Crescent’s Great Platinum Jubilee Bake Off

Pupils at the Crescent School took part in a special DT Challenge this week when they channelled their inner Mary Berry and went all out to win the school’s Great Platinum Jubilee Bake Off. Their task was to design, bake and decorate a Victoria Sponge cake to mark HM Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee.

Pupils worked in teams and, after researching the history of the Victoria Sponge, began by carefully designing their cakes. Mrs Johnson then provided all the ingredients, and, on Wednesday, Year 6 got busy baking their sponges, being careful to beat well but fold the flour in gently, as one of the key judging criteria was a light and airy cake.

Friday morning was all about the decoration and the youngsters spent periods 1 and 2 excitedly creating their stunning designs, we had Union Jack flags made from whipped cream and summer fruit, royal crown creations, strawberry flowers, chocolate dipped strawberries, red, white and blue sprinkles and even an English tea-time favourites cake!

Judging all the cakes were Mr Adkins and Mrs Stephenson, who happily took on the hard work of tasting all those cakes. In addition to the texture and taste of the sponge they considered, the creativity of the design, how the fillings complimented the cake and how the team worked together to produce the finished entry.

After much deliberation the results were: in first place Charlotte and Chloe and in second place Stephanie, Katherine, Harriet and Rory. A really big well done to everyone though, as it was a very close decision.

Mrs Johnson, said, “Our bakers were just incredible, the effort and creativity put into making their cakes has been amazing. Well done everyone.”

And there is plenty more Platinum Jubilee fun to come, as the school is holding a themed Jubilee Day after half term on Friday 10 June to mark the Queen’s anniversary in our own special Crescent way!

Roles And Responsibilities For Year 6 2022/23

It is with great pleasure that I am writing to let you know about the timeline for roles and responsibilities for 5F as they enter 6W.

Any child who would wish to apply for Head Boy and Girl will need to write a letter to Mr Thackway by Monday 6 June 2022, explaining the qualities they have to bring to the role. These are to be handwritten and should be the children’s work. The children will be given a job description so they are aware of what the job entails.

We are intending that the Head Boy and Girl will be announced before 13 June.

If a child would like to be a House Captain (two for each House), they can apply for both roles but if chosen as Head Boy or Girl, they will no longer be considered for House Captain.

Each House is to have duties and responsibilities to perform. They will work as a team, co-ordinated by their House Captain, Mrs Webb and Mrs Nelson. Any child who would like to be considered as a House Captain will need to apply to their House Teacher with a brief letter to say why they are interested in the role by the 17 June (Mrs Pullen for St Andrew, Mrs Forth for St George, Mrs Johnson for St David). The children will be given a job description for this too. They can give a brief talk to their House on 20 June explaining why they will be a good captain. We are intending for the House Captains to be announced before 27 June.

There will be Team Captains appointed in each of the main sports rather than Sport Prefects. This will allow more children to have the opportunity to help lead their team alongside Mr Adkins and Mrs McCollin. These positions will be decided by the sports staff and announced during the year. There will also be Monitors for Library, Orchestra and Choir - these will be organised by Mrs Calder and Mrs Barnes

The table below shows the responsibilities each House will have through the year, changing team each term. The House Captains will play an important part in organising the rotas for these responsibilities.

Eco Team Duty Team Pupil Team
Recycling
Litter pick
Making sure class doors are shut if empty
Lost property
Helping tidy up at lunchtime on the playground and in the playzone
UV monitor
Door duty
Ringing the bell
Assembly team
Wet break duty
Homework collection
Writing the date on the board
Play leaders

Each House is to be trained to be play leaders. Mrs McCollin will work with each house for one day through the year, coaching them to develop the skills needed to be a good Play Leader. She will monitor their activity and reward them accordingly. These Teams will help organise and work with younger children in the playground.

Year 6 buddy with the Reception children, helping them to settle in, sitting with them at lunchtime on occasion and modelling the Crescent Promise.

