Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Mr Thackway's weekly letter.

Dear Parents and Friends of the School

I write to you from my sunny office here at school, having completed an excellent morning of training for the teachers and staff. We covered lots of fascinating subjects, from better lunch times to global sustainability goals, not to mention looking ahead to our plans for next year.

This all comes at the end of a really action-packed spring term, where the children and staff have enjoyed a rich and varied diet, both inside the classroom and out. We finished in style this week with a hugely enjoyable Easter Service yesterday, which made a fitting encore to the spring concert of Monday afternoon. One new event this year was a showcase for the parents in Year 4 of the activities their children got up to on their residential trip to Ingestre Hall. I nearly forgot to mention the annual geography house final that we had on Tuesday as well, leading one particular parent in Year 6 to comment to me that the school had begun to feel like a second home for the week.

All of which leads in very nicely to the Easter holiday that now lies in wait, a chance for everyone to recharge batteries and set our sights anew for the third and final term of the year. We will see you all again on Monday 28 April, and no doubt many of the children will have wonderful tales to tell of their holiday adventures.

Mandy and I are travelling to the Lake District for few days hill walking and pub lunches, hopefully with the sun shining above us. I say that with some trepidation, as anyone with experience of the Lake District will know that the weather can be capricious at best, which is quite a mild way of describing it. However, when the sun does come out there's nowhere quite like it.

Whatever you have planned I hope it goes well and you get the chance to do some stimulating and interesting activities with the children, visiting museums, spending time in nature or discovering new interests. This time in spring is such a perfect opportunity to do all of those things.

Have a great holiday everyone.

Best wishes

Outdoor Learning and Forest School replace swimming in Trinity Term.

We are looking forward to the our Outdoor Learning programme for all of the children across the school from Years 1 to 6. This will replace swimming this term and will take place each week and in the same slot on the timetable.

Outdoor Learning will consist of a combination of Forest School activities as well as orienteering, team building and leadership skills training. This is a structured and fully planned series of activities that will develop collaborative work skills while enhancing children's growth mindset in problem solving situations. It will also give them the opportunity to learn and work outdoors during the warmer period of the year.

What to bring into school to wear:

Forest School

Pupils will need:

  • a long sleeved t-shirt
  • long bottoms
  • a change of trainers and socks
  • a pair of gloves to be able to safely take part in the activities
  • their school coat or send in a suitable waterproof coat

All of this needs to be put in a named bag that can be left on their peg for the half  term. Please ensure all items of home clothes are named.

Music Lesson Timetable

Please check the timetable for your child's music lesson.

Please see below to view the music lesson timetable and the music exam timetable:

Music lessons - 28 April 2025

Please note the following:

  • The timetable changes every week. Lessons are rotated as we try to avoid children missing the same lesson each week, though sometimes this is unavoidable if there are trips, matches and events to work around. If a teacher teaches on more than one day, your child's lesson could be on any of those days. Lessons in bold type are in fixed slots and therefore do not rotate, though, again, on occasions we may have to swap them around to avoid clashes with events.
  • The music staff will always try to reschedule lessons missed because of a school event, however lessons missed because of illness or not having an instrument in school cannot be made up.
  • If you know your child is not going to be in school for their lesson for any reason, please do let me know as early as possible and I will try to work around it, though this cannot be guaranteed.
  • Lessons before school and during lunchtime are prioritised to Year 5 pupils now and Year 6 lessons have moved to being during class time.
  • Half a term's (ie five lessons) notice is required to stop having lessons, or payment of half a term's fees in lieu of notice.

Please send all enquiries about music lessons to me juliebarnes@crescentschool.co.uk rather than the individual music teachers.

Crescent's Spring Concert Entertained Everyone

Crescent School's Spring Concert took place on Monday afternoon, with the school hall packed with parents eager to be entertained by an afternoon of fine music and song. They were not disappointed!

Brass Group opened the concert, belting out two pieces confidently, the theme from James Bond and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. The breadth of instruments and standard of play impressing all. They were followed by a mix of instrumental solos and music group performances, all showcasing their talent, hard work and dedication.

Wacky Music had great fun performing Drunken Sailor. Orchestra were amazing, they performed two pieces from their recent Foundation workshop, Fossils and Bright Eyes. While the two Flute Groups played a mix of pieces including two written especially for them, Flute Chat and Spring Is Here.

Years 3 and 4 enthusiastically sang their hearts performing three songs from the Heroes Of Troy.

Performing solos in the concert, many of them exam pieces, were Harry on Saxophone, Sophia on piano, Isabel on trumpet, Lilah on guitar, Lily on violin, Alice on flute and Matthew on recorder.

The concert concluded with a powerful performance by the Choir. Pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 sang four pieces enthusiastically, Sing Together, The Glory Of Love, Someone You Loved and Try Everything.

Our enormous thanks and congratulations go to all Crescent School's accomplished performers who took to the stage in front of their proud parents and of course to all their teachers and Director of Music, Julie Barnes who have helped them achieve so much.

Grow With Us Welcomes Pre-Schoolers For Fun In The Sun

We held our Forest School stay and play session on Monday after school. This was a new event in our calendar designed to welcome the children who are due to start Reception at Crescent School in September 2025 for some fun in the sun. The youngsters enjoyed a scavenger hunt with Mrs Noyce and then a hands-on activity planting sunflower seeds with Mrs Dowling and Mrs Pullen. Parents and little ones got to meet some of the teaching staff and senior leaders and to explore the school’s dedicated outdoor learning area. We hope everyone enjoyed the activities.

We look forward to seeing the youngsters again in June for Move Up Morning, when they will meet the rest of their classmates and teachers.

We still have limited spaces available for Reception 2025, so if you know of anyone interested in applying for a place, do please ask them to contact our Registrar, Mrs Becky Witcomb on 01788 523851 or email admissions@crescentschool.co.uk

St Andrew's Win House Geography Challenge

Crescent School’s annual House Geography competition took place on Tuesday morning and it was a hotly contested affair. Pupils in Year 6 have been working hard in their lessons, learning the mountains, seas, rivers, countries and capitals of the world. They have participated in regular quizzes to test their knowledge with the highest scorers earning themselves the right to represent their House.

Teams of four pupils took on eight rounds of challenging questions. It proved a closely fought competition with the three Houses neck and neck throughout and hardly a mark dropped between them all. Their geography knowledge was just incredible. It was so close that the quiz had to go to sudden death!

This year it was St Andrew’s House that just pipped St George’s and St David’s. The blues were delighted to be back on winning form, reclaiming the trophy once again.

Many congratulations to all and especially to the Blue team,  it was a super event, and the best of luck to Year 5 when your turn comes around next year!

LOL Theatre Company Production Of The Tale Of Peter Rabbit

This Easter LOL Theatre Company family friendly theatre production of The Tale of Peter Rabbit is being performed at Princethorpe College's Clarkson Theatre.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit
Wednesday 9 April - 2.30pm and Thursday 10 April - 2.30pm and  4.00pm

As part of the Foundation's drive to increase non-fee income, our Commercial Enterprise Team are delighted to be hosting LOL Theatre Company's lovingly adapted production of The Tale of Peter Rabbit in The Clarkson Theatre in the run up to Easter.

When young Peter Rabbit disobeys his mother and enters the forbidden garden belonging to Mr McGreggor, he indulges himself with lettuce, green beans and radishes, however he soon starts to feel sick and goes in search of some parsley to soothe his stomach ache. Who does he encounter when he ventures further into the vegetable patch? None other than Mr McGreggor himself! After a frantic chase, he loses his clothes and his sense of direction. Will Peter Rabbit escape Mr McGreggor's clutches and return home unharmed? More importantly, will he learn his lesson and listen to his mother's warnings next time? Let's hope so!

This 45-minute family friendly production is based on the classic short story by Beatrix Potter and teaches about the importance of listening to warnings, doing the right thing and facing the consequences of your actions. Recommended for ages 4 and above.

This enchanting theatre show brings Beatrix Potter’s beloved characters to life!

As part of their preparation for secondary school transition, we will be taking the Year 5 class to our Foundation senior school, Princethorpe College on Tuesday 29 April for a ‘Step Up To Secondary School’ Taster Day.

The dedicated Taster Day will begin at 9.30am with the children transported to the College by minibus. Pupils will experience a variety of classroom sessions, a tour of the school and a question and answers session with current pupils. Break and lunch will be provided and there is no charge for the day.

At the end of the afternoon, parents are invited to a Parents’ Information Session and optional tour of the school. The session will commence at 4.15pm and finish at approximately 5.30pm for those who would like a tour. Light refreshments will be served. Grove du Toit, Princethorpe’s Headmaster, along with other key members of staff, will be on hand to talk to you about the College, its ethos and vision and to answer any further questions you might have about the admissions process for Foundation pupils who are now able to take advantage of the Early Offer Scheme. For those parents who are unable to attend the Parents’ Information Session, your child will be transported back to school for 3.30pm. Children whose parents are collecting them from Princethorpe will have an extra lesson before their parents arrive.

This event is well timed to give pupils and parents a good feel for the College before the registration deadline for the Early Offer Scheme on Tuesday 6 May.  Early offers will be made to Foundation pupils on Thursday 12 June as appropriate.

If you have any queries regarding the Early Offer Scheme please feel free to contact the College’s friendly Admissions Team, Cathering Rogers, Registrar, and Georgia Newborough, Assistant Registrar, on 01926 634201/297 or email admissions@princethorpe.co.uk.

Pre-Prep Reading Certificates

Reading Certificates for Pre-Prep.

A really important part of life in Pre-Prep is building a love of reading. We are developing the children's phonics skills, reading fluency, expression, style and comprehension. Each week we select two readers from each class who have stood out to us as demonstrating one or more of these skills or who have made really great progress over the previous few weeks. It's a lovely way for the children to know that we recognise and celebrate their success.

This week's reading superstars are:

  • Reception - Eris and Kaira
  • Year 1 - Clementine and Nifemi
  • Year 2 - Alex and James

This term we have been exploring what is like to live like a Buddhist and finding out about their key beliefs and practices beyond the story of how Siddhartha Gautama became Buddha. As a reflection task, the children all thought of things around them that they are thankful for and made paper flowers that ‘magically’ bloomed when placed in water.

4W Maths

In Maths, the children have been creating ‘angle art.’ Thinking about how they could use obtuse, acute and right angles to create a fun piece of art. Some chose to create a picture, some a fan and others chose to create an abstract piece. There were no rules, only that acute angles had to be orange, obtuse-green and right angles were pink. I’m sure you’ll agree that their creations are lovely.

Finally, they have made their very own mini version of the book. Here are some of the pupils, proudly showing their work.

Year 5 English

It is important that the children understand how to use punctuation correctly. We learn the skills; we practise them and then we try and use them. Part of this process is also explaining why they have used them - this shows mastery of their knowledge.

Year 6 Music

British Science Week

Pupils in Years 2 to 6 created a 'trashion' outfit from recycling materials.

As part the 'Adapt and Change' theme for British Science Week, pupils looked at the world of fashion and learnt that, like in all industries, designers are working hard to reduce waste and use sustainable and recyclable materials. Then pupils in Years 2 to 6 took items from our recycling in school and created a 'trashion' outfit including a hat, bag and shoes. Each class designed and created their own item, which when combined made a truly impressive designer statement!

Crescent U9s vs Bablake U9s 'A'

Football match report from Bablake.

Crescent U9s enjoyed a very sunny trip over to Bablake on Tuesday, and although the results didn't go our way, battled well, played some super football and learned some valuable lessons.

In all three games Crescent paid the price for being a little slow to start, conceding early goals and although they improved superbly as the games went on, were never able to find equalising goals in return.

Once again though all of the U9s greatly impressed their coaches with their resilience, determination and team-spirit, never letting their heads drop and battling until the final whistle.

Well done to the entire squad, with special mentions for Walter, Jack, Catherine and Uma whose effort levels were nothing short of exemplary.
