Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

After an enormous hailstorm on Wednesday lunchtime put paid to the Year 5 and 6 netball fixture, we finally had our first competitive fixture in more than a year on Thursday this week. Girls in Year 3 and 4 provided a friendly welcome to their guests from Crackley Hall and it was great to see the raw enthusiasm of all the children involved. It felt like a genuine leap forward and the return of a much-loved part of school life.

It was without doubt the highlight of my week to see the children playing with such great energy and combining this with a genuine joy in being back playing competitive sports. The girls from both schools played with a real sense of sportsmanship and everyone who had the privilege of watching, (let’s hope we can have parent spectators back in really soon) went away with a feeling of genuine satisfaction.

With a cross country fixture planned for next week and football, rounders and athletics to come later in the term, the sports future is looking a lot brighter.

We had some fun earlier in the week in assembly when we talked about good table manners as part of our School Promise. We shared important messages about not using fingers but using cutlery, as well as sharing nicely at the table and waiting patiently in the queue. We took some fun photos of good and bad lunchroom behaviour (they all wanted to have a go at acting for the ‘naughty’ ones). The children responded in good humour and it has been great to see a real improvement in lunchtime etiquette as the week has gone by.

On another note, I have had some important meetings this week regarding the future plans for the nursery building. I will be able to share more with you in the coming weeks when we hope to get the official green light for planning permission, but I am able to say already that progress looks very positive and we hope to unveil the new name for the building and more details in the very near future.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Best wishes

Joe Thackway

Formal Assessments

Year 6 have completed all their final assessments for the year in preparation for Year 7 transition meetings with their new secondary schools. Over the next two weeks, it is the turn of 5F then 4M and 3Y to take online tests in maths, science, spelling and English as well as extended writing on paper.

These tests are important for us to know where pupils are achieving against national expectations. They are particularly important to Year 5 as these are the scores that will go on any application forms that they may complete next term.

All scores will be shared with parents in the final reports.

Good luck to all the pupils involved.

Learning Mentoring Partnerships

'Learning Mentoring Meetings' are now scheduled for Friday 21 May (this is a change to the published date of Friday 14 May). This is an idea that we implemented in the Michaelmas Term as part of our whole school target, 'To embed self-regulation to achieve high performance.'

Children will meet with the same member of staff and review the academic targets they set for themselves at the beginning of the year. Children have been reviewing their targets throughout the year; this meeting was delayed from Lent Term during Lockdown. They have their targets on a postcard and will record their self-assessment on those; some children may set new targets until the end of the year.

This initiative is to give responsibility for their learning to our children from Year 1 to Year 6. Staff will not be telling them if they feel they have achieved their targets, but will only guide pupils through their books, feedback, comments, and last reports for the children to decide if they have.  We are pleased to give the children this empowerment and responsibility to strive to achieve their own set goals.

Crescent Out In Force At The Local Junior Parkrun

Crescent School children were out in force last Sunday for the recently restarted Junior Parkrun.  It was wonderful to see children from across the school taking part including Lucas and Joshua from Reception, Lewis and Zac from Year 2, Sam B, Maisie, Roisin, Alex T, Alex G and Hattie from Year 3 and Evie from Year 5. If we didn’t spot you and name check you then do let us know!

There was plenty of friendly rivalry, especially between siblings, and lots of the children gained personal bests but what was particularly wonderful though was seeing how all the Crescent children supported each other, cheering their schoolmates on and encouraging everyone, living up to the Junior Parkrun’s motto ‘It’s a run not a race’.

A super huge well done to them all!

Due to COVID restrictions the event is currently only open to children aged 4 to 10 years old.

Class 3Y More Pen Licences Awarded

It is always an exciting time for the children when they gain their pen licence, enabling them to make the move from writing in pencil to pen.

For this rite of passage, the children have to show that they can write neatly and consistently in cursive, joined handwriting in all of their work, not just handwriting tasks.

Darius, Edward F, James, Leela, Maggie and Sofie have shown pride in the presentation of all of their learning tasks and have been awarded a Pen Licence and their first handwriting pen.

Their pens and licences were presented to them in Mr Thackway's assembly this morning.

Well done!

Class 1S What Makes A Good Friend?

Class 3Y Record Breakers

After studying world records, Class 3Y decided on some of their own records to break. We took to the field and attempted records such as; most skips in 1 minute, number of push ups in 30 seconds and most high catches in 1 minute. They then wrote recounts of their record breaking experience.

As you can see from the photographs, much fun was had by all.

Class 4M Thinking Skills

As part of our non-verbal reasoning, we have to work out the rotation or compilation of 3D shapes, this is a difficult spatial concept; so, to aid their learning the children used cubes, so they could create the shape to help them workout the answers rather than just visualising. It was definitely worthwhile.

