4 October 2024

Welcome to The Courier, Crescent School's electronic newsletter.

Today is our Open Corridors event for parents. We hope you enjoy looking around the school and seeing the children’s beautiful work on display.

This week, in school, we have celebrated World Cultures, with an assembly on Nigeria Independence Day, and our dedicated World Culture off-timetable day.

We have just heard the the U10 Girls have taken the Gold Medal in the ISA Football. Conceding only one goal across the whole tournament. Well done to them all!

Do read on to see what else has been happening in school this week.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents and Friends of the School

A bit like the old football manager’s cliché, it has been a week of two halves on the weather front, with unceasing torrential rain eventually giving way to welcome clear blue skies for Thursday and Friday. Let's just hope it can continue into the weekend (apologies if I have just put the kybosh on it by saying that).

Today we have enjoyed a special atmosphere in the school with our World Culture Day. This has been in the planning for some time, and we were all delighted to get it off the ground today, with the children contributing so much by wearing a wide range of wonderful outfits and costumes that meant something special to them. Many thanks to all of you for supporting them in this and making the day such a colourful and exciting one.

We had got things off to an early start with our Nigeria Day assembly on Wednesday, and today we have enjoyed exploring and learning about cultures from around the globe, with plenty of opportunities for active children engagement and lots of fun as well. With open corridors to follow, we can reflect on a really exciting Friday in school. Of course, this all forms part of our wish to make all children and parents feel welcome, and for school to be a place where we can celebrate each other's heritage and uniqueness.

One of the key three prongs of the School Promise is being a ‘good citizen’, and I believe developing a healthy interest and joy in sharing cultures is such an important part of that. Another part of course is the fund raising that we do for a range of charities throughout the year. We raised lots of money in our Macmillan coffee morning a week ago, so many thanks for help with that. At the moment we are asking parents to donate any spare provisions that you might have for our Rugby Foodbank Harvest Collection. This collection is still very much open and if you'd like to send in any tins or packets of food that you could spare before our harvest services next week, these would be very gratefully received. I know that the volunteers who run the foodbank, not to mention the many people who rely on their services, will be really grateful for anything that you might be able to spare.

I do hope to see many of you coming along to those events, and also to the first round of parent meetings that begin next week. These will give you a chance to meet up with your child's form teacher and find out how they are settling into their new class and their new year in school. I hope you find these meetings helpful and informative.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Important Information

School Attendance Update

Arriving on time for school and attending each day are a key part of making school a postive and productive experience for the children.

We would like to thank you for your continued commitment to ensuring that your child maintains an excellent level of attendance and punctuality.

As a school, we in turn, commit to continuing to provide a school where children are happy to be each day in a safe, calm and supportive environment.  Just as a polite reminder, we know that children settle better when they are on time:- school gates open at 8.15am each morning in advance of the start of day bell ringing at 8.40am.  Early Birds continues to be available from 7:45am.

We remain in full partnership with both the children and yourselves as parents to remove any barriers to attendance through open and supportive communication.

Seesaw - For Classwork And Homework

Hopefully, you have noticed that we have been using Seesaw a little more this year... we absolutely love it as a way to not only offer pupils alternative ways of recording their work, such as making a video rather than writing, but also as a way of sharing their fantastic work with you the proud parents! This has, however, led to a little confusion around Seesaw and homework, as we also occasionally use it for this too!

Please assume that anything not called HOMEWORK specifically in the title, is work to be completed in class and doesn't need to be finished off at home. Obviously, if your child has completed any extra work because they wanted to, or have taken a real interest in the topic, we'd love to see it and Seesaw is an ideal tool to share it... just upload it to their journal!

Any further questions or queries, please don't hesitate to email me or Ms Forth.

Afterschool Important Information

Just a reminder with regards to some key information with regards to After School:

Session Times

  • First session 3.45pm to 4.45pm - drink and biscuit given when child arrives
  • Second session 4.45pm to 5.45pm - light snack and drink provided at about 5pm.

Important - in order to guarantee a light snack is available for your child please ensure that you book in before 10am on the day they are due to attend. This is to allow the kitchen the time to prepare the required amount of food for each evening as this needs to be done before they start preparing and serving your child's lunch. If you are unable to do this, we will try our best to provide your child with some food, normally this is crudités and some crisps/popcorn.

