Welcome to the Courier, Crescent School's electronic newsletter.

This week you can read all about the work the Children did for VE Day, including the entries for Mr Thackway's competition.  Again we have some fantastic Home Learning articles and lots of Good Citizens.

Roisin in Class 1E produced a lovely design for Mrs Pullen's Outdoor Learning this week where they were asked to find 'natural bits and pieces' and use them to create a picture or model. We thought is was so lovely it deserved to be on the front page of the Courier.  Well done Roisin.

Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

I hope you are all well and another week of home learning has gone well for you and the children. Since the government announcements on Sunday evening we have been working furiously here to develop our response and make sure we are prepared for all eventualities. I have written to all parents today explaining our intentions. You will be receiving these letters separately by ISAMs and I do hope they make everything as clear as possible.

We often talk to the children about the benefits of resilience and flexibility. With the currently fluid and rapidly changing circumstances, we are certainly being asked to practise what we preach. I know there will always be alternative points of view, which I completely respect, but broadly I do support the government plans and I am keen to get children back in the school and thereby allow at least some parents to return to work. Having said that, it all remains subject to change and we will continue to respond in the best way we can to meet the needs of your children.

I have spent some time this week looking through lesson provision for different year groups using Seesaw. I am so impressed with the sheer range and detail that the lessons provide. I hope your children are now in the rhythm of picking up their messages and lesson plans and I know that teachers really appreciate the positive messages that you give them. I'm also pleased to say that all children have now had the opportunity to take part in Teams lessons, with the older ones becoming increasingly expert in its usage.

We had many high-quality entries into the VE Day competition last weekend, and I hope you will enjoy looking at them in the Gallery in this week’s newsletter as much as I did. Congratulations to the winners but also to the other entrants, who all deserve much praise.

With my best wishes for a peaceful weekend.

VE Day Competition

As part of our History Day to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day I set the children a competition to win a copy of 'My Secret War Diary' by Marcia Williams. There were three books to win.

As announced in my Assembly this morning, congratulations go to the winners who are listed below (you can view their submission by clicking on the link):

Kian from Reception

Liana Class 4M

Eve Class 5F

We had so many amazing entries and we have collated them into the documents below:

Well done to all the children who took part.  It was a pleasure to read all your entries.

School Promise Rule Of The Week

In Monday's assembly Mr Thackway spoke about the School Promise Rule of the Week.  This week’s promise is in the category of Good Learners and focuses on the theme of listening.

This is such a key attribute for learning. A pupil who really listens actively, takes on advice and feedback and takes action on what they have heard, genuinely does demonstrate the learner profile that makes such a difference in the classroom.

‘We listen and don’t interrupt’

It would be great if you could discuss this with your children at home and support the messages from our School Promise.

Crescent Celebrated And Commemorated VE Day

Last Friday 8 May marked the 75th anniversary of VE Day, the end of the Second World War in Europe. There were plenty of celebrations to mark this important anniversary, but the Crescent School wanted to commemorate the day in our own special way. So, on Thursday 7 May, pupils spent the day off timetable, taking part in lessons for a themed VE History Day.

Headmaster, Joe Thackway kicked off proceedings with a VE Day Assembly. Mr Thackway talked to the children about the Second World War and VE Day and then he set them a writing challenge.

Throughout the day the children took part in a host of different themed activities they included delights such as: creating invitations to a VE party in 1945, designing, making and labelling in French a VE day picnic, designing and making flags and bunting, decoding and encoding Morse code and then undertaking a spot of code breaking, writing newspaper reports, making air raid shelters, putting together their own evacuee suitcases, performing wartime songs and dances, designing commemorative teacups and even creating war medals.

Across the school everyone participated enthusiastically, and it was wonderful to see all the photos of the super work the children produced. We are sure you all now know a lot more about the Second World War and VE Day.

This morning Mr Thackway announced the winners of his writing competition. He was very impressed by all the entries. Congratulations to Kian, Liana and Eve, you each win a copy of a wonderful, informative book, 'My Secret War Diary' by Marcia Williams.

In the Gallery there are examples of the children's super work.

We hope you all enjoyed our History Day and last weekend's commemorations, and alongside all in our country, we give thanks to all those who gave so much to secure the peace, freedom and prosperity our society enjoys today.

