Welcome to The Courier, Crescent School's electronic newsletter.

This week marked the first week of Home Learning and we have been impressed by all the wonderful work the children have been doing.

We are so proud of you all for embracing this new style of learning. There are plenty of great examples included in the newsletter this week.

Please do send in any stories and photos over the Easter break for our next edition.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents

It has been a week like no other. Working from home on a couple of days this week has proved quite challenging, both for me and the rest of the British workforce I expect. We are all finding new ways to get things done and it is amazing how much technology you can train yourself on in a short period of time, when you have no other option. We have probably done two years’ worth of training in the course of two weeks, and there is more to come. Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say.

On that theme, we have been working hard here to assess the home learning that we have put in place this week. All of the positive feedback is enormously appreciated, and all of the constructive criticism is equally useful, if not more so. In essence, my feeling is that the work set by the teachers has been of a very high standard and many of you have expressed this in your communications. My concern is around the marking and feedback that we then provide to lock in the progress. We are looking at solutions to this as we speak and we will use designated training days (virtual training of course) next week to develop these ideas further. We should be in a position quite soon to share how we intend to develop and improve this provision as home learning moves into a new term, which now seems inevitable.

As I have been stuck behind mine laptop for many hours this week, one bright note but has been very lovely emails pinging through with pictures the children have taken of emerging signs of spring in their garden. Many thanks for these. In my assembly this morning I gave my five top tips for how to occupy yourself peacefully during holiday. Please do send in examples of your children’s exploits along the lines I suggested and we will happily share them in the Courier on our return.

In terms of the broader picture, you don’t need me to tell you that we will be living with the effects of coronavirus in our working lives for some time to come. Nobody knows how long that will be but please rest assured that we are planning for every eventuality here. It will come as no surprise that we have sadly had to cancel the Year 3 trip to Whitemoor Lakes in April and other events will suffer. Whenever we do return to school we will look very closely at how we can make up for opportunities missed out on with events and day trips. For example, we will make sure that the Year 6 children have a chance for their traditional final farewells, whatever or whenever that happens. We’ll will be creative in our efforts to make up for lost time but first we must baton down the hatches and get through to the next phase.

We are entirely committed to the continued education of your children and will do everything we can to combine this with proper pastoral care and guidance. Our commitment to your children is, in my mind, a moral one and one which everyone here takes very seriously. I hope and believe that this is apparent in every single thing that the staff here do on a daily basis. I know you will have fears and anxieties of your own. I have the same ones. Please do share these and if I can be of any help at all I will be, as will the rest of the wonderful Crescent staff.

As parents and teachers the well-being of the children is always uppermost in our minds. Enjoy this opportunity to spend time with them over the Easter weeks and if this virus has taught us anything, it is that we should cherish all those things we hold most dear.

With that thought, I send you and your children my heartfelt good wishes and look forward to renewing our partnership next term and into the future.

Signs Of Spring

In my assembly on Tuesday I spoke about Spring and asked you to share your photos of the signs of Spring around you.

I have received the most wonderful emails and pictures telling me what the children have been doing to find the signs of spring.  Lots of you have been in your gardens and few examples are:

  • "We learnt about the lifecycle of a ladybird as one was found in the garden and learnt that in March ladybirds come out of hibernation to feed"
  • "We talked spring and looked at the new buds on the apple tree"
  • "We went for a walk around the garden and discussed some things that remind us of spring mainly the daffodils and blossom on our pear and apple tree. We discussed that lambs are born in the spring"
  • Can you see the photo that showed spring with a difference?!

I hope you enjoy the photos.

Crescent Donates Science Goggles To St Cross

Schools across England are being asked to donate science goggles and other apparatus to the NHS due to a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for doctors and nurses dealing with the coronavirus outbreak. Despite a major effort by the Government to deliver extra supplies they are just not arriving quickly enough.

The Crescent School was contacted by our local Hospital of St Cross. Staff at the hospital were having to share PPE equipment and they asked if the school had any protective equipment to spare as school-quality PPE would be better than no PPE at all.

The Crescent was only too happy to help and donated 18 pairs of Science and DT goggles for the nurses at St Cross to use. Science teacher Jo Byrne explains, “The nurses have been sharing equipment so they really appreciated our donation, the lady who came and collected the googles was incredibly grateful and said they would make a huge difference.”

