Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

It has been a momentous week for the school following the sad announcement earlier in the week of Pathfinders’ imminent closure. Everyone here genuinely hopes that all the staff and children affected by this will be able to find suitable alternative work and childcare arrangements soon, but we know this process will take some time. We have been doing all we can to help those Crescent parents directly affected.

For Crescent, the return of the building to the main school will be a great opportunity for us to pursue our vision of providing the perfect prep school experience for our children and their families. This includes excellence in education and pastoral care, but also genuine breadth of opportunity in sport, music, drama and extra-curricular life. Many of you attended my presentation yesterday evening where I was able to expand on these ideas and share my excitement for the school’s future prospects. They are excellent. If you were unable to attend live last night, we will send a link to view at your leisure. In the meantime, please do contact me or the senior leaders at the school if we can help further.

On Tuesday of this week, we also enjoyed an excellent parents’ information meeting on the subject of digital citizenship (click here for more information). We have moved beyond the confines of simply covering online safety to looking at our rights and responsibilities as digital users. This may seem a difficult concept for young children, but it chimes very well with the ideas behind our School Promise. As you know, being a good citizen is one of the three main elements of the promise and covers qualities such as keeping safe, being respectful and tolerant of others and being honest and telling the truth. These are excellent starting points for good online practice as well. We are very fortunate to have Mr Adkins leading digital learning in the school this year and my thanks go to him leading for an informative and entertaining presentation.

As we head towards the half term holiday, we can reflect on a strange but productive six week period. Many teachers have mentioned to me just how engaged the children have remained throughout the whole time. I know that this has been a struggle in many schools, but for the vast majority of Crescent pupils they have soldiered on and made the absolute best of difficult circumstances. They genuinely deserve a massive well done from us and from you. Thank you to you as parents as well, for all of the support you have offered the school and your children.

None of us are off to enjoy sunnier climes for the half term week but instead we can spend time together and enjoy the simple pleasures of family life. I do hope you are able to find some quality time to spend with your children.

With my very best wishes.

Crescent's Children Are Super Fundraisers For Hope4

This year the Crescent School community has worked hard to support the Rugby charity Hope4. Over the last few months, the children have held fundraising events, non-uniform days, organised food bank collections, provided Christmas cards and gifts for Hope4 clients and also taken part in a sponsored fundraising challenge called Active October co-ordinated by the Friends of Crescent.

After all that super fundraising the Friends of Crescent were delighted to announce that together the children had managed to raise an astonishing £1742.80. A huge thank to all who have supported their activities.

Hope4 have been focusing on ‘Keeping Warm In Winter’ and have confirmed that they have earmarked our donation to keep the Hope4 Centre warm for their clients over the whole of next winter.

This week, the children in Key School have had to wrap up warm in the freezing cold wintery weather, especially when they posed in the playground for our grand total photo so they all appreciate just how beneficial our donation will be.

Pathfinders Nursery On Crescent School Site To Close

The owners of Pathfinders Day Nursery, which occupies a stand-alone building on the Crescent School site, have announced that they are closing the nursery with effect from Friday 2 April 2021. The business has been under sustained pressure during the pandemic and owners, Steve and Alison Dyke, who have leased the site since 2015, have reluctantly concluded that they need to close the nursery and will wind it down over the next eight weeks.

In the light of the fact that the Dykes have decided to terminate their lease on the nursery premises, the senior team and trustees of the Crescent School, have examined the options open to them and decided that the building currently occupied by Pathfinders would be best returned for use by the school, which has grown in pupil numbers since joining the Princethorpe Foundation in 2016.

Comments Joe Thackway, Headmaster, “We are saddened that the nursery has been so badly impacted by the challenges of the past year and understand the difficulties the closure will cause families and the nursery staff. We have excellent relationships with many outstanding local nurseries and will do whatever we can to assist families with finding alternative nursery provision.”

