Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Mr Thackway's weekly letter.

Dear Parents and Friends of the School

It was lovely to see so many families attending the Barnaby Football Tournament on Saturday last week. We avoided some slightly scary looking weather reports and it was a relaxed and joyful morning, enjoyed by adults and children alike. Many thanks to all of those parents who came along and those who helped out as well.

It seems at times as though, at least to me, that school years flash by in the blink of an eye and we are in fact nearing the end of another one, with lots of standout events appearing on the near horizon. I have written to you separately this evening with news of next year‘s teaching team, as well as the details of our upcoming Welcome Evening on Thursday 26 June.

As well as this important event, some of the others to note are move-up day, summer concerts, Pre-Prep sports days, the Year 6 play and leavers’ service. I do hope you are able to attend some if not all of these events.

I should also of course mention the sports day earlier in the week. This took place, as has become traditional, over at Princethorpe College. Again, parental attendance was excellent and the children felt they had a real gallery to observe and appreciate their exploits and achievements. It would be easy to talk about winners and record-breaking times, heights and distances, but the thing that struck me more than anything was the excellent behaviour of the children. It was quite a long session but the children remained enthusiastic and supportive of one another throughout the morning. Although it must be said we are actually very good at winning as a school, it is this mutual respect and goodwill that is genuinely at the heart of our School Promise.

I hope you have a great weekend everyone.

With all best wishes

Welcome Evening Invitation

All parents are invited to the Welcome Evening.

Thursday 26 June 2025 - 7.00pm to 8.20pm

Dear Parents

As we come to the end of the academic year you will have noted in the calendar that this year’s Welcome Evening is planned for Thursday 26 June from 7.00pm to 8.20pm.  All parents of children who are attending the school next year are warmly invited to this important information evening and opportunity to meet staff and fellow parents.

The evening will last for around an hour and 20 minutes and will be divided into two sections. In one of these, you will spend some time in the hall with me, hearing some general messages about our exciting plans for the year ahead. In the other part of the evening you will meet your child’s form teacher in their new classroom and hear in more detail about day-to-day provision and arrangements.

To allow things to run smoothly, we have arranged the evening to run as follows:

New Reception, Year 1, 2 and 3

New Year 4, 5 and 6

Please enter by the main entrance at front of school

Please enter by the pupil entrance next to the field

7.00pm

to

 7.40pm

Presentation in the hall with refreshments

Meet the teacher in new classroom (guides will be on hand)

7.40pm

to

8.20pm

Meet the teacher in new classroom

Presentation in the hall with refreshments

We will be filming my headteacher’s talk and this will be available for viewing after the event. This means that if you have a child in both sections of the school, you have the option of attending both of the teacher talks and watching my talk at another time.

The school playground will be open for parking from 6.45pm and there will be plenty of signage around to point you in the right direction.

Please confirm attendance via the link below, by Monday 23 June 2025:

I look forward to seeing you on the evening.

Important Information

New Head Pupils Announced

This year's Head Pupil's are...

This year 15 children from the Year 5 class put themselves forward as potential candidates for next year's head pupil roles. They all wrote letters expressing how they felt their experiences and skills would make them possible choices for the role.

The children then read their letters to the class and to me, which was followed by a whole class vote. This is something we do every year, but I was particularly touched this year by the honesty and passion that the letters contained. It was wonderful to hear just how much the school meant to so many of the children and also to hear about their own personal achievements and goals.

Following this process I am delighted to announce that the head pupils for next year will be Theo and Lilah. Theo and Lilah were announced to the school in assembly this morning but the official handover from this year's head pupils will take place at the Leavers’ Service at the end of term.

The other children in the class were very quick to offer their congratulations to the two successful candidates and everyone wished them good luck in there new positions.

Music Lesson Timetable

Please check the timetable for your child's music lesson.

Please see below to view the music lesson timetable:

Music lessons - 16 June 25

Please note the following:

  • The timetable changes every week. Lessons are rotated as we try to avoid children missing the same lesson each week, though sometimes this is unavoidable if there are trips, matches and events to work around. If a teacher teaches on more than one day, your child's lesson could be on any of those days. Lessons in bold type are in fixed slots and therefore do not rotate, though, again, on occasions we may have to swap them around to avoid clashes with events.
  • The music staff will always try to reschedule lessons missed because of a school event, however lessons missed because of illness or not having an instrument in school cannot be made up.
  • If you know your child is not going to be in school for their lesson for any reason, please do let me know as early as possible and I will try to work around it, though this cannot be guaranteed.
  • Lessons before school and during lunchtime are prioritised to Year 5 pupils.
  • Half a term's (ie five lessons) notice is required to stop having lessons, or payment of half a term's fees in lieu of notice.

Please send all enquiries about music lessons to me juliebarnes@crescentschool.co.uk rather than the individual music teachers.

Foundation Pupils Make Plans For A Mock Climate Conference

Pupils from Crescent School’s Green Team visited Princethorpe College on Wednesday 11 June to meet with their Planet Princethorpe team. It was the first time that the schools’ eco teams had met so they began the session by sharing their environmental activities and achievements within their respective schools. Pupils then broke into mixed school groups to generate ideas and activities for a Foundation Schools’ Mock Climate Conference that will take place alongside the United Nations COP30 that is taking place in November this year.

Pupils’ passion for the environment was clear to see with lots of creative ideas for conference activities that would raise awareness, educate and engage the wider school communities with sustainability. From a headmasters’ question and answer panel to environmental competitions and games, hearing from external speakers, to planting activities, setting recycling challenges to climate conversations, it was great to see our young people engaging actively and coming up with so many innovative and great ideas.

It was a very productive meeting for all involved. It was inspiring to see pupils' enthusiasm for tackling climate change.

Year 4 Treated To A Special Performance Of College's Latest Musical Theatre Show

Year 4 visited Princethorpe College on Wednesday 11 June to watch their Lower School Musical Theatre production of Newsies Jr. The one act musical telling the true story of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy in New York who rallied young workers from across the city to strike against unfair conditions and fight for what's right!

Featuring 40 pupils from Years 7 to 9, the open rehearsal took place in their purpose-built Clarkson Theatre and before the performance the children were delighted to catch up with some of our Crescent alumni who are starring in the show.

Huge thanks to Princethorpe for inviting us over to watch their rehearsal, the singing was incredible, the dancing amazing and everyone really enjoyed  the show. We hope they have all enjoyed their performances this week!

Learning Mentors Complete Final Reviews

Today saw pupils' final meetings with their Learning Mentors for the academic year. Children proved that they have been working to achieve their targets by showing work from their books and discussed how they felt their learning has gone this year. Please do ask them how their review meeting went.

We are delighted with how this initiative continues to engage children from Years 1 to 6 with their learning. The mentor meetings have proven to be a powerful way for children to realise where they are at in their attainment and how they can progress their learning by taking ownership of their personal 'next steps'.

Well done to everyone involved.

Crescent Family Wolf Run

Crescent children and parents take part in the Wolf Run in memory of Barnaby and Chris Williams.

It was busy weekend remembering Barnaby and Chris for the Crescent family. After a morning of football fun on Saturday, many children, parents and friends headed to Stanford Hall for the Summer Wolf Run. Dressed in bright pink, as Chris liked to do, the Williams Warriors waded through pools of mud, under cargo nets, along climbing walls and over slippery forest paths. The children and accompanying adults completed 6km and some of them even went again in the afternoon to do the 10km adult run - Warriors indeed!

Well done to all of our Crescent children who took part, raising money for a charity so close to all our hearts - Brain Tumour Charity; there's still time to donate if you'd like to!

Romeo and Juliet

Year 6 Parents are invited to book tickets for Romeo and Juliet.

Dear Year 6 Parents

Tuesday 24 June 2025 at 6.30pm

Two families at war, two teenagers in love-whose side are you on?

Year 6 are excited to share with you their version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The Montagues (Romeo’s lot) and the Capulets (Juliet’s family)  have been at war for many years and no one even knows why anymore. Romeo and Juliet fall in love at a party thrown by her father to try and forget about all the bad feelings but things don’t run smoothly for this naive couple.

Rehearsals have been challenging and intense but this immersive play promises to be a fantastic performance.

We invite you to choose a side - are you a Montague or Capulet? Please wear a small token of colour to indicate your choice, either red (Montagues) or blue (Capulets) in order for the children to know who they are interacting with. (If your child is a Montague, it would be advisable to be a Montague as the play is on two sides and we can seat you appropriately for a good view of your child and vice versa)

The playground will be open for parking and refreshments will be served from 6.15pm.

