Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Message

Dear Parents and Friends of the School

At the end of the second week back in school, we feel fully in the groove and ready to meet the challenges of this important longer first term in the academic calendar. All of the new children have settled into their classrooms and new environment, and those that have been here longer have reset from summer mode and are back into the routine of early nights, early rises and learning in the classrooms.

This week has seen our first house meetings of the year, along with play-leader training for Year 6 children, as well as the first batch of sports fixtures. Co-curricular clubs have also started this week, and it was pleasing in assembly this morning to reflect on the broad range of activities the children have enjoyed over the last five days. Next week, there are lots more sports fixtures as well as our first educational visit to the Space Centre on Friday, not to mention the first bake sale of the year to round off the week.

I hope that you are also finding the transition back to school a smooth one and managing all of those tricky logistics of uniform, homework, travel to work and school, and for very many of you putting in a week’s hard work at the same time.

This weekend of course is an important one for lots of children in Year 6, who will be taking their 11 plus grammar school exams. There will no doubt be some nerves on the day, but I am always filled with reassurance for our children as they come into this weekend, knowing the preparation they have had here will stand them in excellent stead. It is rare that question types arise they haven't encountered before, and when they do, they have been fully equipped with the attack skills to have a go and solve problems. We wish them the very best of Crescent luck.

This week was a significant one for me personally as I reached my 60th birthday. Many thanks to everyone for their well wishes, which were very much appreciated. We also said some tearful farewells to our youngest son Hugh, who began his time in Edinburgh at university. It is not an easy transition to make when you are 18 years old, so Mandy and I are keeping a very close eye on WhatsApp messages and hoping for phone calls. We've had one so far and although the doubts are still there, I think he's going to be absolutely fine. Our eldest son James returns to the Navy in a week or so's time, so it will be a much quieter household at No57, at least for a few months.

I hope you are able to enjoy a relaxing weekend with your children.

Pastoral Update

Dear Parents

We have been delighted to see a calm and happy atmosphere fill the school once again in these opening days of the new term. This has been highlighted by the growing bonds of mutual respect and fun between our new Reception children and their Year 6 buddies and with all of our new children starting at Crescent, alongside the resumption of previous friendships.

In my changed role, alongside always noting this, it remains crucial that we don't take it for granted and remain proactive in expecting the best of behaviour from all children.

As such, over upcoming weeks, I will be leading a review of these expectations and any necessary sanction: making them meaningful, clear, consistent and fair to all.

This will involve consultation with all staff, significant listening to pupil voice through form times and school council and parental input.

We will be in touch again before half term with a parental questionnaire about all aspects of school life, which will include an opportunity for parental behaviour feedback which will further support best outcomes for all children.

Best Wishes

Alan Webb

Good Luck Year 6

This weekend many of Class 6W are taking the 11+, we wish them all the very best for it.

They are fully prepared for the assessment and for the upcoming independent school examinations. During their time at Crescent they have taken part in mocks and focused lessons so children don't face the unknown on the day and instead feel fully prepared and supported.

Kindles Or Other E-Readers In School

Kindles or other e-readers are allowed in school from Year 3 for the children to read from. It is important that reading is as accessible as possible for children and often books are cheaper online. The children really only need to be reading one book rather than having a school book and a home book, one book can do both jobs and will save on confusion for the child.

If you decide that your child can bring their Kindle or other e-reader in, then it is to be used for reading ONLY. There will be no internet access. If a child is found using it inappropriately then parents will be informed. The Kindle will be the child's responsibility and any breakages are not our responsibility.

Please be reassured there are more than enough books in school for your child to enjoy and there is no necessity for your child to have a Kindle or e-reader, it is just a different way to access books if you wish to.

Harvest Festival Donations For Rugby Food Bank

It is that time of year again when we are thankful for all that we have and reflect on those who don't have enough. We have been supporting the important work of the Rugby Food Bank for a number of years and we continue to do so this year.

From Monday 23 September, we are asking for our families to bring any donations into school, via the normal student entrance where they will be met by our Year 6 helpers. We will collect and store our donations until Friday 11 October when we will be arranging for them to be collected by Rugby Food Bank.

Many thanks in advance for your continued support and generosity for this cause.