Supporting each other is what really matters, and Crescent was delighted to help the NHS at this difficult time.

Welcome Reception 2020 To The Courier

We invited the children who will join us in Reception 2020 to share photos of what they had been learning this week.  We have loved hearing from them all and are delighted to welcome them to our Crerscent family.

  • Flora has been joining in with Fred's work
  • Finlay has been practising maths with his sisters
  • Hermione and Elliott joined their sisters being pirates
  • Evie has been creative at home
  • Beau watched Assembly with Barnaby ... they were both mesmerised!
  • Feranmi took advantage of the sunshine to nurture his plants
  • Uma loves arts and crafts and has been painting, colouring and making an Easter bonnet (albeit a little early).  She has also enjoying the beautiful sunshine in the garden with brother Shiv
  • Max has been counting, painting rainbows and planting potatoes with his brother Edward
  • Katie has been fully engaged in painting, role playing, baking (and eating) goodies and computer games
  • Lucas has been enjoying PE with Joe and his brother

Assembly Across the Airwaves

As the children continue their learning, in a very different way, the school is keen to ensure we all stay in touch with our Crescent family.

Every week Mr Thackway will share his assembly providing the parents and children with a friendly face and news about what is happening in our virtual school.

The first video was sent out on Tuesday and appears to have been a great success. Here are some of the lovely comments we have received:

"We wanted to thank you for the virtual assembly this morning which is an inspired idea! We all watched it over breakfast and it really lifted us all and set us on the right track for the day. Please please do consider doing more of these to help us stay connected."

"We really enjoyed assembly and learning about spring."

"We enjoyed Mr Thackway’s assembly very much (made me emotional!)"

"Thank you for that lovely assembly. It is very reassuring to see you, hear your voice and see the familiar Crescent School Promise sign. I'm sure it has helped all the children, not to mention the staff, to find some sense of normality amongst all the extraordinary things that we are having to cope with."

"Crescent School is very lucky to have such a strong and kind leader and I am sure I am not the only one to be very glad you are our Headmaster."

Thank you for all the messages of support, we will continue to record and share these assemblies with you.

If you would like a copy of this week's Assembly please contact Mrs Tucker.

Thank You And Farewell To Pat Lines

At the end of this term we say goodbye to Pat Lines, who is moving to Yorkshire to be nearer to her family.

Many of the children know Pat very well. Pat is a retired teacher with many years of experience and has supported the children with their reading here for a number of years. However Pat's support for our school community extends much further as Pat has also been a much respected and invaluable member of the governing body, both here at Crescent School and in the Princethorpe Foundation. Some of you may know that Pat's husband Nigel was in fact the Chair of Governors for number of years here at the Crescent during Huw Marshall's time in charge.

Throughout her 15 year association with the school, Pat has been a volunteer, she has never received any payment for all of the hard work and expertise she has shared so freely. Indeed, she has been an invaluable sounding board for me in my first three years in post and has played a key role in the staff recruitment we have carried out during that time.

Many, many thanks to Pat from everybody here, where she will be remembered very fondly. We wish her very well.

Best wishes

Joe Thackway

TT Rockstars

I hope everyone is enjoying this new website; I seem to have been challenged a lot this week! I would like to get leader boards started that we can then celebrate in the Courier. It seems that each class can have the speediest TT Rock Star and that gets you up the status board on the poster.

To get on this board you have to tackle the single player games - Garage, Studio & Soundcheck, the multi-player games do not count. These games also earn more coins than the multiplayer games too.

This week, speediest in each class are:

  • 1E - No one on the board yet
  • 2W - No one on the board yet
  • 3S - Grace M - Wannabe!
  • 4M- Aryan - Headliner!
  • 5F- Hany - Rock Legend!
  • 6W- Sienna - Rock Star!
  • 6Y - Ariana - Rock Star!

I have also set up a 'Battle' Thursday to Thursday, 'Girls Vs Boys' for the whole school. Battles add up any points as you play!

I will let you know who wins in the next Courier. Stay Calm and Keep Rocking!