Crescent's Pupils Keep Their Promises

Crescent’s School Promise challenges pupils to be Good Friends, Good Learners and Good Citizens, introduced back in 2018, it was quickly embraced as an important part school life, and over the last two years we have often been impressed by how intrinsic it has become to the way that our pupils behave.

The recent pandemic lockdown has proved to be another opportunity for pupils to live up to the Crescent School Promise. Week in week out we have been hearing stories of our pupils going that extra mile to be Good Friends, Good Learners and Good Citizens.

We especially wanted to highlight the many children who are giving back to their communities. So many are living up to the Good Citizens promise outside of school. Whether creating banners or posters to thank the NHS, giving birthday cards or gifts to their neighbours, sending virtual hugs to distant family and friends, shopping for vulnerable relatives, picking up litter in their communities, painting and hiding ‘Happy Stones’ to cheer up others on their walks, speaking (at a social distance) to neighbours or those they pass on walks, writing letters to residents in care homes, reading to grandparents over Face Time, supporting their families by helping with the household chores or organising fundraising to help others, we have been impressed by them all. There are yet more examples in the Courier today.

We just wanted to say a huge thank you to all our Crescent community for all your many wonderful acts of citizenship. You are an inspiration to us all!

Pre-Prep Wellbeing

Now that Pre-Prep children are all familiar with Teams we are able to extend a Wellbeing Wednesday drop-in session to Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children too.  It's a bit like chatting on the playground - totally optional, one child at a time, not learning based.

I will be available on Teams on a Wednesday from 14:00 to 14:30.  The link will be provided by Form Tutors on Monday morning.

Mrs Webb's Philosophy Tips

Whats your Philosophy?

Philosophy covers all sorts of questions and subjects, but when someone says, "My philosophy is..." they most often mean their view of what is important in life, or what a good life is like.

Now both isn't and might be a good time for such questions. It isn't because at such an unusual time, our thinking might be distorted; it might be because we might have more time to think, and fewer distractions.  Some of the questions that might lead up to thinking about what your philosophy is are:

  • What makes you happy?
  • What do you miss most?
  • What do you not miss?
  • What are you most grateful for at the moment?
  • What do you want to get back to normal?
  • What do you not want to get back to normal?
  • What have you learned about yourself?
  • What are you proud of?
  • What do you hope for?
  • If you could make one law for the world for when things change, what would it be?
Some things or characteristics are valuable for what they can do (perhaps money, being good at selling things). Some things or characteristics are valuable just for themselves. What do you think is valuable just for itself?
  • What things or characteristics seem less important now than they did?
  • What things or characteristics seem more important now than they did?
  • Are there things you want that you would rather you didn't want? (Not as in, you get to have them, but as in you don't even want them any more).
  • What are the things you would want to want, if you could choose what you wanted?

What is your philosophy?

Teachers' Favourite Books

We thought you would like some book recommendations from the teachers, this week Mrs Monteith is sharing hers, some of you may have read these books or they may be ones you could try.

Mrs Webb
Assistant Head

Mrs Monteith's favourite books:

The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. I will never forget receiving this for Christmas in 1985. A gift from my parents, it was a sturdy, green hardback edition with the most exquisite glossy pictures by Arthur Rackham. I immediately loved the depiction of the main characters; the shy, good-natured Mole; the sensible, quick-witted Rat; the respected but elusive Badger ; and perhaps my favourite of all, the jovial, good-hearted but conceited Toad. The animals take on such human qualities and are so brilliantly written, that you are at once drawn in to their world, feeling every emotion along with them.

This is, on the surface, a story of mystery and adventure, of twists and turns, mainly spurred on by the impulsive Toad and his latest fads. But at its heart this is a tale of loyalty and friendship. The settings are so clearly drawn by Grahame; the animals' homes, the Wild Wood and the magnificent and imposing 'Toad Hall'. It is gentle and warm in parts, and fast-paced and exciting in others and I remember it being a real 'page-turner'. It has rightly earned its place in the classics of the 20th century and will continue to bring joy to its readers for years to come, I am sure. It holds a special place for me.

Birmingham Museums - Inspire 20 Art Competition Now Open!

This is the fifth year of Birmingham Museum's popular Inspire Art Competition.

With the current lockdown they want to put some positivity back in our lives and, working online, they are still welcoming submissions. They can’t wait to see what you come up with at this time, including all the different art-forms that are possible even while most of us are staying at home.