Music Lesson Timetable

Please see below to view next week's Music Lesson timetable:

Music lessons - 16 September 2024

The music lesson timetable will be published in the Courier every Friday. Please note the following:

  • The timetable changes every week. Lessons are rotated as we try to avoid children missing the same lesson each week, though sometimes this is unavoidable if there are trips, matches and events to work around. If a teacher teaches on more than one day, your child's lesson could be on any of those days. Lessons in bold type are in fixed slots and therefore do not rotate, though, again, on occasions we may have to swap them around to avoid clashes with events.
  • The music staff will always try to reschedule lessons missed because of a school event, however lessons missed because of illness cannot be made up.
  • If you know your child is not going to be in school for their lesson for any reason, please do let me know as early as possible and I will try to work around it, though this cannot be guaranteed.
  • Lessons before school and during lunchtime are prioritised to Year 6 pupils in the Michaelmas term. After Christmas, Year 6 lessons will move to being during class time, and the out-of-class-time lessons will be allocated to Year 5 pupils.
  • Half a term's (ie 5 lessons) notice is required to stop having lessons, or payment of half a term's fees in lieu of notice.

Please send all enquiries about music lessons to me juliebarnes@crescentschool.co.uk rather than the individual music teachers.

New Green Team Appointed

Crescent School has a Green Team who champion sustainability, and specifically how we can improve our biodiversity, waste and recycling, and water usage.

Last year the Green Team worked tirelessly championing sustainability issues across the school, their enthusiasm and motivation were inspiring to us all.

However, we have started a new school year, so in Assembly this morning we announced that the following children will be our new Green Team for 2024/25:

  • Nora and Mingyi in Year 6
  • Mithun and Ava in Year 5
  • Walter, Klara, Jahnavi and Alice in Year 4
  • Isabel, Thato, Keevie and Iris in Year 3

Mr Thackway Celebrated A Special Birthday

Our wonderful Headmaster, Mr Thackway, celebrated his 60th birthday this week and our pupils and staff weren't going to let him get away without a suitable celebration.

They surprised him first thing in the morning, in the playground, with a super rendition of Happy Birthday at the start of the school day. Mr Thackway was then presented with a rose for his garden, two beautiful pictures of birds for his office, and Dawn, our school Chef, made him a brilliant birthday cake.

Everyone here at Crescent School hopes he enjoyed celebrating his big birthday!

You can listen to a clip of the children singing here.

Year 6 Learn About Leadership

Year 6 enjoyed learning about the art of leadership on Tuesday as they prepared for their Play Leader roles this year.

They were asked to think about inspirational leaders and the qualities and key attributes strong leaders hold. They then thought about the characteristics they possess and those they may need to work on. They learnt about communication skills, both verbal and nonverbal, the importance of clear and concise instructions and how important it is to plan ahead and be prepared, and to always have a Plan B. The physical aspect of the course was next, learning to carry out a risk assessment of the playing area and how to warm up in a safe and fun way.

Pupils then had the opportunity to lead their peers through a variety of warm up games before planning and adapting their own games and activities to run. Year 6 were focused throughout their training session, and we are positive they are going to have a great time running their activities with Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 this year.

Year 6 Get To Know Their Reception Buddies

A valued and important tradition here at Crescent School is for the Year 6 children to buddy with a Reception child to support them through their first year at school. The Year 6s help Reception settle into school, assisting them at lunchtime, modelling good manners, encouraging them in their play and generally being friendly, helpful and welcoming.

Our Year 6s have enjoyed spending time with their new Reception buddies this week, beginning the process of building a strong bond. It’s a rite of passage for our Year 6 pupils, an opportunity for them to give back to their school community and we know they all enjoy playing their part.

Year 4 English

Year 4 have been delving deeper into the world of Horrid Henry this week, getting to know the main characters well enough to be able to describe them in detail. They've used a variety of interesting adjectives to bring them to life in English lessons and we even had some appearances of Horrid Henry himself in their homework projects!

Class 4W have settled into our new classroom very well and are getting used to Miss Bowdige’s new name!

We have begun looking at number and place value in Maths and enjoyed studying Horrid Henry to help us with our expanded noun phrases in English. In RE, we are exploring how people pray in different religions and have discussed people who love us and help us when we are in need.

We are already receiving house points for excellent work and a couple of Mastery JDVs have been awarded. Sid the squirrel provides us with entertainment on occasion just outside our windows and we are loving seeing the colours as autumn takes hold.

In 5F we often need to work together to get the job done in Maths as well as bounce ideas off each other. So we use the geometric 'Collaboration Carpet' area to do this. Collaboration can make the maths a little simpler or sometimes tackle a challenge and helps to make us good learners.