Class 4M WW2 Studies

The children have really engaged with our history topic for this term, WW2. We've talked about evacuation and the experiences of children during this time. It might be interesting for them to watch 'Goodnight Mister Tom.'

Unfortunately we don't have time in lessons to watch this, but it is currently available on Amazon Prime should you wish to watch it as a family.

Mrs Yates
Class 4M History Teacher

Class 4M Share Family War Stories

The children have been enjoying sharing their families' stories of WW2. Charlie brought in a very precious family doll which had been rescued from a tank in WW2 that had been blown up. The doll was a gift for Charlie's Grandma from her uncle, as driver of the tank he managed to escape but he returned to tank to rescue the gift he had brought but left behind!

Harry also told the class about his Great Grandfathers who had served in the Army and RAF, sharing photos of their medical papers and uniform. Family conversations such as these are so important for all involved and really bring history to life for the children.

School Promise

School Promise Rule Of The Week

This week’s promise is in the category of Good Learners and focuses on the theme of listening.

This is such a key attribute for learning. A pupil who really listens actively, takes on advice and feedback and takes action on what they have heard, genuinely does demonstrate the learner profile that makes such a difference in the classroom.

‘We listen and don’t interrupt’

It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages from our School Promise.

Practice Your Programming At Home!

Computer programming or ‘coding’ is now a huge part of the Primary and Secondary computing curricula, and for very good reason!  It is an absolutely fantastic subject for fostering a wide range of vital transferrable skills including problem solving, reasoning, resilience, creativity, self-regulation and thinking outside of the box, not to mention the extremely useful cross-over with maths. Thinking to the future, computer programming and software games design is also one of the fastest growing global industries and most lucrative employment opportunities, and this  certainly shows no sign of slowing down. Above all it is immensely fun, can be done on your own or collaboratively and doesn’t require any expensive apps… just a device with an internet connection. If your child is keen to get stuck into some extra programming and coding at home, please take a look at the suggestions below.

KS1
For the younger children there several brilliant apps to try, all of which are free!

Daisy the  Dinosaur https://apps.apple.com/us/app/daisy-the-dinosaur/id490514278
Scratch Jnr https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/scratchjr/id895485086
Bee-bot https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/bee-bot/id500131639

KS2
The hands-down best option for KS2 children is the Scratch website, which is free and just requires a parent’s email address to create an account. It has a lot of fantastic tutorials and ready made projects, as well as the chance to ‘look inside’ and tinker with all of the existing projects on there.

https://scratch.mit.edu/

A couple of other great options include the https://code.org/ website, and if you have an iPad, the Swift Playgrounds app https://www.apple.com/uk/swift/playgrounds/

If you have any questions or would like a guide to any of these, please do get in touch.

Happy coding!

First Fixtures See The U8 and U9 Girls Take On Crackley Hall

It is fantastic to have fixtures underway once again and we were really delighted that the U8 and U9 Girls were able to take on Crackley Hall out on the playground yesterday afternoon.

For some of the children it was their very first competitive match and there was plenty of enthusiasm and happy smiley faces out on the courts alongside some really good footwork and ball passing skills.

We will have a full write up in next week's edition of the newsletter but for now we hope you enjoy the photos.

All the girls worked really hard so a huge well done to them all.

Bag2school Collection

We have arranged for Bag2school (www.bag2school.com) to do a school collection on Tuesday 22 June 2021.

Bag2school is a fundraising scheme which collects unwanted textiles and sells them to importers and textile manufacturers in many countries of Eastern and Western Europe, Africa and Asia - all of benefit to the circular economy.

This is an excellent way to get rid of all the unwanted clothing etc you have been collecting during lockdowns!  After collecting the items they will weigh them and present FoC with a cheque.

A list of the items they will collect can be found here.

Weather permitting, the playground will be open to drive your vehicle in and unload any clothing bags from 3pm - 5pm on Monday 21 June.

Covid Symptoms Guidance And School Process

Children or adults with symptoms must not enter school. Parents must check for symptoms each day before bringing their child into school.

The main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are:

  • a high temperature – please, if you have not already done so, source a thermometer to check temperatures at home
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Any children or adult who develops symptoms will need to leave the building as soon as possible and be tested for Covid-19.

Details on testing can be obtained at www gov uk/get-coronavirus-test or call the Test and Trace Helpdesk on 119.

Hand held thermometers will be used to check the temperature of any individual feeling unwell. Children who develop symptoms during the school day will be taken to the Meeting Room and their parents called to come and collect the child, as well as any siblings of the child.

Other members of the household should self-isolate for 10 days from when the symptomatic person first had symptoms, or until a negative test result is returned.

In the event of a positive test result the full protocols of test and trace will be followed www.gov.uk/guidance/nhs-test-and-trace-how-it-works#

Children returning from restricted areas outside UK must self-isolate as advised by the government guidance before returning to school.