Collection
When collecting your child please use the intercom to call through and we will release the gate for you. Please do not go let anyone else through the gate, even if you know the adult, unless they have talked to a member of staff.

Proceed around to the collection door ensuring you close both gates after yourself, likewise when you are leaving, please close both gates and do not let anyone through the main gate unless they have been cleared to enter. We are unable to call through to the intercom so if it cuts out we are not being rude it has just timed out, please just call back through and we will answer.

All people who collect the children need to be on the approved collection information for that child. If an adult needs to be added to the list, please email the office with this information so they can amend the list. For one off collections, please ensure that an email with approval to release the child has been sent to the office and form tutor.

If you are going to be late to collect your child, please phone and let us know.

Xmas4schools Christmas Cards - Deadline 15 October 2024 - Reminder

We are purchasing our fundraising Christmas cards from Xmas4schools. Your child brought home an order card last Friday, that has the ordering details on one side and the actual space where the design must be on the other.

This year, we will choose one of the designs as our school Christmas card, rather than sending a separate design template. Mr Thackway will announce these in Assembly.

Instructions for completing the form:

Please fill in details and keep to the class name as RP, 1Q, 2E, 3LS, 3SS, 4C, 4W, 5F or 6W. Also, there is a price guide as to what products you will be able to buy when the design is complete.

The design guidelines are:

  • Do not go too near the edge as the printer will cut it off - you must be 1cm away all around
  • Do use felt tip, ink, pencil crayons, gel pens - brighter the better - pale does not show up
  • Do use collage if you want - but well stuck down and flat
  • Do use glitter glue if you want
  • Do not use sprinkle glitter- it falls off!
  • Do not use large areas of metallic finishes - it will not look shiny
  • Do cover up as much of the white space as you can
  • Do make any text big as the process will reduce the size of the design

The design card with details, must be returned as soon as possible. The deadline back in school is Tuesday 15 October 2024 for judging. We cannot accept or send any late orders after Wednesday 16 October.

FoC will receive a donation for every product ordered, so do get designing!

Please click on the photos in the gallery which provide information.

Season's Greetings!

Individual And Sibling Photographs Proofs

On Monday, all pupils who were present in school had their portrait photographs done by Raymond Dillon Photography. Today, Friday, your child(ren) should bring home their personal QR code.  You will be able to log in to www.pics4schools.com to view and order your photos.

Portrait photos should be accessed with the oldest child's QR code. You can order, pay and have your photos delivered straight to your home. If you would like them delivered to school then the deadline is Wednesday 30 October 2024; late orders will not have that option.

If, for some reason, your child does not bring it home after a few days (having rechecked bags and desks!), get in touch with me (not Mrs Tucker as she does not have access to this information) at BryonyForth@crescentschool.co.uk and I can get you another copy.

Many thanks

Music Lesson Timetable

Please see below to view next week's Music Lesson timetable:

Music lessons - 7 October 2024

The music lesson timetable will be published in the Courier every Friday. Please note the following:

  • The timetable changes every week. Lessons are rotated as we try to avoid children missing the same lesson each week, though sometimes this is unavoidable if there are trips, matches and events to work around. If a teacher teaches on more than one day, your child's lesson could be on any of those days. Lessons in bold type are in fixed slots and therefore do not rotate, though, again, on occasions we may have to swap them around to avoid clashes with events.
  • The music staff will always try to reschedule lessons missed because of a school event, however lessons missed because of illness or not having an instrument in school cannot be made up.
  • If you know your child is not going to be in school for their lesson for any reason, please do let me know as early as possible and I will try to work around it, though this cannot be guaranteed.
  • Lessons before school and during lunchtime are prioritised to Year 6 pupils in the Michaelmas term. After Christmas, Year 6 lessons will move to being during class time, and the out-of-class-time lessons will be allocated to Year 5 pupils.
  • Half a term's (ie 5 lessons) notice is required to stop having lessons, or payment of half a term's fees in lieu of notice.

Please send all enquiries about music lessons to me juliebarnes@crescentschool.co.uk rather than the individual music teachers.