We believe all of these roles will give the children more responsibility, increased maturity and develop a range of skills that will serve them well as they move on to their Senior School.

Year 5 Enjoy A Taste Of Life At Senior School

Year 5 pupils visited Princethorpe College on Thursday 19 May, to take part in a special Crescent School only taster day. It was an early opportunity for them to experience life at the Foundation’s senior school and start to become familiar with the bigger school environment, helping to make the move to secondary school a less daunting experience.

Pupils took part in lessons in Science, History, Business Studies, Maths and Textiles. They also had a walk around the school buildings and grounds, enjoyed a legendary Princethorpe cookie, spotted old Crescent friends now at Princethorpe, took lunch in the Refectory and participated in other activities including a Q&A with the prefects. At the end of the day they had the chance to familiarise themselves with the CEM tests used on entrance examinations day.

Their parents were invited to Princethorpe too, to meet members of the Senior Leadership Team.

Parents are reminded that Crescent School children are not automatically entered for Princethorpe’s Entrance Examinations. Those wishing to apply for September 2023 entry must complete a registration form by Friday 30 September at the latest, with the Entrance Examinations then taking place on Saturday 5 November.

More information is available from the Admissions Office at Princethorpe, they can be contacted on 01926 634201/262/297 or email admissions@princethorpe.co.uk.

Year 6 Start Their Celebrations With A Treat

Year 6 enjoyed a Celebration Breakfast on Wednesday and Chef Mr Moore and his team had laid on a super spread. The children have worked hard this year, handled their examinations so well and at all times been excellent role models for the pupils in the lower school.

Breakfast was laid out in the hall with cereals, pastries, fruit and fruit juice to choose from and Year 6 made short work of the tasty feast.

The children were also presented with their Leavers' Hoodies and they were quick to put them on. Now a tradition for most schools, the hoodies will always be a tangible memory of their time at Crescent and their fellow pupils. They all looked so smart. We took them straight outside for a photo. A huge thank you to the FoC for organising them!

Crescent Raises £1,110 For Rugby Based Charity Bwengu Projects Malawi

On Tuesday 17 May local Rugby resident Sam Melia, from Bwengu Projects Malawi, visited the Crescent School to receive a cheque for £1,110.00.  The cheque was presented by Year 4 pupils, Maggie and James, in assembly in front of the whole school.

The Crescent School has been supporting the work of Bwengu Projects for fifteen years now. In fact, the school was one of the charity’s first supporters back in 2007 when they donated books for use in school libraries. Each year the Year 4 children at the Crescent School study Africa and in particular Malawi and the work that Bwengu Projects does. Studying the challenges the people in Malawi face helps the children to appreciate the similarities and differences in our societies.

At the end of their topic the children organise fundraising activities that the whole school participates in. For the first time, in 2022, Bwengu Projects asked Crescent School to support a whole project, the completion of a Nursery and Orphan Feeding Centre in Mleghu in the most northern part of Malawi. The children set themselves a target of £685 which would enable the building to be completed.

The Year 4s raised money in a number of enterprising ways including, a sponsored silence, guessing games and a non-uniform day and together they managed to raise a whopping £1,110.

Bryony Forth, Deputy Head, commented,

“Supporting the Bwengu Project is always a highlight of my teaching year, something which I personally am very proud to be part of. The children enjoy studying Bwengu and comparing 'A Village Less Economically Developed than Rugby'.  Over the years, we must have raised over £12,000 and helped pay for renovating schools, building a Women's Development Centre, sewing machines, a teacher's salary and nearly 60,000 meals for orphans.

“The children worked incredibly hard this year organising lots of events. They have smashed their fundraising target, having raised a great total of £1,110.00. As well as completing the building, the money will also now provide for furniture and toys for the nursery and cooking pots, bowls and a supply of food."

Samantha Melia was overwhelmed, and commented,

“This is really wonderful. There are so many different people in need across the world and we are so grateful that every year pupils at the Crescent help unlock the opportunity of education for the children of Malawi.”
