Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

I hope you all enjoyed a restful half term break. I managed to keep up with my pledge for Active October and completed my 100km cycling and 50km running, so I feel in better shape for the new term (despite a bit of a bad back). We have all enjoyed having the children back in school this week refreshed and ready for their learning.

Across the country, Thursday saw the onset of a new four-week lockdown and we are delighted to remain open as usual during this time. We have looked carefully at the updated government guidance and it is pleasing to note that we already have in place the safeguards that are highlighted. We are working hard to make the school as safe as it can be for children and staff whilst maintaining as much as we can of our full programme.

We now know that sports fixtures with other schools cannot go ahead, but we had already come to the same conclusion. We have brought in much stricter limits on visitors to the school and all appointments for prospective parents have been rescheduled. As a result, our Early Birds deadline for Reception and Year 3 applicants to start in September has been moved back to Wednesday 9 December.

There has been some debate about extra-curricular club provision, but we are confident that what we are providing is within the acceptable definitions in the new guidance, which includes activities that:

  • support the rebuilding of friendships and social engagement
  • address and equip pupils to respond to issues linked to coronavirus (COVID-19)
  • support pupils with approaches to improving their physical and mental wellbeing

These clubs will continue unchanged, at least for now.

Other than that, it is business as usual and the children have been hard at work throughout the week and enjoying being back with their friends. I have even heard early stirrings of Nativity play rehearsals emanating from the hall earlier in the week which brings a welcome note of normality.

We have talked a lot in school this week about supporting each other through this period and I appreciate all of the support you as parents offer us as a school and a staff. We are into four weeks of a straightforward routine of ‘Eat; sleep; work; repeat’ and I know that if we pull together we can get through it in good shape. Seeing the children getting so much from their school life makes everything worthwhile.

Our Year 6 children this weekend will be taking their 11+ exams and they go with our thoughts and very best wishes. The exams have been significantly delayed but are finally going ahead. The good news is that they will all be sitting the exam together in the same room and this may well allay some of the normal nerves that children feel on the day. They should take considerable confidence in knowing that they go into the exams as well, or better, prepared as any.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Year 4 Before School Change Of Drop Off Arrangements

As the autumn has progressed, access to the school playing field before school has become more difficult for the Year 4 children. The ground is often wet and muddy and there is insufficient play space for the children to play.

As a result, we have created a play zone for the Year 4 children on the main playground. As from Monday morning (9 November), parents in this year group should bring your child to the main playground via the car park entrance. The new play zone will be marked clearly and explained to the children on arrival.

This will not affect children in Year 1 and Year 2, who will continue to arrive via the pupil gate next to the school field.

Whole School Pantomime Fun

We hate the thought of missing out on Christmas fun at Crescent School and many the classes enjoy going to the theatre at this time of year, so we have decided to bring the Pantomime to the children through a company called Panto on-line:

Peter Duncan, a critically acclaimed Panto Dame, Writer and Director, has decided to use his own 'Giant' back garden to film Jack and the Beanstalk - a socially distanced pantomime complete with ingenious sets, fabulous costumes...and even a real beanstalk!

They promise boos, cheers, ‘he’s behind yous', a sing-a-long song and all the classic panto antics that we love.

All classes will have opportunity to get fully involved in the final week of term.

Hope4 Fundraising Update

Harvest 2020
Thank you so much for all your online donations and food dropped off in local supermarkets, to support the Rugby Foodbank this year. It has been fantastic to see out Tree of Thankfulness blooming with leaves from all classes and seeing the ongoing generosity from our Crescent families.  What was also noted, was the number of families who donated online via the giving page - a safe and easy way to support such a worthwhile cause.

Non-Uniform Day
The children all looked fantastic in their Hope4 colours of red, blue and yellow! Thank you again for supporting the fundraising for Hope4 and our ongoing focus of 'Keeping warm this winter'. As the weather turns colder, it is important that we are all aware of those less fortunate than ourselves. From the games arranged by our School Council and the non-uniform donations we have already raised £365!