“By accepting the building back, we will have the opportunity to develop our campus further, particularly in terms of accommodation for Music, the Performing Arts and our Before and After School Wrap-Around Care.”

The building will be handed back to the Foundation at the end of June which will allow the school time to prepare properly for the start of the new academic year in September.

Following the announcement, the school hosted an online meeting on Thursday evening where Mr Thackway spoke to the Crescent community. He expanded on the news and talked about Crescent's outline plans for the building. Feedback on the evening included: 'I would like to thank the Crescent team for support and advice regarding options for current Pathfinders children' and 'My child is currently at Pathfinders and although I am very sad about the closure I actually really like these ideas for the school. I am very excited for the benefits for all children going forward.'

You can watch a recording of the virtual meeting here.

Year 5 Mid Year Reports

Reports for 5F are now available on My School Portal. These are mid-year reports covering September to now; other classes received their reports before Christmas.

The report schedule is a little different in Year 5 due to the transition meeting in the summer changing key dates around for reports and parents' consultations. We hope you enjoy sharing these thorough documents with your child as staff have spent time making sure they are an accurate reflection of effort and performance.

One point to highlight, the house points are for Michaelmas term only. Lent term house points have not been added to the system yet due to lockdown and Junior da Vincis are 'frozen'.

Bryson Is UK Street Dance Champion

Super huge congratulations to Bryson in Year 4 who, we have just found out, came first in the Pairs Street Dance category in the UK Street Dance Championships. Bryson danced with his older brother who also won the Adult Street Dance Solo class. What a talented pair they are!

This year, because of the pandemic, the UK Street Dance Championships had to be held as an online competition. So, Bryson and his brother had to submit a video of their routines, abiding by all the rules that would have applied at a normal face to face event. Their routines were then judged alongside all the entrants and the boys’ performance earned them the gold medal.

Bryson has been a part of the official England Street Dance squad since 2019. That year he represented England in the European Championships in Italy and achieved 8th place in the U8 Solo category. The 2020 European Championships were cancelled but Bryson is very much hoping to travel to Poland in June to take part in the 2021 European Championships, if pandemic restrictions allow.

Bryson competes in events all over the country. There are four qualifying events from which the top six qualify for the UK Street Dance Championships, so Bryson was up against a lot of competition. The boys danced to Dance Monkey by Tones and I and their routine was choregraphed by Bryson’s brother.

Bryson dances Street Dance, Electric Boogie and is now learning Breakdance and his Mum told us he has a tendency to dance whenever he hears music, even when they are out shopping! Bryson’s brother is the British Champion in all three styles so clearly Bryson would like to follow in his brother’s footsteps.

What an amazing achievement Bryson, your commitment to try your best is impressive. We were all delighted to hear of your fantastic success.

Hattie Helps Hedgehogs!

Year 3 Hattie has been busy helping her local wildlife. As well as clearing out last year’s nests from the bird boxes ready for spring and feeding the birds, Hattie also checked on the hibernating hedgehogs.

Hattie’s family foster hedgehogs for Warwickshire Hedgehog Rescue and check the rescue hibernating hogs, who have been poorly, to make sure they are staying well and healthy. You never disturb wild hibernating hedgehogs, just leave them be.

Hattie’s mum said, “The rescue hogs all get released back into the wild once they are well, up to weight and the weather is warm enough.”

Wellbeing Message - Express Yourself Challenge

Each week I will be sharing chosen resources and activities to support emotional wellbeing during this time of lockdown and home learning. As a source, I will be choosing my favourite finds from the following website:

https://www.elsa-support.co.uk/

ELSA stands for Emotional Literacy Support Assistant, but alongside training opportunities for school staff, they also provide resources for families to download to help with managing feelings, emotions and behaviours. As well as their website, you can follow them on social media and subscribe to new resources being created each week.

This one was made for Children’s Mental Health Week on the theme of ‘EXPRESS YOURSELF’ It is a printable five day challenge with a drawing/writing task and a doing/talking task each day. There is a certificate for the end of the five days.