Opportunities To Listen To Stories

I think stopping and listening to a good book is lovely, there are a few sites allowing free audiobooks through this time. Pleases take a look at:

David Walliams is releasing a FREE audio story every day for the next 30 days. It might help some parents out there to get their kids to quieten down and listen to a story whilst you get a few jobs done or just grab a cuppa in peace!

A message from Amazon auidble:

For as long as schools are closed, we're open. Starting today, kids everywhere can instantly stream an incredible collection of stories, including titles across six different languages, that will help them continue dreaming, learning, and just being kids.

https://stories.audible.com/start-listen

You can quiz on these, but the written word will be better as you will also be exposed to spellings too

Philosophy

Philosophy I hear you say? Surely this is really boring but no - if you chat to any of the children who come to my Philosophy club it is a great time to explore, question and often laugh, but the one thing you must do is listen to the ideas of others.

Each week I am  going to share a question or a story or a video that can prompt a discussion over your dinner table or whilst you are just sat chatting.

Let me know any of your thoughts to these questions.

Richard Harcourt has been appointed to the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
Mr Harcourt lives locally in Stretton on Dunsmore and has three children who all attended Princethorpe College.

In a career spanning some 40 years he travelled the world, including a four-year stint based in Canada, before finally retiring in 2018 as the Director of Operations at Rolls Royce. He now splits his time between non-executive work and his hobbies of golf, gardening and travelling.

Mr Harcourt, comments, “My children all attended Princethorpe College and benefitted hugely from the terrific learning environment the Foundation offers. I am therefore thrilled to be asked to join the Board of Trustees and to support the Foundation as it continues to develop and thrive.”

Eddie Tolcher, Foundation Bursar and Clerk to the Trustees said, “Richard will bring a wealth of commercial experience to the Foundation’s Governing Body. His experience, insight and advice will be very much appreciated.”

Pastoral Message From Mr Webb

I can hardly believe we are at the end of week 1 already!  This time last week I mentioned to you all how I believed that we could pull together as a special Crescent community through this.  I have to say that I and other staff have been wonderfully overwhelmed by the messages of support, the details of what the children have been doing and the ingenious ways of motivating one another.

I have seen children demonstrating their full range of learning skills - not just on paper but also outdoors, physically and creatively.

The stories of Crescent children going above and beyond to be good friends and citizens have strengthened us all. I know many of them have found alternative ways of communicating which is so important to us all as humans.

We challenged them to make us proud.  Achieved!

Of course, formal learning will not be set over the next three weeks of the Easter holidays but staff remain accessible to you.  Please do continue to communicate with us what has been happening in your families - children and parents keep letting us know your worries and/or your joys.  We will continue to circulate Courier updates.

Hopefully we will be starting to see some positive glimmers of international news by the end of the break.  Keep safe and I wish all of our families healthy days ahead.

Assistant Head

CLANG Of The Week

Every week I shall be sharing how I have been aware of my own wellbeing in this weird, new reality. I shall also be giving you some ideas of how you could take some time reflecting on how you too can follow the Five Ways To Wellbeing that we identified in our recent Wellbeing Day.

This week my top five ways to wellbeing have been:

  • CONNECT – I’ve set up Zoom so I can chat with my family, my friends and Class 3S for our PSHE lesson!
  • LEARN – I’ve learned what social distancing means and how to wash my hands to many different songs;
  • Be ACTIVE – I’ve cycled my usual 7km bike route each day this week but ready for something different;
  • Take NOTICE – I drove through the countryside with the roof down in the sunshine and noticed the huge number of lambs and was swooped over by a snowy owl!!
  • GIVE – I gave Miss Wren some photos to take with her to Cardiff that she was thrilled with.

So... can you identify your CLANG of the week? Some ideas for next week....

  • CONNECT – write a letter or video call your grandparents or a relative
  • LEARN – how to tie your shoelaces and/or tie for when we return to school
  • Be ACTIVE – commit to join in with Joe Wick’s PE lesson at 9am everyday online
  • Take NOTICE of all the spring changes like Mr Thackway mentioned in his assembly
  • GIVE – time to playing board games with your family and reading a good book

Around The Classes

Reception To Year 6 French

Everyone from Reception to Year 6 has worked hard in French this week and I have been impressed by both their effort and achievement.

