Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

The children have really settled down to school life this week. It is now the end of the second week back and school feels a lot more normal with plenty of hard work and endeavour going on in all of the classrooms. We have maintained the measures set out in our risk assessment and the children have taken to them in no time at all. Seeing teachers and helpers wearing masks and visors is now completely normal for the children, they don’t bat an eyelid. It is always amazing how quickly children adapt to new circumstances. Things that seemed unthinkable just a few short months ago are now common place.

I was delighted to appoint our new Head Boy and Girl this morning. It was a very difficult decision to make with so many strong candidates to consider. Well done to everyone who put their names forward. This takes some courage and they deserve our congratulations for going for it. Holding positions of responsibility is an important part of the Year 6 experience and next week we look forward to the appointment of the house captains.

I would like to make a special mention of the current Year 6 class who have really impressed me in the first two weeks with their mature approach to returning to school. They have shown how to do this in a calm and responsible way and shown a great example to all those around them. It will be a different year for all of us, but it will require the same qualities of resilience, fortitude and good humour that were shown last term. Everything that Year 6 have done up to this stage persuades me that things will be no different this time round.

At the other end of the school, it has been lovely to see the new Reception classes coming in with such enthusiasm and confidence. There have been only a very few tears and many smiles with all of the children loving their start to the term.

Seeing the children come into class brings home to all of us just how important an institution schools are for us as a society and for the individual children as well. Having said that, we know that partial school closures and the isolation of bubbles remain distinct possibilities over the coming months. In that situation we would of course revert immediately to home learning through Seesaw and Teams and look to keep those affected fully in the swing of school life. Partial temporary closures have already happened in local schools so we must remain vigilant and keep the protocols in place that we have agreed on and so minimise the numbers who would be affected, should this occur.

Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Head Boy And Head Girl Announced For 2020/21 School Year

Crescent School is delighted to confirm our Head Boy and Head Girl for the 2020/21 academic year.  Our congratulations go to George and Alyssa who have been selected to take on the roles. They were both appointed following a rigorous selection process which included application letters as well as a student and staff vote.

The positions of Head Boy and Head Girl are extremely important ones as they are the most senior pupil roles in the school. George and Alyssa will be the leaders of our pupil community and will be an important link between the children and staff.

Further responsibilities including the House and Team Captains will be announced shortly.

All of our Year 6 pupils play an ambassadorial role within the school. Working in three house teams, they undertake a wide range of duties in and around the school and represent the school at public events such as Open Days. Most importantly they act as role models for the wider school community, particularly for the youngest children in our Reception class. All of the Reception children are buddied up with a Year 6 pupil for the year, who look after them, play with them and sit with them at lunch.

Headmaster, Joe Thackway, said, “It was a difficult decision to make from the many excellent applications.  I offer my congratulations to George and Alyssa and I look forward to working with them next school year.”

Feranmi's Art Is Highly Commended

Feranmi from Reception Class entered the Birmingham Museum Trust’s Inspire20 art competition, ‘What I Can See’ focusing on things in our homes, gardens, skies, views, and even in our imaginations and thoughts.  Following a judging process, Feranmi's entry was awarded Highly Commended in the category 0-4 years, for his artwork, ‘Birds and Insect’.

The judges described Feranmi's work as charming, with lots of detail and energy.  They also liked how some of his lockdown activities, like taking a walk, had such a clear impact on his work and provided lots of lasting interest.

Feranmi received a wonderful selection of museum goodies from the museum shop. Well done Feranmi, we are very proud of you.

Current Uniform Expectations

In the first half of the Autumn Term children should come to school in summer uniform together with their school blazers whilst the temperatures are still reasonably mild.  Parents can use their discretion to send children in winter uniform if the weather turns cooler or if it is raining.

After the half term break all children are expected to be in full winter uniform.  Parents can again then use their discretion as to whether blazers or the school coat are more appropriate for the weather at the time.

When it does get really cold we do need all the children to have their coats in school so we can make a decision on outdoor break times.

Please note hair should be tied back.

Thank you for your cooperation with these guidelines.

Scholastic Book Club

Our new Scholastic Book Club is up and running! Go to http://schools.scholastic.co.uk/the-crescent to browse the latest books and order online. For every £1 you spend on this month’s Book Club, our school will earn 20p in Scholastic Rewards.

Please place your order online by 2 October 2020.

Thank you for your support with this.