The School Council will be meeting soon to discuss ways in which we can add to this total before Christmas - so watch this space!

Remembrance Service

On Wednesday 11 November, we as a school will be remembering those who gave their lives for their country. We will gather at a safe social distance outside on the playground to hear prayers and readings and show respect through a minute's silence.

All children will need their coat that day.

We are intending to record this and share it with parents so that you as a family can share this time at home too.

Times Table Rockstars - Rock Out 2020

Monday 9 November to Saturday 14 November 2020

As part of our commitment to make Maths exciting and high profile in our school, this November we are taking part in a competition for Maths Week England. It’s called Rock Out 2020 and it’s all done online via play.ttrockstars.com.

For every correct answer to a multiplication or division question, your child will earn their class a point. The Times Tables Rock Stars platform will calculate the class average (the number of correct answers per pupil in the class who play during the competition hours). Winning classes in the school and in the country as a whole will be the ones with the highest average.

All game modes (Gig, Garage, Studio, etc.) will count but only from games played between 7.30am and 7.30pm on Monday 9 - Saturday 14 November 2020.

In the spirit of the competition, please do not play on children's behalf but by all means encourage and support them to the extent that it does not cause high stress levels or impact on family plans. We suggest a limit of half an hour a day outside school hours – some will play more, some will play less.

Thank you for your support.

  • Boys scored 20,317 points
  • Girls scored 13,338 points

Boys are the winners again!

Most Valuable players contributing the most points to their teams are:

  1st 2nd 3rd
Boys Bryson - 4M Shiv - 3Y Matthew - 2W
Girls Eve - 6W Amy - 6W Amelia - 6W

Improve your levels rehearsing in the Garage at least three times a week, before you play your next 'Gig'. The computer will give you bespoke questions depending on your answers and speed.

Go to Arena and play against classmates only - all have to be logged on at the same time at the same Arena.

Each class can have the speediest TT Rock Star and that gets you up the status board on the poster below. To get on this board you must tackle the single player game in the 'Studio', multi-player does not count for these. These also earn more coins than the multiplayer games too.

Plenty of action so last week's most improved speedsters in each class are:

Class  Name  Title

Please note only the children should play on their account or it influences the level appropriate to them.

School Promise Rule Of The Week

Over the course of the school year we will, in turn, focus on one of the elements of the School Promise. We will talk about it in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss it with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.

Digital Citizenship

Among Us

‘Among Us’, a game described as “An online and local party game of teamwork and betrayal for 4-10 players…in space!” is the latest big fad in mobile gaming. If you haven’t heard of it yet, then you soon will!

Among Us is essentially a social deduction game, similar to the party games Mafia, Werewolf or Wink Murder, in which the ‘Crew Mates’ must work together to uncover the identity of ‘Imposters’ among them. Although originally released in 2018, it has only recently become a huge hit, in part due to lockdown and in part due to being featured heavily on Switch and Youtube gaming channels. The game is admittedly very fun, especially when played with family and highly addictive, although it does still present a few E-Safety issues that require consideration.

The gameplay itself is fairly child friendly and comes with an age 7+ rating due to very mild cartoon violence, but like with most apps, the main problem lies on the ‘public’ feature of the game. This allows children to play with any other players in the world, the necessary chat feature of the game then opening them to being exposed to inappropriate language etc. This however can be easily circumvented by only playing ‘private’ games, meaning they will only be playing against people they know.

Please have a look at the attached E-Safety guide for more info, and if you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

FoC Changes

After five wonderful years for me as Chair of the FoC and for Amy Sarkies as Secretary, the time has come, with both our children nearly leaving the school, to resign our positions on the committee. We both feel that now would be a great time for a new team to come together to take the Friends of Crescent forward.

To provide continuity Nick Brosnan will remain on the committee and will be looking for individuals to put themselves forward as either Chair, Secretary or in any other capacity to work alongside him.