Please book your tickets (4 per family) by Sunday 22 June 2025:

Year 5 Brain Training

Current Year 5 children are invited to attend Brain Training in August.

Dear Year 5 Parents

As you will no doubt be aware, the local authority 11+ exams for entry into Year 7 in 2025 are scheduled to take place on 13 and 14 September 2025. Registration for the exam has already opened on the Warwickshire.gov website.

With this in mind, we would like to invite this year’s Year 5 children in for two days of Pre-Season Brain Training Sessions on Thursday 28 August and Friday 29 August 2025. The sessions will run from 9.00am until 12.45pm each day. These sessions are entirely optional and are designed to prepare the children primarily for the grammar school exams, but also for any other entrance exams they may take later in the term.

The children will spend each morning with their familiar Crescent teachers, including Ms Forth, Mrs Webb, Ms Clark and Mr Adkins, getting them back into gear and ready for their exams. Each day there will be taught sessions focusing on the four strands of the 11+; verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, Maths and English comprehension. Needless to say, these skills will also be useful for their Princethorpe exams on Saturday 8 November, as well as any other independent school exams they may be entered for.

Children will be expected to arrive in school smartly dressed with a mid-morning snack. They do not need to wear school uniform. These sessions will be in addition to the revision packs that we send home at the end of the Summer Term. I am pleased to say that there will be no charge for attendance.

Best wishes

Each week we select two readers from each class who have stood out to us as demonstrating one or more of these skills or who have made really great progress over the previous few weeks. It's a lovely way for the children to know that we recognise and celebrate their success.

Around The Classes

3SS Maths

3SS created their own 'Potato Pals' in preparation for our Maths lesson where the learning objective was to compare and measure weights in multiples of 100g. Once designed we passed around different standardised weights before estimating whether our potato was lighter or heavier than 100g.  We then continued to add weights to the balance scales to see if our predictions were right.

Sports Day Was A Record Breaking Success

Crescent School’s Key Stage 2 Sports Day took place on Tuesday 10 June on Princethorpe College’s playing fields. Sports Day is always super fun for everyone at school and race after race, event after event our young athletes didn’t disappoint, as they leapt, threw and sprinted to make this year’s Sports Day another record-breaking success.

Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6 competed separately in 60m and 150m sprints, a middle distance 600m run, the Long Jump, High Jump and the Howler Throw plus two new events this year, the Shot Putt and for Years 3 and 4 only the Speed Bounce. Sports Day was completed with the always hotly contested House Relay Races.

A very successful morning of sport saw plenty of new school records set including:

On the track:
Year 4 - 600m - Joshua J in 2:11:13 minutes
Year 5/6 - 600m - Kian G in 2:12:95 minutes

At Crescent, Sports Day isn’t just about the competition, it is also all about the participation. On the day every child takes part and, most importantly, every child has fun. As is always the case the children’s behaviour was impeccable, they offered support and encouragement to each other and congratulated and commiserated with good heart. True Olympic spirit on show all round.

At the end of a very busy morning, Mr Thackway was delighted to announce the House results and to present the trophies. It was a very close affair decided only on the last relay races.

A big thank you to all of the staff involved in organising and running the event, both from the Crescent and from the Princethorpe Foundation.

Thank you also to all the parents and grandparents who came along to cheer the children on.

More photos from the event will be shared with parents next week.

U10 And U11 Girls' Cricket V King Henry VIII

Match report from Mrs McCollin.

U11 Girls had a very close and competitive match with some solid fielding, speedy bowling and wickets taken,  King Henry’s put together a score of 250 for 4 for us to chase.  Despite some wonderful batting and a fabulous partnership between Roisin and Sophie, Crescent fell short by 5 runs scoring 246 for 3.

POM’s awarded to Roisin – Batter, Sophie – Bowler

U10 Girls gave a solid performance from the U10s taking on KHVIII U11 B team. King Henry’s won the toss and opted to field first putting Crescent in to bat. Some great batting, with Ella finding the boundary twice in her innings, saw Crescent gain a total of 242 for 4.

Great bowling from all students and some lovely backing up in the field from all however King Henry VIII had some bit hitters who managed to put a total of 284 for 2 on the board.

A much-improved performance, showing great growth and development.

POM’s Isabella Bowler, Amber Batter and Esme – Fielder.