Kindles Or Other E-Readers In School

Kindles or other e-reader are allowed in school from Year 3 for the children to read from. It is important that reading is as accessible as possible for children and often books are cheaper online. The children really only need to be reading one book rather than having a school book and a home book, one book can do both jobs and will save on confusion for the child.

If you decide that your child can bring their Kindle or other e-reader in, then it is to be used for reading ONLY. There will be no internet access. If a child is found using it inappropriately then parents will be informed. The Kindle will be the child's responsibility and any breakages are not our responsibility.

Please be reassured there are more than enough books in school for your child to enjoy and there is no necessity for your child to have a Kindle or e-reader, it is just a different way to access books if you wish to.

Important Information - Dogs On Site

In line with many, if not all, primary aged schools, dogs are not allowed on the main school site.  If you come to school with a dog please keep it on a lead and avoid coming onto the main site beyond the drop off gate (the one next to the parents’ noticeboard).

With thanks for your understanding and support on this important health and safety matter.

Nut-Free School

I would like to remind parents that Crescent School, along with the other schools of the Princethorpe Foundation, aims to be a nut-free zone. Whilst we cannot guarantee that children won’t come into contact with nuts or products with nut traces whilst at school, we endeavour to reduce this risk as far as we can.

The aim of this strategy is to possibly reduce the risk to those children and adults who may suffer an anaphylactic reaction if exposed to nuts to which they are sensitive. The school aims to protect children who have allergies to nuts yet also help them, as they grow up, to take responsibility as to what foods they can eat and to be aware of where they may be put at risk.

Our 'Nut-Free Zone' means that the following items should not be brought into school:

  • Packs of nuts
  • Peanut butter sandwiches
  • Fruit and cereal bars that contain nuts
  • Chocolate bars or sweets that contain nuts
  • Sesame seed rolls (children allergic to nuts may also have a severe reaction to sesame)
  • Cakes made with nuts

No nuts are used in any of the food prepared on site at our school.  Our suppliers provide us with nut-free products. However, we cannot guarantee freedom from nut traces.

It is worth noting that there are currently children in school with a known nut allergy.  Exposure to nuts for these children could result in serious consequences. I know that you, like me, would do anything reasonably possible to prevent this from happening.

We ask all parents to support us in this policy by providing nut-free mid-morning snacks and not using nuts in cakes provided for bake sales or fund raising events.

Jewellery In School

Please would parents ensure that children do not come into school wearing jewellery.

Necklaces and bracelets can easily be broken or lost and are potentially hazardous for children taking part in physical activities or experiments. Earrings are not to be worn in school at anytime.

Modern style watches can be worn in school as long as they don't have any communication capability. We would recommend that this isn't appropriate for children in Pre-Prep.

Thank you for you cooperation with this health and safety matter.

Times Table Rockstars

Weekly battle 31 August - 10 September

Boys Girls
4,359 points 1,037 points

Boys are the winners! Aryan in 5F and Asha in 6W contributed the most points to their teams.

Each class can have the speediest TT Rock Star and that gets you up the status board on the poster. To get on this board you have to tackle the single player games - Garage, Studio and Soundcheck, multi-player do not count for these. These also earn more coins than the multiplayer games too.

I can see plenty playing multiplayer games- but you need to play the singles to get a status.

Over the holiday weeks, the most improved speedsters in each class were:

  • Class 3Y: Remi - Rock Star
  • Class 6W: Michael - Rock Star and Asha - Headliner!

I have also set up a 'Battle' from Thursday 10 September - Thursday 17 September, 'Girls Vs Boys' for the whole school.

Battles add up any points at all as you play! I will let you know who wins  in the next Courier.

Stay Calm and Keep Rocking!

Co-Curricular Forest School

The Forest School club (1S) made it outside today. We had great fun making sticky pallets. Each child had a piece of card with double-sided sticky tape on it and was asked to stick on the card anything they liked the look, feel or sound of. Some found leaves of different colours and textures, sticks of various sizes and feathers. Lilah even found a spoon!

School Promise

School Promise Rule Of The Week

For a two or three week period this year we will be focusing on one of the sayings in the School Promise. We will talk about this in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.

This week’s promise is an excellent one to start the year with and is in the category of Good Friends:

E-Safety Guidance – TikTok

You may have read in the news recently about a number of E-Safety concerns surrounding the popular App TikTok. If you are unfamiliar with it, it is a video sharing and lip syncing program that allows its users to create short videos, usually dance or music orientated and post these online.