Crescent Celebrates World Cultures

Friday 4 October was an off-timetable day dedicated to exploring and celebrating the diversity of our school. Children came to school in traditional dress reflecting their heritage, their favourite country’s football team, the colours of their national flag or just in non-uniform.

Pupils enjoyed a day of shared cultural experiences building their appreciation of the wider world. We welcomed parents, Mrs Shah and Mrs Gill, into school for an introduction to the cultures of India and Persia. Then, external providers ran drumming and ribbon workshop activities bringing to life African and Chinese cultures. Ms Quirke even provided an Irish sporting experience, introducing Year 4 to Gaelic Football. Of course, our wonderful catering team laid on a special world culture day school lunch.

Crescent has certainly had a colourful day where we have all had the opportunity to appreciate the wonderful diversity of our school.

We hope you enjoy these photos from the activities today.

ADHD Awareness Month

October is ADHD Awareness month and the theme this year is ‘Awareness is key!’

As in all areas of life, members of our Crescent community have ADHD, whether that be diagnosed or self-identifying with traits. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a brain-based disorder that affects about one in ten school-aged children and for half these, symptoms continue into adulthood.

Individuals with ADHD have higher levels of inattention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity than their peers. Executive functioning skills are also often affected. This can mean extra difficulties with planning, organisation, completing tasks, time management and appreciating the long term consequences of their actions.

People with ADHD are often very successful with particular strengths in creativity, hyperfocus, empathy, tenacity and resilience. There are many famous, successful people with ADHD – whose determination and energy has led to amazing achievements.

Harvest Festival Donations For Rugby Food Bank

It is that time of year again when we are thankful for all that we have and reflect on those who don't have enough. We have been supporting the important work of the Rugby Food Bank for a number of years and we continue to do so this year.

Pre-Prep Reading Certificates

A really important part of life in Pre-Prep is building a love of reading. We are developing the children's phonics skills, reading fluency, expression, style and comprehension. Each week we select two readers from each class (Reception after half term) who have stood out to us as demonstrating one or more of these skills or who have made really great progress over the previous few weeks. It's a lovely way for the children to know that we recognise and celebrate their success.

This week's reading superstars are:

  • Year 1 Clementine and Eve

Around The Classes

Reception Round Up

Phonics

The children have continued to consolidate and extend their repertoire of ‘black cat’ single-letter sounds. To date we have covered: s, a, t, p, I, n, m, d, g. We have also looked at some new high frequency words: am, and, dad. Next week, we will be looking at: to, into, go, no, the. As a class we have been working hard to develop our ‘blending to read’ skills and are beginning to look at ‘segmenting to spell’ whereby the children breakdown a word into its individual phonemes (letter sounds). The children look forward to their daily Monster Phonics sessions and they particularly enjoy the focus-letter animations and songs. It is lovely to hear the children singing along and joining in.

Handwriting and Maths

The class are working hard to develop their pencil control and fine motor strength with the use of modelling dough, cutting and sticking exercises, button practise when getting ready for their PE lessons and using the ‘build and make’ resources in the classroom. We have looked at the cursive formation of l, t, h and we will be moving on to the letters b and k next week.

In addition to developing the correct number formations, the children have been busy developing their awareness of numbers from 1-5 in terms of recognition, sequence and order, and understanding one more and one less.

We have some little rhymes to help us with our number formation work:

  • “A downward stroke, my that’s fun. Now I’ve made the number one.”
  • “Half a heart will never do, slide to the right, make a two.”
  • “Around the tree, around the tree, That’s the way to make a three.”
  • “Down and across and down once more, now I’ve made the number four.”
  • “Make a hat, make his back. Make five’s tummy round and fat.”

Literacy and Art

As a class we have enjoyed reading The Lion Inside by Rachel Bright which is story about confidence, bravery and a shy little mouse who sets out on a journey to find his roar! We drew parallels with being brave starting a new journey in Reception class, making new friends and trying new things. We learn from the story that “we all have a mouse and a lion inside” so the class created their very own mice and lions, whilst also noting the change of seasons with the use of some beautiful autumn leaves.

How to help your child at home

  • Continue to encourage your child to dress independently
  • Have fun playing eye-spy to strengthen identification of initial sounds of objects. You can extend this to objects which end with a particular letter sound eg. Bus (for ‘s’)
  • Play sound-speak games such as:
    • “Can you touch you f-ee-t?” (l-i-p, ch-i-n, l-e-g)
    • “What sound does a b-u-s make?” (c-ar, t-r-ai-n)
    • “What sound does a c-a-t make?” (h-e-n, sh-ee-p, c-ow)
  • Use the single-letter black cat sounds we have looked at so far to build different words: nap, sit, sat, tip, pat, pin, dig, tap, mat, map, sad, gap. Can they make a chain of words by changing one letter each time? Are they able to identify words that rhyme?

Notices

  • Please ensure your child has their black winter coat in school. The children really enjoy using the outdoor learning space and as far as is practical we will facilitate this providing the children have wellies and their waterproof coat available to wear.
  • We will be writing and talking about family members next week, so this is the last call for family photos to be sent in.
  • We still have a few children saying they no longer wish to receive milk at snack time. Please let the school office know if you would like to remove your child from the list.
  • On Friday 18 October, we will be learning about Diwali which falls on Friday 1 November this year. The children will enjoy a range of creative activities and there will be no individual reading that day.
  • If you happen to have any spare PVC table cloths that you no longer use, we would gratefully  receive any donations.

Making Mobile Phones Safer For Children

There is no escaping the importance of mobile ‘smart’ phones in today’s society… whether it be for messaging, video and regular calling, taking photos and videos, banking, gaming, or ordering yourself a pizza! It would probably also not surprise you to know that most children in the UK regularly have access to a smartphone, either a parents’ or siblings' device, or more commonly their own. A survey last year even found that a massive 53% of children aged 7 have their own mobile, jumping sharply to 90% by the age of 11.

Now as with most technology, these devices are not only a lot of fun, they can be extremely helpful, particularly in terms of maintaining near constant contact with your loved ones and being able to track their location at the touch of a button. They do however need to be carefully set up to ensure maximum protection for the younger user. This includes setting up content restrictions, web and search filters and carefully monitoring and limiting what apps can be downloaded

The website Internet Matters really is the most amazing and useful place on the internet to find advice about setting parental controls. Just click on the link then scroll down to select from a range of devices, broadband providers, search engines and apps, all of which guide you to set up your online world to be the safest place possible.

I also have attached two very handy guides, one for iPhones and the other for Android devices which are a great place to start, but if you have any further questions on how to make phones as safe they can possibly be, including using tracking apps like Life360, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

U11 And U10 Hockey V King Henry VII U11

All of our Year 5 and Year 6 Girls travelled to Rugby College for a short training session before their matches against King Henry VIII. We worked developing the strength of our pass, movement off the ball and set plays from hit out and long corners.

U11 team played a fantastic game, working really hard throughout, unfortunately they were caught off guard with an early goal from King Henry’s which then fired up the team to step up the attack.  Crescent held most of the possession in the match and moved the ball well, again just not managing to finish it off. Crescent had the opportunity to practice a short corner for the first time with Toni injecting the ball into the D for an attempt on goal. A gritty performance by all with fantastic goal keeping from Roisin preventing King Henry’s from scoring again. 1-0 Loss

  • POM – Roisin
  • Coaches player – Maya

The U10 girls all showed great teamwork and motivation in their game, working hard on and off the ball. We had some fantastic phases of movement linking passes well and covering the ground quickly. The girls had a number of chances, but just pushed the ball wide and had one disallowed goal as it was not touched in the D.  2-0 Loss.

Bag2School is a fundraising scheme which collects unwanted textiles and sells them to importers and textile manufacturers in many countries of Eastern and Western Europe. They have been collecting items for over 15 years and have so far paid out over £42 million to PTA groups while in turn supporting the circular economy. Find out how it works by visiting:

Bags2School

FoC - Macmillan Coffee Morning Update

Huge thanks to all at last Friday's Macmillan coffee morning - despite the torrential rain your donations and subsequent eating ?? raised a whopping £510 for such a great charity. And such a privilege to see the children’s happy sticky faces enjoying their cake treat at break time.
