own exercises to explain and lead.

I was extremely impressed with the wonderful ideas the pupils had on how to develop play time and lunchtimes to make them fun on the playground.  St Andrews, it was a pleasure to spend the day with you.

Parental Controls For Smart Phones

Smart phones really are incredible devices, and I’m sure you would agree, most of us would now feel completely lost without them! Whether your child is coming to the age of owning their own smart phone, or just enjoys borrowing yours for a quick game, they are fantastically versatile and fun…but do not come without their dangers.

Downloading a new app or game is so quick and straightforward that, whenever a young person uses a smartphone (either their own or a parent’s) there’s always the possibility that they could expose themselves to inappropriate content (such as games with violent scenes or apps with adult themes) simply by sheer accident or, more likely, through youthful curiosity.

Fortunately, the parental controls you’ll find on most smartphones are an excellent way of minimising this possibility. They don’t completely remove the element of risk – but they do limit it considerably. Please take a look at the attached guides to steer you through the process of setting up this useful protection on iPhone and Android smartphones.

If you have any further concerns or need any advice, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

U10 Football Tournament At Princethorpe

On Monday after school Crescent School took part in Princethorpe’s Primary Schools’ U10 Football Tournament. This year only four teams were playing so Crescent played each team in turn in a ten minute each-way match. It was lovely to get out in the glorious autumn sunshine and the children really enjoyed playing football on the College’s playing fields. It was a great afternoon of sport and thanks to all the parents who turned up to support.

Hello From The FoC

It’s great to be back and we’re all really excited about the forthcoming school year. Over the next few weeks we’ve got some great events lined up: Active October (03/10) and a Quiz Night (15/10).

We have a larger fundraiser running this year called 'Crescent Adventure’, which will provide a safe outdoor play area with a wide range of outdoor equipment designed to engage and challenge children physically on the school site. It will help to develop children’s confidence in movement and support better peer relationships while developing a lifelong passion for physical activity. Most funds raised this year will go towards this project. More details to come soon.

The next FoC meeting is on 1 November after which your class rep will feedback to you.

After School - Collection Of Children From After-School In The Horton Centre

Important Information For Parents

From the beginning of term our after-school provision will be based at the newly refurbished Horton Centre. This provides an excellent location for this facility and will enable children to complete homework and reading assignments in a peaceful and calm area of the school. We also now have two double doors that lead directly from the after-school room to the playground which can be used later in the afternoon when homework has been completed.

We had planned to install an electronically controlled entrance gate next to the car park that will allow parents to be buzzed through, using an intercom and camera system. However, there have been some problems with the manufacture of this new door and hence this is not yet in place and is unlikely to be installed before the end of this month.

For that reason, we are introducing a temporary system for collection from after school that will run as follows:

  • Parents or guardians who want to collect their child should go to the side gate next to the field
  • Parents should then call the after-school number 07467 488440 on their mobile phone. This number will also be on the parent notice board
  • Your child will then be brought to you at the gate for safe hand over

This system will ensure that all of the children are kept safely within the school site at all times and only handed over to parents or guardians when closely supervised by a responsible adult. As soon as the new gate is installed, I will communicate with parents again to clearly outline the new procedures that we will put in place at that point.

COVID-19

Test to Release For Foundation Siblings

Dear Crescent Parents

Over the course of the last week, we have had two positive COVID-19 cases here at school. The situation at Princethorpe College is also serious with a number of positive cases being reported since the beginning of term.

Following a visit to Princethorpe College from PHE advisers, we been asked to introduce a ‘test to release’ recommendation for siblings across the three Foundation schools. This is designed to manage the number of Covid cases and hopefully reduce new cases.

Effectively, this means that if someone in a household tests positive, this would require siblings and other relations to take a PCR test and only return to school when they have received a negative PCR result. For example, if a child in Year 7 at Princethorpe tests positive and has a sibling in Crescent Year 4, the Year 4 child would need to take a PCR test and receive a negative result before returning to school. Similarly, a child in Crescent Year 3 were to test positive and had a sibling in Year 8, the Year 8 pupil would need to take the test.

In the meantime, the most important thing I can ask you to do is to is to continue to monitor your children for Covid symptoms. Do not send children into school when they are unwell or exhibit any of the signs of Covid. If they do develop symptoms, please book them a PCR test.

In the meantime, please be assured that we will do our utmost to keep day to day school life, both in and out of the classroom, as normal as possible for our pupils.