So if you would like to get involved or would like further information please email Nick at treasurer@friendsofcrescent.co.uk by Friday 27 November 2020.

We have pulled together lists of what’s involved so even if you’re limited on time and can’t necessarily attend the meetings they will be ways to get involved.

Both Amy and I will continue in our positions until Christmas and will be on hand to help work with the new team as they transition forward.

So, please contact Nick if you feel you can help with this amazing committee.

Kind regards

FoC Active October Activity Update

Thank you for sending in the lovely pictures of pupils enjoying Active October. Here's what some pupils got up to:

  • Kai, Shayla, Grace, Leela and Nimeeta all live near each other they took part in a run on a wet day in half term.  They had a fabulous time.
  • Emily chose to run laps of her Grandad's allotment, which is just less than a mile all the way round. She successfully managed to run 49 laps throughout the month and has raised £95. Excellent work Emily 🤩
  • Esme and Elliott cycled all the way around Draycote Water in 1 hour and 40 minutes. They both slept very well that night!
  • Isla's Active October challenge was to do 100 one-handed pogo stick jumps every day for a week!
  • Annalise, Roisin and Finn got active with lots of outdoor activities in Cornwall: coastal walks, body boarding and cycling among other activities.
  • Sophia D expressed a wish to cycle round Draycote water. So after the rain she set off with her parents on their bicycles in the glorious Autumn sunshine and returned home after 4 hours cycling, coffee and cake in the Draycote café, we clocked 16 miles of cycling and arrived home just as it was turning dark.  Sophia also baked scones and decorated cupcakes to sell at a cake sale in our garden to raise money for Macmillan Cancer support, we managed to raise £200.

  • Harry and Theo decided to challenge themselves for Active October by trying out new activities such as a very high climbing wall and archery.
  • Mya and Kiran completed their Active October challenge by walking around Draycote water. They were very tired by the end!
What a busy half term you had!  Please click through the gallery to view the photos.

Anti-Fraud

Cyber-crime – please be extra vigilant

Parents are asked to be vigilant when reading emails relating to the payment of school fees and any other items to the Foundation.

We continue to receive reports regarding spam emails.  The latest scam offers a large discount on fees for the coming academic year if paid immediately.

This is probably trying to take advantage of the fact that some independent schools have offered discounts for this term and that parents may therefore be more open to such a suggestion. You can always protect yourselves by only making payments to us in line with our normal, published methods.

As advised, there has been no change to the bank details of either Princethorpe College, Crackley Hall or Crescent and there is no intention to make any changes in the foreseeable future. Any electronic notification that appears to be from any of the Foundation schools changing these details may be fraudulent.  Our bank details are available on the Parent Bills, the Online Payment Portal and in the Information Booklet for each school, and only those details should be used.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or my colleagues in the Bursary if you are have any doubts about the correct details or indeed if anything appears suspicious.

The intention of the letter is to help prevent children being taken out of school unnecessarily and answer some of the questions parents may have around testing.

Children or adults with symptoms must not enter school. Parents must check for symptoms each day before bringing their child into school.

The main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are:

  • a high temperature – please, if you have not already done so, source a thermometer to check temperatures at home
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Any children or adult who develops symptoms will need to leave the building as soon as possible and be tested for Covid-19.

Details on testing can be obtained at www gov uk/get-coronavirus-test or call the Test and Trace Helpdesk on 119.

Hand held thermometers will be used to check the temperature of any individual feeling unwell. Children who develop symptoms during the school day will be taken to the Meeting Room and their parents called to come and collect the child, as well as any siblings of the child.

Other members of the household should self-isolate for 14 days from when the symptomatic person first had symptoms, or until a negative test result is returned.

In the event of a positive test result the full protocols of test and trace will be followed www.gov.uk/guidance/nhs-test-and-trace-how-it-works#

Children returning from restricted areas outside UK must self-isolate as advised by the government guidance before returning to school.