The app has become incredibly popular since the start of lockdown and can be a nice, creative way for children to express themselves. It does however come with a number of potentially very serious and damaging pitfalls in terms of E-Safety, most notably in terms of age-inappropriate content, inappropriate lyrics, trolling, its use by online predators and its addictive nature.

If you are thinking of allowing your child to have a Tiktok account, or if they are already using it, please read through the attached E-Safety guide. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Welcome From The Friends Of Crescent (FOC)

Hello to all existing parents and welcome to all the new parents,

Usually I would be talking to you all about all our plans for this academic year, however, you just need to bear with us whilst we scope out what we are able to do under this new world that we live in. I'm sure we will still be able to do some form of school fundraising albeit in a new format. We will be working on this over the next couple of weeks with the committee and I promise to update you as soon as possible.

In the meantime we are asking you to consider a one off donation, of typically £10/£20 to enable the committee to deliver to and for the children up to the end of 2020. Please use the usual Friends of Crescent Bank Account details (sort code 309717 Account number 01174774).

This money will allow us to continue to fund activities for our children like last year where we purchased equipment for 'The Wren's Nest' wellbeing room, play equipment for the EYFS outdoor learning area, filmed both the Selfish Ladybird and the Year 6 Leavers' assembly, as parents were unable to attend these events, and provided cakes and ice creams for all the children who returned to school. We also purchased the customary Leavers' hoodies for all of Year 6.

If you haven't joined our facebook page, please click on the link below:

Friend of Crescent Facebook Page

Take care everyone and we'll get our thinking caps on to come up with new fundraising ideas that keep us all safe.

Anti-Fraud

Cyber-crime – please be extra vigilant

Parents are asked to be vigilant when reading emails relating to the payment of school fees and any other items to the Foundation.

We continue to receive reports regarding spam emails.  The latest scam offers a large discount on fees for the coming academic year if paid immediately.

This is probably trying to take advantage of the fact that some independent schools have offered discounts for this term and that parents may therefore be more open to such a suggestion. You can always protect yourselves by only making payments to us in line with our normal, published methods.

As advised, there has been no change to the bank details of either Princethorpe College, Crackley Hall or Crescent and there is no intention to make any changes in the foreseeable future. Any electronic notification that appears to be from any of the Foundation schools changing these details may be fraudulent.  Our bank details are available on the Parent Bills, the Online Payment Portal and in the Information Booklet for each school, and only those details should be used.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or my colleagues in the Bursary if you are have any doubts about the correct details or indeed if anything appears suspicious.

COVID-19

Covid Symptoms Guidance And School Process

Children or adults with symptoms must not enter school. Parents must check for symptoms each day before bringing their child into school.

The main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are:

  • a high temperature – please if you have not already done so source a thermometer to check temperatures at home;
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual);
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

Any children or adult who develops symptoms will need to leave the building as soon as possible and be tested for Covid-19.

Details on testing can be obtained at www gov uk/get-coronavirus-test or calling Test and Trace helpdesk on 119.

Hand held thermometers will be used to check the temperature of any individual feeling unwell. Children who develop symptoms during the school day will be taken to the Meeting Room and their parents called to come and collect the child, as well as any siblings of the child.

Other members of the household should self-isolate for 14 days from when the symptomatic person first had symptoms, or until a negative test result is returned.

In the event of a positive test result the full protocols of test and trace will be followed www.gov.uk/guidance/nhs-test-and-trace-how-it-works#

Children returning from restricted areas outside UK must self-isolate as advised by the government guidance before returning to school.

Test And Trace

Do not wait, if you have symptoms, get a test as soon as possible.  You need to get the test done in the first five days of having symptoms. Anyone with symptoms can be tested.

For more information on testing please follow the link below, tests can also be booked by calling 119.  www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing-and-tracing/get-a-test-to-check-if-you-have-coronavirus/

If you or any member of your household is contacted by NHS Test and Trace and advised to self-isolate it is vital that you do so.  If any pupil has been advised to self-isolate or is off school due to illness, please inform the school via the attendance line in the usual way and arrangements can be made for work to be sent home.

If you have recently returned from another country please follow the rules for re-entering the UK and self-isolate if you have been advised to do so. For information see www.gov.uk/uk-border-control.