A special mention for our Reception, Year 1 and 2 classes who have worked so well independently and creatively. A big thank you to the mums and dads too who have supported their children and engaged so well with the tasks, including making videos of their children.

As I teach my lessons towards the end of the week I will include articles in the following week's edition.

It is delightful to see and hear the children, and all the more when they are speaking French.

Reception - Rascals At Home

We have managed to keep our ‘Pirates’ topic in full flow in our week of home learning. One of the tasks the children were asked to do was to make a pirate mask to support their work in Expressive Art and Design.

It’s been wonderful to see the children’s creations – it’s hard to know who’s hiding behind some of them! See if you recognise any of these pirates.

Kian Celebrates The Persian New Year

The arrival of spring heralds the start of Norooz, the Persian New Year. Observed by people across the world in countries such as Iran, that were once part of the Persian empire. It has been commemorated for thousands of years.

Norooz is about welcoming spring, celebrating new births, the revival of nature and spreading messages of love and peace. It is celebrated each year at the exact start of the Spring Vernal Equinox.

Kian in Reception celebrated Norooz with his family. Together they laid a ‘HAFTSIN’ (Seven things beginning with the letter S) that all symbolise different hopes for the new year:

  • Sir (garlic): For good health
  • Senjed (sweet dry fruit of the lotus tree): For love and affection
  • Serkeh (vinegar): For patience and wisdom
  • Seeb (apples): For beauty
  • Samanu (wheat pudding): For sweetness of life and affluence
  • Somagh (crushed spice of berries): For the sunrise and the spice of life
  • Sabzeh (sprouted lentil grass): For rebirth and renewal of nature

There’s also Sekeh (coins) for prosperity and Tokhmeh Morgh (eggs) for fertility.

This year Kian’s family celebrated the:

  • Year 7042 based on Mitrai Aryan calendar
  • Year 3758 based on Zoroastrian calendar
  • Year 2579 based on unification of Persian Empire by Cyrus the Great

No-Rooz Mobarak (Happy New Year) Kian from all of us here at the Crescent School.

And thank you to Kian's family for sharing their celebrations with us all.

Class 1E Work Hard And Make Their Parents Proud

Having spoken to many of the parents this week by either phone or email, there is one very clear message, Class 1E have been working hard and are making their parents very proud.

In maths, they have focused on place value in tens and added a bit of money calculating into the mix.

There has been lots of core English skills taking place working on reading, phonics, handwriting and spelling as well as introducing a story mountain for the children to write their own story. These have started to come in to me and the children are doing an amazing job. They should all give themselves a ‘pencil sharpener’ and a ‘ketchup clap’ (they know what that is!).

There has been masses of creativity on show from making owls in art to Easter projects in RE and a fair amount of PE to keep physically fit.

A hard first week of home learning juggling it all but a strong sense of achievement.  A link to view the photos will be sent separately.

Well done Class 1E – you make me very proud!

Class 6Y - Home Learning

6Y have made a great start to home learning this week. I've been really pleased to see photos of well organised work spaces and hear all about the great work that's being produced. Many of the children have enjoyed being responsible for their own timetables and have been working well, independently, which I know will be a great help to hard working parents.

Having the beautiful sunshine has really helped with break time and lunchtime in the Yates' home school. We've been cutting our lunchtime shorter than at school so that we can finish our day earlier, leaving plenty of time for playing and finding photos of spring around us to send to Mr Thackway. These have included: Perry the pony being in the field without his winter rug, daffodils coming into bloom and the hedgerows starting to turn green.

Whilst we have all been missing our Crescent family this week, we have been practising daily gratitude focusing on our blessings and are most grateful for the outdoor space we are so fortunate to have. What have you been grateful for this week?

Year 6 English

It has been great to share some of the English the children have been achieving this week, one lesson was about creating your own grading system. These pieces are by Freya Somerset and Joseph Yates

Another lesson was to create a potion (we have been studying Harry Potter) I received ones that made people as tall as a tree, got rid of wasps and gave wishes to name a few.

Two of my favourites are:

  • One for those who suffer gluten intolerance by Ewan
  • To rid the world of the Coronavirus  by Eleanor