Co-curricular Clubs

We have had a great start to co-curricular this week. It’s been great see some new clubs around school like Darts, Bilinguasing, Creative Writing and Football.

In Bilinguasing children in Years 2, 3 and 4 have enjoyed singing songs and learning French, it was great to see the children improving both their French and their singing.

In Football, this year we have an outside provider providing this club, if your child enjoys this sport and are in Year 4, 5 or 6 they will have a great time outside improving their skills!

There are still a few spaces available in some clubs if you wish to sign your child up.

Mock Exam Helps Year 6 Prepare

Year 6 are working hard preparing for the upcoming entrance exam season. Many pupils are sitting a number of examinations over the next few weeks and months so to help them prepare, this week they have had the chance to sit a mock exam in the school hall. It was all part of our focused approach to help pupils understand what is expected of them and to help them feel fully supported.

We are extremely proud of how quickly the children have got straight back into their learning this term and we wish them all the very best with their upcoming exams.

Seesaw For Parents At Crescent - Keeping You In The Learning Loop!

Although we appreciate that for some of you who experienced the 'joys' of home learning, just hearing the word 'Seesaw' might still be slightly triggering... we absolutely love it here at Crescent and use it as one of our key learning platforms for a number of reasons.

Its primary strength lies in the ability for pupils to easily and speedily upload and share their work with others. Using the exact same tools pupils and parents were using to share the learning that went on in your homes, we can now use it to instantly share our fabulous learning with you wherever you are, making you feel like you're in the classroom with us!

This obviously has a number of key benefits for both parents and pupils, as it will provide a great insight into your child's learning, give you the chance to add your own positive comments and feedback to their work, and hopefully avoid that inevitable "can't remember..." response you get when you ask them what they did at school today! It also gives your children an enormous amount of pride in their work, knowing that what they produce can be digitally shared with their parents at work or home in seconds.

If Seesaw is completely new to you, then getting started couldn't be easier. You should hopefully have already received your unique Seesaw family login sheet via your child, although if you haven't just drop their form tutor a quick email and they will be able to email you back a digital copy.

Just download the Seesaw App on to any device, select 'family member' then scan the QR code on the sheet. This should then give you access to all of your child's Seesaw classes, enabling you to see and comment (we love positive comments from parents!) on any work your child has posted.

Girls Hockey v Bablake

Despite the near monsoon conditions on Tuesday afternoon, all of the pupils enjoyed a superb away fixture.

The girls matches were a bit further up the road at the Coventry Schools Astro pitches where all 23 Crescent girls taking part played fantastically, getting really stuck in showing fantastic determination, resilience and grit. Pupils were able to have a coaching session with Mrs Dowling as well as take part in a match against Bablake students in which all pupils developed their ball carrying skills, use of space and teamwork. Fantastic attitude and effort from all.

Rugby U9's A & B vs Bablake U9's A & B

Despite the near monsoon conditions on Tuesday afternoon, both of our U9 rugby sides enjoyed a superb away fixture at Bablake, playing with skill, pace, super handling despite the weather... and above all big smiles on their faces!

Although the matches were more about practice and experience rather than the actual result, remarkably both ended in a thoroughly deserved draw for both sides.

Players of the match were Charlie and Feranmi for the A's for their ferocious defence, and Ben for the B's for his terrific speed and running lines... although the entire squad deserves a huge well done playing their hearts out in true Cresent fashion, with real determination, and not moaning once about the biblical weather!

Friday 27 September 2024 - 8.15am to 9.30am

We will be supporting this important charity in typical Crescent cake style! Please bring donations of cakes into school on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 September, and then come along on Friday morning to buy and eat!

We'll be open from 8.15am at drop off with hot drinks and bacon sarnies available too - stop and chat or grab and go!  Great opportunity to meet other parents before the busy day ahead. The children will be buying their cakes at breaktime so please send in a donation (min £1) with them.

Pre-loved uniform:
We will be running a pre-loved stall alongside the Macmillan coffee morning, so come along to see if we have what you need next at a bargain price! For it to be a success we need lots of uniform to sell! This is a great way to recycle uniform that your children have grown out of and to find your next size up. Those summer growth spurts may have left you with some smaller items, please consider donating.

Please leave in the box outside the main door or drop into the school office during school hours.  Reminder of what we can and can’t accept:
