Welcome to The Courier, Crescent School's electronic newsletter.

It's the end of another busy and fun week both in School and for those Home Learning.  Year 6 had a Shakespeare Week; plays were acted out, globes made and they found their way to Stratford upon Avon in French and Geography!

Don't miss the Home Learning section, it shows all the wonderful work the children are producing.

Mr Thackway's message contains information regarding the potential return of Years 2-5 to school.

And by the time you receive this the new school film The Crescent Promise will have premiered - we hope you like it! #littleschoolbigambitions

Have a lovely weekend.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

Welcome to this week's newsletter.

Today sees the launch of our new school video on the School Promise. You can follow the link for this here to get your premiere showing and I hope it will give everyone a reason to smile before the weekend. We enjoyed making the film and I think it has a very clever angle on the school and its unique ethos.

There have been two big stories in the news this week that I wanted to refer to in my message today.

The first one relating directly to us was the announcement on Tuesday by Gavin Williamson regarding the government’s updated plans on the return to school. As I am quite sure you already know, they have taken away the requirement for all children to return to primary schools by the end of this term. However, the new guidance also makes provision for schools who are able to cater for extra pupils to do so in a safe way. My instinct, shared with the rest of the staff I know, is to do everything we can to bring all of the children back, at least for some time, before the end of term. Social interactions with the rest of the group are so important and a return to school, even for a short time, would be a wonderful opportunity to provide closure emotionally on the current year. Of course, against this I have to weigh the need for proper distancing and safe practice. I am currently working hard with the leadership and compliance teams here, looking at the options available. I will be back in touch with all parents early next week with more concrete plans.

The second big story that came to the fore last weekend, is the worldwide protests on the issue of race equality and discrimination. For what it is worth, I would like to add my voice in support of those key messages of anti-racism and equal opportunities for people of ethnic minority backgrounds.

Throughout my life I have held strong beliefs about the rights of all to equality and the evils of racial prejudice. Why should any individual suffer negative or demeaning comments as they go about their daily life? It undermines self-belief and results in a slow alienation from wider society. The impact of spiteful or misjudged comments accumulate over time for those on the receiving end. This sort of everyday racism may seem to be at the low end of the scale when compared with the tragic circumstances of the death of an individual, such as in the shocking case of George Floyd, but can be enormously damaging in their own right. I believe that the message of these recent protests is absolutely about both ends of this spectrum.

We take this seriously in school and celebrating differences is central part of our PSHE programme as well as our broader pastoral message. However, that's not to say there isn't more we can do. As all of us here need to reflect honestly on this and ask ourselves what we can do. We are already doing exactly that as we make our preparations for next school year.

I do hope you can dodge the showers this weekend and enjoy some quality time with your families.

School Promise Rule Of The Week

For a two or three week period this year we will be focusing on one of the sayings in the School Promise. We will talk about this in assembly and in form period. It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages we are emphasising in school.

From now until the end of term we will be looking at a very important idea from the Good Citizens section of the Promise:

"We keep our school tidy and take pride in our clothes and our uniform."

New Film Reveals What Makes The Crescent School So Special

"Would you like to know what makes the Crescent so special?" Has been the question asked of the school’s social media followers all this week.

The cryptic message has repeatedly posed the question alongside a series of cinema inspired images in a countdown to the big reveal today, Friday 12 June at 4.00pm, when the new Crescent School film was premiered.

The film cleverly combines live action with the school’s animated Crescent Promise characters to uniquely bring the different elements of the promise to life. Produced by the Foundation Marketing Team and award-winning Affixxius Films, the film was shot over the Lent Term and aims to communicate how the Crescent School Promise fosters and develops the qualities of kindness and tolerance in a safe and caring environment where staff and families work together to deliver an inspiring, challenging and varied education.

Comments, Headmaster, Joe Thackway, “The Crescent School Promise expresses our community’s shared values, it is a simple set of guidelines, developed and shared by all pupils and staff, that helps our pupils become Good Friends, Good Learners and Good Citizens.

The launch has been timed to coincide with the Crescent School’s first ever Virtual Open Evening on Tuesday 16 June at 6.00pm.

With thanks to Affixxius Films, Dam Design who created our Promise characters, and to all the pupils and staff who helped and took part in the film - what stars you are!

Now it’s time to roll out the red carpet, grab your popcorn, sit back and view the film here. We'd love you to like and share it on social media, hope you enjoy it!

FOC's Doughnuts Were A Lovely Tuesday Treat

Huge thanks to the wonderful and thoughtful Friends Of Crescent who surprised us all this week with a lovely Tuesday treat. The doughnuts were very much enjoyed by pupils and staff alike.  They were a super energy boost at breaktime that helped us all be extra productive with our learning.

Children can win a £10 National Book Token for themselves and each of their classmates – and surprise them all when schools reopen!