This year the competition is called What I Can See, it is designed to help us all think about things in our homes, gardens, skies, views, and even in our imaginations and thoughts. So what might this mean to you?

Your art submission could be a poem, still life response, a painting in the garden, portrait, photo, digital drawing or video, a mud sculpture, a pen drawing … there is no right or wrong. What I Can See is a way of sharing and communicating your ideas and energies to others at a time when it is needed the most.

Click here for further details and do let me know if you submit an entry.

Pastoral Message From Mr Webb

Dear Parents

The VE day celebrations last week saw many people sharing memories of events around the end of World War 2.  Many Crescent staff have been told about children interviewing grandparents or great-grandparents to enhance their own understanding of what it would have felt like.  For many of us our own childhood eras probably won't feature too significantly in school history lessons of the future.

However, it is more than likely that your great grandchildren will one day be interviewing your own children to find out more about the times we are all going through right now.  My greatest hope is that whilst they will clearly reference the sadness and the things that they missed, children now will also talk enthusiastically about how they kept learning, kept being the best they could be, how they sacrificed for the health of others and how they found ways of keeping up with friends and family members.  Many of them will talk of how we found ways to say thank you, protect the planet more, how we found ingenious ways of raising money or keeping spirits high.

We talk lots to the children in school about the qualities of being a "good person" (it's the basis of the school promise).  As we plan returning to school over upcoming weeks and months, staff will be telling the children how proud we are of them for all of this, pointing out the positives from all that seems negative, and I know you are doing it with them at home too.  Perhaps a point of discussion over this weekend with your children will be how we are all making history right now!

With all best wishes to you all,

Mr Webb

CLANG Of The Week

Another sunny week has helped keep us positive and motivated to get out for our daily exercise to look around at the beautiful flowers and hear the bird song just as Mr Thackway shared with us in our assembly this morning.

It  was heartwarming to see so many people engaging with the VE Day celebrations and the socially distancing street parties that showed we can connect with each other in difficult times.

Here's my CLANG of the week; I hope you've had time to think about your own wellbeing this week too!

CONNECT:
Being able to connect with neighbours through the VE Day celebrations and share some fun from a safe distance of course!

LEARN:
I loved listening to an interview by Esme in 3S with her great grandad who was only 14 when the war started and I learned what jobs he did and how he felt on VE Day.

ACTIVE:
Now we can meet up with one other person for a socially distanced walk, I had a lovely time with my friend Christina and I hope to see Ms Hanson too as it's strange not being with her everyday!

NOTICE:
Since being out more on our bikes, I've noticed how friendly other cyclists and runners are when you pass them and how lovely it is to share the fresh air.

GIVE:
I can't keep up with my black Labrador moulting in this warm weather. I'm giving him a brush daily but still....!  I hope the birds can use his fluff to make their nests nice and comfy.

Have a good week everyone! #stayhomestaysafe  #5waystowellbeing

Parents are asked to be vigilant when reading emails relating to the payment of school fees and any other items to the Foundation.

We continue to receive reports regarding spam emails.  The latest scam offers a large discount on fees for the coming academic year if paid immediately.

This is probably trying to take advantage of the fact that some independent schools have offered discounts for this term and that parents may therefore be more open to such a suggestion. You can always protect yourselves by only making payments to us in line with our normal, published methods.

Reception 2020 Challenges

I shared a video challenge with the children who are to join Reception Class in 2020.  The challenge was to go for a walk or look in your garden and find things from nature such as sticks, leaves, daisies, stones and create art with them or to plant some seeds and to watch them grow.  We had some wonderful creative work sent in:

  • Alice had wonderful fun responding to Mrs Emery's nature challenge.
  • Elliott made a picture using natural materials as suggested in Mrs Emery's video - it is of a rabbit! Elliott is really enjoying the challenges.
  • Eve went on a walk with her sister Florence to find things to use for her picture. We have been learning about dinosaurs and Eve then made a family of dinosaurs out of pebbles from the garden and used some of the flowers we found on our walk as food.
  • Flora collected nature on her walk with her Mummy and Poppy the dog. She made a picture of her grandma holding flowers and named all the different flowers she had collected.
  • Katie made a beautiful tree from leaves and twigs in the garden.
  • Max found lots of stones and sticks for his picture. He said he wanted to make the Earth and the sun. He found a nice marigold for the sun and used a dried twig for the rays. He stuck some green leaves and blue forget-me-nots on to ‘Earth’ and a piece of grass to represent Saturn. (He has been helping brother Edward make a model of the solar system, hence his interest). The only item we didn’t find on the day was a piece of natural jade which Mum dug up a couple of weeks ago which he put in for Mars. He had great fun arranging them all. We hope Mrs Emery likes the picture.
  • Nellie had a lot of fun with flowers and leaves creating her design.
  • Penelope loved the challenge and enjoyed sticking and glueing her picture.
  • Sophia found two rocks on her daily walk and asked if she could paint rainbows on them.  On our next walk, we will leave the painted rocks for our neighbours to find and bring a smile to their faces.
  • Uma went for a nature walk and found lots of leaves, flowers, twigs and made a picture.  She saw some sheep on the walk.  Uma has also been growing some herbs including rosemary, thyme, mint and oregano.

Thank you all, I have loved seeing all your work.  They all made me smile.

Many children recognise that it was wrong of Jack to steal from the Giant and that this behaviour wasn’t in keeping with our school promise to be good citizens.  In our expressive art and design work we created beanstalks in all sorts of wonderful ways.

Reception And Year 1 Outdoor Learning – Natural Art

Our activity this week took us outside to find natural bits and pieces and to then use them to create a picture or model. The children used all sorts of things – sticks, stones, leaves, flowers and pine cones with great imagination to produce some beautiful natural art.

Class 1E Design Their Coats Of Arms

Lots of fun was had in history this week when Class 1E learned all about shields. If you are head to toe in armour you need a way of identifying friend or foe and so family coats of arms were made.

We looked at the different shapes and what the different colours stood for. Reading levels were low in that time so symbols were used and they all had different meanings.

Some excellent mottos were added with colours and symbols to support them.

Class 3S - An Interview With My Great Grandad By Poppy Morris

On VE day, I Facetimed my Great-Grandad who lives in Felixstowe to ask him what he did on VE day. My Great-Grandad is my Mum’s Grandad and he is 90 years old. This is what I found out.

My Great-Grandad was 15 on VE day in 1945. At the time, he was living at Framlingham Boarding School, miles away from his mother. Sadly, his Father after surviving WW1, died from Pneumonia in 1943. His mother lived in the countryside so she was able to take in evacuees.

Luckily, his Granny lived close by to his school, so he was able visit her for tea.

On VE Day, when it was announced that the War was over, no one could believe it.

Great-Grandad said all the children began to lift up the lids of their desks and bang them loudly to celebrate. The teachers told the children that they were all allowed to go home and that there would be no school for a week!

The children were so happy!!

My Great-Grandad cycled to his Granny’s house, where he and his friends made plans to go to the near-by American Air Base.

When they got there, they all joined in the huge party. Great-Grandad said that there was a huge table laid out for the children, with all the foods that they could not get during the War. Things like Jam and Chocolate! There was a band playing and everyone was dancing.

He also told me something really naughty! He told me that some older students had set off fireworks in the teachers' toilets!

My Great-Grandad sent me a picture of himself in 1945 and he looks just like my Mum’s brother, my Uncle Haydn!!

I loved speaking to my Great-Grandad on Facetime, I really miss going to see them by the seaside.

Class 4M Become Storytellers

Class 4M have been so inspired by studying the fiction of David Walliams, that they have started the process of creating their own stories this week, based loosely on the themes in Mr Stink. They have drawn up their story plans and here are a few of them. We have tales of free-divers, dancers, inventors and best-selling authors, among others. I can't wait to read the final versions on Friday and I'll share some of them in next week's Courier.

Class 4M Life In The Indus Valley

Class 4M have been learning about everyday life for members of the Indus Valley Civilisation. The children have been showing their learning in a range of ways including Miss Corbin delivering a lesson on the subject and Evie presenting from her own Indus house which she had constructed in her kitchen.

It is wonderful to see the creativity of the children shining through during home learning and also the skills they are developing on Seesaw.

The photos show some of these Seesaw skills in use by Sachin, Stephanie, Katherine and James.

Class 5F - A Poem By Alyssa - A different Time

Alyssa and her family have been working hard this week on a poem poignant for this time in lockdown, I think you will agree it sums up life very well.

2020 has been a strange year
There’s so much on the news, to make us all fear
Covid 19 has spread across the earth
It has reminded us how much life is really worth

Our lives really changed almost overnight
The airports slowed till there were virtually no flights
Schools and businesses shut their doors
As saving lives was their vital cause

Life on lockdown is surreal
Every day things have a different feel
We stay at home, we play, draw and write
The highlight of our day is talking to loved ones on skype

From every corner of the globe
This terrible virus did explode
Affecting people  of all ages, colours and creeds
Exposing that we share common needs
To protect and preserve life
Life that is precious and worth the fight

In hospitals up and down our land
Doctors and nurses are taking a stand
Working on the front lines
Treating with love our sisters and brothers, fathers and mothers
We thank you for all your care
With a gratitude that we must share

Thankyou to the cleaners and care home staff
Working so selflessly on a tireless path
To all our key workers fighting Covid 19 head on
Please keep going, please keep strong

To the volunteers collecting shopping and prescriptions
Who are checking up on people battling the new restrictions
Thank you from the bottom of our heart
We long for the day when this is over and we can make a new start

Learning maths, science French and more
Home learning can make our brains sore!
But even if it is hard going
The amazing teachers keep our lessons flowing

Even though this virus is keeping us apart
We are trying to act sensible and smart
Rainbows popping up to show our support
For the amazing NHS who have fought

Heroic, awesome Captain T
Has given our world some victory
Walking 100 laps around his home
Proud to show we’re not alone

Yes, even though we are apart
We send lots of kisses and hearts
To our family, pets, and friends
Our love to them all never ends

One day we may look back and reflect on these days
How things used to be, acting in so many different ways
Everything is strange and seems a mystery
But hopefully this virus will be consigned to history

Year 5 and 6 Listen to Wartime Music

Years 5 and 6 were asked to listen to some wartime music and choose their favourite, explaining why they chose that particular one.

  • Jack said: I liked In The Mood by the Glenn Miller Orchestra because I prefer just the orchestra playing. The melody is jolly and uplifting. I particularly like when the music goes to piano, then goes up with a crescendo up to forte.
  • Marco said: I chose We'll Meet Again -  this song is about the men going of to war while the women stay home hoping they will come back and they meet once again. I like the message of the song, which is staying positive no matter what is going on around you. Because it says we WILL meet again. It kind of reminds me of the situation we are in now with my friends because we're hoping to see each other again.
  • Ollie said: I listened to lots of 1940s music and war music (and a radio programme with Winston Churchill telling everyone that the war was over). I really liked Wish Me Luck When You Wave Me Goodbye, There'll Be Bluebirds Over and the Big Band music from Glenn Miller. I listened to it when I was making a cake and bunting.

You can read more song choices on the photos attached.

Pupils Get Competitive With Sport

The children have been relighting their competitive fires at home this week, as all children have had the opportunity to take part in the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Virtual School Games.

They have been doing some sprinting and standing long jump at home. There are prizes up for grabs for the winners - we await the results.

Last week, the Years 4-6 children had an inter-school sitting throw competition. The winners were:

Years 5 & 6:

  • 1st George Bell 5.45m
  • 2nd Keshav Gupta 5.43m
  • 3rd Henry Corbin 4.80m

Years 3 & 4:

  • 1st Stephanie Bolton 10.00m
  • 2nd Charlotte Corbin 3.80m
  • 3rd Sachin Gupta 3.71m

Stephanie's monster 'Rory Delap' throw was videoed and so I can verify that it actually did happen. Great use of the whole of her upper body to generate power.'

Thanks

Isla Dissects Owl Pellets

Isla's Mum sent in some photos showing what she has been doing this week:

"Isla has been doing something a bit different with me this week - she has been helping me with my work for Warwickshire Wildlife Trust by dissecting a Barn Owl pellet! This was the subject of one of my blogs for work and Isla spent an hour carefully teasing out the bones.  I've attached some pictures - I hope they're interesting! She found the skulls of 2 shrews and 3 voles."

The blog post is here:

Wow this looks interesting Isla.  Thanks for sharing.

Tumi Performs In The Blessing

Last week Tumi participated in a virtual choir of children from around the world. They sang a worship song called A Blessing. Tumi managed to learn and record the song in less than an hour and the result is stunning.

Congratulations to Tumi for being part of such an amazing performance.