It can be accessed here, and I’d love to hear from any of you that complete it!

Class 1S Evelyn's Act Of Kindness

Last April/May during the first lockdown Evelyn was inspired by the different story themes each week in Reception class home schooling and she directed (her little sister Iris) and co-starred in acting out the story of the week including The Gingerbread Man and Goldilocks And The Three Bears, always with full props and a variety of voices! These short videos kept family and friends entertained from afar.

Last week Evelyn was inspired once again by an English activity for Mrs Stapleton and has started up the drama school again. We’ve had Rapunzel and Cinderella this week. These 2-3 minute videos keep grandparents laughing and they can re-play them, adding to the usual FaceTime calls. To quote Evelyn “my singing and acting will keep Nanna and Grandad happy while they are stuck at home”.

What a lovely thing to do Evelyn.

Omegle - 'Talk to Strangers' - Dangerous Website

The latest big website to raise a huge number of E-Safety flags is an online chat site called 'Omegle', which advertises the opportunity to talk to a random selection of 'cool' people (strangers) on the internet, very reminiscent of old style 'chat rooms'.

Although released back in 2009, it has recently had a lot of coverage on Tiktok and other social media platforms. In essence it then pairs two people together for a text or video chat with someone else currently online, from anywhere in the world.

One of the biggest concerns surrounding Omegle is that although it does have age restrictions (18+ and a 13+ with parents options) they are extremely easy to bypass by simply putting in a valid date of birth. It is also completely anonymous and so users have literally no idea with whom they are chatting.

The website obviously raises a number issues, including inappropriate language and content, cyberbullying and child exploitation. For more information, as well as safety tips and advice on how to address this subject with your children, please have a look at the the safety guide.

Interhouse Weekly Challenge - Week 5

It has been another tightly fought contest this week with the Yellow House just inching ahead of the Red House.

I have been really impressed with the commitment to the competition with many individuals showing fantastic team work never failing to enter the challenge adding valuable points for their team.

As with all our challenges, sporting and non-sporting, it has been great to see the resilience shown by so many of our pupils who have pushed themselves outside of their comfort zones, tried new skills and worked hard to make progress.

I am very proud of you

Reception Rainbow Fish

Reception have been enjoying a lovely story called, Rainbow Fish about a selfish fish who won't share but through the course of the story, realises that giving to others and sharing makes him happy and builds lovely friendships as well.

The children all decorated a scale for another child in their class and then we made one big sparkly rainbow fish per class showing that even though we are not all physically together, we are a class who are still swimming along together being kind and sharing.

We are sure you'll agree - the children did a great job.

Class 3Y Art

Last week 3Y used envelopes creatively to make a street scene which could have been inspired by their very own street! Using the shapes of envelopes to create the houses Year 3 had to think carefully about the details found on houses and the different ways houses are connected or separated on a street through terraced, semi-detached, or detached houses. I was particularly impressed by these creations by Sam O, Ollie and Maisie!

121 books have been quizzed on with Sam O, Emily and Edward GH each reading more than 12 and Alex G reading over 800,000 words.  A special mention  should go to Hattie for whizzing straight into quizzing with some excellent scores.

A huge well done to all of you and keep enjoying your reading up over half term.

Class 4M DT

Class 4M has been studying cars in DT this week. They all researched their topic, learnt all about them, then planned their own design and drew a labelled diagram.

Over two lessons they then set out to make their design and finally tested and evaluated them. I have also had a Teams meeting with each class for them to show their work to the rest of the class if they wanted to.

I have been amazed and thrilled by the time and effort they have spent on their projects, so a very well done to them all.

All super ideas that you could use too.

Class 5F French Penpals

Borders closed, lockdown, home learning… nothing is going to erode the children’s enthusiasm for the penpal venture! Children in 5F have sent me photos of themselves with their letters from France and next week we will write the replies!

Will we have any more snow before winter is over?