While children are at home, encourage them to create a National Book Token design for our competition. Whether it's the school crest doodled in ink, a pencil drawing of the entire class, or something completely different, the competition organisers will choose one child's design to put on a National Book Tokens gift card every week for seven weeks.

When schools open up again, the young designer and their classmates will each receive a £10 National Book Token – emblazoned with the winning artwork – to inspire them to choose their next favourite book from their local bookshop.

Bilton Coronavirus Support Group Reminder

Hello Crescent Families

I am writing on behalf of Bilton Coronavirus Support Group (BCSG). It is a support group, run by volunteers, which has been established locally. Volunteers have come together to help the Bilton community during the COVID-19 crisis by shopping for people and collecting prescriptions.

A Facebook page was initially established just before lockdown and leaflets were put through resident’s doors, offering a point of contact for people who are shielding/isolating and may need help. I would like to let families know that our support group, run by volunteers, is on hand to help people locally.

So much has changed in the last two months. As well as the Facebook page we now have a website and also an answering telephone service where people can log requests. Things are beginning to ease but there is fear of a second wave.

A new leaflet has been produced and are starting to be distributed. We’d like to take this opportunity to let residents know that help is still available and how they can request support, if and when they may need it. You can view this leaflet below and information regarding how people can seek help:

COVID 19 A5 leaflet

Ask for assistance

We are also in the process of setting up a hardship fund, for those people/families in Bilton who may find themselves in financial difficulty due to the Covid situation. Small one-off discretionary grants will hopefully be available soon. If anyone would like further information regarding this, please let me know.

We have also been redistributing unwanted food parcels given by the council to people on the vulnerable/shielding list. We have been donating non-perishable food to the Foodbank but often we collect perishable items e.g. bread, fruit and veg. If you know of any families who would welcome a food donation, we can’t promise what it is, please get in touch.

Finally, as a parent myself, I’d like to say a huge thank you for everything you and the rest of the staff are doing to keep our children going.

If there is any further information you require, please don’t hesitate contacting me.

Kindest regards

Move-up Morning

Wednesday 24 June 2020

This is an opportunity for the children to meet with their teacher for next year. We will run these sessions during the day on 24 June, using Teams meetings. Children will be invited to join their meeting with a link sent by Seesaw. They will have the usual opportunities to share their hopes and fears for the year ahead and do some bonding activities with their new form teacher.

This is also the day when our Year 6 children who are moving to Princethorpe College will have their move up session. I know that Princethorpe have a number of exciting opportunities planned, full details will be with you shortly. Other destination schools may also be planning similar sessions, we will let you know as soon as we have any more details.

Welcome Evening

Thursday 25 June 2020 - 7.00pm

This year’s Welcome Evening will take place in two consecutive Teams meetings.

The first will be a general meeting for all parents at 7.00pm. This is an opportunity to hear from Mr Thackway about the highlights of the year gone by and some plans for 2020-21.

This will be followed by a second meeting with your form teacher, who will run through with you a series of key points and information to prepare you for the start of the autumn term.

Leavers’ Service

Friday 3 July 2020 - 2.30pm

We have some exciting news about this year’s Leavers’ Service!

We have agreed to team up with Chugg Productions to produce a special Leavers’ Souvenir Video that will be sent out free of charge to all Year 6 children and families. The video will include a ‘Crescent Memory’ from each of our leavers, a professionally recorded video of the Leavers’ Service, a picture slideshow of the children’s time in school and a musical performance as well. We are very grateful to the Friends of Crescent, who have agreed to fund the costs of this unique memento for the children at such an unusual time.

The Leavers’ Service itself will take place on the school playground, weather permitting. This location will allow for appropriate distancing and enable all the children who are able to attend to be present. All children will be invited to attend in person, although we will not be able to accommodate parents due to the current restrictions. Prizes will be awarded, speeches made and Leavers’ gifts presented. In the event of wet weather, the service will be filmed from the school library with prizes awarded in classrooms with filming in place.

Pastoral Message From Mr Webb

Dear Parents

It's very easy in the normal rush and flow of modern life to forget to reflect on what we're doing and to take things that become almost every day for granted.  With lockdown I've found myself with more time to become perhaps more appreciative of work, shopping trips, days out at local attractions, holidays, sporting or musical events...

I think children are no different to this as they get swept along in a regular whirlwind of school, co-curricular options, out of school clubs, seeing family, parties, playdates...

It's been interesting the extent to which many of them have mentioned to school staff in recent teams meetings the things that they miss, that they are most looking forwards to returning to when allowed again.  I guess these are the very things that perhaps they, just like us, have subconsciously long taken for granted.

As we all look to return, over time, to the things that we love I think we have a one off, genuine opportunity to talk openly to the children about appreciating things that we now know can be taken away in a moment in ways that none of us would ever have expected.  Perhaps their generation, more than the ones before them, will have learned not to take things for granted.

With all best wishes for a happy weekend.

CLANG Of The Week

Over the last couple of weeks it has been lovely to see more children in school and to see how well the children have adapted to the changes put in place.

Here’s my CLANG of the week...

CONNECT
I’ve realised how important it is to actually see people and the children for real, not just through a screen

LEARN
I’ve learnt quite a bit about Shakespeare whilst planning for Year 6 this week

Be ACTIVE
I’ve loved watching Year 6 play their new game: ‘Hoop Tag’ – facilitated and coached by Mrs Dowling;

Take NOTICE
After the welcome rain we have had, all the spring flowers have bloomed even more;

GIVE
I’ve given my dog more walks than ever this week as we have to leave the house every time we have a house viewing; he’s shattered!

Second Place For George In Tennis Challenge

Crescent School’s pupils have been enthusiastically taking part in the CSW School Games Virtual Challenge. Organised by Think Active, the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire School Games Virtual Challenge is an exciting programme of sporting competition running throughout the summer term.

Week 1 focused on Athletics Skills whilst Week 2 was all about Cricket Skills and in both weeks Crescent pupils’ hard work helped the school win the Primary School Participation Award.

After the half term week, Week 3 concentrated on Tennis and featured two skill challenges, the Target Throw and the Switch. 2255 participants took part from 171 schools and the school was delighted that this week George from Class 6W, took 2nd place in the Key Stage 2 tennis results.

A huge well done to everyone who took part and do get involved with Week 4, the Dance Skill Challenge.

Anti-Fraud – Reminder

Cyber-crime – please be extra vigilant

Parents are asked to be vigilant when reading emails relating to the payment of school fees and any other items to the Foundation.

We continue to receive reports regarding spam emails.  The latest scam offers a large discount on fees for the coming academic year if paid immediately.

This is probably trying to take advantage of the fact that some independent schools have offered discounts for this term and that parents may therefore be more open to such a suggestion. You can always protect yourselves by only making payments to us in line with our normal, published methods.

As advised, there has been no change to the bank details of either Princethorpe College, Crackley Hall or Crescent and there is no intention to make any changes in the foreseeable future. Any electronic notification that appears to be from any of the Foundation schools changing these details may be fraudulent.  Our bank details are available on the Parent Bills, the Online Payment Portal and for Princethorpe in the Information Booklet 2019 – 2020 for each school, and only those details should be used.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or my colleagues in the Bursary if you are have any doubts about the correct details or indeed if anything appears suspicious.

Fun in Reception...

Wet playtimes and safe distancing aren’t getting in the way of having fun in Reception. The children have impressed me with their creative play ideas - and independent learning. We’ve had child initiated measuring with cubes, size sorting, pattern creation, puppet role play and model making to mention a few.

Class 1E English

In English this week, we have been brushing up on parts of speech and looking in particular at nouns, verbs and adjectives. Lots of fun was had on our verbs day.

We were lucky enough to have a dry morning so the children could work in pairs, outside, with lots of distance giving each other verb instructions to carry out as quickly as they could – RUN to the fence, POINT at the football nets, JUMP, SIT, HOP, LIE, CRAWL.

We finished with a verb race where all the children competed against each other to get to the finish line in all manner of different ways.

Great active learning.

Class 3S French

With the Summer term nearing its end, I have started to prepare our current Year 3 for the next step…the introduction of Reading and Writing in French!

Home Learning has provided me with a flexible platform that allows the children to do the work at their own pace and make choices. This week, in order to practise the vocabulary for body parts that we have studied since the start of home learning, they had the choice of learning a song in French (that would be Listening and Speaking), playing some games (that would be Listening…Reading and Writing) and/or completing a wordsearch (Reading and Writing skills).

They have made a terrific start on these new skills.

Class 3S Sutton Hoo Helmets

3S have been learning about the Sutton Hoo burial site as part of their topic on Anglo-Saxons. One of the most important artefacts that was discovered was an iron helmet. A replica has been made of it and the children used templates to create a drawing of how the helmet might have looked. They studied the engravings and patterns and produced some fabulous designs.

Some of them are shared here.

Year 6 Shakespeare Week

What a great week we have had in Year 6 with a wide range of activities, all linked with Shakespeare. Pupils have given directions in French around Stratford upon Avon, played a form of croquet in sport, enjoyed Elizabethan dancing in PE, explored a play in Latin, studied Macbeth in English, built the Globe Theatre in DT, completed map work in Geography, used Elizabethan money and Elizabethan numerals in Maths to name just some of the fun activities.

Take a look at a few of our photos.

Year 6 Shakespeare Maths

Our maths lessons this week have looked at the finances of Shakespeare's times. We learnt about the monetary system and converted pence, shillings and pounds. We've learnt about the 20 different gold and silver coins used by Shakespeare and the combinations of these that could used to buy popular items of the time.

Year 6 also revised our knowledge of Roman numerals and learnt a little about Elizabethan numerals. We wrote key events of Shakespeare's time in Roman numerals to create a timeline.
